Home SOFI Stadium on a Sunday. Right, that's correct, all right?
Speaker 2 (01:24):
And your chargers are in Brazil.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
Yes they yes they are. I'll be telling you more
about that in moments. Here's what's ahead on wake up Call.
The US government has sued so Cal Edison, claiming poorly
maintained power lines sparked the fire in Altadena in January
and the Fairview Fire east of Hemmet in Riverside County
in twenty twenty two. The two fires caused more than
(01:47):
seventy seven million dollars in damage to Forest Service land.
Almost two dozen people were killed in those fires. The
parents of seven month old Emmanuel Harrow have pleaded not
guilty to murder charges. Jake and Rebecca Harrow are accused
of abusing the baby, leading to his death. They're also
accused of claiming he was kidnapped and yukaipa last month
and filing a false police report. Emmanuel's remains have not
(02:10):
been found. I mentioned the Chargers well. The Chargers kickoff
their NFL season tonight on the south side of the Equator.
LA faces the AFC Division champion Kansas City Chiefs in
Sal Paulo, Brazil. Our own Shannon Farren's going to be
there on the sidelines. Pre games starts at four pm
and you can listen to the game right here ONFI.
(02:32):
Kickoff is at five. AHHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Junior
was on the hot seat on Capitol Hill. Did you
watch it? Man? The fireworks for Flying ABC Stephen Portner,
He's going to tell us about what went down in
just a couple of minutes. That's in like three minutes.
Women already know this. A good foundation is everything. Our
(02:54):
Dean Sharp is going to join us at five twenty.
We're talking foundations. I'm guessing it's probably a different kind
of foundation though. Also in wake Up Call this morning,
we know there are secret menu items in and out,
but do you know about all of them? We will
be revealing secrets this morning. Also, fans of the Office
are in for a treat on the stream And remember
(03:14):
how Netflix did that special theatrical release of the K
Pop Demons. Well, another streamer must think that they were
onto something because they're going to give it a shot too.
That's your hint.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
HM.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
Let's get started with some of the stories coming out
of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. The federal government
suing so Cal Edison over the Eaton fire in January
and the Fairview Fire near Hemmett in twenty twenty two.
The fires burned tens of thousands of acres of national
forest land, killing twenty one people. And destroying thousands of buildings.
Speaker 5 (03:50):
Well.
Speaker 6 (03:50):
Evidence has pointed toward transmission lines being linked to starting
the deadly Eaten fire in January. Investigators are still working
to determine a cause of the fire. The Department of
Justice says it is determined Southern California Edison is responsible.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
ABC's Alex Stone says the dj is suing Edison for
nearly eighty million dollars. Los Angeles County sued Edison in March.
A woman who allegedly faked being kidnapped by Ice to
get sympathy and donations is doing federal court in LA.
She's charged with conspiracy and making false statements to federal officers.
Prosecutors say Uriana Calderon's family even held a press conference
(04:27):
in June saying that she'd been picked up at a
Jack in the box in downtown LA. A lawyer said
when she refused to sign deportation papers, she was punished
by federal agents and sent to a warehouse in an
undisclosed location. Her daughter set up a GoFundMe saying her
mom was taken by masked men in an unmarked vehicle.
Mom was later found in Bakersfield, not in Ice custody.
(04:50):
The four of five is going to be even slower.
Speaker 7 (04:52):
This weekend, cal Twans will be closing three lanes each
in both the north and southbound directions between Wilshire and
Sunset Boulevards. It is part of a multi million dollar
payment rehabilitation project between Van Eyes and Westwood along the
Supulvada Pass. The Sopulvida and Sunset on and off ramp
will be closed, as well the Wilshire Boulevard on and
off ramps and the Santa Monica Boulevard on ramp. The
(05:15):
partial closure starts today at ten pm and last through
Monday at five am.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Mark Mayfield KO five News.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
Isn't that going to be fun? Let's say good morning
now to ABC's Stephen portnoy So. Stephen HHS Secretary Robert F.
Kennedy Junior on the hot seat before the Senate Finance Committee,
tell us about the fireworks.
Speaker 5 (05:35):
Well, look, I mean it was pretty predictable, right. You
had a number of Republicans who were supportive of Kennedy
or at least had his back, I suppose. But you
had Democrats who were asking him sharp questions. And what
was most interesting is you had a couple of Republicans
Bill Cassidy of Louisiana John Barasso Wyoming, both of them physicians,
(06:00):
very skeptical questions and airing their concerns. Bill Cassidy of
Louisiana said, quote, I would say, effectively, we're denying people vaccine.
John Barasso of Wyoming quote, I support vaccines. I'm a
doctor vaccine's work. The hearing featured RFK Junior defending last
week's firing of the CDC director after less than a
month on the job, saying the agency misled the public
(06:22):
through the pandemic. He said, quote, I need to fire
some of those people to make sure this doesn't happen again.
He said, We're the sickest country in the world. That's
why we had to fire people at the CDC. But
the fired director, Susan Manares, wrote in The Wall Street
Journal yesterday that she was fired after less than a
month on the job because she refused to pre approve
(06:44):
forthcoming recommendations on vaccines, said to be announced later this
month at a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization
Practices hand picked by RFK Junior. Now Kennedy insisted to
the yesterday to the Senate Finance Committee yesterday, he did
not tell Manares to preapprove the recommendations. And yet you
(07:04):
know that you have one side and you have another side.
But it was only a month ago that RFK Junior
said that he would support CDC director Manarez as a
brilliant choice, and a month later she's fired, and now
he's calling her a liar.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
M okay, so, and things did get very very heated.
I mean I was watching part of it and like,
do you think that Kennedy was able to make any points?
Or was the just the noise so loud in the room.
You know, it's interesting watching those hearings because a lot
of times the senators are just going off and they
(07:41):
don't really want answers. They're just using it as a
as a you know, a place to vent their frustrations
or or make comments or you know, further their platform.
Do you think that that Kennedy made any points or
was it just that yesterday?
Speaker 5 (07:58):
I think you're right to say that these hearings often
are opportunities for senators elected by their constituents back home
to make it seem as though they're really holding the
administration officials to account. But it is a visible element
of accountability, a check and a balance, and a unique
feature of the American system of government where these people
(08:20):
who are confirmed to these positions have to appear, have
to take it. And that's meant to demonstrate that we
in this country have a give and take. And so
while it's not the most enlightening opportunities per se instructive
in that respect, we're not actually learning in the exchanges,
except we get a sense of the point that Democrats
(08:42):
and some Republicans are trying to make.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
Yeah, all right, Steven Portinoya have many more questions about this,
but I know that you've got to run, so we
will save that for another day. But thank you so
much for the update. Appreciate it, you Bett. All right,
let's get back to some of the stories coming out
of the KFI twenty fours newsroom. A former Alaska Airlines
pilot who allegedly tried to shut off a plane's engine
(09:07):
in the middle of a flight is expected to change
his pleas Joseph Emerson is facing state and federal charges.
His lawyer says they've reached a plea agreement with prosecutors.
Emerson's accused of trying to shut down the engines on
a Horizon Airline flight back in twenty twenty three. Do
you remember this one? While he was sitting in the
cockpit junk seat, he wasn't actually flying the plane. He
(09:28):
was on you taking a ride. The crew held him down.
The flight from Everett, Washington to San Francisco was diverted
to Portland. Emerson told police he had used psychedelic mushrooms
before the flight and was having a nervous breakdown. Illinois
Governor J. B. Pritzker says he will take legal action
at President Trump send's the National Guard into Chicago. Pritzker
(09:50):
says he expects federal immigration agents to assemble in the
Chicago area by today and actions could begin as soon
as tomorrow. He called on anyone planning to protest to
do so peacefully. A federal appeals court panel has put
on hold indefinitely a lower court judges order to end
operations at the so called Alligator Alcatraz. It's the immigrant
(10:12):
detention center in the Florida Everglades. The three judge panel
in Atlanta decided yesterday by a two to one vote
to stay the federal judge's order pending the outcome of
an appeal. Saying it's in the public interest. The Trump
administration has fired another immigration judge in San Francisco.
Speaker 8 (10:28):
Judge Shira Levine was dismissed on Wednesday, marking the sixth
removal since January. Levine was appointed by the Biden administration
in twenty twenty one. Sonica Mahadgen, with a nonprofit Mission Action,
recently said she believes the Trump administration has an agenda.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
To dismiss judges that I have a high approval.
Speaker 8 (10:46):
Rate with a backlog in immigration cases already. The Trump
administration is now easing the hiring process for new temporary judges.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Dinacodiak kf I News.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
President Trump has hosted nearly two dozen tech CEOs for
day at the White House to showcase AI research and investments.
The guest list last night included Microsoft co founder Bill Gates,
Apple CEO Tim Cook, and Met CEO Mark Zuckerberg, among others.
Elon Musk says he was also invited but couldn't make it.
He and President Trump had a public falling out earlier
(11:19):
this year. A new study of the psychedelic drug LSD
has shown positive results for easing symptoms and people who
have anxiety.
Speaker 9 (11:27):
The results paved the way for additional testing and possible
approval of the mind altering chemical for medical use. Drug
maker mind Meed says it is conducting follow up research
and hopes of applying for Food and Drug Administration approval.
The company's work is part of a resurgence of interest
in the medical potential of psychedelics. US Secretary of Health
and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Junior, and other
(11:51):
Trump officials have suggested accelerating review of the drugs for veterans.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Deborah Mark Kfi news.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
Hip hop star wars Or has joined the ownership group
of the Long Beach Baseball Club. The independent team plans
to start playing in the Pioneer League in twenty twenty six.
The team will share Blair Field with cal State Long
Beach's baseball team. Warren G. Says it's his way to
give back to the city that raised him. The team
is currently holding a contest to name the team. So
(12:22):
I think this is kind of cool. You have a
great idea. I love you know, and I think that
we need to get creative because there's so many team
names that are kind of off limits these days. But
the Long Beach Baseball Club is encouraging fans to help
shape the club's identity by submitting name ideas. It goes
through September twelfth. Let's today the fifth, so through next Friday.
(12:43):
They want a name that reflects the people and culture
of Long Beach. The president of LBBC, Ina Patel, said,
this city has such a rich history in sports, arts,
music and culture, and we want the team to reflect that.
Going to start playing next year, it's an independent baseball league.
I love this. I love baseball, and you know what,
(13:06):
I love going to my Dodger games. Don't get me wrong,
go next week. You're here, going next week. I'm going
the week after that. But there's something about the smaller
stadiums that is just so cool. It's, you know, you're closer.
It's more intimate. I don't know if you can say
intimate about baseball, but it's, you know, it's just it's
a lot of fun. So I think this is cool.
If you have an idea for a team name, can't
(13:26):
be any team names that are already in use, but
it's at Long Beach Baseball Club dot com and you'll
find the information there if you want to be responsible
for the tame. No name I don't think they're going
to name it the Warrens. Do you the Long Beach
gs for Warren g Oh, I get it, No, I
doubt it. Rick Caruso may give it another go. The
(13:49):
billionaire businessman says he's considering running for mayor of la again.
He lost to Mayor Bass in twenty twenty two. He
also says he might make a run for governor. Caruso
says he'll decide soon which office to run for. A
Republican who is running for governor of California has filed
a federal lawsuit against the state's Proposition fifty. Steve Hilton
says the prop that would allow for voting districts to
(14:11):
be redrawn in favor of the Democrats violates several laws,
including voter equal protection. Prop fifty is Governor Newsom's response
to Texas redrawing voting maps to gain up to five
Republican seats in the US House. The iconic lax sign
at the entrance to the Los Angeles International Airport is
coming down. Cruz started removing the giant letters last night.
(14:35):
It'll allow them to work on roadway improvements, pedestrian upgrades,
improve signage, and better access. The letters are going to
be stored nearby until they can be relocated and incorporated
into the new road design at six oh five T
handle on the news, uber's kind of going old school.
It's going to start accepting cash again. Let's say good
(14:55):
morning now to the host of Home on KFI our house,
Whispered d and Sharp Dean. We're talking foundations, and I
don't think it's the same kind that women say are
very important.
Speaker 10 (15:07):
That's the that's the foundation I do not understand at all.
I don't. I mean, I have no experience with it whatsoever.
So you're you're gonna have You're gonna have.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
To take that visual though. Okay, so yeah, let's let's
talk about foundations for your home.
Speaker 10 (15:27):
Yeah, we're talking this weekend. I actually on Sunday show.
I've got a couple of very very special guests. I
actually have my foundation guy, my foundation repair guys with
me on the show this weekend. Because this is such
a scary thing for so many people. You know, it's
one thing when you kind of are familiar with something
that's going on with your house, like you know, I
(15:48):
would trust most homeowners to you know, figure out what
they need to do in regards to a painter, because
you know, people understand paint kind of ish, sort of enough.
But this is something when your foundation starts to fail,
when you see a crack in your foundation, or when
a floor starts going out a level, or a retaining
(16:10):
wall is starting to lean. Man, this is just outside
of most people's wheelhouse altogether. And so we're going to
take all three hours of the show on Sunday talk
about it, talk about what is and what isn't a
crack to be worried about, and hopefully gives people some
peace of mind and some direction when it comes to
a failing foundation for their home.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
Okay, so I have a question for you. You were saying,
you know, like, how do you know whether the foundation's
failing and that kind of stuff. Are there warning signs,
like if you get a crack in your drywall, is
that maybe a sign that the foundation is shifted to
a point where it's going to really need some repairs.
Speaker 10 (16:48):
Yeah, no, probably not. And that's that's the tricky thing.
You know, house to shift all the time, all on
their own, and you know, from time to time it's
not unusual at all for a crack in the drywall
to appear. The real question about cracks, let's just talk
about cracks in the slab. I mean, forget about the drywall.
Let's just go right to the concrete itself. The real
(17:10):
question is what is the nature of the crack. Is
it just what we would call in the industry kind
of a spider crack, which is a very thin crack,
hasn't spread open, one side is level with the other side.
Those are the kind of cracks that we actually expect
to happen in concrete over time. You know, we have
this saying in the industry that there's only two kinds
(17:32):
of concrete in the world, concrete that has cracked and
concrete that has not cracked yet because it's inevitable. It's
just a brittle material. But the question is what's the
nature of the crack. Now, if we've got a crack
in the foundation where we are starting to see daylight,
and I mean in the sense that it's really starting
to open up, or one side of that concrete is
(17:55):
starting to change, elevation from the other side, or the
level of a loor in a room is starting to change.
You start to walk into a room and you feel
like you're going downhill. A little bit that kind of thing.
These are the things to be concerned about.
Speaker 1 (18:09):
Okay, yeah, I'm thinking of all these, like because I
used to have a one hundred year old house and
I remember seeing like down in the basement. I was like,
is that a really bad thing? Is that fixable? Or
am I going to have to redo the whole foundation?
You know, you just start thinking about and can you
are there quick fixes for it? Or do you really
(18:30):
have to replace a foundation because I've seen people have
had to do that too.
Speaker 10 (18:34):
No, I mean, there are definitely failures of foundations that
require a foundation replacement, and that is something that I
would not wish on my worst enemy because it's a
whole thing. But the good news is most of the
time there are fixes, especially if you get somebody involved
soon enough who really knows what they're doing, a foundation expert.
So yeah, there are fixes, and there are stop gaps
(18:56):
along the way if you catch it early. So it's
very very much like you know, a problem with a bone,
a broken bone in the body, and it's like if
you address it soon, then the chances of it healing
getting back into place without minute, you know, without a
huge amount of fuss, are pretty good, and so it's
just something to keep an eye out and not to
(19:16):
ignore once you start to see one of these problematic
signs show up, and we'll talk about what those are
on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (19:23):
Okay, and that is Sunday from nine to noon right
here on Home with Dean Sharp on KFI. And of
course he's also on on Saturdays from six to eight am.
And it's going to be a very foundational program. I'm sure, yeah,
I know. Thank you, Dean Sharp. You can also follow
Dean at Home with Dean. We'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 10 (19:43):
Thanks Amy, all right.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
California schools are bracing for challenges after a Supreme Court
ruling gave parents the right to pull their kids from
LGBTQ plus lessons that conflict with their religious beliefs.
Speaker 3 (19:55):
Supporters call it a win for parental rights, but critics
say it unfairly targets elge students.
Speaker 6 (20:01):
You also have people on the other side of the
ledger who lead this as inherently discriminatory.
Speaker 3 (20:08):
Troy Flint from the California School Board Association says California
districts are currently working on implementation in a way that
complies with the law and reflects their community.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
Kfi's Heather Brooker says California law requires schools to teach
about the contributions of LGBTQ plus Americans using age appropriate
lessons on the diversity of humankind. A woman has been
killed in Lancaster when the car she was working under
fell off a jack and crushed her. It happened outside
a home yesterday afternoon. The woman died at the hospital.
(20:41):
Employees at a Subway sandwich shop and Eagle Rocks say
they're tired of dealing with rats. They held a rally
yesterday outside the store on Eagle Rock Boulevard to demand
safe working conditions.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
Professional people to clean the store.
Speaker 6 (20:54):
Also that they get very retractive because they are losing wedges.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
The store has been shut down by the Health Department.
The work say the infestation has lasted for over a year.
Photos show bites taken out of bread, avocados, and other items,
and there are also pictures of rats in traps. The
workers say they're tired of cleaning up the dead rodents
and droppings. Man, if you don't get a handle on rats,
(21:17):
my friend had one up in deck like the La Crecenta,
flint Ridge area. She had rats in her house, and
it was crazy, like they could not get rid of
them uns. They kind of took hold. They finally did,
but it took a really long time. Oh. New photos
appear to show the moment the deadly fire started in
Eaton Canyon on January seventh. A ball of fire can
(21:38):
be seen underneath the electrical transmission tower in the hills
above Pasadena next to Altadena. The transmission towers owned by
Southern California Edison, which is now being sued by the
US Department of Justice. Hundreds of inmate firefighters have been
deployed to help out with the wildfires burning in the state.
The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says six hundred and
(21:58):
forty inmates will be held bing CalFire. About eight hundred
incarcerated firefighters worked the frontlines of the wildfires in Alta, Dina,
and Pacific Palisades in January. About two thousand inmates live
year round in minimum security fire camps in twenty five
counties around California. I didn't know that. That's kind of cool.
(22:19):
With a beautiful late summer weekend on the way, swimmers
are being worn to stay out of the water at
several beaches in Socow because of high bacteria levels. Warning
signs are up at the affected beaches in Redondo Beach, Malibu,
Palace Verdes Estates, Marina del Rey, San Pedro, Santa Monica,
and Paradise Cove. At six oh five's handle on the news,
the front runner for mayor of New York City says
(22:40):
there are backroom deals to try to defeat him. The
Dodgers has taken on the Orioles in Baltimore this afternoon.
First pitch goes out at four. You can listen to
all the Dodger games all season long on AM five
to seventy LA Sports Live from the Galpin Motors Broadcast booth,
and stream all Dodgers games in HD on the iHeartRadio app. Keyword,
I have seventy LA Sports. Okay, who doesn't love a
(23:03):
good in and out? And I love in and out too?
Because it's simple. The menu is simple. There's only a
few things on it. And if there's there's secret menu items,
which most of us know animal animal style, and what
is animal style, It's got like tomatoes and extra stuff
on it. Yeah okay, yeah, so here are there are
(23:23):
other secret items though? And because there's what's the one
that doesn't have a bun?
Speaker 4 (23:29):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (23:29):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
Well, we'll get to it. Okay. So here here are
some of the ones that you might not know. They're
not on the menu, but you can order them and
they'll give them to you. And and you know, you
know some of these right, three by threes. You know
what a three by three is? I think it's got
three patties and three buns, three slices of cheese. Yeah.
(23:53):
And then there's the four by four. Come on a
fatty burger? Right, okay? I love this. There's a grilled
cheese that you can get.
Speaker 4 (24:02):
Yep.
Speaker 5 (24:03):
My daughter does that.
Speaker 1 (24:04):
So she just gets the hamburger without the burger basically exactly.
Speaker 2 (24:07):
It's like it's like a grilled cheese. Yeah okay, but
she does grilled onions on it.
Speaker 1 (24:11):
Okay. There's the veggie or wish burger. You know what
that one is?
Speaker 2 (24:19):
You wish you had actual meat, yeah, because.
Speaker 1 (24:21):
There's no meat and cheese on it, So I guess it.
What is it? Just pickles and tomatoes and lettuce?
Speaker 2 (24:26):
Is there a price difference in these?
Speaker 1 (24:28):
I don't know. I don't have prices on my little.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
Because she cheese seems like for just a bun and
a slice of like.
Speaker 1 (24:37):
Cheaper all right, let's see cheesy Cheesy wiki. So it's
basically like a cheeseburger, but it well without the burger. Again,
it's just three slices of cheese and it has four
slices of tomato on a double toasted bun. So it's
sort of like a belt without the bee. It's just
(24:59):
an LT. What about a Scooby snack?
Speaker 11 (25:04):
I call it something different though, What do you call it?
A puppy patty? Oh, a puppy patty, and that's just
the patty. It's just a patty without all the salt.
And I don't go to in and out without getting
two puppy patties for yourself or for your dogs, for
my dogs.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
Okay? What about the flying Dutchman? No two slices of
cheese between two meat patties? Okay. And then there's also
you can get different fries, like you can get them
extra light, which I don't know why you would do that,
because their fries are good if you eat them right
out of the like right away, but you got to
eat them fast because once they're cold not so much.
(25:40):
So extra light is lightly fried well done. You can
get them crispy, you can get them extra well done.
You can get cheese fries, and then animal fries. They're
fries with melted American cheese spread and chopped grilled onions.
I might have to try those. And then there's also
drinks too. There's a something called the lemon up.
Speaker 2 (26:02):
Yep, my son does up.
Speaker 1 (26:03):
It's a lemonade, a pink lemonade with seven up. There's
the Black and White Shake, chocolate and vanilla shake. There's
a root beer float. What root beer with vanilla shake?
There's a root beer float? I guess. So see, even
you learned something. I was surprised when Anna and I
were talking about it yesterday and she's like, oh, I
know that, I know that. Okay, what about a monkey style?
(26:28):
I love the name.
Speaker 2 (26:30):
Any idea bananas.
Speaker 1 (26:33):
A banana burger? No, No, that's not it. Monkey style
is fries inside the burger. Yeah. And what about roadkill fries.
That's a burger patty on top of animal fries.
Speaker 2 (26:48):
I like it.
Speaker 1 (26:48):
I love it. I'm gonna have to try.
Speaker 2 (26:50):
The curious what the prices are though.
Speaker 1 (26:54):
Well, I guess we're gonna have to go and do
a little research and we'll get back to you on that.
Speaker 2 (27:00):
Well, rupeerflow.
Speaker 1 (27:01):
I know, I think, I know, I think maybe I
am going to In and Out after work today. Right,
all right, time to get in your business. Now it's
Bloomberg's Courtney Donaho. Who I bet after listening to us
talk about that is a little bit hungry starving. Do
you have any especially here? No?
Speaker 12 (27:18):
No, Every time I go to Los Angeles, I always
go I go to In and Out. That's one of
my first stops because we don't have it here at all.
Speaker 1 (27:25):
So it's a special such a bummer, it is a treat. Yeah, okay,
well so then here's the question. Was it a treat
to see what's in the job report or was it not?
Not at all?
Speaker 12 (27:36):
And it has been a pretty exciting morning when it
comes to the jobs report. Now this is the highlight
of the week or the month for Wall Street. But
this report showing a notable slowdown in job growth, employers
adding just twenty two thousand jobs last month. Economists were
expecting a lot more seventy five thousand, the unemployment rate
taking up to four point three percent. That is the
highest level since late twenty twenty one. But right ahead
(28:00):
of this, there were some questions about getting the data
with about a half hour to go to the report.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics said that they were having
technical difficulties and its data retrieval tools weren't currently available
on the agency's website. But the main report came out
on times. Some sub reports took a little more time.
But looking overall, this is the fourth straight month of
(28:20):
sub one hundred thousand job growth.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
Job gains in.
Speaker 12 (28:23):
Healthcare that was offset by job cuts in the federal
government and oil and gas extraction.
Speaker 1 (28:28):
We're looking at oil prices.
Speaker 12 (28:29):
They've been lower a lot lately, so we're hearing about
a lot of oil companies cutting back on jobs. Taking
a look at the markets, stocks are moving a bit higher.
Speaker 1 (28:39):
SMP futures or.
Speaker 12 (28:39):
Up ten points. They were little changed before. But this
report is setting up the Federal Reserve to cut interest
rates later this month.
Speaker 1 (28:46):
So that even though it's bad news, it could be
good news.
Speaker 12 (28:50):
Yes, and that's why Wall Street is reacting positively. It's
very funny that a lot of times when we do
get economic reports that when we do see bad news
usually pop higher because they say, hey, Federal Reserve, you're
going to step in and you're going to help us.
So that's why we're seeing the moves that we are today.
Speaker 1 (29:07):
See, I think it's just because it's a topsy turvy world.
It always is a topsy turvy I know, right the
Wall story, you mentioned crude oil and I just looked
at the prices. The barrel of barrels are down to
like under sixty three dollars.
Speaker 4 (29:20):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 1 (29:21):
It's crazy. They've fallen about ten percent so far this year.
Speaker 12 (29:25):
And just this week, Conical Phillips said that it was
cutting about a quarter of its workforce.
Speaker 1 (29:30):
So there are.
Speaker 12 (29:31):
More and more companies coming out and saying we're going
to cut back on our workers. We're going to try
to cut back on our money because we have to
figure out what we're going to do, and especially with
production the way that it is and oil prices getting
a lot lower. This weekend is a key OPEC meeting,
so people are going to watch what's going to happen there,
and we could see big moves in the oil market
(29:52):
over the weekend.
Speaker 1 (29:53):
Okay, Gap, I used to love the Gap and I
have not shopped there for a year. I think it's
a it's a younger market than I am. That's getting
a makeover and an expansion.
Speaker 12 (30:03):
Yeah, they're adding a little gloss to their business. They're
going to roll out more beauty products and accessories at
its stores. So they're going to start the pilot at
Old Navy this fall. There's going to be a number
of locations, about one hundred and fifty, they're saying, with.
Speaker 1 (30:14):
Personal care products.
Speaker 12 (30:16):
Next year the company's going to expand the business to
more stores if it goes well, and launch other beauty products.
Speaker 1 (30:21):
But this is a huge business.
Speaker 12 (30:23):
I know by looking at my twin who wants to
go to spour all the time. The beauty and personal
care market is expected to top one hundred billion dollars
this year, So they say we.
Speaker 1 (30:33):
Want a piece of that. Interesting. So to me, like
just hearing that, it makes like it makes sense to
my brain that they would do that at Old Navy.
It doesn't make sense to my brain that they would
do it at the Gap. Yeah.
Speaker 12 (30:43):
Well, you know, they're all under the same umbrellas, so
and a lot of times they use the same playbook.
They also have Athletic Too and Banana Republic. So once
we see something happen at an Old Navy, you usually
see it filtering through to the other three retailers that
they have under their umbrella.
Speaker 1 (31:00):
And then one last thing. Food companies are taking note
because more people are cooking at home. Yeah, the hottest
reservation seems to be in our kitchens.
Speaker 12 (31:08):
Folks are looking for more affordable things to eat and
they're finding it in their own fridge. Spice maker McCormick
says around eighty six percent of meals are made at home.
Cooking from scratches definitely become more popular as we struggle
from inflation. Let's give you these numbers. Prices at the
grocery store have risen two point two percent in the
last year. Okay, that is a lot, but restaurants are
(31:29):
up four percent. So a couple of the food makers
general meals for example, they say they've seen a boost
in sales and rice and beans, and Campbell says, we're
reaching more for their soups just to eat and also
to prepare in our meals too.
Speaker 1 (31:42):
All right, getting in your business like we do every day.
It's Bloomberg's Courtney Donaho, Thank you, Courtney. We'll talk to
you mom, see you later. Three lanes in each direction
of the four h five through the some COVID pass.
You're going to be closed this weekend. The closure starts
at ten tonight runs through five am Monday. The Trump
Administration's fired another immigration in San Francisco. Judge Shira Levine
(32:02):
became the sixth judge to be removed since January when
she was dismissed on Wednesday. She was appointed by the
Biden administration in twenty twenty one. A judge has blacked
blocked plans to demolish Marilyn Monroe's old home in Brentwood.
The home is now protected as an historic landmark, but
the current owners contested that they were planning to tear
(32:24):
down the home where Monroe lived before she died so
they could expand their home next door. We are just
minutes away from Handle. On the news this morning, the
Department of Defense. It's getting a new name.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
Let's say good.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
Morning to ABC's Will Gans morning.
Speaker 4 (32:41):
Will Hey, Good morning, Happy Friday.
Speaker 1 (32:44):
Happy Friday.
Speaker 2 (32:45):
Hey this just in.
Speaker 1 (32:47):
Are you ready?
Speaker 4 (32:49):
UHO?
Speaker 1 (32:59):
Foreigner put out a message to Taylor and Travis and said,
we've known what love is for forty years. We're so
happy you found it, and they offered to play at
their wedding.
Speaker 4 (33:13):
I mean talk about an offer you can't refuse. If
foreigners wanting to play my wedding, if I'm Taylor and Travis,
why wouldn't you say yes?
Speaker 1 (33:22):
I know right, and then think about it. It's actually
brilliant because they just tapped into Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey.
I would love to see Spotify numbers after this week.
Speaker 4 (33:33):
So smart, it's so smart, genius.
Speaker 1 (33:37):
Genius, I tell you. Okay, let's get back to show business,
which I guess that is show business. But so fans
of the Office might be in for a real treat
on a new series.
Speaker 4 (33:48):
It's debuting exactly so this is a spin off. It's
made by the same guys that made The Office back
in the day on NBC. This is called The Paper
and it follows a failing print newspaper company in Toledo
as they try to stay alive, you know, in the
age of digital media. And it's shot the same way,
(34:09):
mockumentary style. And there is one crossover character, Oscar is
back from dunder Mifflin, but now he's the accountant here
for this newspaper company. And I mean, if you liked
The Office, you will love this similar style, similar high jinks,
ridiculous characters, but you know the same thing that made
The Office so successful, which is like that they are
(34:31):
good people just trying their best, you know. So it
is all. There are ten episodes. They are all streaming
as of yesterday on Peacock, So if you wanted to
binge the whole thing this weekend, you could and it's
already been picked up for a season two. So you know,
that's sort of a telltale sign that you know, hopefully
this thing has legs and you know people will like it.
(34:51):
When did it drop yesterday?
Speaker 1 (34:54):
Dropped yesterday? So did they say yes, we're doing a
season two just because they were like this one's going
to be huge, or because like the initial numbers were
like huge.
Speaker 4 (35:04):
Uh, you know, they don't really say why there's going
to be a season two, but I think sometimes when
it's when they are very confident in you know, the
team that they have working on it, the writers and
the ideas. I'm sure that they're being pitched, like here's
where this would go in season two. You know, it
seems like a safe bet. Also, you know, there are
(35:26):
some familiar faces in this show, but it's not you know,
you're not paying a twenty million dollar Meryl Streep salary,
so it's probably relatively affordable to bank on a season
two So yeah, a little bit of everything probably okay.
Speaker 1 (35:41):
Then moving over to movie theaters, we talked about K
Pop Demon Hunters going into theaters for the weekend and
it was it was a big weekend for sing longs
and somebody at another streaming service must have said, hey,
they're onto something, let's do it.
Speaker 4 (35:54):
Too, exactly, So that is why Hamilton is coming to
movie theaters this weekend.
Speaker 5 (36:02):
It is full.
Speaker 4 (36:04):
Hamilton, all two and a half hours of it. There
is a ten minute intermission, so if you need to
refill your soda or get more popcorn, or you know,
go out into the lobby and do your scale so
you're vocally warm for season for act two, you could
do that. And it comes with an introduction from some
of the original cast members, so there's never before seen
content for any Hamilton fans out there. Yeah, and it's
(36:29):
in honor of the show's tenth anniversary. So crazy to
think that that's been on Broadway for ten years and
it's coming to the movies for the very first time.
Speaker 1 (36:37):
And is it the one that is streaming now, the
same one but you said there's some other footage, but
is it the one that you can now see streaming exactly? Yeah,
is a sing along too.
Speaker 4 (36:49):
It's not official, it's not officially labeled to sing along,
like the words will not be popping up on the screen.
But you know, I have a feeling that that might
happen regardless.
Speaker 1 (36:58):
Oh my god, my friend Debbie, she just sings it
all the time. So maybe should we go to the
movies this weekend?
Speaker 5 (37:06):
She should?
Speaker 4 (37:07):
And Debbie, you can come with me. I'll sing along
with you.
Speaker 1 (37:09):
Oh I love it? Okay, And then one more note,
only murders in the Building alert alert.
Speaker 4 (37:16):
Comes back this week, Yes, Tuesday, the first three episodes
of season five will drop, and the guest stars this
season are just as amazing as they have been in
the past.
Speaker 10 (37:27):
This season we've.
Speaker 4 (37:27):
Got Nathan Lane, Logan Lerman, Keegan, Michael Key to name
a few, and Renee Zelweger. So it's it's you know,
it's it picks up right. We're season four left off,
which you know slight spoiler alert. I guess if you
didn't watch last season. But the doorman, poor guy wound
(37:47):
up dead in the fountain of the building. So they'll
be solving his murder this time. Meryl Streep's back as well,
and then of course I'll get familiar Fai, Selena Gomez,
Martin Short, and Steve Martin. So first three episodes this Tuesday,
and then a new episode every week after that.
Speaker 1 (38:01):
I love it. I was a late joiner to that.
I had never watched it until after this last season.
Took a while, but I was like, why did I
miss this show. It's just such a fun, charming show.
Speaker 4 (38:13):
That's exactly it. And they are all like Steve Martin
is perfect in his physical comedy, his acting, Martin Short,
I mean, they're all just you know, doing what they
do best. I just have so much fun watching it.
Speaker 1 (38:26):
I agree ABC's multi platform reporter Will Gains. Thanks so much.
Will have a great weekend.
Speaker 4 (38:33):
You too, Amy, take care all right, And just like.
