Speaker 6 (00:37):
This is your wake up call. Good morning. I'm Amy King.

She and I will be fighting a little bit later.
Speaker 6 (00:55):
One of you went.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
One of you is going to be unhappy on Monday.
Speaker 6 (00:58):
I know, right, oh y ex planing all weekend.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Well, and the Dodgers are having a little tough go
of it, so we'll see what happens.
Speaker 6 (01:07):
But it doesn't matter. I still love them. I'm seeing
the Rams and the Chargers tomorrow. I'm very excited about.
Oh nice, you're going to Sofi Stadium. Huh little preseason football?
Speaker 5 (01:15):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:16):
I like that. I love that.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Yes you will. And that's her side. Hustles works at
Sofi Stadium. Came in today and the place is all decorated.
I'm like, oh, whose birthday was it? And then I remembered.
Actually I looked at the sign and it said thank
you heroes, and I went, oh, yeah, that's right, So
Fush's heroes. You've heard of Hogan's heroes. Maybe these are
Fush's heroes.
Speaker 6 (01:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
So the guys who pulled our technical director Stefan out
of his burning car saved his life quite literally. He
was in with They were in with Tim Conway Junior.
And I believe Bush's parents were here yesterday.
Speaker 6 (01:51):
Too cool. You missed it, I obviously did.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
I need to listen to it on the iHeartRadio app,
but you can listen anytime. What I'm sure can you
image being a parent and seeing the people who saved
your son's life, Oh my gosh, yeah, I bet that
she at least mom, probably dad too. I would imagine
it was a pretty emotional time, but in a really
good way. Bush is continuing to recover. We got hurricanes
(02:16):
in the Atlantic, we got flooding in Tennessee, we got
fires in southern California. And I got a text from
my friend yesterday and she said, how do I get
a hurricane named after me? I've been as disaster my
whole life. I think I meet the requirements. Oh, Debbie,
Come on, here's what's ahead on Wake up called. Firefighters
(02:36):
get in the upper hand on a couple of fires
burning in the LA area. The fire along the five
Freeway near Gorman that started early, That started early.
Speaker 6 (02:44):
When did it start? Yesterday morning?
Speaker 4 (02:47):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (02:47):
Yes, yes, early west yesterday. Sorry, I'm getting my days
all mixed up. Has grown to almost six hundred acres.
The good news is it's forty percent surrounded and firefighters
have stopped the forward progress of that fast moving fire
that broke out and acting yesterday afternoon. It spread to
almost four hundred acres. Some evacuation warnings still in effect.
The last pieces of debris have been cleared from properties
(03:08):
damaged in the wildfire in Altadena. The US Army Corps
of Engineers announced the milestone yesterday, more than seven months
after the fire tore through neighborhoods. On January seventh, Almost
one and a half million tons of debris has been
cleared from more than fifty six hundred properties. A man
who is apparently running away from ice agents at a
home depot in Monrovia has been hit and killed when
(03:30):
he ran out onto the freeway. Happened yesterday morning at
the home depot on Mountain Avenue. Monrovia's city manager says
there is no ongoing ICE activity in Monrovia and the
city has not received any information from ICE. President Trump
has left the White House on his way to a
face to face meeting with Russia's President Putin at Joint
Base Elmandor Richardson Elmendorff Richardson in Alaska. ABC Stephen Portenoy
(03:55):
is going to join us in just a couple of minutes,
tell us the latest on that before you dig into
building or renovating, or maybe just making some small changes
to your home, our house. Whisper Dean Sharp is going
to join us to tell us why design matters most.
He says it a lot. He's going to explain why
and how you can design your home like a pro.
(04:16):
One guy got fed up with all the trash around La,
so he set out on a mission and has created
a movement. Heather Brooker is going to tell us about
clean La with me. You're gonna love this story. The
aliens have returned. Will Gans is going to tell us
about Hulu's latest offering and the dark side of reality TV.
Speaker 6 (04:35):
Oh, that could be a good one.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Let's get started with some of the stories coming out
of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom, Governor Newsom says
he is moving forward with a special election in November
to ask voters for permission to redraw the state's congressional maps.
Newsom says California must do it to counter a similar
effort underway in Texas.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
We can't stand.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Back and watch this democracy disappear district by district, all
across this country, not just in Texas.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
President Trump is asked Republicans in Texas to send more
Republicans to Congress by redrawing congressional maps. Newsom says California
can do the same for Democrats. Republican state Assemblyman Carl
de Mayo says the governor is using the initiative in
Texas as an excuse to overturn a measure passed by
voters in California more than a decade ago.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
Newsomb and Sacramento politicians have always been opposed to the
Independent Citizens' Restricting Commission.
Speaker 7 (05:27):
They opposed it.
Speaker 8 (05:28):
When voters first passed the measure back in twenty ten,
and they've always been looking.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
For a scheme of vehicle to nullify it.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Demio says, a lawsuit will be filed in the next
ten days on several constitutional challenges. He says there is
also an effort to fight Newsom's effort at the ballot box,
and federal immigration agents showed up outside Governor Newsom's press
conference in downtown LA.
Speaker 7 (05:51):
While the governor spoke alongside other Democratic leaders at the
Japanese American National Museum in Little Tokyo, border Patrol agents
arrested he suspected illegal image Grint, who was setting up
a fruit stand outside Ellemir Bass rushed over to the
scene and says the Border patrol's action was just to
antagonize new something.
Speaker 9 (06:07):
There was no danger.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Here, there was no need to detain anyone here, and
there was certainly no need to have a provocative app
right here.
Speaker 7 (06:15):
Das says it was no coincidence that Border patrol agents
were near the press conference. The Border Patrol says it
was just a regular roving patrol. Michael Monks KFI News
time to.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Say good morning to ABC's Stephen Portnoy. So, Stephen, today's
the big day and we can see Air Force one
is getting ready to take off headed for Alaska.
Speaker 10 (06:36):
It's about a seven hour flight, Amy and the President
will land at a certain point, and then he'll begin
his conversation with Vladimir Putin. He says he'll know in
the first few minutes whether it will be successful. But
even as the President says on social media, high stakes
in all caps, exclamation point, exclamation point, exclamation point, he's
also gone out of his way not to set expectations
(06:58):
for this too high. Today, all he wants to do
is set the table for the next meeting, which he
says should happen very shortly. Of course, the presidents also
said that there may not be a second meeting with
lotimers Lensky at all. He said yesterday that there's a
twenty five percent chance this meeting could be a failure.
Now the obvious question is what will come of this.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
You know.
Speaker 10 (07:22):
The president's aides have described this as a listening exercise,
a chance for Trump to hear directly from Putin what
it'll take to end the war. He's spoken of the
need for land swaps, and Putin has expressed some measure
of excitement about the idea that the American leader is
now talking about a way to end the war in
a way that his predecessors. His predecessor, Joe Biden didn't,
(07:45):
and I guess we'll see. But Trump really wants to
get Putin and Zelensky in the same room together, and
he even suggested that maybe that could happen in Alaska.
Speaker 6 (07:56):
Well, we'll see, okay.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
And how quickly?
Speaker 6 (08:01):
So it's a seven hour flight.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
Now, are they meeting like right after they get there
or do we have any idea what time the meeting's
supposed to happen.
Speaker 11 (08:07):
You know, it's all very vague.
Speaker 10 (08:09):
The bottom line is we'll all just have to strap
in for the day and watch it all play out.
Now I mean this, I mean, you know, the President
has talked about a press conference. R there's nothing scheduled,
and so I guess we'll just have to wait for
the men to emerge.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
If they emerge together.
Speaker 10 (08:21):
The President said yesterday that maybe it'll be a joint
news conference, but with him and Putin if it goes well.
If it goes poorly, Trump will hold his own news
conference and then head back here to Washington.
Speaker 6 (08:30):
So right after the meeting, we're going to know whether
things went well or not.
Speaker 11 (08:33):
I mean, that's all there is to it.
Speaker 10 (08:34):
It's not like there's a set of deliverables and a
communicate and you know, it'll just be the two men
in a room for a conversation that Trump says he
wants to have face to face, and then we'll have
a readout.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
Okay, So I'm curious about the flights. I'm sure that
you've you must have been on them at some point.
That's a long fight. I mean, it's not as long
as going overseas, or maybe it is longer in some
set instances. But when they're on those flights, I mean,
is that working all the time? Is it sleeping to
get rest? Is it just chilling playing video games? What
do they do on the flights?
Speaker 10 (09:06):
Well, and you say they, who do you mean? I
mean the president of the United States. It can conduct
a wide range of business. He has a number of
aids on the flight, and he'll obviously full communications access.
He may watch the television. You know, it's a working
office that flies at you know, fifty thousand or forty
thousand feet whatever it is. Seven hours is a fairly
(09:28):
long flight for that seven forty seven with its four engines.
But ultimately, and and by the way, ELMADORF. Richardson the
joint base where this is happening is a typical refueling
stop for Air Force one as it heads to for example, Asia.
I have stopped in Anchorage on presidential trips to Asia, right,
(09:48):
So yeah, I think that I think that answers your
question about the flight.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
Absolutely, and we're gonna see if we can answer more
questions about any progress was made as we watch later today, ABC,
Stephen Portnoy, thank you so much. You bet all right,
let's get back to some of the stories coming out
of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. Former President Obama
says he supports the Texas House members who left the
state to prevent a vote on registricting. He told them
(10:12):
during a virtual meeting yesterday that their actions were inspiring others.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Because of your actions, because of your courage. What you've
seen is California responding other states looking at what they
can do to offset this mid decade jerry mandering that
is highly irregular.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Texas Representative Gene Wu says Obama's endorsement is proof that they,
in his words, have the support of Democrats at every level.
Obama was joined by former Attorney General Eric Holder, who
outlined plans to counter Republican redistricting efforts nationwide. A three
point three percent rise in the producer Price Index has
some financial analysts saying they are concerned about the inflation
(10:53):
to follow. Bank Great Washington Bureau chief Mark Hamrick says
if businesses are paying more for wholesale, retail prices will rise.
Speaker 4 (11:01):
This is, I would.
Speaker 12 (11:02):
Say, incredibly concerning, because what we're seeing is that this
pricing pressure is building farther back in the supply chains
yet to reach the consumer At the fullest extent.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
He says, the PPI is the highest it's been since
twenty twenty two. AT and T has agreed to pay
one hundred and seventy seven million dollars to settle claims
over two data breaches last year. Eligible customers can get
up to seventy five hundred dollars through the Kroll Settlement
Administration website. Claims are due by no Vermber eighteenth. I
(11:36):
am an AT and T customer. I'm going there seventy
five hundred bucks. Yeah, it says up to.
Speaker 6 (11:43):
Though, so it's I'd probably get three dollars.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
A nuclear power plant in Florida may be a ticking
time boss.
Speaker 8 (11:49):
The federal report released by The Tampa Bay Times says
staff at the Saint Lucy Power Plant north of Palm
Beach are too scared to report safety hazards even anonymously.
The report detailed suppression, intimidation, and operational neglect at the
aging facility, resulting in safety violations and worsening shutdowns. More
anonymous complaints were made there last year than any other
nuclear facility in the country. Florida Power Light, which runs
(12:11):
the plant, says it's safe and reliable and is currently
asking for a ten billion dollar electric great hike, the
largest in US history, despite recently cutting a quarter of
its nuclear workforce. Michael Krozer Kfine News.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
Tropical Storm Aarin is expected to become a hurricane sometime
today as it turns in the Atlantic Ocean. The storm's
expected to generate life threatening surf and rip currents in
Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands before it heads toward
the Bahamas. Forecasters say it's still too soon to tell
if it will make landfall on the East Coast. The
company behind popular candies like M and M, Skittles and Starbars,
(12:46):
says it'll soon only use natural dye.
Speaker 13 (12:48):
The company making the move in response to Health and
Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Junior's initiative to rid
foods of petroleum based synthetic dyes. The FDA director says
some studies show links to some health problems for the dies,
but scientists caution that the evidence for health risks are
not that clear.
Speaker 1 (13:08):
ABC's Michelle Fransen reports Wrigley Mars will exclusively use natural
dyes starting next year, but it stopped short of committing
to making all of its brands with natural colors, saying
it's continuing to review solutions. Hey, the Dodgers, as I mentioned,
taken on the Padres tonight. We got Ann and Amy
(13:30):
in a classic showdown. Producer has just given me the stink.
Speaker 6 (13:34):
I right now.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
The Dodgers will take on the Padres at Dodger Stadium.
The first pitch goes out at seven o'clock. You can
listen to all the Dodger games on AM five seventy
LA Sports Live from the Gallpin Motors Broadcast Booth, and
stream all Dodgers games in HD on the iHeartRadio app
keyword AM five seventy LA Sports. Hey, yesterday I did
like a mashup of Amy's on It and Out and About.
(13:58):
We went to the Look Cinema in Glendale and saw
Jurassic World Rebirth. Got a couple of fun talkbacks about that.
Want to share those with you in just a couple
of minutes. I love listener insights. Also, if you ever
want a way in, you can on the iHeartRadio app.
Just click on that little microphone in the upper right
hand corner and give us a holler.
Speaker 6 (14:20):
Let us know what you think.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
Federal immigration agents have conducted a law enforcement operation in
Little Tokyo at the same time Governor Newsom was delivering
his speech in LA about putting congressional redistricting on the
November fourth ballot. I says one person was detained and
have denied their action was connected to Newsom's event. Police
are trying to find the person who's been throwing bags
full of dog feces at the LGBTQ Plus Resource Center
(14:45):
building in bell It's happened several times. The guys so
far has been able to avoid surveillance cameras. Ten bags
of feces were found on the buildings awning yesterday before
the center opened. Comedian Paul Rodriguez has been arrested for
a second time this year. He was picked up in
Burbank Monday, night on suspicion of having xanax and fentanel.
(15:07):
He denies the drugs or his A woman with him
was also arrested. Police say she had xenix and heroin
in her purse. At six oh five, it's handle on
the news, damn the voters. Governor Newsom says it's full
speed ahead with redistricting in California. Bill's going to dig
into that a little bit more for you. Right now,
let's say good morning to the host of Home on KFI.
It's our house with Bird Dean Sharp. Morning Dean, Good
(15:29):
morning Amy. Okay, so this is a recurring theme with you,
but we're going to dig into it a little bit today,
and that is that design matters most absolutely.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
It is literally the mantra of my show. I mean,
it undergirds everything we do every weekend here because it's
the thing that I believe the average homeowner understands the least,
but needs to understand the most if they really want
their remodeled dollars to go in as far as they
(16:00):
can go in the right direction, and if they really
want to transform their home not just you know, make
it cuter or you know, kind of keep up with
what they think are the fads, but I mean transform
it into something truly special.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
Design matters most, okay, And so why is that, Well,
it's for a number of reasons.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
In fact, that's what we're going to talk about on
Sunday ten reasons why design matters most. One of the
facts is the is that we don't really think about this.
It's the subconscious thing that happens to us every single day.
But you know, the buildings that we move through, the
spaces that we build for ourselves that we move through,
(16:43):
they they shape us.
Speaker 11 (16:44):
They they affect us on every level.
Speaker 2 (16:48):
I remember my first design mentor when I was first
starting to design custom homes. He told me, he says,
you know what, we are making decisions here every day
that affect people in the most subtle and profound ways.
If somebody gets up in the middle of the night
because they need to get a drink of water, we
are going to determine the experience they have as they
(17:09):
make their way to the bathroom or the sink or
wherever that is and get back into bed. These are
our decisions that are being made. And you know, I
took that very seriously, and it works itself out on
every level. Winston Churchill not an architect, but he said,
in my opinion, one of the most important things that
you could ever say about architecture, which was he said,
(17:31):
you know, we shape our buildings, and thereafter every day
they shape us. And that is just one of the
reasons why design matters most in your home, because your
home has such a long way to go to get
from where it is to being the thing that's truly
an extension of your life.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
Yeah, and think about it, you know, I mean, you
spend so much time in it, and you immediately when
you started talking about how you know, you have to
plan out everything from you know, the design so you
can go to the bathroom and not trip over something
in the middle of the night. My friend and her
husband just designed their home and they went, I don't
(18:09):
know how back and forth with their builder about where
to put this particular door. Is it going to swing
this way or is it going to swing this way
from the pantry, Like it was a huge thing. It
took them like weeks to figure it, like to make
a final decision so that it was done correctly, you know,
And they did that a lot where they were going,
well is it this or is it this? And I
(18:29):
was like, going, gee, you're putting a lot of thought
into that, but it sounds like you should be.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
You should be, You really should be, because this is
something These are decisions you're going to live with in
theory for decades, right, for a lot of people, for
the rest of their lives. If you're living in the
home that's your you know, you know, dream home, or
you're this is it for us home. So the point
is that you bring up another point too, that they
(18:54):
were making these decisions with their builders, which are of
course good decisions to make. It always gives me a
certain twinge in my heart, though, when I hear about this,
because one of the mistakes that homeowners make is they
turn to builders as kind of their proxy designers along
the way instead of getting professional design help. And I
(19:18):
say that not to disbuilders I am one, but to
say that, you know, a contractor is not a designer.
And I don't mean that there aren't contractors who have
design experience or who are talented or creative. What I'm
saying is you just got to understand that that contractor
acquired their license. They're getting their contractor's license in whatever
(19:41):
field they are no design training was part of that process, right,
So whether or not you get a contractor who has
a lot of real creative design experience or an education
in design, and I have seen it every day, it
makes a difference. And so that's something that like in
(20:01):
the high end market, in the in the estate market,
it's kind of understood and there's a real slice in
the division between our culture when it comes to that
high end to state market. If you're going to change
something about your house, you just know the first person
you call is the architect or the designer, the decorator
or whoever you know, whatever creative storyteller. That's the first call.
(20:24):
And then once all of that is hammered out, then
the contractors get called in to execute it. But in
the mainstream, we've been taught through commercials or media all
sorts of like if you're going to redo your kitchen,
the very first thing you do is, I wait, better
call a kitchen contractor. And suddenly it's a contractor who's
involved before the design has been flushed out. And so
(20:47):
that's one of the things that I get on my
soapbox every weekend about begging people think this through, take
the time and get it designed.
Speaker 1 (20:56):
Okay, Well, on a happy note, their door opens perfectly.
Speaker 6 (20:59):
Now, I'm glad.
Speaker 11 (21:01):
I'm so glad.
Speaker 6 (21:03):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
Ten reasons why dem design matters most. You can hear
more about all of them with Dean Sharp this weekend.
You can listen to him from six to eight tomorrow
morning right here on KFI and nine to noon on Sundays.
It's Home with Dean Sharp, and you can follow Dean
at Home with Dean.
Speaker 6 (21:22):
Thank you, mister Sharp, Thanks Amy, all right.
Speaker 1 (21:26):
A man's been killed while running from immigration agents in Monrovia.
Speaker 9 (21:29):
Please say. It happened just before ten yesterday morning during
an ice operation at a home depot on Mountain Avenue.
Monrovias City manager says the man took off on foot,
crossed Evergreen Avenue and ran onto the eastbound two ten Freeway,
where he was struck by a vehicle. He was taken
to a hospital but later died. City officials say they
have no details on the ice operation itself, and no
further immigration activity is reported in the city. Brigidia Degastino
(21:51):
o KFI News.
Speaker 1 (21:51):
A man who allegedly pointed a gun at passing cars
near the five Freeway in Arlita has been shot by
LAPD officers. Police were called late yesterday afternoon about a
guy with a gun threatening drivers near Branford Street and
Arleida Avenue. It's not clear what led up to the
police shooting. The man who was hurt was taken to
the hospital. He's listed in stable condition. A large branch
(22:12):
that fell and killed an eight year old boy in
Calabasas was reportedly from a tree that was known to
be in bad shape.
Speaker 11 (22:19):
The Orange County Register reports an employee with the tree
care company warned the oak tree was decaying one day
before the branch fell. It happened during a summer camp
at King Gellette Ranch Park on July ninth. The boy
who was under the tree died and several other people
were injured. They include an eleven year old girl who
suffered a broken leg, a five year old boy who
suffered lacerations to the head, and a seventy three year
(22:40):
old man who suffered a concussion. King Gellette Ranch is
managed by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority. Daniel Martindale
CAFI News.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
The FBI and FAA are investigating the man who allegedly
attacked the crew and passengers on a flight to LA
official say David Carter Junior from LA was intoxicated when
he yelled racial slurs and swung a skateboard around on
the flight Wednesday.
Speaker 6 (23:04):
The flight was.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
Diverted to Colorado, where he was taken off the plane,
and he charges will be referred to the US Attorney's
office in Colorado. Organizers of the twenty twenty eight Olympics
in LA want to make a deal.
Speaker 14 (23:15):
Naming rights for select venues are now up for sale,
breaking a long standing IOC tradition in deals worth millions.
Honda and Comcast are already on board, with more opportunities
for up to nineteen temporary sites. LA twenty eight chair
Casey Wasserman says the revenue will supplement the privately funded
games six point nine billion dollar budget, noting US sports
fans are used to branded arenas. Iconic venues like the Coliseum,
(23:39):
Rose Bull and Dodger Stadium won't be renamed and IOC
field of play ad bands remain. The move is part
of LA's push to reshape Olympic norms, as it did
in nineteen eighty four. Other Brooker Kfi.
Speaker 1 (23:49):
News, I think the move is to find a way
to create more money. Do you think, Yeah, Yeah, that's
what I think. Firefighters have stopped the spread of a
fast moving fire and act in that quickly. We grew
to four hundred acres yesterday afternoon. Fire has been attacked
both on the ground and by water dropping aircraft from above.
It's six percent surrounded. The fire near Gorman in the
Grapevine has grown to just under six hundred acres across,
(24:12):
with lines dug around forty percent of it. Northbound lanes
were closed for a while yesterday, backing up traffic four miles.
A man in Big Bear has been arrested for allegedly
selling magic mushrooms out of a now defunct church. The
church was called the Jah Healing Cannabis Church. It was
shut down three years ago. San Berdandino County Sheriff's deputies
(24:33):
arrested the guy on suspicion of illegal sales of psilocybin mushrooms.
At six so five is handle on the news. Governor
Newsom's big redistricting event in La got iced. So we
did our mini mash up yesterday of out and about
and Amy's on it. We went to the Look Cinema
in Glendale and saw Jurassic World rebooth got a couple
(24:53):
of talkbacks about it. First, about the cinema itself.
Speaker 15 (24:58):
Hi, Amy's talking about the news varience of going to cinemas,
the reclining, seeds, the service and the bar and all that.
What she's not talking about is the quality. Is it
any good? The answer mostly is no, not even as
good as your TV that you can buy from Costco.
You know, the TVs that are four K high dynamic range. Yeah,
(25:19):
most theater presentations are in plain, old, thirty year old
technology of two K with no HDR.
Speaker 6 (25:25):
Okay, so you got a point.
Speaker 1 (25:26):
I don't disagree with you, but I will say that
movies like this I think are more fun to be
seen on a huge screen. I know people have huge
screens in their homes. I have like a fifty five inch,
which is tiny in comparison, but I liked the big
screen and the look cinema is really The recliners are
super comfortable, and the food was good and you can
(25:48):
get cocktails. So I'm still all behind. I'm all about that.
And then as far as the movie.
Speaker 6 (25:54):
Goes, this is Darren.
Speaker 16 (25:57):
I just want to say the Park movie, if you
notice towards the end or that mutant dinosaur with the
four arms picks up the guy and rips him in half.
If you look at the dinosaur's face and that whole sequence,
(26:17):
it's a rip off from from what?
Speaker 4 (26:22):
From what?
Speaker 6 (26:24):
The talk back cut off. Oh it took too long,
cut him off. Darn, what is it?
Speaker 1 (26:30):
It looks it did the dinosaur or whatever the heck
it was. The mutant didn't really look like a dinosaur,
which was one of my big beefs with the movie.
But I want to know is it from Alien? It's
not alien though, It's something else, and I can't put
my finger on it. So I would love to hear
if you want to holler, hit us up again on talkback,
what does the monster dinosaur look like? Okay, Our Heather
(26:50):
Brooker has caught up with a man who's cleaning up
La one street at a time.
Speaker 14 (26:58):
Before the city wakes. Naula is already out here, sweeping, bagging,
breathing life back into forgotten corners of La California.
Speaker 17 (27:07):
In La is such a beautiful place, and it's so
sad that it's so trashy.
Speaker 11 (27:13):
He tells me.
Speaker 14 (27:13):
He couldn't stand the side of all the trash littered
across La La Land. So ten months ago he started
cleaning the streets of La with a broom, a bag,
and his own two hands, picking up bottles, boxes, food wrappers,
junk and gunk tossed aside by the masses.
Speaker 17 (27:29):
The elicious part. That was my first spot. I started cleaning.
Then I started doing the streets Alice's neighborhoods, everywhere. So
whatever I can clean, I just do it. Wowow what
we want to do here.
Speaker 14 (27:42):
He's picked up about fifteen hundred bags of trash since then,
built several trash bins, and accidentally started a movement clean
La with me.
Speaker 17 (27:50):
We have to do something. If the government, if the myyers,
if the governor, if they're not doing it, we have
to come and start doing it.
Speaker 14 (27:59):
Videos of himicking up trash on the streets of La
have gone viral now. Wan says he's using the power
of community to mobilize volunteers across neighborhoods.
Speaker 17 (28:09):
Right all right, thanks, thank you.
Speaker 16 (28:12):
I actually got to know actually got you know, got
to know you from Instagram.
Speaker 14 (28:17):
This isn't a city program. It's one man's persistence turning
trash into teamwork, grime into goals, and a Starbucks cup
into just another trophy in his trash bag Starbucks.
Speaker 11 (28:32):
David, So, what do.
Speaker 14 (28:37):
You hope to accomplish by starting this movement and what
are you hoping that city and state leaders see when
they see you out there picking up trash like this.
Speaker 17 (28:50):
I want to inspire more people. I want to inspire.
I want to inspire people clean the neighborhoods in start
clean the neighborhoods. I someday, I hopefully the you know,
the city, the governor, everybody does in office. See my videos,
they hear me, they see me, and they said doing something.
Speaker 3 (29:10):
I know.
Speaker 17 (29:11):
People said this is impossible. I said, nothing is impossible
when you really wanted to do it, I didn't.
Speaker 14 (29:17):
Know like this man, what began with one room on
one block is now a weekly movement. Clean LA with
Me is turning quiet acts of care into a citywide
chorus of change.
Speaker 17 (29:28):
Thank you all my volunteerists. Thanks to everybody that would
add you guys, that would be not possible, this said,
thank you everybody.
Speaker 6 (29:38):
Heather Brooker ka fine news. I love that Clean La
with Me. We should all do it. I feel like
a slacker now compared to him.
Speaker 1 (29:44):
I know, well, even if you go out and just
grab a few things. I mean, I pick up stuff
when I see it in my little neighborhood. But I
think his, uh, his, a project might be a little
bit bigger than that. But I love that, love that.
Thank you, Heather. Time to get in your business with
Bloomberg's Courtney Donaho Morning, Courtney.
Speaker 13 (30:01):
Good morning, Happy Friday.
Speaker 6 (30:02):
Happy Friday.
Speaker 1 (30:03):
So if you're losing a tooth, don't expect to get
paid off big for it.
Speaker 5 (30:08):
I know that's a fairy is sticking to a budget
this year. Kids, they're waking up to find a little
less under the pillow after a visit from her favorite fairy.
A poll from Delta Dental finds the average value of
the lost tooths drop fourteen percent this past year to
five dollars.
Speaker 6 (30:24):
The tooth fairy is also.
Speaker 5 (30:25):
Pinching pennies on a first tooth. You typically get a
bigger gift, that's what my kiddos say. But that fell
twelve percent to six dollars in twenty four cents.
Speaker 6 (30:36):
Six dollars for a tooth. Nice to get. My kids
want more than that.
Speaker 1 (30:41):
That's crazy. Inflation is just out of control, okay.
Speaker 5 (30:44):
But it's it's interesting that the tooth Fairy usually tracks
the S and P five hundred, but this year stocks
are up and a treat for a tooth is down.
Speaker 1 (30:51):
Okay, well then I'm okay with that. That's a lot
of money for it rotten tooth.
Speaker 6 (30:55):
Do you save your kid's teeth?
Speaker 5 (30:59):
I save the first one, and then I'm I do,
But it's it's it's just strange because at first I
tried doing it with my daughter. I put it in
a bag and I'm like, this is really strange. A
whole bag of teeth. Yeah, I gotta pair this down.
So I just saved the first one for both of them. Yeah,
a little bit of relief if you're.
Speaker 1 (31:17):
Looking to buy a home, this is good news, right, yes,
And also if you want to go in and get
a refi.
Speaker 5 (31:23):
Mortgage rates have dropped for a fourth straight week. Freddie
Max says the average for a thirty or fixed loan
six point five eight percent, But the decline in home
financing costs that would definitely breathe a little bit of
life into the struggling housing market.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
Okay, and if you want somebody else's home. Airbnb is
rolling out a new way to book trips and win
over travelers who are on a budget.
Speaker 5 (31:45):
Yeah, they're they're now letting guests book a vacation place
without paying upfront, So the feature is called reserve now,
pay later, so you don't need to pay the full
amount until eight days before the end of the listings
free cancellation period. But Airbnb is hoping to move will
drive a lot more reservations. Last week, Airbnb warned investors
that its growth may be pressured for the rest of
(32:06):
twenty twenty five.
Speaker 1 (32:07):
Okay, And Warren Buffett's making a big bet on United Health.
Speaker 5 (32:10):
Oh yes, he definitely is. Shares of United Health surging
in early training and it's actually helping the dow right now,
doubt futures are up two hundred and sixty eight points,
So he's looking at a turnaround for the health insurance.
So his Berkshire Hathaway building a stake in United Health
last quarter. It's worth about one point six billion dollars.
But the investment comes as the company is facing so
(32:33):
many issues, and one of them obviously last year when
United Health executive Brian Thompson was shot to death of Manhattan.
Speaker 1 (32:40):
Yeah, and you just mentioned the bump in the stock market.
I just saw that retail sales numbers are out like
auer point five percent.
Speaker 5 (32:48):
Yes, yeah, we just got retail sales numbers. Everybody's been
waiting for them, and we're seeing a broad advance in that.
So retail sales rose in July. We're seeing it up
about half a percent month over month. So this is so,
and this is adjusted for inflation. This is just a
hair short, but it's it's still we're looking at still gains.
People are still spending. Car sales was one of the
(33:11):
big parts of this. A major online promotions was another
one that really boosted boosted things. Sales at online retailers
really gave a big pop last quarter. As I'm going
through the numbers right now, but yesterday it was very different.
We have producer prices, those numbers came out and that
rose in July by the most in three years. And
this is suggesting that companies are passing along the higher
(33:31):
costs related to tariff. So at the end of the day,
the Dow finished little changed.
Speaker 1 (33:35):
Okay, getting in your business with Bloomberg's Courtney Donaho like
we do every day, except next week we're not going
to because you're on vacation, so we'll have somebody else
from Bloomberg in with us and enjoy your time.
Speaker 5 (33:46):
I'll miss you, but it'll be very nice to take
a little bit of a break.
Speaker 1 (33:49):
Awesome, Thanks Courtney, and we'll talk to you when you
get back.
Speaker 4 (33:52):
See you later.
Speaker 6 (33:54):
But still we're doing in your business. Don't worry.
Speaker 1 (33:56):
We're going to get you up to date with all
the happenings in the business world every day.
Speaker 6 (34:00):
Five point forty.
Speaker 1 (34:01):
Governor Newsom has announced his plan to include redistricting on
the November fourth ballot for a special election to combat
what he called a clear attempt by President Trump to
rig the midterms by redrawing the maps in Texas.
Speaker 6 (34:15):
The man accused of.
Speaker 1 (34:15):
Throwing concrete chunks at federal agents in Paramount has pleaded
not guilty to forefelon accounts of assault on a federal officer,
and the current County Board of Education in Bakersfield has
unanimously approved a non binding resolution to ban transgender athletes
from girls' sports. Board officials say the move aligns with
the original intent of Title nine protections for female athletes.
(34:38):
We're just minutes away from handle on the news this morning,
the former first son has two words for the First
Lady over her threat to sue him for a billion dollars.
Right now, though, let's say good morning to ABC's Will
Gann's time to talk entertainment. We've got an unexpected hit.
I personally have not heard of it, but it's big
(35:00):
for Netflix.
Speaker 4 (35:02):
It's everywhere. It had sort of been in my periphery
for a little while, you know, as I'm browsing Netflix
titles and things like that, it kept suggesting K pop
demon Hunters to me, and I.
Speaker 6 (35:12):
Was that's funny because it didn't suggest it to me.
Speaker 4 (35:17):
Well, listen, now that you're talking about it, your phone
is definitely gonna be listening to you and it'll come
up on your suggestions. But here's the thing with this movie.
So it came out at the end of June. It's
been in Netflix's top ten films, you know, since then,
but it has since become the fourth most watched movie
on Netflix ever and the number one most watched animated
(35:40):
feature on Netflix ever.
Speaker 3 (35:42):
And there's a.
Speaker 4 (35:43):
Song from the soundtrack that just hit number one on
the Billboard Hot one hundred. And this is the first
time that a girl group has had the number one
spot on the Billboard Hot one hundred since Destiny's Child
in two thousand and one. So this song is this song,
this movie, all of it is just sort of taking
over and next week in movie theaters, you know, you
(36:04):
can go to special sing along screening. So it's pretty fascinating,
how you know, Typically something will come out in theaters
and then it hits streaming after that. This is doing
the reverse. It came out on Netflix, built up a
fan base, and then it's coming to theaters next weekend.
So I watched it yesterday after reading all of these
crazy stats, and you know, it.
Speaker 11 (36:24):
Is a lot of fun.
Speaker 4 (36:25):
It's about this girl group that are pop stars, and
then you know, in their spare time they're saving Earth
from evil demon spirits. So it's it's fun and the
best thing about it, in my.
Speaker 2 (36:37):
Opinion, is the music.
Speaker 4 (36:39):
It really is catchy. And now whenever Golden comes on
the radio or on your Spotify shuffle or something like that,
you'll know where it came from.
Speaker 6 (36:47):
I think.
Speaker 1 (36:48):
I think it's really interesting. It's like they test marketed
and went, hey, we could make money on this.
Speaker 4 (36:52):
One exactly exactly, and it's sort of you know, for theaters,
it's a big win, of course, because when people come
in with their families, and stuff. You know, not only
are they going to buy the movie ticket, but then
they'll buy merch and popcorn and drink some candy and
all of these things. So very interesting sort of business
concept at play here.
Speaker 6 (37:11):
Okay, let's see how catchy this little tune is.
Speaker 1 (37:28):
Okay, I don't know if that's enough to spark me
to watch it, but maybe i'll give I'll dip it in.
Speaker 6 (37:35):
And it's not a series, it's a movie.
Speaker 2 (37:37):
It's a movie.
Speaker 4 (37:38):
It's a movie. It's an hour and thirty nine minutes,
so it's pretty manageable time wise.
Speaker 1 (37:41):
Okay, what about this one? The Aliens are returning to Hulu.
Speaker 4 (37:45):
That's that's right, that's right, So channel your inner Sigourney
Weaver and breaks yourself because Alien Earth is a TV
version of the movie franchise that we love. It's a
spinoff series and the first two episodes dropped on Hulu
this week. For anyone who loves the movies, they'll love
this show. It has ninety six percent on Rotten Tomatoes,
(38:06):
which is pretty impressive, and it will drop new episodes weekly.
And episode two, I won't give too much away, but
there's a xenomorph sequence that is like top tier sci
fi horror vibes, and yeah, for anyone who's into that genre,
this is going to be a really fun show to watch,
I think.
Speaker 1 (38:25):
Okay, so I have to share something with you. Alien
the first movie haunted me, and I also came to
the realization that that alien was really a giant cockroach
that was mutantized after a nuclear war and that's the
only thing that survived.
Speaker 4 (38:46):
I mean, then maybe this show won't be for you.
Speaker 6 (38:49):
Am all right, fine, maybe this one okay?
Speaker 1 (38:53):
And then let's take a look at the ugh, this
is intriguing to me, the darker side of reality TV.
Speaker 6 (39:00):
It's a new three part docu series.
Speaker 4 (39:03):
Yes, so it's hit Netflix today. It's called Fit for TV,
and it's taking a look at everything that was happening
behind the scenes and on screens during The Biggest Loser,
that whole TV reality TV, you know, series that sort
of captivated all of us for several years a couple
of decades ago, and this is following up with some
(39:24):
of the contestants and some of the coaches and really
pulling back the curtain on what has to happen for
something to be good television. And you know, whatever the
cost is afterwards. So for anyone who loves that show,
I think this is a really fascinating docu series. It's
you know, it'll have you thinking and second guessing and
(39:46):
all of those things. But yeah, it's a riveting watch,
I think.
Speaker 1 (39:51):
Okay, and then something else so we just can't forget.
There's a new movie on the stream today. It's not
free yet, or it's not free anyway because you're paying
for streaming services, but apparently the new Superman movie HiT's
Apple TV and a couple other ones today.
Speaker 4 (40:12):
Which will be super exciting. And by the way, James
Gunn has said he already has a treatment done for
the Next Superman, a follow up that will feature David
corn So as the Man of Steel again.
Speaker 6 (40:22):
So I'm good with him.
Speaker 15 (40:24):
Meet.
Speaker 6 (40:25):
Yeah, I liked him.
Speaker 4 (40:26):
Yeah, yeah, he's Yeah, he's easy on the eyes and
a great presence on screen too, So yeah, very excited
for that.
Speaker 1 (40:33):
All right, ABC's well, Gans, thanks so much. As always,
we'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 2 (40:37):
All righty, have a great weekend, all.
Speaker 6 (40:39):
Right you two.
Speaker 1 (40:40):
Okay, So we were talking about the mashup, the Amy's
on it and the out and about where we went
to the Look Cinemas and Darren called in and said
it's like a total knockoff from another movie. That movie
is just a rip off of and then it cut off. Well,
thank you, Darren. Heck Amy, this is Darren.
Speaker 16 (41:02):
Sorry, my talkback got cut off. So what I was
referring to is the scene from Star Wars where Luke
is about to confront the Rank Corps in Return of
the Jedi and one of the guards, pig guards, gets
picked up and he gets chewed in half and then
he finally swallows him down. That's what I was bringing
(41:25):
to your attention.
Speaker 6 (41:26):
Darren. You are so right.
Speaker 1 (41:27):
We got another talkback too that he said, yeah, I
think it's from Return of the Jedi.
Speaker 6 (41:33):
That is it.
Speaker 1 (41:34):
It looks the face of that dinosaur looks like the
rancorps from Return of the Jedi.
Speaker 6 (41:40):
All right, it still doesn't look like a dinosaur. And
with that, our time is done. Handle on.
Speaker 1 (41:46):
The news is coming up next, so stick around for that.
This is KFI and KOST HD two Los Angeles, Orange
County live from the KFI twenty four hour newsroom for
producer and and technical producer Kno along with traffics specialist
