Speaker 5 (00:46):
Things.

Speaker 4 (00:46):
So much for starting your day with us. Lots going on.
But before we get started, let's let's do a fun
fact because.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Halloween is right around the corner, okay, which reminds me
of candy, and one of my favorites.

Speaker 4 (00:57):
Is kit kats.

Speaker 6 (00:58):
Oh yum, yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
Okay, So you know how kit cats come out and
they've got some new flavors along with the traditional, which
I like the traditional quite personally.

Speaker 6 (01:06):
Well.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
Japan has more than two hundred flavors of kit cats.
They're created for different regions and cities and seasons. So
here are some of them. Banana kit cat, blueberry cheesecake,
kit cat, oreo ice cream kit cat could be cut

(01:27):
and then there's some other ones that are a little
less traditional. There's baked potato kit.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
Cat, melon and.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
Cheese kit cat, gross with sabby kit cat, and vegetable
juice kit Cat.

Speaker 5 (01:45):
I had one of those ones. I don't remember what
flavor it was, and it's weird because it feels and
crunches exactly the same.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
As what you're used to.

Speaker 4 (01:53):
But you're like, what is this flavors?

Speaker 1 (01:55):
What is this assalting my mouth? I'll stick to the regular.
Here's what Ahead on wake Up called. Jimmy Kimmel's suspension
from Late Night TV was a ratings boost. Six point

to sign a deal today allowing Chinese company byte Dance
to sell TikTok. The White House says it will facilitate
the sale of the social media company to a group
of American investors. Bite Dance will retain less than twenty

(03:00):
percent of the stock. Congress voted last year to ban
the video sharing app for national security reasons unless it's
sold to a US company. After President Trump made a
kind of a right turn in support of Ukraine over Russia.
ABC's Karen Travis will or Karen Travers, it's going to

(03:21):
join us to tell us about a meeting between the
US and Russia and also what key ally the President
is sitting down with today.

Speaker 4 (03:28):
That's coming up in just a couple of minutes.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
We're going out and about to beautiful Big Bear Lake.
As you know, I went there last weekend. We're going
to check out the fifty fifth annual Octoberfest, and if
you haven't been, you're gonna want to go. We'll be
talking with the burger maistress of Octoberfest that's coming up
at five twenty, just one day left until I go
over the Edge to raise money for the Union Rescue Mission. Yes,

(03:52):
repelling twenty five stories off a building. We're close to
our goal, but we need your help.

Speaker 4 (03:57):
To get there.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
And we're going to be talking with the CEO of
the Union Rescue Mission about the event, and he's going
to tell you how your money, your donations will actually
help homeless people find their way home. So if you're
sitting on the fence, hopefully that's going to knock you
over the fence and help you make a donation. If
you want to make a donation right now, it's RM
dot org slash ote for Over the Edge. Let's get

(04:20):
started with some of the stories coming out of the
KFI twenty four hour newsroom. LA Mayor Bass has put
her signature on the multi billion dollar plan to expand
the Convention Center.

Speaker 7 (04:29):
The mayor says the two point six billion dollar expansion
project is important for the city. She's given the final

the women. He'll have to register as a sex offender

(05:21):
for at least ten years. The race for governor of

emergency at his home in LA and called paramedics after
experiences experiencing issues with his blood sugar well. Shatner's agency,
Talent Works, released a statement saying that report was false

Speaker 4 (06:28):
TMZ usually gets it right.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
So interesting, Let's get a first look at your morning
commute check in with will Cole Schreiber. We've got a
crash in downtown LA on the ten.

Speaker 5 (06:39):
It's actually the transition from the westbound side of the
ten to the one ten freeway. That transition road is
closed right now. No word is to one that's going
to reopen actually have an They are providing an estimate
possibly seven am, so it's going to be a little while.

Speaker 4 (06:54):
The traffic is backed up.

Speaker 5 (06:56):
Looks like from about Alameda on that westbound ten again,
the transition to the one ten freeway is shut down.

Speaker 4 (07:02):
That's all because of a bad crash there.

Speaker 5 (07:04):
If you are headed into the s LA interchange, you
might want to just take the one on one northbound
up to the one ten and then go down that
way because the ten westbound no Bueno four or five
northbounded Imperial Highway. We've got reports of a boulder in
the roadway on the on ramp there at Imperial, so.

Speaker 4 (07:21):
Watch out for that.

Speaker 5 (07:22):
And the ninety one westbound before McKinley two cars involved

the iHeartRadio app and said, there's another air show and

So do you see the Blue Angels They get to
land on shits on, like the flying chickens, thunder turns,
whatever they're called.

Speaker 12 (08:13):
And the Marines that Miramar blow things up. That's always

went and checked it out. General admission and parking is free,
kind of like at the Pacific Air Show, where you
know you can go and camp out on the beach.

Speaker 4 (08:30):
So there there is free admission.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
But then there's also several other options if you want
to upgrade a bit. There's the Devil Doug Chalet, there's
the Semper Fi Sale. Some of those include food and drinks,
the observation deck box seats, Grand stands lots of options.

that little microphone in the upper right hand corner. We'd
love to hear from you. Let's get back to some
of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four
hour newsroom. Texas Governor Greg Abbott says the attack on

Beautiful Bill, and they want to extend expiring Obamacare tax credits.

Speaker 1 (10:19):
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the White House memo

d c. Between a regional jet and a US Army

in Washington or anywhere in America.

Speaker 4 (11:05):

Speaker 1 (12:47):
When we come back, I feel a chicken dance coming on.
We're going out and about too beautiful Big bear Lake.
To check out the fifty fifth Annual Octoberfest. If you
haven't been after hearing this, gonna want to. We're gonna
be talking with the burger mistress of october Fest. She's
the woman who runs it all that's coming up next.
It's five point twenty on your Thursday morning wake up call.

Speaker 4 (13:12):
I'm trying to be healthy.

Speaker 1 (13:13):
I'm having cream of wheat for breakfast, and I thought
i'd be even more healthy. Instead of putting like splendor
or equal in it, I'm like, oh, we've got honey.
I'm gonna put honey in it. It's all over the place,
everything's sticky. Debormark's gonna kill me later.

Speaker 4 (13:28):
I'm not touching that area over there.

Speaker 1 (13:30):
Here's what we're following in the KFI twenty four hour newsroom.
California is number one in unemployment. The Bureau of Labor
Statistics says the jobless rate in California's five point five percent.
The national average is just over four percent. Experts say

a murderous character he created for an anime series holds
a bloody knife while confronting a female character whom he
calls the ghost of the person he killed. Fans suggest

(14:17):
the character looked a lot like Celeste Reevas, whose dismembered
body was found in David's car. The Dodgers could clinch
their twelfth National League West Division title in the past
thirteen years. Today, LA takes on the Diamondbacks in Arizona
following last night's five to four extra innings win.

Speaker 4 (14:36):
First pitch goes out at twelve forty.

Speaker 1 (14:38):
You can listen to the game on our sister station,
AM five seventy LA Sports. At six oh five, it's
handle on the news. Handles still on vacation. We got
Neil Sevadra sitting in the chair and we've got an
update on that shooting at the Ice detention facility in
Dallas yesterday. Wake up call has gone out and about

(15:00):
to the Big Bear october Fest, the Big Bear Lake Octoberfest.
We grabbed our beer steins and caught up with the
burger maistress, Monica Marini. So Monica for those who have
not been to Oktoberfest before, tell us what we're in
store for.

Speaker 11 (15:14):
If you haven't been to an Octoberfest before, you're gonna
have a great time.

Speaker 4 (15:18):
First of all, we are.

Speaker 11 (15:19):
In beautiful Bigger Lake, so beautiful. Can't deny that it's
gorgeous up here.

Speaker 1 (15:22):
I've never been here before this weekend, I mean it's
I'm just awed by house spectacular.

Speaker 11 (15:27):
Oh No, it's gorgeous up here, right. We are truly blessed.
So when you get in, you're gonna find the German bands. Inside,
we have German bands playing. Outside, we have the American band.
Definitely gonna want to come in. Grab a nice German beer.
We have a huge variety of German beers. Maybe get
a stein to have that beer in.

Speaker 4 (15:44):
Check out these steins.

Speaker 1 (15:45):
This is the October Fest Stein and Monica tell us,
I just learned a little trivia.

Speaker 4 (15:50):
Why do these steins have lids on them?

Speaker 11 (15:52):
So in Germany they have liz on the steins so
that no dust or nothing from the trees falls in
your beer. Let's staste nice and clean.

Speaker 4 (16:00):
Us Apparently you're drinking under the under the trees. You
got to protect that day.

Speaker 1 (16:05):
Okay, So tell us more about like how long has
this been going on, because I've talked to several people
in LA and They're.

Speaker 4 (16:11):
Like, oh my god, it's so much fun. I've been
going for years.

Speaker 11 (16:14):
So we are this year celebrating our fifty fifth anniversary.
So a very long time up here. So my father
started it way back in that start, yes, the way
back in the days when Big Parro was a really
small resort town and at that point in time, the
falls were really slow. Like he used to say, you
could roll a bowling ball down the highway and not

(16:35):
hit a car. So they decided, being from Germany, that
they would do in Octoberfest Yeah, to get yests to
come to their lodge, stayed their lodge, and it worked
and the towns people loved it, and we just kind
of went from there.

Speaker 1 (16:47):
Okay, so obviously there's a lot of locals here, but
obviously there's also tons of people who come in from
out of town. So what are they, I mean, like,
is their lives of lodging or their cabins? Where do
people stay because you don't want to just come up
in the day and then drive to come them out and.

Speaker 11 (17:00):
Yeah, yeah, so there are we have a lot of
different hotels up here, but we also have a ton
of Airbnb's, okay, so and at all different price ranges. Right,
So if you're coming with your fifteen best friends, there's
Airbnb's for that. If it's just a couple coming up,
there's also great condos and Airbnb's for that as well
as all our hotel problems.

Speaker 4 (17:19):
Okay, tell me about the food. Food, So we.

Speaker 11 (17:23):
Carry very traditional German food. We try to stay as
traditional here as possible to the Munich October best. Okay,
So we have frats, which are big favorite. Everybody wants
a brot and those come from a German butcher down
the hill. We also have curry wash, which we introduced
a couple of years ago, which is a street fair
food in Germany. You can go anywhere on the street

(17:44):
corner in Germany and get curry washed. Different regions have
different sauce, so we have curry wished. We have the
sour krouts, apustrudal pretzels, big.

Speaker 4 (17:52):
Big pretzel, little pretzels as well.

Speaker 11 (17:56):
So wide variety German food. And then if German food
just isn't your cup of tea, we also have burgers,
corn dogs, hot dogs, something forever.

Speaker 6 (18:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (18:05):
And of course then there's also a shopping which is
very important to me. I checked out some of the
shopping stuff.

Speaker 11 (18:11):
Yes, So we have a variety of vendors on what
we call our Bodenstrasa, which is the avenue of the booths.
Germany has one as well, a little bit bigger than ours.

Speaker 4 (18:20):
But we've got a.

Speaker 11 (18:20):
Variety of vendors making handcraft collectibles whatever you like. And
then we also have our boot that sells our t
shirts and signs and that type of thing.

Speaker 1 (18:28):
Okay, and now tell us when it is, because I
know it's September now and it's not October, but we
got a long time to go and lots.

Speaker 11 (18:34):
Of Octoberfest to sell, right, I know everyone always laughs
it's in September. Little fact though, Today is the official
opening of the MUNIUK October.

Speaker 4 (18:42):
Fest on September twentieth.

Speaker 11 (18:44):
Okay, Our Octoberfest starts right after Labor Day and we
run all the way through November eighth, ok every weekend.

Speaker 1 (18:50):
And where can we find more information about ticket prices
and dates and times and all that.

Speaker 11 (18:55):
You can head to our website which is big ber
Events dot com and all the details there.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
All right, Monica Marini, the burger Meistress, thank you so much.

Speaker 4 (19:04):
We're out and about at the Big Bear October Fest.

Speaker 1 (19:08):
Gotta tell you, it was a lot of fun and
the weather was spectacular, and we were talking earlier that
this was my first trip up to Big Bear and
it was just such a great experience.

Speaker 4 (19:20):
So if you're.

Speaker 1 (19:21):
Thinking about a little weekend to get away, big Bear
Lake a great option and again that Octoberfest goes through
next month, and I think starting on the first weekend
October they go Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Speaker 4 (19:34):
This weekend their Saturday Sunday only.

Speaker 1 (19:38):
And I did eat the Sauer Kraut, and I'm not
a big Sauer Kraut fan, but it was. It's Monica's
mom's recipe and her dad is the one who started
Octoberfest fifty five years ago.

Speaker 4 (19:51):
And I will tell you it was good. I ate
it all. It was good.

Speaker 1 (19:54):
You can take a sneak peek at what you're going
to see and drink and eat on my Instagram at
amy K King, and of course I would love it
if you would follow me again, it's at amy K
King and could also find it on Kfi's Instagram at
kfi Am six forty.

Speaker 4 (20:09):
I'm going to post that in just a little bit.

Speaker 1 (20:12):
A US citizen caught up in an immigration rate at
his car wash in Van Eys has filed a federal

need to go to the.

Speaker 1 (20:40):
He went outside to speak with agents and offer proof
that some of his employees were legally authorized to work,
but he got cursed at, pushed back, and body slammed
to the pavement. The man accused of killing his former

to the grounds, damped on it, and then threw it

(21:01):
off a balcony. That happened three weeks ago. He was
arrested Sunday and charged with animal cruelty, first degree burglary,
and vandalism. A man accused of making threats against a
church in Orange County has admitted to some of the charges.

Speaker 9 (21:15):

Speaker 1 (22:24):
Okay, that's really funny that those are words in the dictionary.
Oh still to come on, wake up call. We have
just one day left until I go over the edge.

In fact, I've decided this weekend I'm going to decorate
for Halloween because it's almost October.

Speaker 4 (23:46):
I already started my Christmas shopping.

Speaker 1 (24:00):
The stuff, right, why not get it out of the
way and then you're not spending It's not that last
minute rush exactly why you're spending a huge wad of
money right in December. Here's what we're following in the
KFI twenty four hour newsroom. LA Mayor bass is given
final approval to a two point sixty two billion dollar
renovation for the LA Convention Center. Supporters say it's going
to bring good union jobs and millions of dollars in

(24:22):
added tourist money to the area. The Howard Jarvis Taxpay Association, though,
says the one hundred million dollars per year in debt
payments required will saddle taxpayers with decades of debt at
the expense of other important priorities for the city. People
who've lost loved ones to murder will be gathering tonight
for the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims. A

(24:43):
memorial event and candlelight vigil will honor the lives of
murder victims around LA at six point thirty this evening
at the La County Sheriff's South LA Station on Imperial Highway.
Governor Newsom's decided against reinstating the state's tax credits for
electric vehicles. He's opting instead to expand charging station infrastructure,

(25:04):
and we need it. Experts have expressed concern that the
lack of incentives is going to slow EV sales. The
Alliance for Automotive Innovation says that as of last year,
about twenty seven percent of EV sales in the US.

(25:48):
goes on at both California Adventure Park and Disneyland Park
through October thirty.

Speaker 4 (25:54):
First.

Speaker 1 (25:55):

Call and throughout the day on KFI Am six forty,
So keep listening. We'll be given those away soon. Here's
what's coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom.

(26:16):
A woman in Santa Monica is putting up quite a
fight for a dead person.

Speaker 9 (26:20):
Eighty six year old Sarah Van Luvin retired from the
Los Angeles Unified School District on April the first, twenty sixteen.
That's the same day the Social Security Administration lists her
as deceased. It's unclear if the mistake was due to
a computer glitch or human error. Because of it, ben
Luvin has been wiped from the Medicare and health insurance systems.
Her bank and credit cards have also been canceled, and

(26:43):
she's had years worth of pension payments taken away. Mark Mayfield,
KOFI News.

Speaker 1 (26:48):
This is awful that you have to deal with us.
She's eighty six. For goodness sake, she's still alive and kicking.
Self checkout no longer.

Speaker 4 (26:56):
An option at four Vaughn's grocery stores in Long Beach.

Speaker 15 (26:59):
She comes after the city passed the line cracking down
on theft at grocery and drug stores. The Safe Stores
our Staff Stores ordinance requires one employee for every three
self checkout lanes. Customers are also limited to fifteen items
max and self checkout lanes, and items that require IDEA
verification or the removal of theft prevention measures cannot be
processed through self checkout stations. Daniel Martindale, CAFI News.

Speaker 4 (27:23):
Second Harvest Food Bank is celebrating ten years of its
permanent school pantry program.

Speaker 16 (27:28):
Leaders say the food bank is a lifeline for the
eighty six thousand children in Orange County who face food
in security. Young minds cannot learn unless they have not
only food to sell their valleies, but nutrition. Second Harvary
CEO Claudia Bonia Keller says they operate seven pantries year
round on school campuses, serving more than sixteen thousand people
each month with fresh produce, milk, protein, and pantry staples.

Speaker 1 (27:54):
September is Hunger Action Month. Cafi's Heather Broker says if
you need help or want to help, you can visit
feedoc dot org. Three billion people a month now use Instagram.

Speaker 12 (28:06):
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has shared this achievement in a
post to his Instagram account and applauded the incredible community
that's been built. The photo sharing app now joins the
ranks of Facebook and WhatsApp, which crossed the three billion
user mark earlier this year. The company last disclosed Instagram's
user figures in October of twenty twenty two, when Zuckerberg
said during an earnings call that the app had crossed

(28:28):
two billion monthly users. Deborah mark Koffive News Time.

Speaker 4 (28:32):
To Get in Your Business with Denise Pellegrini with Bloomberg Morning. Denise,
Good morning.

Speaker 8 (28:38):
We've got word of job cuts from Starbucks. Unfortunately they're
closing coffee shops and cutting nine hundred jobs. This is
a billion dollar restructuring and that's on top of the
eleven hundred positions company cut earlier this year. As the
new CEO, Brian Nicol kind of puts his stamp on
the company and really ramps.

Speaker 4 (28:56):
Up turnaround efforts. There.

Speaker 1 (28:57):
Wow, that's no fun. I was just at Starbucks. The
lines were just as long. Yeah, the lines are long,
but Starbucks is concerned. That's because it's keeping too many
people waiting, not because they're getting enough business. So he's
trying to make it faster for you to get your
drink as well. And of course he wants people to
sit around and maybe have two or three cups coffee
while they're at Starbucks instead of just you know, one

(29:20):
in the takeout line and then.

Speaker 4 (29:21):
Leaving get nice and jittery.

Speaker 1 (29:23):
We've got a problem with housing affordability in LA. That's
no surprise, but you got some new information.

Speaker 4 (29:28):
Yeah, Real estate.

Speaker 8 (29:29):
Data company Adam says California counties are among those leading
the nation when it comes to unaffordability last quarter, and
the situation is getting worse with it above the top
twenty five nationwide counties where owning a home required the
highest percentage of a typical residence. Wages last quarter twelve
were in California. This includes drum Roll, but no surprise,

(29:52):
Los Angeles and Orange Counties also, mortgage rates are falling,
but they're not so favorable in California.

Speaker 1 (30:00):
They're different in California than in different places.

Speaker 8 (30:03):
Yeah, every place has slightly different mortgage rates. New York
and California among the places, according to walletop where you
don't get as much of a break on Monday as
you do in some other places. Well, that seems ridiculous. Well,
you know, but on the other hand, you get to
live in California. Well there's the can't complaints.

Speaker 4 (30:20):
Yeah, that is true.

Speaker 1 (30:21):
Okay, So what do Target AMC and Taylor Swift have
in common?

Speaker 8 (30:25):
Okay, once again, Taylor Swift is getting back together with Target.

Speaker 4 (30:29):
The retailer will help. We're never ever ever getting back together.
That's she did not about Target. Target.

Speaker 8 (30:35):
She is absolutely getting back together. She's got this new
exclusive limited edition vinyl of Taylor Swift's The Life of
a Showgirl. It'll launch Friday, October third. Hundreds of Target
stores are going to be open at midnight for the
release of this event.

Speaker 4 (30:51):
I'm sure you're going to be there. Amy.

Speaker 8 (30:52):
There's also a movie theater event Taylor Swift, the official
release party of a Showgirl. That'll be an AMC locations
for Friday, October third through Sunday October fifth. We'll see
if that can top her last film in terms of sales.
You know, the previous AMC partnership, the twenty twenty three
Eras Tour film that was the top grossing concert film

(31:14):
of all time. That's Huage moneymaker.

Speaker 1 (31:17):
Yeah, okay, so I'm putting October third on my calendar
right now.

Speaker 4 (31:20):
It's sort of like an early Black Friday.

Speaker 8 (31:23):
It is, and it's sort of a rite of passage
for like any preteen you know, groupie.

Speaker 4 (31:30):
Oh yeah, my best friend's kids, go crazy.

Speaker 8 (31:33):
Mom to take you. Yeah at midnight, get to be
naughtyst day up till midnight and you know, get the
latest Taylor Swift whatever, and maybe even a snack.

Speaker 4 (31:41):
Well, okay, and looking ahead to stocks might be a vulable,
a volatile day today, Oh my gosh.

Speaker 6 (31:47):
Yep.

Speaker 8 (31:48):
Anybody hoping we could see a weakening economy that would
give the Fed carte blanche to cut interest rates against
and is having their world rocked right now. New reports
just out show weekly unemployment claims came in lower than
every single economists we asked expected. Also, second quarter personal
spending revised up to two and a half percent pace

(32:09):
from one point six. That's another stronger than seen read
on the economy, and GDP rose an annualized three point
eight percent quarter on quarter. This is a lot of numbers,
but just to put it in perspective, economists, we're expecting
a rise up to three point three percent.

Speaker 4 (32:26):
It came in at three point eight. So things are
looking a lot better than everybody thinks.

Speaker 8 (32:31):
Yeah, and in that perverse world of all street, that
means stock futures are pointing to a lower open daois
and pianistic futures they're all lower because everybody was hoping
for another interest rate cut from the Fed.

Speaker 4 (32:41):
This course, a little bit of ice water on that button.
You know, we'll see they are still pull it off.

Speaker 1 (32:46):
Denise Pellegrinny with Bloomberg getting in your business. We do
it every morning at five point forty. Thanks Denise. When
we come back, just one day left until I go
over the edge to raise money for the Union Rescue Mission.
The CEO of Union Rescue Mission. Marcode is going to
join us to tell us about the event and how
your money that you donate is actually going to help

(33:06):
homeless people find their way home.

Speaker 4 (33:08):
They're such a great organization. We hope you'll get behind us.

Speaker 1 (33:12):
If you want to make a donation right now, it's
RM dotrg slash ote for Over the Edge. We're doing
it tomorrow and we're talking to Marcoud Next. From your
Toyota Dealers Traffic center, find the Toyota Hybrid, sedan, truck
or SUV that's right for you at Toyota dot com
five point fifty three on your Thursday morning wake up call.

Speaker 4 (33:32):
Good morning, I'm Amy King. Thanks for getting your day
started with us.

Speaker 1 (33:35):
Here's what we're following in the KFI twenty four hour newsroom.
A girl with a striking resemblance to fifteen year old
Celeste Revas was spotted at one of singer David's concerts
last month. A video shared by TMZ shows the girl
at a concert in Silver Springs, Maryland, on August twenty fourth.
Revas's body was found in the singer's tesla about two

(33:56):
weeks later after it was impounded in Hollywood, a construction
crane is toppled near pch in Malibu. It happened around
ten thirty yesterday on Broadbeach Road. The crane operator was
injured suffered a leg injury. The road around the construction
accident was closed for a time yesterday. The Orange k
City Council's given the green light to several safety measures

(34:18):
for a traffic circle in the Old Town area. There
have been several crashes in the circle in the past
several years. The safety measures include additional ballards, boulders, nightly
street closures, and raised median islands. We're just minutes away
from a handle on the news this morning starts at
six oh five. Handles not here, but Neil Savadris sitting

(34:39):
in the main chair, got lots of news to cover
this morning, and something that we definitely need to cover
because we're just one day away, is our over the
Edge event for Union Rescue Mission. So let's say good
morning now to the CEO of Union Rescue Mission. It's Mark,
Good morning.

Speaker 3 (34:54):
Mark, good morning.

Speaker 1 (34:56):
How you doing Amy Getting nervous? Getting nervous?

Speaker 6 (35:02):
Nothing to be nervous about, perfectly safe. And you're a veteran,
you've done it before.

Speaker 4 (35:06):
It doesn't you know what I thought, because we did
it last year. I thought it would be really easy.
But you were with.

Speaker 1 (35:11):
Us when we went up to the roof of the
Los Angeles Universal City Hilton, right there along the one
to one freeway and looked over the edge, and those
feelings that pit in your stomach.

Speaker 4 (35:25):
I do not like heights, do not like heids.

Speaker 6 (35:29):
So it is a little intimidating, but it's also a
bucket list out them and for everybody out there that
has a little adventure in their spirit. Not only does
it give you a great story to tell your friends,
but in doing so, you're supporting a worthy cause and
helping people that are experiencing homelessness find their way home.

Speaker 1 (35:49):
Okay, so Mark, we know that we're repelling down twenty
five stories. We're raising money for the Union Rescue Mission,
and give us just a quick synopsis of what you
do at the Union Rescue Mission that is different from
what other organizations do, and how you're actually helping people,
which is why we support it.

Speaker 6 (36:10):
Of course, we pride ourselves and say and we're not
a shelter, we're a solution. We truly see it as
our mission to end homelessness for the people that walk
through our doors. So when they walk through our doors,
they're going to find more than a bed and three
hot meals. They're going to find free gental care, medical care,
mental health assistance, legal assistance. They're also going to have

(36:32):
a full time caseworker that's helping them in whatever condition
they came in. So there's a lot of faces to homelessness.
So whether they've experienced domestic violence, or they have addiction,
or they're just out of a job, we have people
that can address all those issues. We've been doing it
for one hundred and thirty five years. We're very good
at it. We put over one thousand people in permanent

(36:55):
housing last year, so we really do see ourselves. Our
mission is in homelessness for people that walk through our doors,
regardless of what condition they are when they walk through
those doors. Because again, there's a lot of faces to
what's causing homelessness in our country. And we meet people
where they are in a non judgmental way and poor

(37:19):
a lot of love and care on them and walk
that journey with them to get them back to a
better place in their life.

Speaker 1 (37:24):
Okay, and we know because we hear about it all
the time that all the money is being allocated for
homeless and we're spending billions of dollars, but you're not
getting any of that money.

Speaker 4 (37:33):
And so that's why what we're.

Speaker 1 (37:35):
Doing raising money going over the edge is so important
because you are privately funded.

Speaker 4 (37:40):
Can you explain why.

Speaker 6 (37:43):
Yeah, we are probably ninety eight percent privately funded, mainly
because we are a faith based organization. We're a safe
and sober living facility. We don't allow drugs and alcohol
in our facility. You have to maintain sobriety when you're
with us, because we very much are recovery program getting

(38:05):
people back to a better place, and we are the
only facility that welcomes in women and children or two
parent families, and we want to make sure that they're
in a safe environment that's conducive for healing whatever may
have gone wrong in their life. So we're never going
to compromise those values, Amy, I will Tay. I'm really
excited to say that there's a lot of government entities

(38:27):
out there that are now beginning to see us as
a real solution and missions like us as a solution.
So maybe that will change in time, but for the
time being, we're primarily ninety eight percent privately funded and
so thankful for the people in the Los Angeles area
and the surrounding area that support us each and every day.

(38:49):
We could not do what we do without the support
of the individuals out there that decide to partner with
us to try to make a difference.

Speaker 1 (38:56):
Okay, and we're going to ask you right now. We
would love it if you would donate whatever you can.
And we believe in this organization. That's why we're going
over the edge and would love to have you help us.

Speaker 4 (39:05):
And you can go to.

Speaker 1 (39:07):
You r M r M Union Rescue Mission dot org
and then slash ote for over the Edge, click on
the KFI team and you can donate to me, or
you can donate to Neil. I think Neil's beating me
right now, which is killing me. We'd love it if
anything you can spare, if you can donate it, and
then we're going over the edge tomorrow and I think

(39:30):
we're going at about noon tomorrow at the Hilton. If so,
if people want to come out, can they come out
and watch people repelling down the building?

Speaker 6 (39:39):
A few people can, it's because they have limited area.
If you've signed up to go the edge, that pretty
much fills up the pool area, but we have a
few VIP slots if they want to call into the
mission and try to get those. But for the most part,
if you're not signed up to go over the edge,
unfortunately you don't get to watch the event because we

(40:01):
have such a crowd around the pool watching people come
down that are signed up to go over the edge.

Speaker 1 (40:05):
Okay, but we will get and one of the things
that's very cool is if you go over the edge
and to do that, if you donate a one thousand dollars,
you can go over the edge, you get a cool
video of it, and then you can share it with
all your friends and say, dude, look what I did.

Speaker 4 (40:17):
So it's a super fun event.

Speaker 1 (40:19):
It's terrifying, but it's exhilarating and it's for such a
great cause. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow, Mark Hood,
CEO of Union Rescue Mission, thank you so much for
your time and hopefully we'll raise a lot more money
between now and tomorrow.

Speaker 6 (40:34):
Thank you, Amy, and look forward to seeing you and
Neil tomorrow.

Speaker 4 (40:37):
All right, thank you Mark. Good again.

Speaker 1 (40:39):
If you'd like to donate and help us go over
the edge raise money to do it again, go to
the team KFI page. You can donate to me or
you can donate to Neil and the address is rm
dot org slash ote and again anything you can donate,
we appreciate it a ton. This is KFI and KOSHD
