You're listening to KFI AM six fortywake Up Call with me Amy King on
demand on the iHeartRadio app KFI andKOSTHD two Los Angeles, Orange County.
It's time for your morning wake upcall. Here's Amy King. It's five
(00:30):
o'clock, straight up. Good Mondaymorning to you. This is your wake
up call for April fifteenth. I'mAmy King, and you know what it
is. If it's April fifteenth,it's texting. I know that in years
past, I've been very stressed becauseI hadn't I was scrambling at the last
minute to get my taxes done.I actually got them done early this year,
(00:51):
so that's that's a great, greatfeeling. But I totally get it
if you are freaking out and stressingout because you're working on your taxes.
Some restaurants are helping you cash ina little bit on tax Day. Will
tell you about some of the freebiesthat they're offering up for tax Day.
(01:11):
Also, remember I don't know abouta month or two ago, we talked
to the lady who wrote the DreamDictionary, Teresa Cheng, super nice lady,
and she wrote this whole book aboutwhat your dreams mean. And I
was like, I wish I couldtalk to her today because I had the
weirdest dreams last night, and alot of them were work related. Like
we were driving in an suv.I was with Steve Gregory and there were
(01:34):
water spout tornadoes coming at us andwe had to bail out of the car
and dive behind some rocks. Andthen I left the studio while Handel was
getting ready to do handle on thenews, and I went over to the
gym, which I never go togym's and went to do a little bit
of a workout and missed one ofmy breaks. I mean, it was
(01:56):
like the weirdest, weirdest things youhave, those dreams. I would love
to make sense of them. Idoubt those are in the dream dictionary,
but maybe I'll look when I gethome. Here's what's ahead on wake up
call. Busy day for you.A pilot and a dog have survived a
crash landing into the ocean waters offRancho Palace Alreadies. Officials say the pilot
and the dog swamed ashore after landinglate yesterday afternoon. Like Henning, Fire
(02:20):
and the Coast Guard are working torecover the plane. Not clear why the
pilot had to land in the water. World leaders are urging Israel not to
retaliate after Iran launched an attack involvinghundreds of drones, ballistic missiles and cruise
missiles. British Foreign Secretary David Cameronsays the UK does not support a retaliatory
strike, and French President Emmanuel Macronesaid Paris will try to convince Israel that
(02:45):
we must not respond by escalating. We're going to be talking with ABC's Jordana
Miller in Israel in just a fewminutes to get the latest from there.
That's in about fifteen minutes, andalso Steve Portnoy is going to be driving
joining us to let us know whetherthe attack is going to get Congress to
finally approve some funding for Israel.Jury selection starts today in the hush money
(03:07):
criminal trial of former President Trump inNew York. It's the first ever criminal
trial of a US commander in chieffor a former one. It's also the
first of Trump's four indictments that aregoing to trial. At six oh five,
It's handle on the news. LAPDhas increased patrols around religious sites because
of the drone strikes on Israel.Let's get started with some of the stories
(03:30):
coming out of the KFI twenty fourhour newsroom. Jury selection, as I
just mentioned, is starting in NewYork in the hush money case against former
President Trump. He's facing thirty fourcounts of falsifying business records for payments made
to porn actress Stormy Daniels during thetwenty sixteen presidential campaign. Trump has pleaded
not guilty. He says the storiesare false and has called the case a
(03:51):
sham designed to damage his current campaign. It's very unfair that I'm having a
trial there. It's very unfair thatwe have this judge who hates Trump.
Trump says the judge should have recusedhimself when reports came out that his daughter
is an executive at a pr companythat worked for President Biden. World leaders
have urged restraint as Israel considers itsresponse to a drone and missile attack by
(04:14):
Iran. Israel says nearly all ofthe weapons were shot down over the weekend,
including eighty drones and six ballistic missilestaken out by US forces. ABC's
Alison Kosik says Israel's war cabinet metyesterday without an apparent decision on what to
do next, one member saying Israelwould act in a manner and time that
is appropriate for US. Prime MinisterNetanyahu's war Cabinet is said to support retaliating
(04:40):
against Iran, but is divided overthe timing. US officials have emphasized Israel's
right to defend itself, but saythe US will not participate in any counter
strike. A person has been founddead on the sixty freeway in Almonte.
The body was found late last nighton the slow lane of the westbound side
near Rosemead Boulevard. See hpiece tryingto fee figure out how the person ended
(05:00):
up on the freeway. Scotti Schefflerhas a spare green jacket. Now the
world's number one golfer. Earned thatranking. He shot a final round four
hundred per sixty eight to win hissecond Master's tournament by four strokes. Tiger
Woods finished with his worst tournament scoreever, sixteen over par. He finished
in last place. It is fiveseven on your wake up call. Time
(05:25):
to say good morning to ABC's StevenPortnoy. So, Steven, the House
may finally take some action on gettingfunding to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan.
I will see, I mean, look the weekend barrage of missiles and drones
launched in Israel's direction certainly amps upthe pressure on the House to do what
the Senate did a couple of monthsago, which has passed a ninety five
(05:46):
billion dollar package of support not justfor Israel, but also, as you
mentioned, Taiwan and Ukraine. Nowthe question becomes, will Speaker Johnson put
that measure on the floor of theHouse or will he do something else to
abide by his late pledged to dosomething in support of Israel, or well
House Republicans when they conference later todaychoosing a different path. The easiest way
(06:08):
to get money to Israel now wouldbe to pass that ninety five billion dollar
foign aid package that the Senate passeda couple of months ago. You know,
that package was passed before Chuck Schumertook to the Senate floor and said
it's time for net Yahoo to goand it. You know, if the
House were to take up a differentmeasure for Israel, that would have to
go back to the Senate. There'sthe chance that some progressives in the Senate
(06:30):
might balk given the state of thewar in Gaza since the Senate acted last
So we'll see what happens. ButI will say that over the weekend,
while the barrage was still underway, the House Republican leadership pledged that the House
this week would take up legislation thatholds Iran accountable and supports Israel. Now,
(06:50):
the House has released seventeen bills thattarget Iran, but so far a
path for Israel support is not yetclear, okay, And so it's expected
that they're just going to move forwardwith the bill that basically they've been sitting
on. Well, we'll see.I don't know that they will because the
reason that they might not is,as you know, amy, the controversy
(07:14):
overfunding Ukraine. And late last weekbefore the Iran strike, Speaker Johnson visited
mar A Lago and stood with formerPresident Trump, who appeared to endorse the
House Speaker and the job he's doing. But Trump was asked about funding for
Ukraine and he said, well, maybe we ought to make it a loan
(07:34):
as opposed to a gift. Andthe provisions for additional sixty billion dollars support
for Ukraine and the Senate bill it'snot alone. So if Speaker Johnson's going
to move in that direction, he'sgoing to have to draft a new piece
of legislation that if it passes theHouse or then have to go to the
Senate, and it just there's therisk that it might go off the rails
again. I will just to reiteratean underscore. Since October seventh, the
(07:58):
Congress has not passed in addition pennyof support for Israel as far as I
know, other than the regular whateverannual appropriations measures that have become law.
There was an effort to get additionalsupport for Israel. It was a fourteen
billion dollar package that was requested bythe Biden administration after October seventh, and
it has not been delivered. Congresshas not lived up to that promise,
(08:20):
and it's because there hasn't been agreementas there needs to be in both houses
on the same pieces of legislation.Okay, so we're just going to have
to wait and see if he goesforward with the original one comes up with
a new one. But he didsay he wants to get to work on
it or have something this week.So hopefully he has said that and we'll
see what happens. But he's undera lot of pressure. Marjorie Taylor Green
(08:43):
is moving to oust him and threatenedto do so if he moves a Ukraine
bill on the floor. So it'she's in a hot seat. Well we'll
see if he can handle the heat. Thank you, Steven Portnoy. Have
a great day you got. Let'sget back to some of the stories coming
out of the KFI twenty four hournewsroom. A man arrested of shooting from
the roof of a building, andMarina del Rey has been arrested. LA
(09:05):
County Sheriff's deputies were called Saturday nightabout gun shots heard from inside an apartment
complex. Deputies heard shots when theyarrived and called for backup. They say
a man was spotted on the rooffiring off a rifle. He was arrested
a few hours later. Officials aresaying he fired off about one hundred rounds
at least and live streamed the eventon social media. LA has approved tens
(09:28):
of millions of dollars to settle aseries of lawsuits. A man who suffered
a serious head injury when part ofa street lamp fell on him will be
paid up to twenty one million dollars. Another man who was involved in a
car crash with an on duty LosAngeles police officer will receive up to fifteen
and a quarter million dollars. Acase involving an alleged defect in the crosswalk
at Santa Monica and Westwood Boulevards willsettle for one point nine million, and
(09:50):
a woman who tripped while rollerblading inVenice will be paid more than one point
three million dollars. The city councilapproved the settlements at its meeting on Friday.
Michael Bunks KFI News. So shetripped and fell and sued the city
and got one point three million dollarsmight have to go rollerblading in Venice.
O. J. Simpson is setto be cremated this week, and there
(10:13):
are no plans to donate his brainfor a CTE study. The executor of
Simpson's estate responded to the idea, saying that's a hard no. The degenerative
brain disease has been studied in formerfootball players and is associated with behavioral and
cognitive issues caused by repeated head injuries. It can only be diagnosed after death.
(10:33):
Simpson died from cancer last week.He was seventy six Police in Australia
trying to find out why a manwho went on a stabbing spree at a
shopping mall in Sydney was targeting women. Only one of the six people over
the weekend was a man. Twelvepeople survived. New South Wales State Police
Commissioner Karen Webbs's detectives plan to questionthe attacker's family to try to find his
(10:56):
motive. Police say they've ruled outterrorism and that the man had a history
of mental illness. He was killedby police. Also getting word out of
Sydney, Australia this morning that policehave arrested a man after he reportedly stabbed
a bishop and churchgoers in Sydney. There were no serious injuries on that one.
Fans will be seeing purple at theOlympics when athletes try to set records
(11:20):
at this summer's Paris Games. Ina move away from the traditional red brick
clay color on the track, Anew track is being installed for the twenty
twenty four Olympics in July, andit's purple. Work on the track is
underway. Three world records and twelveOlympic marks were set on the red brick
track in Tokyo. So health officialshave been telling us that measles is rearing
(11:46):
its ugly head again and we've gotanother one. Ella County health officials have
issued an exposure warning. They saythere was a traveler who had measles and
guess where he or she went UniversalStudios and the Santa Monica Pier and several
other locations. So this is basicallysome of the places where this person was
(12:09):
that if you're not vaccinated, youcould have been exposed. And the dates
are between March thirtieth and April first, So apparently the person went to Universal
Studios, looks like they stayed atthe Sheridan Gateway Hotel and also went to
the gym at the hotel, wentto Denny's on Century Boulevard, a Buca
(12:31):
Tobacco, Buca di Beppo, Klitus'sChicken Shack in Universal Studios, lard Lad
Donuts in Universal Studios, and Jenny'sSplendid Ice Creams. This person was hungry
Holy Cow, and then on Sundaywent to Jack in the Box, Santa
Monica Pier, El Tito, andthe hotel, and then on Monday went
(12:54):
to Denny's again and was at thehotel. And health officials are basically saying,
if you where at one of theexposure locations on those days. You
need to make sure that you've beenvaccinated against measles, and uh, it
looks like symptoms develop if you're exposedto be measles and going to get it.
Symptoms developed between one and three weeksafter exposure. So that's right about
(13:15):
now. So that person probably hada blast, right, sounds like they
went everywhere. A section of MalibuCanyon Road is closed in both directions because
of a rock slide. Several largerocks blocked the lane in front of a
tunnel between Payuma Road and pch TheOly County Sheriff's Department estimates the roads going
to be shut down until at leastthis afternoon. G seven leaders have unanimously
(13:39):
condemned what they called Iran's unprecedented attackagainst Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Natanyahu says
Israel will respond to the attack byIran at a time and a place of
its choosing. President Biden apparently toldNatanyahu the US will not take part in
any counter offensive against Iran. Thefuture of the NBA are DOUBLENBA will find
(14:01):
their new homes when the twenty twentyfour draft gets underway tonight. Iowa star
Caitlin Clark is expected to be thefirst overall pick. The Indiana Fever were
awarded the top pick after winning thedraft lottery in December. So Iowa's clerk
may just be going right next door. At six oh five, it's Handle
(14:22):
on the news. Are Iowa andIndiana? Do they touch? I know
they're close. At six oh five, it's Handled on the news. What
prosecutors need to prove to get aconviction in the Trump hush money case.
Right now, let's say good morningto ABC's Jordana Miller and Jornana. We've
got a lot to talk about withthe three hundred and fifty drones and missiles
(14:43):
being launched at Israel. But rightnow I want to hear from you,
as someone living in Jerusalem. Whathave the last couple of days been like?
Not so easy? I mean we'reused to kind of running, hearing
sirens, running to the safe.I think what made this and more of
a nail bier was that we knewseveral hours before any sirens went off that
(15:09):
there were dozens of cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and drones heading our way.
You know, looking back on Saturdaynight, we didn't know the number was
so high because the estimates had beenthat maybe around would fire somewhere between one
hundred and one hundred and fifty. You know, what came in or over
(15:31):
the skies was almost triple that number, right, It was close to three
hundred and fifty. And even thoughthe Israeli Army really tried to keep the
public calm, saying we have aerialdefense systems, you know, you know,
we have our allies, the UnitedStates here. You know, it
has to be said that Israel's Arrowtwo and Arrow of three which ended up,
(15:54):
you know, they were the heroesof the aerial defense systems. They
shot down almost all of the ballisticmissiles, the cruise missiles, and some
of the drones. The Israeli fighterpilots in the F thirty five and F
sixteen did most of the work withthe drones, but the AARO too and
Erasrowaly never had never been tested inreal time like that with so many targets
(16:17):
and so many you know, itwas a swarm. So I think there
was a lot of there was alot of tension if it would perform as
well, and it did. Itdid, and Israel and the United States
and the allies shot down almost everythingthat came towards Israel. Several ballistic missiles
hit around and on one Israeli basein the south, causing minor damage to
(16:45):
one aircraft that was there, butthat base remained operational. Its landings and
takeoff routes were not affected. Andthere were some rockets that fell in the
Dead Sea, for example, therewas a road in the north that was
injured, that was damaged, butnobody was killed, and sadly, the
(17:06):
only one person injured was a littleseven year old Arab Israeli girl from the
South who's still fighting for her lifein a hospital here. Okay, and
did the does it appear that Iranwas targeting specific things because they fell that
you said that one fell near abase? Were they was there a specific
(17:29):
target? Are they just Iran? No? Iran said that they were targeting
military sites and not civilian places, not population center. They said they did
that on purpose. Uh, youknow that the you know, and we
heard early intelligence from the Israelis thatthey they knew that these targets were on
(17:52):
their way to military sites. Butit looks like some of the ballistic missiles,
and Iran has old missiles, someof them never made it to their
to their intended targets. Some blewup on the way. I don't know
where the target. The Dead Sea, for example, is not. There's
not a military base right there,so that one seems to have you know,
(18:15):
gone off course. And here inJerusalem, by the way, sirens
went off and we saw, wesaw that missiles were were blown out of
the sky over the Israeli Parliament inJerusalems Old City, there was really the
whole sky lit up around the OldCity and the Dome of the Rock,
which is part of you know,Islam's third holyest site in the world.
(18:40):
That's where that's where the ALACs Mosqueis. That's right, that's right.
Interestingly enough, the Supreme Leader postedsome of the footage of the interceptions right
over the right over the Dome ofthe Rock, which is I find that
a bit strange. I mean, are on fired and put these holy sites
(19:03):
at risk. And then he postssomething saying, one day, you know,
these they will be in Muslim hands. By the way, the mosque
is, and in Muslim hands. The Jordanians run that mosque. Okay,
So you said that you could seethings happening over Israel or over Jerusalem.
So you guys weren't in shelters orwere you in shelters? But then looking
out kind of peeking. Oh,we saw the footage afterwards. Someone had
(19:30):
posted it on my note. Myfamily. We heard the sirens just before
two am, and I grabbed mychildren. We went to the safe room,
which I had packed with toys andother things, even though Jerusalem wasn't
supposed to be a target. Isaid, you know what, you always
have to in this in this partof the world, you always have to
plan for all contingencies. So wewent running in there, which was scary
(19:53):
for my three year old, andwe heard we heard probably ten interceptions at
least. We stayed in there forabout a half an hour, where I
was reporting from inside, you know, on our group with ABC News.
Yeah. Wow, that's just unnerving. Okay, so now let's move forward.
Israel is saying they're going to respond, and they're going to do it
(20:15):
in their way, in their time. The world is saying, right those
So I mean, like I thinkthe world is saying, mm hm,
go ahead. I think you know, I think President Biden is putting a
lot of pressure on the Prime Ministerand the Israeli leaders to not respond with
(20:38):
a large military strike on Iranian soil. I don't think President Biden is saying
don't respond, but he's saying,be smart, take your time, be
strategic right now, right now,you know his his remarks to the Prime
minister, or you know, basically, we've won one by defending against these
(21:03):
missiles, and in a really remarkableway, we won by helping you.
So do the Jordanians, the Egyptians, the Amaranths, you know, the
Saudis. Everyone rallied to Israel's cause. That is victory right now. Don't
rush into anything that will escalate theregion or bring us closer to war.
And I think what President Biden issaying is very, very strategically smart.
(21:29):
And I think Israel, while itdoesn't always listen to the president, as
we know, in this case,I think that the President's position will have
a huge impact on what Israel does. Maybe we'll see Israel carry out a
cyber attack, I mean a majorcyber attack, and that will be considered
less than you know, enough tomake a wrong respond. So we'll see.
(21:51):
Okay, Jordana Miller, thank youso much for providing us an update.
We're so glad you're safe, andeverybody in Israel is safe. Thank
God. All right, take care. We'll talk to you soon, Okay,
puck soon. Yes. The Dodgerstake on the Nationals tonight, with
the first pitch going out at seveno'clock. You can listen to the action
on AM five seventy LA Sports livefrom the Gallpin Motors Broadcast Booth, and
(22:14):
you can stream the game in HDon the iHeartRadio app keyword AM five seventy
LA Sports. It's a special nighttoo, because it's Jackie Robinson Day at
Dodger Stadium. President Biden has issueda disaster declaration for La Ventura, Santa
Barbara, and San Luis Obispo Countiesbecause of the winter storms. Residents affected
by flooding, landslides, mudslides, tornadoes, and other storm related issues between
(22:38):
January thirty first and February ninth areeligible for federal assistance. In February,
La County had hundreds of mud slidestriggered by days of heavy rain. Jerry's
selection gets underway this morning in NewYork. In former President Trump's hush money
case, Trump's lawyers tried several timesto get the trial delayed. Trump is
accused of falsifying business records to coverup a hush money payment to adult film
(23:02):
star Stormy Daniels ahead of the twentysixteen election. The IRS says it has
made customer service improvements since receiving tensof billions of dollars in new funding through
the Inflation Reduction Act. It saysit cut phone phone wait times, digitized
more documents, and improved it's where'smy refund tool? It's trying to get
the word out to show what's beenimproved as congressional Republicans threatened to cut the
(23:26):
additional funding the agency got. Atsix oh five, it's handle on the
news. Ojay's gone and no one'sgoing to go poking around inside his brain
to look for any answers. I'lltell you about that. At five point
fifty. The Weegle waggle walk isless than a week away. We're going
to be checking in with the PasadenaHumans Kevin McManus to get the latest on
that. But right now, let'ssay good morning to ABC's Jim Ryan.
(23:48):
It is tax day. Are yoursall done? Yeah? Done? Submitted,
refund came back. And that's thething I remember, you know,
standing outside covering back in the daywhen it was a big deal. At
midnight on April fifteenth, all thesepeople lined up at the post office to
get their returns submitted. The ones, invariably the ones who were waiting until
(24:11):
the last minute. The procrast tenureswere the people who owed money. Those
who were expecting or rayfound back hadfiled a long time before that. But
two things for all those folks withthe Muth's slide damage that they are likely
to file for extensions. If youhad a natural disaster, you can file
for an extension, right, yeah, we got those I think last year
for sure, everybody. Yeah, fire, yeah. And the other thing
(24:32):
is that the first part of thatSteve Martin joke here it is, he
starts off, he's there, No, I'm not correcting you, because that's
the second part that you told.He says, Okay, how to have
a million dollars and not pay taxeson it? First, get a million
dollars? Oh yeah, right,Oh my gosh, I love that one.
Yeah. So did you file withthis new direct file system there in
(24:55):
California is one of a dozen stateswhere it's available. I didn't because mine
are too complicated for the people whohave pretty straightforward, easy a tax on
baby. Huh yeah right, WellCalifornia, yeah, I know, you
have state income tax there, soyou have to file separately. There's cal
file tax application, then there's thenew direct file. And again California is
(25:18):
one of the guinea pig states adozen of them where this direct file has
been made available. It's supposed tobe easier. It's free to file online.
That way, you don't have toease a tax filing online service.
You can just do it yourself andsave some money that way. So,
yeah, this is tax deadline dayand the iris will receive millions more returns
(25:40):
today. They've already taken in overone hundred million as of earlier this month.
How many do they expect in totalwill file? What is the number,
two hundred and thirty something like that, two hundred and thirty million something
like that. It's a huge numberevery year, and of course it varies
because they don't know how many peoplefile for extensions. Form forty eight sixty
(26:02):
eight is the application for an extensionsix months. But again, Amy,
that doesn't give you an extension topay if you owed money. It's just
an extension to file the paperwork. So what you have to do is you
know, figure out what you madelast year. Go to the tax bracket
online the the IRS tax bracket estimatesure the amount. You oh, send
them a check for that amount, and then send the paperwork six months later.
(26:26):
But so you do need to sendsomething just to show that, Okay,
I know I owe
