The NBA’s sports gambling scandal continues to escalate as the league has now asked the Los Angeles Lakers and multiple other teams to turn over phones, documents, and internal records connected to the investigation into illegal sports betting.
This follows the arrests of Damon Jones, LeBron James’ former shooting coach.. along with Chauncey Billups and Terry Rozier for their alleged roles in illegal betting and underground poker games with possible mafia ties. While conspiracy theories online try to drag major stars like LeBron into the drama, there’s no indication top players are involved, and the NBA appears focused on cracking down quickly to protect the integrity of a season with ratings at an all-time high.
Across sports, the rise of legalized gambling has led to troubling fan behavior, from MLB players receiving Venmo threats to college athletes being harassed after missed plays, even a recent viral moment where a fan confronted Jimmy Butler on the street accusing him of “working for Vegas” over missed props.
