Episode Ten - Battle of Nemo - stars Boris Herrmann and Rosalin Kuiper from Leg 3 of the Southern Ocean during The Ocean Race 2023.
Listen along as Boris Herrmann and Rosalin Kuiper overlap on their watch on day 23 of leg 3 The Ocean Race. They are further from civilisation than almost any other human and they let us in to their private conversations, hopes, fears, the highs and lows.
The pair discuss the current weather and the sail setup they are using. The fleet coming together and being at the front of the pack, leading on Holcim. The discuss being ahead of the warm front and the grey wet weather outside. Plus the unusual situation of being so close to the other boats when battling towards Point Nemo.
Soon they will be in a low pressure all the way to Cape Horn with 50 knots of wind. They discuss the 11th Hour Mainsail repair and that they are happy the boat is back to fighting condition. They are happy and know the crew must be tired.
Boris discusses his light therapy glasses which he left behind. The level of happiness and his worries around the mast repair and pushing the boat with the full sails up.
They describe this as the calm before the storm - but Boris said he will worry less in the storm conditions - More worry now with the pulling on the mast in these conditions. Boris says this is such a strong boat - and he believes 100% in the boat.
They have gained in the last days and they think due to the sea state and that the rocker helps this.
Boris and Rosie then go on to discuss the fight around the climate crisis - trying to stay positive and how this is linked to the journey they do now. When you have adversity or things seem hopeless you come back fighting. The same for climate change - try to remain hopeful with this and also to communicate more about what we do and they explain how our ocean laboratory works and how our data goes into the IPCC reports on climate change.
