Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome everyone to the gear end edition of Bear Territory.
I'm Ken Rosenthal here with Alana Rizzo. Alana, it's been
an amazing year in baseball, amazing year for the Foul
Territory Network, and here we are ready to wrap it up.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Yeah, it's been so fun to be with you again
this season, Ken, thanks for all of that. Looking forward
to this offseason getting done so we can get into
twenty and twenty six. But let's go back for a moment, Ken,
and we're going to revisit some of your two thousan.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Yes, you did a good job. You did a good job.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
The top twelve story lines for the twenty twenty five
Major League Baseball season, A potential Dodger dynasty Hmmmmjan Soto's.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
Worth and more.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Let's start with the World Series champs, Ken, the Los
Angeles Dodgers.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Dynasty or not? What say you? They got another championship? Now?

Speaker 1 (00:50):
Well, yes, and you went back to back in this
day and age when it hadn't been done since nineteen
ninety eight to two thousand. Absolutely, however you want to
look at it, they are the dominant team in the sport.
And while I did say that they were well positioned
to do this. I didn't necessarily imagine the path that

(01:11):
they took, not just in the regular season when they
were often kind of a maddening team to watch, also
in the postseason, when, of course, they came within two
outs of losing the World Series, when it required a
series of crazy things happening in the final innings of
Game seven for them to win the World Series. But
all's well, that ends well, and at least that prediction

(01:33):
proved somewhat correct.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
All right, let me ask you this, then, Ken, considering
what you just mentioned, two outs away from losing the
World Series, considering how they got it done again, what
is it going to take to win a third consecutive title.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
That's a good question, a Lona, And obviously the offseason's
not over yet, we don't have a full understanding of
what their team is going to look like. They fortified
the bullpen clearly with the addition of Edwin Diaz, and
it seems to me the one thing that has been
of great benefit to the Dodgers over the last many
years is their ability to retain a hunger. Now, it's

(02:12):
difficult during the regular season, and we've seen them at
times not check out during the regular season, but not
be fully engaged, and sometimes the way they handle their
players with regard to injuries, they kind of slow play things.
We've all seen that. But what it will take is
good health first and foremost. And it's tough when you
come off a postseason as draining as that one was,

(02:34):
especially on your pitching staff. We saw the effects of
twenty four on twenty five with some of their relievers
last year. But if they have good health and they
get an injection of offense that maybe was going to
come from some unexpected place, maybe one of their young outfielders,
maybe from a player they pick.

Speaker 4 (02:51):
Up, that would help as well.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
Because some of their position players, Mookie Bets, Freddie Freeman,
they're getting older, they're still productive and Bo had a
bad year, but they're going to be good players. It's
just that the Dodgers probably need a little bit more
of a lift offensively.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
I think they still need another outfield er time. We'll
tell Ken if they get one. Obviously, the closer position
is secured with Edwin Diaz. Let's move our focus from
Edwin Diaz's former team, the New York Mess. I'm not
certain Ken, as we sit here a week before the
new year. What the heck they're doing? But I can
tell you Wan Soto's going to be there for a
long time. Not an overpay yet for you. He wrote

(03:29):
about it coming into this year.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Well, fifty one million a year is a lot of money,
and it's difficult for a player to exceed that in value,
and Juan Soto nearly did in his first year. And
his first year there were some rocky moments. He had
a difficult time early on, difficult transition. He seemed a
little bit out of sorts, and yet what happened in

(03:52):
the end. He finishes us with forty three home runs,
thirty eight stolen bases, a major league high one hundred
and twenty seven walks, a National league leading three ninety six.

Speaker 4 (04:02):
On base percentage. Pretty good year.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
Now, According to Fangrafs dollars metric, which translates war into
what a player is worth in a dollar form, he
was worth about forty six point four million, a little
bit short of fifty one. But certainly it was a
great year. No one would say otherwise. Even after that
rocky start. The question is one, can he be even better?

(04:27):
I don't know how much better he can be, but
better in year two, and perhaps he will be without
the transition to deal with and what kind of team
are the Mets going to put around him because the
Mets have lost Juan Soto's partner in crime from a
slugging perspective, Peter Alnso.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
Yeah, I mean, where do you go from here? If
you're the New York Mets?

Speaker 1 (04:47):
Really?

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Moreover, where do you go Ken? If you were one Soto?
He had a tremendous twenty twenty five. I think he
very much lived up to the contract going into it.
But next year, even more pressure on him considering the
core group is gone.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
That's a fair point, Alana, And I wouldn't say more
pressure just yet, because I assume they're going to put
some players around him besides Jorge Polanco, and maybe that'll
happen pretty soon. But the pressure of the transition is off.
The pressure of having that seven sixty five out there
in everyone's head, well, it's still going to be there,

(05:26):
but he seems to have adapted to it pretty well
in the second half, and I expect he's going to
be the one soda that we see year after year
after year.

Speaker 4 (05:34):
Once more.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
Everybody wants Ken Rosenthal to be a pontificator coming into
the season. Get that crystal ball out, Ken, what's going
to happen? You did a good job with the Dodgers.
You did a great job with Wan Soda. Let's talk
about the trade deadline. We thought it was gonna star
Sandy Alcontra of the Miami Marlins. Can you wrote all
Contra the Miami Marlins Ace soon will be a walking

(05:56):
trade rumor a transaction waiting to happen seven point two
two er before the break three thirty three, after he's
still in South Florida.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
What do you make of it?

Speaker 1 (06:06):
Well, I'm gonna give myself a little bit of a
break here, because when I write something like that, I
need a little bit of cooperation from the player. And
the first half he was still coming back from Tommy John.
He wasn't good, or at least wasn't as good as
he was in the second half. And he's still a
guy that ultimately could be traded. But they now intend

(06:28):
to compete this season.

Speaker 4 (06:29):
At least for the start of the season.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
They are a team that won seventy nine games, surprisingly
with him coming on in the second half and a
lot of other good things happening in their first year
under Clayton McCullough. So I'll take the hit for being
wrong about al Contra. I just thought he would be
better in the first half.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
I did too, but I also thought he was going
to get traded. I thought he was certainly going to
be on a different team heading into twenty twenty six. Really,
at the end of twenty twenty five, you also listed
Ken and many people did as well. Luise Robert still
in Chicago and Mike Trout He's still in a eight so
sorry about that.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
Well, Luis Robert should have been traded in my opinion,
I wrote that I was critical of the White Sox
for not doing it because then they had to pick
up his twenty million dollar option, which they did. They
are still trying to trade him and maybe they'll come
out better for it, and if they do, more power
to them. And I would have been wrong about that,
but I thought he should have been dealt. He didn't
have a great first half, and of course he did

(07:24):
spend some time on the IL, but was healthy at
the time of the deadline.

Speaker 4 (07:29):
Trout, it's just the.

Speaker 1 (07:30):
Contract, it's just his unwillingness to go and the fact
that he is not the player he was early twenty tens,
mid twenty tens. We haven't seen that guy in a while.
If we ever see him again or something close to that,
then the question will surface ornew about maybe Mike Trout
approving a trade.

Speaker 4 (07:49):
But he has really shown no willingness to do that.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
And you can look at that positively, you can look
at it negatively, but that's his feeling.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
He wants to win in Anaheim.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
As crazy as a proposition as that might seem.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Yeah, he seems very loyal to the Angels. Perhaps you
know it matters to him to stay there, considering they're
the ones that gave him two big deals. Are there
trade names ken that we should already be thinking about
for the twenty twenty sixth season. Who comes to mind?

Speaker 1 (08:16):
Oh, well, for the deadline. It's a little bit early
to look ahead, because we have so many guys right
now that we're thinking might get traded Ka tel Marte,
Freddie Peralta, Brendan Donovan.

Speaker 4 (08:27):
The list goes on, certainly the Twins.

Speaker 1 (08:30):
If they fall out of it. Now, they've kept Joe Ryan,
they've kept Pablo Lopez, and they've kept Byron Buckston at
least to this point. But if they fall out of
it again, Yes, I would expect that those guys would go,
and certainly any team that stumbles, those are the teams
you look to to perhaps make trades. A lot of
teams are trying to compete this year, so it's kind

(08:51):
of hard to predict which ones will stumble. But I
do expect that the Twins are going to be one
to watch as they've been all along, and then any
other team that might fall off. As I said, let's
say it's the Brewers and they keep per Alta and
they're not the team that they thought they would be
somehow in the first half, then he would become available.
That's just an example. I don't expect it to happen,

(09:13):
but that's the kind of thing I'm talking about.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
Ken, you mentioned the Twins, you mentioned the Brewers. Neither
one of those teams were in your top five of
teams that had the most pressure going into twenty twenty five.
I think your list was great and you were spot
on with a lot of them. If you look at
the list Ken was talking about coming into twenty twenty five,
the Cubs, the Blue Jays, Ken, the Mariners, the Orioles
and the Phillies.

Speaker 3 (09:35):
How do you think those clubs did well?

Speaker 1 (09:37):
The Blue Jays and Mariners did great, and the Blue
Jays surpassed all of my expectations. They entered the season
with their front office in trouble, maybe their manager in trouble,
all these questions about Vladimir Guerrero Junior. Was he going
to sign? He did early in the season, and then
they had really a year for the Ages. The Mariners
too came a long way, played in the Alcs, went

(09:59):
to seven games. The Ools had a lot of pressure
on them and were a huge disappointment. The Phillies had
a lot of pressure on them and had a good year,
but of course in the end we're disappointed by their
playoff exit. And the Cubs well, the Cubs just did
not ultimately get to where they wanted to be, though
they did too make the playoffs. When Tucker got hurt

(10:21):
in the second half, they really weren't the same after that,
and ultimately they fall out of the October picture earlier
than they wanted to.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
Well, ken some of those teams, there's a carryover in
euro opinion going into twenty twenty six. Who has the
most pressure coming into the new season.

Speaker 4 (10:37):
The two new York teams for sure.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
Now we sit here and their off seasons are not complete.
But the Mets, because they've deconstructed, they are under a
great deal of pressure. President Base Operations David Stearns under
a great deal of pressure to show that he is
capable of winning with this kind of payroll.

Speaker 4 (10:55):
He did it in Milwaukee, but he.

Speaker 1 (10:57):
Hasn't done it to the way that the Mets have
wanted so far in New York. They did reach the
NLCS in twenty four. It can't take that away from them,
but there's a lot of pressure there. There's always a
lot of pressure on the Yankees. They have not won
a World Series since two.

Speaker 4 (11:10):
Thousand and nine.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
We are all aware of that. Their owner house Dieinbrenner.
Will he spend enough to surround Aaron Judge with the
talent necessary while Aaron Judge is still in his prime.
That's a huge question in this game right now. The
Cubs pressure on them still because they are a team
that is in a division where they are the big spenders,
and yet they haven't really had that breakthrough success. I

(11:34):
would say the Oriols because of all they've done, they've
put together a better team than they did at this
time last year, but there's pressure on them to win.
Michaelias their general manager, clearly feeling it and responding to it,
and the Phillies again, how many times are they going
to run it back with this group before either they
win a championship, which they certainly looked capable of doing

(11:55):
last season, or they start to take pieces apart.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
Yeah, well, Kyle Schwerberg go going back to Citizens Bank
certainly helps. Of course, Pete A. Lonzo going to Baltimore
helps a lot. Baltimore certainly needs some pitching. However, all right,
your last chance of the twenty twenty five season to
ask Ken some questions. We'll be back right after this
with Grill and Ken. All right, time now for Grill

(12:21):
and Ken the last time this year, who were two
breakout candidates?

Speaker 3 (12:25):
Ken?

Speaker 2 (12:25):
In your opinion, we'll start with pitching first, and then
we'll go with the position player for twenty twenty six pitching, I'll.

Speaker 1 (12:34):
Go with Chase Burns and the Cincinnati Reds. Made his
debut last year and for me, was really impressive. Sixty
seven strikeouts in forty three and a third innings. He
had a HIGHRA four point five to seven, but his
FIP which is a better measure perhaps of what should
have happened under his control was only two point five four.

(12:54):
So he's a guy with great promise. I sort of
love the Reds rotation. It's young and there are more
come and that's going to be something to watch in
the early part of the season. From a hitting perspective,
I'll go with Owen Casey of the Cubs. It does
not appear the Cubs are going to resign Kyle Schwarber.
I'm sorry Kyle Tucker, and Owen Casey should get his chance.

(13:15):
He's a guy who has been a top prospect. He
has a great deal of promise, and he looks like
he could be the next great Cubs hitter.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
All right, so pay attention to the NL Central, the
Cincinnati Reds, and of course the Chicago Cubs. Okay, a
team on the rise in twenty twenty six, Ken, who
is it for you?

Speaker 4 (13:33):
I've got to go with Baltimore.

Speaker 1 (13:35):
And the reason for that, Alana is they finished last
last season in the ALE East. It was a horrible
year for them, incredibly disappointing. But they've made one move
after another this offseason. Andrew Kittridge and Ryan Helsley for
the bullpen, Taylor Ward and Pete Alonzo for the offense.
They still need to add starting pitching beyond Shane Baz.

(13:55):
That was a great trade that they made in my opinion.
So they have one more big move in my opinion,
and that's to get that extra starter or perhaps even
at top of the rotation starter. But they are a
team that should be better, and I do look for
them to be on the rise.

Speaker 3 (14:09):
I do too.

Speaker 2 (14:10):
I think, like you said earlier, Michael Layas kind of
felt the heat, the pressure, and he's making some moves
and responding to that hot seat. A team on the
downswing in twenty twenty six, and this may surprise some people.

Speaker 1 (14:22):
Well a lot, And this one's actually you're right, it's
surprising because of the name of the team, but it's
obvious based on the way they're conducting their off season.
It's the Saint Louis Cardinals. We've seen them trade Sonny Gray,
We've seen them trade Wilson Contreras.

Speaker 4 (14:35):
More to come. They are clearly in.

Speaker 1 (14:37):
Or rebuilding mode, and that's fine. It's probably overdue in
Saint Louis, and actually their fans are more likely to
embrace this than be disgusted by it because this was
coming and it was necessary. So that said, their performance
on the field in twenty twenty six cannot be expected
to be anywhere near what we've expected from the Cardinals

(14:58):
in the past, So sure I see them going down.

Speaker 2 (15:01):
They have one of the most understanding fan bases of
a team that has such a history. To your point, Ken,
all right, your favorite part of the World Baseball Classic?
Of course it is coming up in twenty twenty six.
Team USA is stacked. I love the World Baseball Classic.
What's your favorite part?

Speaker 1 (15:18):
My favorite part, Alana, is the sheer intensity and the
passion that the games are played with, not just by
the US team, which shows a lot of passion, but
the other teams from other countries. The last experience we
have with this in twenty twenty three was one of
my all time favorite things that I've covered, and that's
saying something. I've covered a lot of stuff, and it

(15:40):
just was so electric night after night. The games are incredible.
So I would just say the intensity, the passion, and
just everything that the WBC is, I'm all about it.

Speaker 2 (15:50):
I agree with you. It is one of the most
fun things we can cover. Ken, I had the opportunity
to do it live in twenty thirteen when I was
with MLB Network the first time, and I was in
Puerto Rico for the Puerto Rican Pool, and just the
teams in that pool. It was the Dominican, it was Venezuela,
it was Puerto Rico. It was just so much fun.
There's one team that I'm missing, but just the intensity,
to your point, is unbelievable. And as the years have

(16:12):
gone on, Ken, I think it's been more of a
goal and a prize for the USA players to want
to participate. I think it's always been a big deal
for the Latin players. It's always mattered to them, and
not that it hasn't mattered to the US players, but
I think now Mark de Rosa, your Dude of the
Week last week, has done such a great job of

(16:35):
wanting players to participate and making it something that is
more of a career a career goal too. Recently, Bryce
Harper said he's going to go back to play for
the USA, So I love it. All right, We're going
to come back and talk about our dudes and dorks
of the year. As twenty twenty five comes to a close.
Right after this, a few words from our friends at
foul Hey.

Speaker 5 (16:56):

game parlays. Gambling problem were concerned, there's help called one
eight hundred gambler.

Speaker 1 (17:32):
Dude, Dude, dude.

Speaker 2 (17:40):
All right, we've had fifty one of these so far. Ken,
it is the Dude and dork of the year. This
time we've had fifty two weeks in the year.

Speaker 3 (17:49):
Here it is. Let's start with your dude of the year.
Who is it?

Speaker 4 (17:53):
My dude of the year.

Speaker 1 (17:54):
This is something of a consolation prize for him, an
American League MVP, and a lot of people thought he
should have I was in the Aaron Judge Camp, But
my goodness, cal Raley had a season that we will
never forget. Sixty home runs in the regular season, most
ever by a catcher, most ever by a switch hitter,
five more in the postseason, four in the ALCS. All

(18:17):
this after playing one hundred and fifty nine games in
the regular season and every game the Mariners played in
the postseason. He had the third most starts at catcher.
He had an amazing season that really transcended the game
in certain ways. It was historic in many ways. So
cal Raley, I know you weren't American League MVP, but

(18:37):
you're my due to the year.

Speaker 2 (18:39):
Yeah, American League MVP Ken Rosenthal's due to the year.

Speaker 3 (18:44):
It is quite the consolation prize. And I tell you what, Okay,
do you.

Speaker 2 (18:51):
Have any honorable mentions perhaps of maybe some other dudes
that didn't quite make the cut for due to the
Year but were pretty close.

Speaker 1 (18:58):
Well, I'm going to lead right into your due to
these year, Alana, because my first thought here was Yoshinobu
Yamamoto for what he did in the playoffs in Game
six and seven, in particular in the World Series.

Speaker 4 (19:09):
That was the one guy I thought of.

Speaker 1 (19:10):
Aaron Judge of course would have been a logical candidate
as well shoo Tani every year. But I still say,
Raleigh and I think you need to talk about your
dudes of the year because that.

Speaker 4 (19:22):
Encompasses some of the people we were just mentioning.

Speaker 2 (19:25):
Can I just think it's so hard to do what
the Dodgers did. And I understand they have a ridiculous payroll.
I understand that the Los Angeles Dodgers are paying a
luxury tax that is more than several teams entire payroll.

Speaker 3 (19:35):
But the way that the Dodgers go.

Speaker 2 (19:36):
About their business and the way that they've been able
to understand that they are built for October and nobody
panics outside of the organization and to be able to repeat.
I mean, there is a lot of parody in baseball,
even if the payrolls aren't necessarily the same. And I've
said it time and time again, I will say this.

Speaker 3 (19:53):
As my last breath.

Speaker 2 (19:55):
Money guarantees good players, and money guarantees for the most part,
that you get into the postseason. Money does not guarantee championships.
And the way that Dave Roberts had to have a
revolving door of a bullpen that was absolutely decimated this
year with injury and obviously what happened to alex se
Messia granted super good starting staff and to your point
where yoshinob Yamamoto was able to do an iron horse

(20:17):
if you will, to take a you know, cal Ripken junior.

Speaker 3 (20:20):
But the Dodgers do it the right way.

Speaker 2 (20:23):
The Dodgers' ownership spends money, the Dodgers treat their players well,
and to be able to repeat, I think it is
pretty impressive. And they're trying to do it again for
the third time in a row, and I think that's
pretty cool. So they are my dudes of the Week. Okay, Ken,
Time now for our dork.

Speaker 3 (20:40):
Of the Year. I love this so much for you,
I think I've waited all year for this one.

Speaker 2 (20:52):
Who's your dork of the year. That's a pretty big
that's a pretty big category. A lot of people qualify.

Speaker 1 (20:56):
It's a big category, Alanna, and I don't take this lightly,
but we had a guy who was dork of the
Year several times during the season, and we had a
guy who did something in early May that was so
ridiculous that he has earned Dork of the Year. He
is part of the foul Territory Network. He is a
big part of the Foul network. Territory network, and.

Speaker 4 (21:19):
His name is Aj Prazinski.

Speaker 1 (21:21):
And why is he the dork of the year, you
may ask. Let's go back to May eighth. AJ was
doing a game somewhere I was doing a game somewhere else.
And what happened was he tweeted or not tweeted. He
texted us in a group text watch and learn kids,
enjoy your rain delay. At that point his game was on.

Speaker 4 (21:38):
My game was not. We were in a rain delay.

Speaker 1 (21:40):
I believe this was in Atlanta. Well, what happens minutes later?
AJ's game goes into a rain delay and you can
see my response. You beg for it, Aj, and the
baseball gods got you. That's the kind of conduct we've
come to expect from Aj Prizinski over the.

Speaker 4 (21:55):
Years, and he got nailed.

Speaker 1 (21:58):
AJ.

Speaker 4 (21:58):
Congratulations.

Speaker 1 (21:59):
I'm sure it's a big Yeah.

Speaker 2 (22:01):
It should be the Pretty Hall of Pretty Good too.
I think he's in that as well. So it's a
Dork of the Year for Ken Rosenthal and Hall of
Pretty Good Agent. You know, I sent him a text
the other day. I said, Hey, any of your UF
people have an Airbnb that I can I can rent
out next year? And all he said was like for
Morgan Wall And I said, yes, you think he ever.

Speaker 3 (22:19):
Got back to me? No he did not.

Speaker 2 (22:21):
He did not, All right, my my dork of the year.
It is the Angels franchise for a variety of reasons. Ken,
I mean, they have misstepped on so many different things,
but I think most recently in October a couple of
different things. When you you decide to not in October,
when you decide to sign a manager Kurt Suzuki to

(22:41):
a one year deal, I mean, what kind of what
kind of confidence do you think that says as far
as your commitment to him and how you think he's
going to do. And of course the GM also has
one year left Manasi, and so maybe they're tied together.
You say, Kakuchi saying the air conditioning didn't work all
year in the weight room.

Speaker 3 (22:58):
I don't care.

Speaker 2 (22:59):
You're a major leagu friend, you have a gazillion dollars,
but your AC doesn't work. And then the GM plays
the dumbest man ever as the Angels post a job
for HVAC help.

Speaker 3 (23:07):
I mean that's just one, you know, three, just three
quick examples that we can think of for the Angels,
and obviously wasting all that money on Anthony Rendon.

Speaker 2 (23:18):
There's a lot of there's a lot of things that
I can think of, but the Angels, you guys are
my dorks of the year. Let's get it together, Anaheim,
let's get it too together.

Speaker 4 (23:29):
Well, actually it might happen.

Speaker 1 (23:31):
I don't know when it's going to happen, and maybe
it won't happen until there's a new owner, because Arty
Moreno is the root of a.

Speaker 4 (23:37):
Lot of these problems.

Speaker 1 (23:38):
And on a heck, we should mention too, the whole
Tyler Skaggs trial and everything that happened there in the
settlement at the end, and everything that we learned about
the Angels through that process. It's a whole different thing.
It's a tragedy. It's well different than baseball, but it
is too something that was marking the Angels twenty twenty five.

(23:58):
So the Angel yep, their dorks of the year. Aj Prazinski,
You're my dork of the year. I love you, brother,
but you're still the dork of the year.

Speaker 2 (24:08):
We are thankful to you guys for being here. You
are all our dudes and dudets of the year. Thank
you for watching and listening all your long Fair territory
returns on Monday, January fifth, at ten am Eastern. Enjoy
the rest of the holidays, have a very happy new year.
We are on to two thousand and twenty six. Can
have a good one

Speaker 4 (24:28):
