Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to the Fear and Greed Business News Afternoon Report
for Tuesday, the fourteenth of October twenty twenty five. Are
Michael Thompson. Every afternoon, we've got the five stories that
happen today that you need to know about. Let's get
cracking with story number one. The S and p ASX
two hundred closed zero point two percent higher today to
eighty nine hundred points with the miners doing a lot
of the heavy lifting across really gold, silver, end iron
(00:26):
or let's start with gold though. The big day for
miners of the precious metal hit yet another record today.
It just seems to keep doing that right above four
one hundred US dollars and ounce. Neumont climbed four point
five percent, Northern Star almost three percent, Evolution nearly two percent.
I could just keep going. The list is very long,
but perhaps even more exciting today as a silver miners,
(00:49):
silver mines and suns, silver Andy and silver Unico silver,
all of them were up between six point five and
seven point three percent today, the price of silver hitting
a record high as well, just quickly. A couple of
the losers today, which doesn't actually sound very nice, but
the ones that lost ground the big four banks, the
big insurers IAG, Suncorp and QBE. Retailers like Wes Farmers
(01:13):
and JB Hi Fi closed lower today on the back
of weaker consumer confidence, and that was according to the
latest an Z Roy Morgan survey. On to story number two.
Now and the phone numbers of some of Australia's most
high profile politicians, including Prime Minister Anthony Alberanezi and Opposition
leader Susan Lee, have been published online by a US
based website that scrapes and compiles personal data using artificial intelligence.
(01:38):
The government has directed security agencies to investigate after the details,
which apparently include phone numbers and email addresses and some
other bits and pieces, were made publicly available. The website
claims the data is sourced from publicly available profiles and
offers an opt out option. Though some numbers apparently are inaccurate,
it does go well beyond just Australian politicians. There are
(01:58):
global figures included in this leak. We'll have a bit
more on that one tomorrow morning. Story number three. Virgin
Australia is cutting economy passengers carry on allowance as part
of a push to improve boarding times and streamline operations.
Under the changes, passengers will be allowed just a single
bag weighing up to eight kilograms, plus a small personal item.
(02:20):
The new rules come in to effect on the second
of February next year, replacing the current policy allowing two
bags with a combined weight of seven kilograms. Virgin says
the move is based on customer and staff feedback that
it's going to simplify the boarding process and deliver a
more consistent experience, basically by the sounds where people just
get sick of waiting for you to jam something that's
(02:41):
too big or too many bags into the overhead compartments.
Premium passengers and Elite Velocity members do not worry, though,
you will still be allowed two bags weighing a combined
fourteen kilograms. The new policy also applies apparently to short
haul international flights. Story number four nine Radio has posted
a strong recovery and the latest radio ratings out today,
(03:02):
just weeks after confirming that it was exploring a sale
of its talkback stations. Flagship Sydney station two GB recorded
gains across all key timeslots, led by Ben Fordham's Breakfast Show,
reclaiming the top spot from Kyle Sandalans and Jackie Oh,
the Kiss FM duo slipped back to thirteen point six percent,
(03:22):
still a strong result. Novas Fitzi Whipper and Kate Richie
were third with eight point six percent. Morning host on
two GB Mark Levy surge back to number one, a
three point four point lift to fourteen point nine percent.
In Melbourne, the nine Powerhouse three AW strengthened its lead,
with breakfast hosts Ross Stevenson and Russell Holcroft rising to
(03:44):
a twenty point three percent share. It is a behemoth
of a show that one. In Brisbane, though four BC's
Breakfast Show fell to a record low of three point
six percent, and Perth six PR suffered its weakest result
in over a decade, so very much a mixed res
ZLT for nine radio stations. There some better news meanwhile
for ABC Radio stations, recording gains in Sydney and Melbourne
(04:08):
after some pretty lackluster results over quite a long period
of time. Finally, story number five, US President Donald Trump
has returned to Washington after a lightning visit to Israel
and Egypt, where he signed a peace agreement alongside other
world leaders. The role of the President in negotiating the
Gaza ceasefire deal has been well really widely praised, including
by former US President Bill Clinton. All twenty Israeli hostages
(04:32):
released by HERMAS as part of the deal have now
been reunited with their families, though many are suffering from
health complications. After more than two years in captivity, the
Red Cross says it has overseen the return of more
than eighteen hundred Palestinian detainees to Gaza and the West Bank.
The bodies of four Israeli hostages have been recovered for identification,
(04:53):
while HERMAS still holds the remains of twenty four more.
And that's it for the afternoon Report for Tuesday, fourteenth
