Carl IV av Norge (Carl XV av Sverige, 1859–1872) var kronprinsen som skulle føre Bernadotte-dynastiet inn i fremtiden. Han var nummer én i arverekken etter sin far, Oscar I, og ble ansett som den perfekte "gallionsfiguren" for å bygge opp dynastifølelsen i Norge.
I denne episoden av Historier som endret Norge dykker vi inn i kronprins Carls mest formative år. Han var tilhenger av en styrende kongemakt og promoterte en ambisiøs dynastisk skandinavisme – drømmen om å samle Norge, Sverige og Danmark under én krone.
Som visekonge av Norge i 1856 reiste den folkelige "Kron-Kalle" landet rundt i et forsøk på å knytte bånd til nordmennene. Reisene hans var turbulente; de inkluderte alt fra militærinspeksjoner på Gardermoen til "hygge med piker, vin og sang i Ullensvang". Samtidig demonstrerte Kalle sine Machiavelliske trekk, da han mente en statsmann måtte "tale med splittet tunge".
Imidlertid ble Carls regjeringstid som kronprins tragisk definert av tapet av hans sønn, Carl Oscar ("Lill-Drotten"), i 1854. Dette, kombinert med hans kone Louises påfølgende infertilitet, gjorde hans linje til en "biologisk blindvei" for dynastiet.
