I år er det 200 åssiden den store utvandringen til Amerika startet. Reisen som startet 4. juli 1825 ble starten på den største blodtappingen av nasjonen vi hadde sett siden svartedøden.
Man sier at på drøyt 100 år emigrerte 900 000 nordmenn til USA. I denne episoden får vi høre om utvandringen til frihetens land, hvordan nordmennene som nådde det forjette land egentlig hadde det og hvem som betalte prisen for den Amerikanske drømmen.
Nasjonalbibloteket har åpnet utstillingen «Rett vest. Drømmen om et bedre liv i Amerika», som gir en oversikt over norsk utvandring til USA fra 1825 til 1930, med fokus på drømmen om et bedre liv og de utfordringene og virkelighetene utvandrerne møtte. To av de som står bak utstillingen er på besøk: Henrik Mathisen, fagansvarlig og Marte-Kine Sandengen ansvarlig for utstillingen.
