(00:03):
Yay Networks. I am in charge. You are as the Alpha. This
is only funny because Shane is sonot the Alphai. People who would just
take out of context would be like, what, it's really rude. But
there's some people out there. Theywere like, yeah, hey, is
that he's the night Hey g le s egos and they's yetting Vetter and

(00:38):
vetter at the Egos chant. Wehad it out in full force yesterday.
We celebrated in the first wind ofthe season of my beloved Philadelphia Egos.
Wow, and I wore an EaglesT shirt. You did Rich made May
fall more and more in love withyou. I went to buy a sweatshirt
last night, but they're sold outin the big sizes. Oh no,

(01:00):
like, yeah, they the Abercrombiehad they have the all the sports teams
that was going to buy the Eaglesto be episode is not about sports,
everyone, don't worry. No,it's not and not at all. I
would not sign up for that.I'm just letting Shane know that I tried
to buy an Eagle sweatshirt that Ihad seen, but it's like I could
get a medium, I think,But I appreciate the effort. Yeah,

(01:21):
me, being like I would have, but I didn't. Well, you
have a T shirt and as longas you wear that every game day,
oh and spending in a few nongame days, so most days most for
the next six months, I'll befine. All right. We have a
few life updates we do, thefirst of which is that we are delaying
our trip to Los Angeles. Weare I don't know if we'd like specifically

(01:46):
said that we're spending some time thisfall in Los Angeles. I think we
did say that at some point, but we were supposed to leave September first.
In our minds, that was ourday. Yes, but as has
been the case all year, itfeels like IVF. Yeah, it's once
again message up our plans and yeah, and it's not even like it doesn't

(02:07):
matter what the specifics are, butyeah, we basically have to push it.
So now we pushed it to Octoberfirst, and we're doing another sheet
an analysis. Yeah for me,because she remember my numbers you're at yeah,
and this is like my six orseventh sheat an analysis. Yeah.

(02:28):
At this I'm beginning to ry thatthe people you're like facilitate you're not in
the lab, are like wondering whyI'm there so often. Well, they
sure do feel bad for you.Is this part of his treatment? Is
she doing this for fun? Like? Who is this man? Now?
They all know us and they wishedus at every time they're like, we're

(02:51):
rooting. Yeah, we're so nice. It's really like where we go is
a really nice place, but we'renot talking about that today. That's just
one life update. That's one reasonwhy we're delayed. I did a kind
of versity out for the best becauseyes, your parents, listen, George
are in Poland. They are George'sfirst big trip in a while. My

(03:15):
dad hasn't been there since we livedthere when I was like two. Yeah,
and I was always to back.Yeah, he's wanted to go back.
He's not biging to travel though. He doesn't like to fly, he
doesn't like to do long drives. He likes to be home. But he
kept saying that he wanted to go, and so my mom was like,
if I book a plane ticket, you're you're gonna have to actually get on

(03:37):
the plane. So this has beenlike in the ch for a long time.
Yes, And as he's been gettingthere, we're all kind of like
kidding with George, like you jumpedback out you stud down. Yeah,
I mean you don't love traveling andall of that to say for that,
Like with that in mind, Yeah, they had maybe the most annoy am

(03:59):
beginning to we dropped them off atthe airport for their flight, which was
at like three fifty I think threefifty pm. We dropped them off like
one thirty. About fifteen minutes afterwe dropped them off, and they get
a notification that their flight has beendelayed by an hour. Bummer, But
that's okay, Like go to arestaurant, it's fine as they're there,

(04:21):
you know, they're there another hour. The flight gets delayed another hour.
That's a little concerning because now therethey had a layover. It's it's close
to missing their next flight, whichactually takes them to Poland. They had
a layover I think in like Newark. Uh, they are waiting around,
waiting around. We finally get atext. It kept getting bumped like fifteen

(04:42):
minutes. Finally the flight was justcanceled all together SMA. After they sat
in the airport all day, allday long, waiting waiting, waiting for
their flight, and then it wascanceled and they waited in line to like
talk to a representative of the airlineto figure out what to do, and
the people in front of them werebeing booked on flights like three days later.
My parents were like, no,like, that's that's half of our

(05:04):
trip, Like we have to youknow, like we need to be there
now, we have all this stuffbooked. I'm sure it tripped it so
far. Yes, if you losea few days, you're really tuned into
lights. I know your jet ladperiod, you know, just you really
lose a lot if you miss afew days. Yes. So finally they
got rebooked just the next day, which was great, on a very similar

(05:26):
flight. So they went there tothe airport for the second time. We
dropped them off and this time theflight went. So they arrived yesterday.
They are in Poland they're having agreat time. They are didn't delicious fear
day. Am very jealous. SoI'm so, I'm just really jealous that
they're there in general, but theydid it, and George did it.
YEP, props to George. Yeah, so I'm just jealous. I know

(05:49):
they're light, I know, butwe're holding down the fort here at home,
so don't worry. I'm the manof the house. Now, Okay,
it's a weird thing to say Iam in charge you No, you
are as the alpha. This isonly funny because Shane is so not the
Alphai. People who would just takethat out of context would be like,

(06:10):
what, he's really rude. Butthere's some people out there Shane. They
were like, yeah, it's true. That is not Shane, though.
I think Chloe is in charge,in charge, and she's checking the perimeter
of the home. She's waiting forher grandparents to come back, checking their
bedrooms, and we're just kind ofhere to support her. We are we

(06:32):
are working. Yeah, and nowthere's our third life update. We have
finished the manuscript for our books andturned it into our editors. Yeah,
I mean we're almost done. Wehave to add in the chapter too,
so I don't like to say thatwe're done, but we did turn in

(06:53):
like ninety nine percent of the bookto our editor. It is out of
our hands and the whole edited now, yeah, the whole edited phase is
gonna be a whole another giant youknow, it's them. But for right
now, yea, our first draftis essentially done. Yes, and we
feel very good after versually on thatfor three four years. Yes, it's
been a broad jet way too long, but we thought to celebrate the end

(07:20):
of our first draft, we wouldspend the rest of the episode reading for
you one of our favorite chapters thatwill be in this book. Yeah,
it is a sada of an experiencethe hand and I had, you know
what, let's take your ray, didn't a will the end of it.

(07:41):
It is your mayhem to itchy.Yes, so we will take you right
and we'll be right back. Lastyear I switched health insurance plans and companies
because of us beginning the whole IVFprocess. That was a really fun just
d know, not stressful at all. Yeah, I mean, health insurance
is so fun fun, But findingnew doctors that take your new health insurance

(08:05):
plan is always such a pain inthe butt because you want to click with
them and get along with them. You want them to be available and they
have to take this insurance plan andis not easy. But dot makes it
very very easy. Yes. Zocdoc is a free app where you can
find amazing doctors and book appointments online. We're talking about booking appointments with thousands

(08:48):
needs to find a doctor or aspecialist, this is hands down what we'll

slash junkyard and download the zoc docapp for free. Then mind in book
a top rated doctor today. That'sZocDoc dot com slash junkyard zoc doc dot
com slash junkyard. Okay, weare back. I have the chapter here

(09:11):
on my phone ready to be read. You are in for a treat.
Those of you who have heard ourepisodes before, you know that Hannah has
a reading voice that will not yoursoots off. Oh, I feel like
you're sending it up way too high. She isn't that reading voice. I
don't know. So I might fallasleep just from the soothing made sure of

(09:35):
her voice, But this chapter shouldnot put you to sleep. No,
this is it starts off strong. It's written from my perspective, right,
Hannah and I, as we didwith all the chapters, wrote it together.
There, Yes, so shall webegin. Let's be again. I
believe the title of this chapter isgoing to be the European But this is

(09:58):
about so much more than the groping. The grouping is just a detail.
I think the alternative, tell y'allis evilism in New York City. That's
boring. We'll work on it,guys. Okay, it was a passionate
group yet somehow gentle and reassuring. Her silky fingertips traced the curves of my

(10:18):
iron jaw line, dancing along likewhimsical fairy Ballerina's iron jaw line. Shameka,
I am. The stubble of mybeard bristled as her hand concluded its
sensual journey down my face. Forthe briefest moment, entranced by the tenderness
of her palm and the softness ofher cooing, what a nice boy,

(10:39):
Such a lovely nice boy, Iforgot where I was and what was happening.
My ecstasy quickly vanished as I snappedback to reality. I was in
the middle of an airport lounge, waiting in line for the beer machine.
With Hannah and her mom, who, along with dozens of other travelers,
were staring at me with faces ofsheer horror as one of the airline employees
stroked my face and called me anice boy. It all happened so fast.

(11:03):
Before I could even process the embarrassment, I blurted out, I'm a
man. I'm twenty seven, butthe offender was already moving towards the buffet
to continue refilling a pot of lentilsoup. Do you remember pause? Do
you remember me going I'm a man? Did you actually think? I don't
remember that. I mean I rememberthe groping very very vividly. I didn't

(11:26):
have said it, more like I'ma man. Yeah, I don't.
I don't think you yelled I'm aman. I think you were terrified.
I whimpered I'm a man. I'ma man. I'm not a baby.
But she stroked in my face literallyhere imitate for people that are watching on
YouTube, rubbing me, going ohsweet boy, yeah, like like you

(11:52):
know, like someone's thinking, youknow how you like rub your chin,
but like if you do it tosomeone else again and again, Okay,
let's keep going. I looked atHannah and Liz with wide eyes. They
both had their hands over their mouths, probably in an effort to hide both
laughter and much angrier outbursts. Fromthe very beginning of our relationship, Hannah

(12:13):
and I have often dealt with blatantableism when we're out in public together.
People address Hannah when meaning to addressme. What does he want to eat?
People pray over me with no regardfor my personal space or autonomy,
let alone the fact that maybe Idon't want to be healed by their deity
of choice. People ask if weare siblings or if she is the one
taking care of him. It happensa lot, and it stems from a

(12:35):
severe lack of experience and understanding ofdisability. But this instance in the airport
had to take the cake for themost infantilizing of them all. Holy shit,
said Hannah, how do you filea grievance with the Department of Justice?
What kind of beer does the lovelynice boy want? Joked Liz,
holding out an empty glass and gesturingto the beer tap. For the rest
of that day, you and yourmom referred to me as the lovely nice

(12:58):
boy everything baby boy. These encounterswere not rare for us or for anyone
with a disability, so we wereable to brush them off fairly easily.
Little did we know this was justthe tip of an ableism iceberg, and
our ship was barreling towards it.Tant reference for you. Yeah, soon

(13:20):
we were in for quite a trip, Shane. The purpose of our excursion
was actually quite exciting. A largeinternational clothing retailer had invited Hannah and I
to New York City to model foran advertising campaign Abercrombie. If anyone's wondering,
Oh, they did not give thatdetail. It's fine, I can
take it out. They didn't doanything at all. Yeah, it's funny

(13:45):
just because I mentioned Abercrombie earlier inthis up. You did right, Abrambi
heavy it's aber hobby. As you'llhear, you did nothing at all.
You didn't do this, Abercrombie. You were great, all right. So
we were modeling for an advertising campaign. Their invitation was another one of those
are we dreaming moments that speckled therise of our YouTube channel. The stories
of ableism and discriminatory inaccessibility that you'reabout to read are in no way or

(14:09):
reflection of this brand or its employees. Working with them was fantastic and their
team had very little to no controlover the situations that arose. And we
aren't just saying that because they paidus to wear their clothing. Minutes later,
while enjoying the lounge and waiting forour flight to arrive, a member
of the airline's administration approached us.She apologized, do you actually remember,

(14:30):
Shane, there was another employee thatsaw it happen. Yeah, I do
remember. That's why this person foundout. Yeah, And like she went
and got a supervisor. It wasvery more humfortable than we share. Yeah,
and we were just trying to getthrough this story in our chapter.
It was a whole She brought thegroper, they were apologized. We were
like, no, no, notreally, it's fine. Anyway. She

(14:54):
apologized for the groping and assured usthat the groper would undergo disability awareness training
to learn why her actions were inappropriate. Do not drug, don't touch people.
We thanked them for handling this situationwith the gravity it deserved. Our
trip to New York City was aquick one, less than two full days,
but in the forty something hours weexperienced so many moments of disability related

(15:18):
stigma and inaccessibility that we can organizethe recap of this trip around able US
occurrences alone. Buckle up. Dayone, one thirty five pm, the
group happens, and that really justset up everything that was about to count.
Day one, four forty seven pmwe landed at LaGuardia with our excitement

(15:39):
soaring. The view of the NewYork City skyline from the airplane window filled
us with anticipation for what was arguablygoing to be one of the most prominent
partnerships we'd ever taken part in.This was a legit modeling deal, and
it felt like the hours of hardwork that we poured into our YouTube channel
we're beginning to pay off. Withthis ad campaign, we'd be bringing the
authentic story of disability to a hugenational level. Unfortunately, our starry eyed

(16:03):
vision of cruising into the city andstyle would need to wait. My wheelchair
was missing. The airplane deboarded itspassenger as while the three of us waited
in our seats. This was standard. Once the ground's crew brought my chair
up from the underbelly of the plane, Liz would exit to reassemble all the
fragile parts that we removed for safety. All airlines are notoriously bad at keeping

(16:23):
wheelchairs intact, so we take itupon ourselves to disassemble as much as possible
lest we arrive at a location andfind my wheelchair in pieces, which happens
to disabled travelers thousands of times eachyear. Once Liz completes her portion of
the mission, Hannah unstraps me frommy customized car seat contraption that I need
to sit comfortably in an airline chair. She carries me like a sack of

(16:45):
potatoes down the length of the airplane, bopping my head on the rows of
seats, both by accident and onpurpose to be funny, and the hold
right down the aisle. I'm goingit's all about the feet. She puts
me back in my wheelchair and wefinished the reassembly around my body at the
door of the plane. When thedeep plane Shane process goes smoothly, it
takes about twenty to twenty five extraminutes from the time the airplane is completely

(17:08):
empty. When complicating factors arise, like say I'm missing wheelchair, there's no
telling how long it might take, and you are doing a lovely jabb reading,
I have to say, would youlike do you read it? Or
is your voice I can do youwant to read? I don't mind reading
because I'm fine, but I canread. I can read read from you

(17:29):
can set it on my life. You don't have to hold it. Really,
I can hold it. Really,You're obviously get tires. You're not
reading for that long. Your mouthwill give out before my arm. An
airline employee came to our seats onthe plane after the rest of the passengers
said yes, it did give usholding out hoopboard. We are having some
trouble located to your wheelchair, mischievoHaw. Nothing to worry about. I'm
positive it will turn up. Hespoke, as if my l chair it

(17:52):
was a loose tree chair that wasstampering around the airport, evading all employees.
Yeah. The three of us worefaces of shot. That seemed to
be a development theme. We ratedfive minutes, ten minutes, thirty minutes
the flight. Attendance on Berberg graveshifts and extremely apologetic throughout the air ideal.

(18:14):
It wasn't their fault in the slightest, but it was kind of them
to hang around and chat with uswhile we rade it anxiously. After an
hour, we ever heard your radiomessage near the front of the airplane.
MYBM share had been found at thewrong terminal, and it was on its
way up to the door now fiveDay one, seven ten pm. A

(18:37):
waitress at the pizza joint we foundin Brooklyn leaned over me and asked,
with painfully slow annunciation, as ifaddressing a toddler, are you enjoying New
York City? Big guy? Daytwo? I didn't really should pause here,
ya, braids dare wholesome salt ware. Oh, I don't need to

(18:57):
do that. Clear our longs?Huh? Do you? If you?
And I will be back with therest too. It gets ten times more
ridiculous from here, so we'll beright back. You guys know that we
both love skims Shane and I.What are you wearing today? Skims Shane?

(19:17):
Duh, duh? And the brimwearing is from the Fits Everybody collection,

Select podcast in the survey, andbe sure to select our show in the
dropdown menu that follows. All right, We're back and it is day two,
nine thirty am. The timeline forthe photoshoot was extremely stringent. We'd
been briefed by the brand ahead oftime that arriving at ten am sharp was

(20:45):
crucial. Our plan was to callan accessible taxi for transportation to and from
the photo shoot, but just toplay it safe, we booked the closest
hotel possible, which was still athirty minute walk from the refurbished warehouse that
they'd chosen for the location the nightbefore. Or we had called an accessible
taxi service and ordered a car fromnine thirty am. That's just funny because
it was like a five minute driveand we were like, we'll give it

(21:07):
thirty minutes. We were like, just yeah. The weather forecast for photoshoot
day was a balmy thirty seven degreesfahrenheit with heavy rain expected. Hannah and
I left our hotel after the taxiservice called to say they were out front.
The nerves from our upcoming modeling debut, added with the fact that a
nice drizzle was already coming down outside, coupled with the precise arrival requirements,

(21:30):
had both of us in a stateof mild panic. Like the stress and
I stress out about arriving to recreationalactivities. Yeh on time. I know.
This was like a hard you mustbe there at can yeah or the
days of ruins or you will notbe in this campaign, and we,

(21:52):
like my chiefs, all those offthe grace. Ye. The mildness of
that panic blossomed into panic a plentyas we stepped outside and saw exactly zero
wheelchair accessible vehicles waiting for us inthe rain. Instead, we saw a
standard sedan and its driver, whowas beckoning us in his direction, mister
Shawn Burkaw, He asked, yes, I said, looking down at my

(22:15):
phone to see the time changed tonine thirty five. Am, I am
your driver? Where are we headedtoday? We ordered a wheelchair taxi,
I said, yes. He hoppedout of his car and popped open the
trunk. I will put it inhere, he mimicked a lifting motion.
My chair weighs four hundred pounds andit doesn't fold, so it won't fit
in there anyway, I said, becoming exasperated. I could feel the minutes

(22:38):
taking past. Do you have anyvehicles with ramps? The dispatch office assured
me the car would be wheelchair accessible. Yes, I will put your wheelchair
in here. See again, hepointed to the tiny trunk. We told
him it wasn't going to work, and went back inside the hotel to consider
our options. A helpful employee atthe front desk immediately got on the phone
with several more companies claim to havewheelchair accessible vehicles. The earliest available pickup

(23:03):
was in an hour, much toolate for our scheduled arrival. We talked
it over and decided there was nochoice but to walk run. Actually,
as we now only had about twentyminutes until we needed to be on set,
Hannah whipped a poncho out of mybook bag and secured it around me
in my chair. Off we wentinto the cold, blustery, rain soaked
streets of New York. It wasso old and so many ye day two,

(23:27):
nine forty nine am. About halfwayto the venue, we came to
the end of a city block todiscover that it did not have a curb
cut. Crucial time was wasted whilewe doubled back to cross over to the
other side of the street. Howon earth did a city sidewalk in New
York effing City. I'm not sayingit's written out in the book. Yere

(23:48):
YouTube can still be inaccessible in twentynineteen was completely beyond us. We fumed
as the pouring rain soaked us tothe bone. Hannah broke the tension with
a joke I hope their creative teamwas looking for a wind swept, lost
at sea look, because that's whatthey're getting. I do remember I took
a selfie of us on the waythere where we're just like, we're like
city like street rats, like sewerrats. All day two, ten eleven

(24:15):
am. We were late, andupon arrival we found that the ramp installed
by the venue to comply with accessibilityregulations was nowhere close to code. It
was a giant slab of steel laidacross the staircase, much too steep for
me to ascend without Hannah pushing frombehind with all her strength. The brand
was understandably horrified to hear about ourstruggles that morning, and they completely sympathized

(24:40):
with our physical states. Time forhair and makeup Day two, eleven thirty
am. As a wonderful photoshoot wrapped, Hannah and I were reveling in our
fashionista glory when a representative from thebrand gave us some bad news. The
next available wheelchair taxi or car wasin two hours. They welcomed us to
hang out on set for that time, but we had another business meeting to
get to, so we did theentire soggy trip back to the hotel by

(25:03):
foot and wheel once again back tothe hotel. It was like kind of
fun, yeah, because we werelike, there's no problem now, it's
even hard. Yeah, I sayyou're down for at that point and we
were just like on cloud nine becauseeverything had worked out. They didn't kick
us out. Yeah, it wasfine all right. After this experience,

(25:23):
Hannah and I would like to sharesome advice. If you're ever traveling to
New York City in a wheelchair, schedule your car service three years in advance.
Day two ninety five PM, duringa late dinner after a mostly uneventful
rest of the day, a waiterbrought me a surprise brownie for dessert.
Confused, we explained that it mustbe the wrong table. However, he

(25:45):
insisted that an anonymous guest nearby hadordered it for me because they're happy to
see you smiling writing about this one. We anticipate some of you will question
what makes this encounter ablest? Afree brownie from a nice stranger? How
could that be? Miscon shoot isoffensive? Such entitled whiny millennials? We
must be. Here's the thing. If the mystery brownie benefactor just liked giving

(26:07):
out free brownies to random strangers andhe just so happened to pick me by
total chance. Fine, great,we're assholes and we misjudge this generous human
being. If, however, hischarity was targeting me for a specific reason,
perhaps that he felt pity seeing someonein a wheelchair and figured a brownie
might cheer up my bleak existence, then it's ableism. Hannah, for instance,
has never been given free food froma stranger simply because someone was happy

(26:32):
to see her smiling. We venturedabout that. Almost every able bodied person
reading this has never been given freefood, free money, or free gifts
by a stranger. It happens toShane on the regular, and it's usually
not from a mystery person. It'susually someone walking up to us and saying,
it warms my heart to see youout here having a good time.
Here's twenty dollars. It's a sweetperk of being disabled, but it's rooted

(26:53):
in ableism and makes us cringe.I'd just like to say that in the
past month we've had our meals diningout paid for twice ye by anonymous people
in the street, and it getsThe thing is, you're not doing it
for anyone else. No I've neverever had my meal paid for unless i'm
machine. And it's not like fans, you know, like if someone was

(27:14):
like I love your videos, likeI followed you guys, or I've read
your books, like, it's neverthat. It's always anonymous and the message
is like, you know, Ihope it brightens your life. It have
been so often that there have beentimes when Hannah and I are eating out
and I've told her, yes,do you see that person over there?
They're gonna pay for a meal?Yeah? I can tell just by the
way someone is like watching. Yeah, I know, like if they've sit

(27:40):
there the whole time just drinning.Yeah at me, I'm yes, I
don't have dessert. It is reallynice, but it's it's just a little
uncomfortable because it's not a normal thing. Yeah, ahead, that's the story.
Okay. As a couple, Hannahand I face ignorance like all of
these above moments on a daily basis. That's not an exaggeration, you for
emphasis every day. It happened somuch that a major part of our relationship

(28:04):
centers around discussing it, trying tobetter understand it, and sharing it with
all of you to hopefully one dayget rid of it. The brownie was
