Magic Insiders is presented by International Diamond Center, your local
diamond experts since nineteen eighty one. And now here are
your hosts, Dante Marctelli and Jake Chapman.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
And welcome every one of those Magic Insiders. We are
presented by International Diamond Center. Good Monday evening everyone. The
Orlando Magic Opening Week and the first game of the season.
Opening Night comes your way on Wednesday, the twenty second.
Right here on ninety six to nine. The game. We'll
have it for you on FanDuel Sports Network as well.
(01:12):
The Magic will kick things off against the Miami Heat.
It'll be the third time they've played them in four nights.
It feels like we'll get Miami again. This time it counts.
The other two don't count, but this time it'll count.
The Magic will start season thirty seven of franchise history,
and it'll happen on Wednesday night, seven o'clock will be
opening tips six thirty pregame show right here on ninety
(01:34):
six nine. The game six to thirty on FanDuel Sports Network.
The Magic go a perfect four and oh in the preseason.
The Magic will one of three teams that were undefeated
in the preseason, and it was the San Antonio Spurs
and the Houston Rockets. The Spurs go five and oh,
the Rockets go four to oh. But Jake, before we
get into all that, did you have a good weekend?
(01:54):
Did you enjoy the brownies? Did you are you following baseball?
Jay's got a game seven tonight, so we're all in
on that. There's what a great time of year for
sports fans.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
I think I think October is low key, as the
kids say, like a top three month. October is great,
and we and you and I have talked about especially
if you're from up north where the weather is like perfect,
but the weather's been perfect down here as well. Two
more sleeps, Dante until season thirty seven. I love saying that.
Definitely ready to get things kick kicked off this week,
(02:27):
but you're right, it was a good weekend. I have
sort of quit baseball, I am. I think they're headed
towards a work stoppage. I think there is such imbalance
and they have done the opposite of what the rest
of pro sports has done. Yes, I know, whereas we're
encouraging parody and every team, most what twenty five teams
beginning tomorrow night, Dante, I think probably feel like they
(02:47):
have a real shot this season, no question twenty In
the NBA and in Major League Baseball, it's like, well,
there's the Dodgers and then there's everybody else and maybe
the Mets in the With that said, the Blue Jays
are a fantastic story. We know the Seattle Mariners are
a fantastic story. So Game seven tonight will be a
whole lot of fun. And then who doesn't want to
get slapped around by the Dodgers in five In the
(03:11):
World Series, maybe the greatest player we've ever seen my
baseball Joy and Tony had in All Timer.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Over the weekend.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
What was that Friday or Saturday night? I'm not sure
that was Saturday.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
And you know what, and you know what, And it's
a shame too, because I you know it does it
doesn't matter to me. Once the Red Sox are out,
then I kind of look for the storylines. Obviously want
land as you know my wife Landa. I want her
Blue Jays to win. They haven't won a World Series
since ninety three. Then you see the Brewers have never
won a World Series. They haven't been since eighty two,
and you think, well, that's a great story. Wouldn't it
be awesome if it was the Blue Jays and the Brewers.
(03:43):
Then you know you're gonna have somebody that hasn't won
in thirty years. But the Dodgers are unbeatable. And I
saw somebody tweet out they figured it out, rest their
pitchers the entire year, and then bring them back and
bring them back sometime in August and then they're unhit
a bowl fresh and that's what we're seeing. But yeah,
O Tan three home runs on Saturday and ten strikeouts.
I mean, it's unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
We're watching absolutely unbelievable. And by the way, I mean,
what happened yesterday was set up a big showdown Patriots,
Brownies coming next.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Let's go, baby, let's go.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
I had a sense that we would be two and
five at this point, but.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
I did not have a sense we've already eclipsed our
win total from all of last year. That's awesome, Drake.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
He's on a heater and you guys got the guys.
Mike Crable, I'm very happy for you. We probably should
have he should be that coach of my team, I think.
But but man, it's fun watching those guys take off.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Mike Frable a consultant last year for the Cleveland Browns
and was not hired, was let go, and you know, Tennessee,
there are a lot of fans saying he should have
never left there either. One last thing before we get
Brown's number one defense though in the NFL, so that's
not going to be easy. Drake made the most efficient
quarterback in the NFL, so we'll see how that plays out.
Uh here coming up on Sunday, and then we get
the number two defense in the NFL. Atlanta coming to town.
(05:00):
It's just going to be it's it's good to have
the Patriots be somewhat competitive again, which is fun. Billy
Napier let go by the Florida Gators, probably probably a
year and a half later than everybody thought, but the
money holds on until then. And then you know, he's
had some tough losses this year, but then he gets
fired after a win. Your thought on Billy Napier, that's
a twenty one million dollar buyout. You hear James Franklin
(05:22):
out there. They're not gonna go get on the hook
for another guy with eighty million. You're not going to
tie up eighty to one hundred million dollars in another coach.
What happens with Florida, I doubt it.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
How about James Franklin, by the way, getting fired on Tuesday,
and he's on game day on Saturday morning, zero zero
shame on that guy. And you know what, I absolutely respected.
He was like, yeah, I'm getting back out there.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
He's been good wherever he's been. His teams have won
wherever he's gone.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Oh and you know what I thought. I thought he
was a little bit overrated. And obviously we play Penn
State each year they couldn't win the big game. With
that said, when you think about in hindsight, the program
that he took over in Happy Valley, he did a
fantastic job. He'll have a job soon and I think
he'll probably succeed wherever he goes. Look, it feels like
a year too late, like you said, as far as
Napier goes.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
For me, it was about.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Lagway because I watch I watch DJ Lagway throw the
ball and I go, that could be the top pick
in the draft. That thing flies off the hand and
he wasn't developing enough. And sometimes that has to you know,
obviously you go to the player first, but sometimes that
falls on the coach. So look, it's uf Man. They
have very high expectations and in today's SEC, with the
money that I think they have at their disposal, they
should be winning at a higher clipp than they are
(06:26):
right now. Question I'm just waiting on the other two
is how long is Mike Norvel and Mike McDaniels. Very
I mean, it could be, it could be a very
very a very very interesting week as far as college
football and pro football goes into State of Florida.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
If I'm the Gators. I go get Clark Lee. What
he's done with the Vanderbilt Commodore is unbelievable. And what
a big victory against LSU. That was their first time
beating LSU since nineteen ninety. This is awesome.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
When LSU loses, for me, it's like a double win,
especially if they lose to Vanby. But it's like when
Miami loses, Like I just love seeing Brian Kelly, So
I just love.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
That anchor down. Maybe where is Jeff Turner? Where is
Jeff Turner? The Orlando Magic inaction on Wednesday, Jake. They
finished the preseason, and we know the mantra coming out
of the preseason and coming out of training camp was
to play quicker, was to play fast, was to try
to get more possessions, get more shots, shots out mission accomplished.
I'm just gonna get your thoughts on this. The Magic
finished second in points per game in the preseason four games.
(07:23):
Small sample size team that was number one is the
Houston Rockets. And we know the Houston Rockets. They're picked
to potentially be contenders in the Western Conference. They average
one hundred and thirty point eight points per game. Did
the Rockets the Magic second at one twenty six point five.
And then you look at offensive rating and the Orlando
Magic and this hasn't been I can't think of any
(07:44):
stretch of any games during the last fifteen years where
they've been second in offensive rating. So I'll take it. Yes,
we'll overreact to the Magic finish second in points per
game and second in offensive rating in the preseason, granted
just four games. What do you make of that?
Speaker 3 (08:00):
Take a little bit of it. I mean, when you
think about where we were last year, right like, I don't,
I don't necessarily think it's going to equate immediately, but
it's much better than what we've seen. It's much better
than I think what we expected in the preseason. You
didn't think it was gonna happen quite like that. To
be sure, it's going to look different on Wednesday, but
you got to start somewhere, and to me, just sort
(08:21):
of changing the mentality that we're not going to rely
on our defense. You know, we are going to try
to get up and down, use our athleticism, our speed,
and our defense in our back pocket to generate more offense.
It was a mentality heading into camp and the results
showed up immediately. So I think that's exactly what you're
looking for. Again, you don't expect to score one twenty
(08:42):
eight beginning on Wednesday and then Friday, and said, right right,
But defensive teams, if you can get over one hundred
and ten points a game, you're going to win a
whole lot of games with the way you defend. And
and so so far, so good.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Yeah, it's been a great start. What about the points
for it?
Speaker 3 (08:57):
Now?
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Now, the thing that's going to hurt you is obviously
the turnovers, and this team was turnover prone and that's
something that that certainly can come back to bite you,
and you don't want to. You know, the coach Mosley
preaches being smart with the basketball preseason, so you know,
it's just a preseason when it fits the narrative. But
(09:18):
it's good for us. But you know your you're twenty
fifth and turnovers, that's the one thing the change you're
gonna see the magic at nineteen turnovers per game. Nineteen
turnovers per game. Now, a lot of that is personal.
You're mixing in new people, you're playing a lot a
lot of games with guys that aren't on your roster anymore.
So I certainly understand that but a lot of those
turnovers were in the first half of games when you
(09:39):
had your starters out there. So that's that's one thing
that you shored up when you went out and got
tyas Jones and Desmond Baine. But the turnovers, the turnovers,
is something we certainly have to keep our eye on
to start the season.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
Yeah, and you're gonna have to keep an eye on
what kind of turnovers. We always talk about live vers
deadball turnovers. Well, when you're pushing pace and you're and
you're getting passes picked off, for instance, because you're trying
to skip ahead two aggressively, those are live ball turnovers,
and oftentimes they're gonna equate to buckets coming back the
other way. I think it's you know, I'm okay with
with aggressive turnovers, especially if you're trying to get out
(10:11):
into early offense and push pace. I'm not okay with
dribbling into three guys and so as long as the
ball is moving, and we've seen that throughout the preseason,
I think you can live with a few of those
when you start, you know, really shooting yourself in the
foot is when you're giving buckets going back the other
way and then you're sort of bogging down in the
half court because you haven't found a rhythm, so you're
(10:31):
gonna have to kind of towe that line well.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
And you know, looking at this Magic team, I mean,
you've got to go back. You got to go back
several years before they were in the top ten in
offensive ratings. So yeah, it may not mean much, but
in the preseason they typically come out about seventeen to
twenty five in offensive rating, and to be second, I
just think it speaks to the fact that what they
were working on in practice and training camp is working.
(10:54):
Quicker decisions, make smart passes. With that extra possessions is
gonna come a few more turnovers. You gotta kind of
kind of watch that and try to keep that down.
But I think with all of this, the guys are
learning and the message has been received and they're certainly
doing the best that they can. Magic fans catch every

Speaker 1 (11:37):
Hey, Hey, this is Paula Bankiro of the Orlando Magic
and you're listening to Magic Insiders with my guys Dante
and Jake.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
Welcome back everyone in his Magic Insiders presented by International
Diamond Center Dante Marcitelli, Jake Chapman and again the Magic
have opening night on Wednesday night. The Orlando Magic will
HOAt the Miami Heat and we'll have it for you
at six thirty right here on ninety six to nine
in the game and six thirty on Fanduels Sorts Network.
Going to be back with Brian Hill on the pregame show.
I know you're excited to get off and running and
(12:05):
then you're gone all next week. Jake. We leave on
Sunday and then you are heading on the road. Have
your major preparations, got the house ready to be gone
for ten days? Trying to.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
Have several maintenance requests and with the company, try cleaner trip.
I got hooked up with a nice luggage from jacob
Our Equipment Manage Luggage. Yes, very very nice. So I
think I'm ready to go. I got my passport all said,
even though we're not going to get international just yet.
But yeah, starting off hot, and have you what five
(12:38):
games in ten days or something like that, first trip
of the season, first trip really of my magic radio careers.
So we're diving in with two feet for sure.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
And the NBA starts tomorrow night, and you love that.
You've got Monday Night football here tonight, You've got Game
seven of the World Series, and then the NBA can
own Opening Night in a couple of nights. And there's
nothing like Opening Night for the NBA. And you got
to give it to them. I know you mentioned the
troubles that baseball's had, and NBA has had its troubles
in the past with work stoppages and things like that,
but boy, we seem so far removed from that. There's
(13:10):
so much money now being generated by this league, and
they really the NBA has become a twelve month sport
and it's gonna be it's gonna be a blast when
we have Opening Night Oklahoma City getting their rings tomorrow night.
It's gonna be it's gonna be a special atmosphere in
the NBA. Oh man.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
I mean, there's so much good stuff happening around this
league right now. You think about the international games in
the preseason, the trip will be taking as a team
in January, the where the game is across the world,
where the game is domestically, how much young talent we have,
and you know, seven straight season, seven straight different champions.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
Like that is what right, right, that is what?
Speaker 3 (13:48):
That's music to Adam Silver's ears and going back to
David Stern and even beyond that's what you've always wandered
is you wanted every fan base to feel like they
have a chance, and if they don't, think they're not
that far off. Like we're never gonna be the NBA
or the NFL where one team wins four games one
year in twelve games the next year. You still have
to build it, I think. But boy, you draft the
(14:08):
right guy, and we're proof positive, so is Milwaukee. So
as you know, Oklahoma training for the right young player,
you can build this thing, you know, pretty pretty quickly
and hopefully pretty sustainably. The new CBA throws, some throw
some curveballs into that. But boy, it's it's gonna be
a whole lot of fun this year. And then you
and then you think about like all the young talent,
(14:29):
Like I was, I was thinking about Donovan Mitchell and
Anthony Edwards and who's gonna win the next MVP, who's
gonna be the next first MVP winner, And then I'm
thinking about Lebron and you're twenty three. Nobody's ever done
that before.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
Still right, so good?
Speaker 3 (14:44):
Still Steph Curry and some of the old talent, Kevin
Durant in Houston and what that means. And it's just
such a good spread of sort of different generations of talent,
international talent, domestic talent, or just in such a good place.
And they've all become such great ambassadors.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
A oh yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
And granted it's because they're making fifty million a year.
They've got you know, pr training, and they're also polished
now and they've been doing it since they're twelve years
old in some cases. But boy, it's it's really fun
to be a part of. And I'm really excited for
this season, not just because of where the league is,
but certainly more specifically because of where the Orlando Magic
are right now, it's gonna be a fun year.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
Well, and you're starting off with a bang. You've got
the Houston Rockets at the Oklahoma City Thunder, Right, the
thunder will get their rings. It's the debut of Kevin
Durant as a Rocket. And then you're gonna have the
Golden State Warriors at the Lakers, and you're gonna have
the debut of the NBA on NBC. Right, so we're
gonna hear the music, We're gonna hear all that. I mean,
it's gonna be a nostalgic night.
Speaker 3 (15:40):
James Katie being back in Oklahoma is like the fifth Story.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
Right, exactly right, exactly right, You're exactly right, which we
don't have time for it today. But I loved what
Kevin Durant said his comments the other day. Buckets is
what wins your championships. I goes, I can get anybody
in this room to bend their legs not touch the
basketball and defense because it's buckets. I've said that, you
did you right?
Speaker 3 (16:04):
That for him?
Speaker 2 (16:05):
Did that? Forever we hear the defense wins championships, and
yes it does. If you score enough. You have to
score enough points, and I love what he was saying there,
But I want to get your thoughts on this as
we preview it will a deeper dive into this tomorrow
and certainly on Wednesday as well. Obviously the guy this
team's going to go as far as Polo ban Cao
can take him. And Polo ban Caro had a solid preseason.
(16:27):
He played three games. Uh, didn't try to force it,
he was he was a facilitator a lot of times
or a couple of times he got mad, and he
did go finish, did a great job of getting to
the free throw line. But Polo, since the All Star
break last year, to me, Jake, that's what I look at.
The final twenty four games of the season, Pollo ban
Caro was fourth in the NBA in points per game
at twenty nine. Now, I don't know that he's going
(16:49):
to get to twenty nine this year. He made so
he could be. He could put up thirty a game
if he wanted to, and had it was him in
Franz carrying the load down the stretch. We know that
into the playoffs and Pollo Bankcero to still put up
twenty nine points per game, which was fourth best in
the NBA. He got you eight rebounds, he got you
four and a half assists, thirty three percent from three
(17:10):
to forty seven percent from the floor. Pablo Bankero was elite.
He was first team All NBA the final quarter of
the season. How much of that do we need to
start this year? Oh?
Speaker 3 (17:22):
Boy, it's a really good question, because he almost wanted
You saw him the preseason, he was sort of I
think his mentality right now is let's get everybody else
and then I'll be and then I'll.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
Jump on top of it of an.
Speaker 3 (17:35):
Already built house. And you sort of asked for it
last week, he said, aren't you kind of waiting for
Paula to explode it? When at one point before the
end of the preseason, and boy, he looked very good.
Certainly on Thursday night, he and Franz both looked ready
for the regular season to begin. I think, I think
we can sustain with him being All Star caliber for
(17:56):
a while. But then I think, but then, I do
think he needs to to jump into that MVP conversation
in order for us to get where we want to get.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
I don't want him to try.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
To go too hard, too fast, right, Let's build this
thing slowly, you bring in Desmond Bain so that Polow
doesn't have to be an MVP candidate for eighty two games,
and so ideally, like I just don't want him to
get to feel overburdened with carrying the entire offense, getting
out and going and getting easy buckets and transition setting
(18:26):
up your shooters. Having a guy like Franz, all of
that is in place so that Pollow doesn't feel like
he has to be all world right every second that
he's on the floor. So I think he can pick
up right where he left off. But I want him
to know that he has help. And so that means
that if you score twelve points and you're getting doubled
and you end up with ten assists one night, that's
(18:47):
fine as long as we win the basketball game. I
know he knows that, but I think in the aid
of the moment, I'm sure if you're as talented as
Paulo ban Caro, it's easy to say, give me that thing.
Speaker 2 (18:56):
I'm taking over res now.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
And hopefully he's able to build a little trust in
his teammates offensively as the season goes, because we're gonna
need everybody to be involved.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
Well and it's interesting. I love what Matt. It's all
very good points, and he will be in that MVP conversation.
I love what Matt Barnes, former Magic player, said on
his podcast, we all have to watch out for Polo
bank Caro, a guy that's going to be in the
MVP conversation, and he threw that out there as well.
But the names, and again, I hate to keep harping
on this, but I think Polo was healthy, he was fresh,
(19:26):
he was coming off the All Star break, and I
think that's the best version of Polo that we saw.
And it went into the playoffs. This is a playoff
team that all you had to worry about was Polo
and Franz. And Polo still got you almost thirty a
night in the playoffs, which, yeah, which was just astounding.
And if it wasn't for that, if it wasn't for
how things went in Game five in the second half,
the whistle not going Polow's way, I think that would
(19:48):
have been a much closer Game five as well. But
these are the names that he was amongst. Shay Gil
just Alexander led the NBA in scoring the final twenty
five games, right, and again we're talking the final quarter
of the season. This is a large sample size. It
was Shay Gildess, Alexander Luka, Doncic, Nikolea Jokicic. Those were
the three we were talking about for MVP all season long.
Then it was Polo. Then it was Jannis Kate Cunningham
(20:11):
who also had a breakout season, and that guy's legit
as well. Anthony Edwards, John Morant, Steph Curry, Jason Tatum.
That's your top ten. That to me is the company
that Polo Bankero is in.
Speaker 3 (20:24):
Jake Chapman, and you know when you look at the
month of March and basically posts all Star break that
what we're talking about. The big jump for Polo in
March last year was he shot over nine pre throws
a game and he made almost eighty percent. And we're
talking about a guy who usually is floating around seventy
two to seventy three percent. He started out last year
really bad. Remember he was fighting it up up to
(20:45):
seventy percent at the stripe. This guy can shoot ten
free throws a game. This guy can get to the
free throw line at a Yanis type clip more close
to it. So then how much many does he make?
Well if he makes seventy three percent versus eighty percent.
You're talking about a point or two a night. And
so he averaged thirty almost thirty points a game for
a month last season, and not just any month. It
was March it because everybody was. I mean, he is
(21:07):
that good. But I think that's a big part of
his game.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
Dude.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
If he shoots near eighty percent at the free throw
line this year, easy, easy MVP conversation, because I already.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
Five ish thirty five ish from three right, can you
get up to league average thirty five ish at which
he can certainly do? That shot is pure thirty five
ish and then yeah, exactly eighty ish from the free
throw line. Sky's the limit? Real quick. We'll end with this,
Jake our call the game. It's brought you by Glip
from ring Central. We think the way you work with
secure meetings and messaging on any device with Glip by RingCentral.

Speaker 3 (21:47):
I'm ready for that. First of all, we haven't talked
much about God Sham God, who he had on the
show on Friday, catching up with him. Yeah, I hopefully
we're talking about a dob on Wednesday night over the
Miami Heat on the stream on Thursday.
Speaker 2 (21:59):
But a lot of fun.
Speaker 3 (22:00):
We're doing a courtside countdown pregame stream this season before
every game. You can catch it on the YouTube's Orlando
Magic channel. Me Kendra Dan Savage, we'll have the whole squad.
Everybody's sort of chipping in on that one. And then yeah,
we're gonna try to do it weekly again this year

mini podcast, but with you guys involved. You can get
