It's Magic Insider, Jake Kevin, Dante Marketelli here with you
were presented by International Diamond Center.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
Who's the day? October fourteenth?
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Have the practice day another day closer to preseason game
number four.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
That means we're another day closer to opening night.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
That'll be eight days from now, Wednesday, October twenty second,
the hated Miami Heat in the house. It'll be seven
o'clock for the tip at Kia Center. Magic open up
with three games at home this year. We'll detail that
coming up here in a moment. But it's sort of
like a second crack at training camp. You've got what
about nine days in between the preseason game on Sunday
(01:29):
and then opening night, with one preseason warm up in
between that New Orleans game coming up, So a lot
of practice time, a lot of chances for Coach Mosley
and the guys to get back in the lab, try
to get right, some scrimmaging, and some good stuff as
we get set for the long and winding regular.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Season season Number thirty seven of Orlando Magic Basketball.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Dante Marcntelly my partner in crime, He joins me, Now, Dave,
we don't have a ton to go off of today.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
We had practice yesterday. It's it's that time.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Of year where you know, we're hoping we get NBAGM
surveys in order to go through. But I just wanted
to kind of recap where we've been. We're about two
weeks into training camp now. Obviously three preseason games. We've
talked a lot about the offense, which looks much better.
We've talked a lot about the pace. We've talked a
lot about X factors and guys we might not be
(02:18):
talking about enough making an impact this season. But as
you look back just at the last two weeks, what's
your biggest surprise, What's something that's got to caught you
off guard a little bit? Then maybe you thought might
be something we might see but that you've seen a
lot of it, or maybe the opposite, maybe something you
thought we were going to see a lot of in
the preseason and we haven't seen that much of.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
I tell what caught me off guard was not saying
pollow and Desmond Bin on that last preseason game. I
thought for sure nineteen thousand fans were wanting to see that.
We'll have to wait, We'll wait a little more. Let's
stop there.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
Let me cut you off, because I don't know if
people watch on Friday. I hope people watch the preseason
game on Friday night in Philadelphia, d What were there
about six hundred people there in that building Aladelphia on
Friday that it was It was sparse, sparse.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
However, you say that word, dude.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Nineteen thousand tickets sold for that, and it looked like
most of those nineteen thousand people showed up.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
I mean, Netflix was packed on something. It was awesome.
It was awesome. And I say it in Jess because
I obviously there's a plan in place, and there was
a reason why guys play or don't play throughout the preseason.
They've got a whole plan. But there was an electricity
in that building. There was a buzz, there was a there,
it's a ton of excitement. Nineteen thousand people, and I'm thinking,
(03:35):
if I'm Jace Richardson looking into that crowd, and if
I'm Desmond Baine who just joined us and Tias Jones,
I guarantee all of their previous stops, you did not
have a crowd like that for a for a preseason game.
So I thought that was great. I was great to
be back in the building. It was great to see,
you know, to see people again, to catch up with
fans and all that stuff. That's one of the most
(03:55):
fun things for us all throughout the all throughout the season.
But I think for us, you know, I'm a little
bit surprised. I guess that with the offense that we've
put up and we've touched on that. I thought the
offense would be a work in progress, and I thought,
would you know, eventually ramp it up, you know, maybe
start about ninety five points a game, maybe get to
about one hundred and five and to come out and
(04:17):
blow teams out offensively. You're putting up one hundred and
twenty plus. And the way we're looking, the speed which
with we're playing, I think is fantastic. The defense has
been solid enough. I think I'm a little bit surprised
on these rookies and how how seamlessly they seem to
be fitting in. I think that's a that's a big
piece and if we're looking for things that can get
(04:37):
better or you know, to me, I we got to
get Jonathan Isaac going. You know, he had a rough
last year. Will be the first one to tell you
we got her. I think these are big preseason minutes
for him. I think Thursday is a big game for him.
I think the first couple weeks of the regular season
are going to be big for him as we continue
to kind of work him up. Got to get tyas
Jones a little bit more comfortable with running guys through here,
(04:59):
and you know, things like that. But I think all
in all, I think there's a lot to be excited about.
Anthony Black looks fantastic, you know, and then let's have
one big game from Polo before we start the season.
I'd love like a statement. I'd love like a statement.
Ten minutes three, he comes out and says, yeah, I
know it's the preseason. I'd love to not be here
right now. I'd love for this game account, but I'm
gonna go ahead and dominate this ten minutes while I
(05:21):
about here, which she hasn't had to do. That's not
what the preseason is about. But I'd love to see
him kind of get his timing before the season starts
as well.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
We talked plenty of about jas Fridgerdson, but I think
it's important to just sort of go back and remember
the idea that Danton Marcitellis has been spouting for what
six seven years now, which is that you don't need
a top ten pick in order to nail your first
run draftick. And if this guy's not proof of concept, Bee,
(05:52):
then I don't know what is. I mean, the twenty
fifth pick in the draft. But there is such especially
in today's day and age with nil and sort of
a watered down NBA draft crop, which may change that
that goes year to year. There is there are so
many good players and it is so much about fit
that when you find a guy at twenty five who
(06:12):
very well could have been a top ten pick, you know,
had he played a little more in December or made
and you know, an extra percentage of his threes or whatever.
I think this guy is proof that you can you
can find really darn good players in the back half
of the first round. In the second round, we've got
MVPs that were second round picks all over the place,
(06:35):
or not necessarily all over the place, but Nicola Jokich anyways,
I mean, this guy absolutely delivers on the idea that
you don't need a lottery pick in order to get
somebody not only who is going to be a good
player eventually, but who can contribute right away.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
Well. And for every Jan Vessely that's taking fourth overall, right,
there's a guy like Desmond Bay right, who's the thirtieth pick. Right,
just because you get a top ten pick, you're not
guaranteed anything, you know, It's it's very difficult for a
lot of these teams and you feel you got to
kind of go with the upside. And I get it,
you know, because if you do get a top pick,
you can get Apollo Bank Carrol. So I get the appeal.
(07:10):
I get why you're trying to get that. I mean,
look at what Ace Bailey's doing and Dylan Harper. I
mean I get why you're trying to get it in there.
But at the end of the day, all thirty teams
have to make the best decision wherever you're drafted, and
these are not throwaway picks at twenty five. These are
not throwaway picks at thirty, you know what I mean.
And I so that that's why I think, yes, there's
(07:30):
you know, when you make the four the four first
round picks for Desmond Baine, like Memphis is gonna get
talent there too. These are guys the Magic are out
of spot where someone picked twenty fifth in the draft,
including Jas Richardson. It's gonna be hard to get minutes.
It's gonna be you're just going in a position where
you know where you're you're going with veterans, you need
guys that have kind of been through it a little
(07:51):
more and you kind of already have established your core,
but that doesn't mean you don't have to go out
and nail your pick and do the best you can.
And the magic to Jeff Weltman and every buddy's credit, boy,
it looks like they've done that. Jake. I really like
his demeanor. I really like his IQ, his poise, his
you know, just his craftiness, his shiftiness out there on
the floor. And now he doesn't seem to get too rattled.
He was nervous in the first half of his first
(08:13):
game in Puerto Rico, but you can certainly understand that.
I mean, if he's got any questions or needs guidance,
he is pretty good. Pretty good dad played in the
NBA that can help him out, you know, through that
as well. So he just seems like he fits the part.
And who knows what that workload is going to look like.
Is he gonna go multiple games without getting in sure?
Is he gonna go stretches where he plays maybe ten
straight games, yeah? Is he gonna get twenty minutes some
(08:36):
night to the other, yeah? Absolutely? But whatever his role is,
I think that's a guy that you that you can
absolutely plug in there seamlessly, and he's gonna do a
great job.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
And when you're talking about the race to the bottom,
you know, it's not all drafts are created equally.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
You could be the Timberwolves of Anthony Edwards.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
You could get Kate Cunningham, you could get Pollo, you
could get Wemby, or you could.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Be Atlanta and get Zachary Resasche. And that's exactly you
don't know what are you gonna go. I mean, look
at look at you know, while we're talking preseason, I
mean it could look at you know, Liberty had a guy,
Taylor Peter. This guy was a Division two player and
you know started in Division two. Liberty took him last year.
He gets drafted like fifty sixth in the draft and
he has eighteen points the other night for the Indiana Pacers.
(09:17):
Looks like he may looks like he may make the team.
You know, you have Lamont Butler in Atlanta, you have
Caleb Houston hits the game winner the other night. And
it just depends on where you have to get the
right guy. And I love Caleb and right I think
we'll talk about more on that later, but you have
to get the right and it's it's a fit for
the team. And again is Desmond Baine was the thirtieth
pick in the draft. You can find guys later in
(09:39):
that first round. Tyrese Maxey was at the end of
the draft. Jared McCain, you know, was later in the
first round. So there are guys to be had. You
just have to do your due diligence, and I think
the Magic did that. When it's all said and done, Jake,
I think we're gonna be talking about one of the
steals of this draft.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
Yeah, I mean, it's certainly he's well on his way.
It's the preseason. We're not h we're not anointing him
just yet. But he's passed every test that's been placed
in front of him as far. And like we said yesterday,
if you put.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
To the guy, it's better than a guy going er
for five, having two points and saying, well, you know,
he's rusted. He just needs time. That's just a free
I'd rather for Pether. I'd rather have this. It's just
the preseason. As opposed to that, it's just the.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
Preseix exactly exactly well put, very well put real quick
before the break. Obviously, you know, we enjoy all of
our listeners along the network and we want everybody to
tune in ninety six y nine, the Magic app, the
iHeartRadio app wherever you stream our games or listen to
our games here in Central Florida. But if you are
(10:41):
trying to watch the games, just want to make sure
we have all the messaging down for that. You got
to make sure you get the Fan Duel app first
and foremost. But then you can also go to Orlando
Magic dot com slash Broadcast if you want to check
out all the different broadcast information.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
D you take it from there. Yeah, it's really it's
really nice with what they've done here so far. I mean,
if you you know you can get home, you can,
if you're in your car, we want you listening right
here ninety six to nine in the game. But you
get on home and flip on the TV. You can
do it through FanDuel. If you have a spectrum, you
can get FanDuel through that. Otherwise, just download the app.
It's a monthly subscription you can get through that. Orlandomagic
(11:16):
dot com. Slash Broadcast has all the ways, but Amazon
has gone and made it super easy for everyone as well.
For all of your Amazon Prime members, you can go
right on there. You can open up Amazon Prime and
you can find the Orlando Magic tile and you can
order FanDuel through that. So they made it all super easy. Yeah,
so I had everything you streamlined. A lot of people
already have all their credit card information locked up through Amazon.
(11:39):
So we encourage everybody to tune in. It's going to
be a special year. You can even die. I don't
care if you put the game on and listen to
Jake and tune me out. You don't want to hear me.
You want to hear Jeff Turner and Jake Chapman. You
know when the team is on the road. So but
make sure you're tune it in great, great way to
follow the Magic all season long on FanDuel for sure.
Speaker 3 (11:55):

We'll take a break, we'll come back with an addition
of Hoopscoop. Oh, it's that time. Hoopscoops back when we

Speaker 1 (12:43):
This is Jas Richardson of the Orlando Magic and you're
listening to the only official.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
Magic podcast, Magic Insiders with Dante and Jake. Take it away, boys,
Welcome back Magic Insiders. Jake Chaman, Dante, Marco Kelly here
with you. Magic getting sent for preseason game and number four.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
That'll be on Thursday meg the New Orlands Pelican in
Town seven o'clock.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
Tip.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
We'll have a full broadcast for you here on ninety
six to nine the game and on the Magic Audio Network.
Brandan Krabatz takes the air at six thirty with Magic Tonight,
the pregame show, and then we will get into it
the preseason finale. Your second chance to get a look
at the new Insane center long scoreboard and displays at
the Kia Center, Dante, that was one thing I kind
(13:23):
of got buried. We're so excited of nineteen thousand people
in ninety thousand tickets sold on Sunday, Miami Heat taken.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
Ol blah blahlah blah blah.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
That new scoreboard is in absolute delight and it's a
it's a feast for the census, Dante.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
That's a great way to put it. It is a
feast for the Census. It's amazing. I'm curious how many
fans were watching that scoreboard as opposed to watching the action.
Rock bra I thought a lot of people. I was
looking across the court and there's a lot of people
looking up at that board. There's so much information on there.
I think we were talking about we heard yesterday in
our staff meeting the last scoreboard had nine thousand, nine
(14:00):
million pixels on it. This one is fifty six million.
It's unbelievable the upgrade, how clear it is, the replays
that you can get real time, it's it's amazing.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
You could have drove that, and if somebody asked you
to prove that, you just kind of take their take
their word for when they tell you how many.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
Pixels are in there, right, there's a lot, there's a lot.
I'm told that, I just take their word for it,
and that would that would certainly be right at the
top of the list, and anything else it related. I'm
at the uh dot.
Speaker 3 (14:26):
They also upgraded the audio system, which for people like
you and I is is big news. Put it this way,
we were five minutes into the broadcast and Kyle Cassandra
turned to me and he said, we got to contact
somebody about these speakers. I said, Kyle, they're not going
to turn the audio down for us, but cut these
big speakers blasted. Look, it's awesome. We had to make
(14:46):
some minor adjustments. Of course, that's why we have Kyle,
he's our director of quality control. But yes, it is,
it is. It is loud, appropriately loud, and and that
new center hung and the four giant displays in all
four corners of the arena absolutely spectacular.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
So it was it was outstanding, and that there were
nineteen thousand people that left having the time of their
lives because of all the things you just mentioned. It
really is a great compliment to each other.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
And as we know, the preseason's fun, especially when you
get upgrades like that, your first chance to see all
that stuff. I mean, we've had a lot of upgrades
over the course of the offseason, but opening night is
an absolutely different animal. So if you don't have tickets,
to make sure you go on Orlanto magic dot com
and get set for game number one of what we
hope is a very long and fruitful season. All Right,
we have delayed long enough. We're in what week number
(15:35):
three now of Magic Insiders, and we haven't gotten to
a hoopscoop yet.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
Let's do it and be oh, let's go, let's go.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
We've spent countless minutes scouring the world of hoops to
bring you the following.
Speaker 2 (15:47):
This is hoopscoop, all right, Dante.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
As he's mentioned in yesterday, the Miami heater insane, and
they're playing.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
Six preseason games, including the road.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
To back against US on Sunday and then in Atlanta
last night.
Speaker 3 (16:04):
And kind of noteworthy because you mentioned yesterday that you
think Miami is you know, I'm not sure how I
was gonna look this year. Obviously, you gotta get Tyler
hero back, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Well, Bam
and Norman Paul and Andrew Wiggins all started that game
last night against the Atlanta Hawks and they were down
thirty five to twenty four after the first quarter.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
The Heater are now zero to five on the preseason.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
Got one more last crack at it this Friday against
Memphis Dante. Does that outcome steer you any further into
doubting the Miami Heat this year?
Speaker 2 (16:36):
I will say this.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
I you know, I always hesitates to count out the
Miami Heats, but I think I'm I'm lessening the range
of outcomes. I don't think there's any champs that team
wins any more than forty five games this year.
Speaker 4 (16:50):
I think they may be a solid six seven seed
Miami Heat team, Like can't figure out how they're doing it,
trung defense, whatever, But I don't think they're gonna like
fall surpass expectations.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
I just can't see that team being very good this year.
You have twenty six points to Jacob Toppin and the
game winner to Caleb Houston, So yeah, I think that
the one hundred and nineteen points that they gave up.
And now Caleb can shooting, as we know, but uh,
but that that that game got away from him on
the defensive end, as has the whole preseason, but not
doing a whole lot of competing on the defensive end.
(17:22):
But you said it yesterday and I thought about it
after we finished the show. You're right. You never count
out Eric Sposer. Eric Spolston is going to have that
team ready to play, ready to go. I just think
this summer just seemed different. You don't you don't have
Jimmy Butler. You got Banam out of Bay, who's kind
of the backbone of that thing, but you don't you
don't have those guys that just are you know, the
(17:43):
Edonnis Haslams, the you know, those kind of guys that
you're used to seeing there. It's it's gone more offensive
with Andrew Wiggins, with Norman Powell, with Tyler Hero. You've
kind of shifted your whole philosophy in my opinion. Now
you've still got guys that compete, and you've got great
defensive players on that team, but you've kind of shifted
your mental reality. And that's not Spolstra's style, Like spots
(18:03):
are gonna muck things up, gonna be a defensive player.
So again, maybe he's just adjusting with the times. But
it just felt like a different approach this summer that
I don't think is gonna work. I'm not sold that
that's gonna come together. And if it does, I don't
think it'll be any higher than eight or ninth in
the East.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
Yeah, and to be clear, the heat started eight most
of their starters obviously still no Tyler hero but the Hawks,
they weren't going against Jalen Johnson, Jaya Johnson, very young.
It was Jacob tomm and he played forty two minutes
last night. He crazy and we love be creachy, but
but you.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
Know what you're but but we are happy for Caleb Houston.
That is the funny thing. That's the hard thing about
this business is you know, yet you have to let
you have to make decisions on a Coole Anthony, you
have to make decisions on a Cayleb Houston. I was
probably more ready than most for Gary to move on,
but you know, he's there in Milwaukee and it's you know,
it's not had a great start, but Gary's Gary's a
(18:56):
solid vent and he's gonna be fine. Uh, for there
because I just think he needed more from that position
and we're getting it now, right, and maybe he'll be
the perfect bet for Milwaukee. So unfortunately, you got to
make you got to make tough decisions, and these guys, now,
these guys get big opportunities as well, and they can
be thankful for the opportunity they had with the Magic
to kind of get him ready for the next step
(19:16):
in their careers.
Speaker 3 (19:17):
Yeah, I think that was a pretty easy decision Caleb,
You're right. I mean, he look it kind of clicked
for him last season. He played fifty eight games, he
shot forty percent three three point three three pointers a game.
That was one of those I think that was a
tough decision for the front office because you had put
a lot into developing him and you knew. I think
you watch Caleb walk Away and you know he's not
(19:39):
gonna be overseas in a year or two. Like he's
gonna latch on somewhere and he's got that skill that
that one specific skill set that he can hang his
hang his hat on. So we're big Caleb Houston fans
the Machine and we know he'll be delivering for Atlanta
this year. Just hopefully not the four times he played
in Atlanta. He made five threes last night, Gote, he.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
Made five threes. He can he can shoot up. But
we're at a point now where we need You can't
go two months without a rebound, you know what I mean? Yes,
Like we need guys that can do it all. And
I think that's what I love about what we've got now,
secondary third playmakers, guys that can reabout, guys that make that.
You've got a lot more versatility now, which I think
is great.
Speaker 3 (20:15):
Absolutely real quick before we go, let's talk about the King.
He is getting set to play in what his twenty
third NBA season. Nobody's ever done that before. But talk
about old man stuff. He's not going to play for
the first couple weeks of the regular season because of sciatica,
which I think I have that it seems very painful.
(20:35):
It's like a nerve issue. I'm positive, but I'm about
Lebron's age. I'm nowhere near the wear and tear that
he's had to deal with. But let me just ask you, Dante,
as we look at the Lakers, nobody really understands exactly
what to expect. But I just want to be clear
because I'm hearing a lot of Luca for MVP talk,
and my comeback to that each time is, well, can
you be MVP if you're not the best player on
(20:56):
your team? And I think we still are for getting
how good Lebron James is even at forty one years old.
The guy in the Minnesota Series last year averaged twenty
five points, nine rebounds, five and a half assists in
forty one minutes and shot forty nine percent from the field.
Now they lost in five, but I just think, like
Lebron is, you know, the sciatica thing, whether or not
(21:19):
it's his last year, the fake decision, all of that stuff.
I don't think the Lakers are necessarily championship contenders, but
I think Lebron's gonna be Lebron again, and I think
he'll probably play for another three or four years.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
Amen, Man, I think that's a great point. I was
listening to someone the other day. I think it was
Sam Mitchell who put it best. You know, they once
upon a time the Lakers were looking to trade him
because of the salary contract, right, fifty plus million, maybe
sixty million, But he goes, look, the guy's still producing.
It was twenty five seven and seven last year, the
guys putting up numbers. He goes, so, what's gonna happen.
(21:50):
You're gonna buy him out and then he's gonna go
join the Minnesota Timberwolves or whoever Cleveland Cavaliers for the
veteran minimum. So you're gonna get Lebron James bring him
off the bench for the veteran minimum. For a guy
that's still getting twenty five seven and seven at forty
one years of age, he's not that player yet. He's
not the guy that's just hanging on just to hang
(22:11):
on and try to get one more run. He is
still at the top of his game. He's gonna be
an All NBA player. He's gonna get oder her third
team at the he played sixty five. Yeah, exactly right.
