your hosts, Dante Marctelli and Jake Chapman.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
And welcome everyone to Magic Insiders. We are presented by
International Diamond Center Dante Marcitelli. Here Jake Chapman as well,
and the Magic gets set for Game two of this
three game homestand tonight they will host the Atlanta Hawks.
The Magic win two and two against Atlanta last last
year and they're trying to start the season two and
oh we'll have it for you at six thirty right
here on ninety six to nine, The Game six thirty
on FanDuel Sports Network. Jake, how did it feel to

(01:14):
get Opening Night under your belt and to grab that
first victory? Jalen Suggs back. I know, we had our
live show yesterday. We streamed live for all the folks
on the Atlanta Magic YouTube channel, so that was fun.
We addressed a little bit of that. But good to
be back solely on this show. No live streaming component,
but good to be back here doing this. I like
the live streaming and we look forward to providing that

(01:36):
for you all year. But it was nice to get
that Opening Night win, wasn't it? It was nice.

Speaker 4 (01:40):
It's always nice to get Opening Night under your belt.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
There's so much excitement going into it, but there's always
nerves from a broadcast standpoint and all of that stuff.
You know, It's just it's when everything is for real.
So ready to get back at it, certainly. Like urban
Meyer used to say, the best thing about going one
and oh is the chance to go two and oh.
Go right, So let's start stacking them it's going to

(02:02):
be you know, we'll talk about it's gonna be a
really interesting matchup tonight. You get Miami the other night,
you know, is as good defensively year in and year
out as you'll see, and then you get Atlanta tonight,
and I think Quinn Snyder sort of has an identity
crisis with this team.

Speaker 4 (02:17):
But the one thing that we do.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
Know is that they allowed one hundred and thirty eight
points to the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night. So I
think it's it's the temptation is going to be there
for this thing to turn into a track meet. We
know that's been our goal throughout the preseason, But careful
what you wish for when you're talking about Trey Young
on the other side, I think we want to kind
of control the pace against that team.

Speaker 4 (02:38):
I don't know if we want to be hanging one
thirty eight either way.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Well, the Magic they gotta be a little more efficient.
They got to figure that out as they play with
this pace in up tempo style, and they will, they'll
figure that out. And it looked really good at times,
and it looked a little clunky at times in that
third quarter where they had eight turnovers. So that's something
that's going to be a work in progress. They've got
to get back to playing the kind of defense that
we're used to. And I think it's interesting. We're probably
not going to see the one oh five ninety nine

(03:05):
games anymore if you're playing up Temple, simply because you're
going to get more possessions the opponent. You held your
opponents about eighty one field goal attempts per game last year.
That was by far the fewest in the NBA. Those
days may be gone for now. You're trying to play
up Temple. You're trying to get more more points as
easy as possible, and to try to not have to
play in that half court style. Magic started two and
oh last year. They got two wins at home and

(03:26):
then lost game number three of the year when they
took their first road game of the season, went to
the Memphis Grizzlies to play Desmond Bane and the Grizzlies.
So trying to go two and oh for the second
time in two years and to do so, you know, Jake,
there's a lot that you can build on. Certainly what
you did on the offensive end, putting up one hundred
and twenty five points, knocking down twelve threes, shooting thirty

(03:46):
eight percent from beyond the arc, you had twenty three assists.
A lot to like that you can build on. What
are some of the things that might concern you against
the Atlanta Hawks here tonight.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
Yeah, well, what you just said, you know, and you
and me and co Chill we're talking about it a
little bit this morning, Like there's going to be more
possessions in every game if we're going to play at
this pace, So then you want to keep an eye
on the defensive field goal percentages, things like that. Are
you defending over more possessions but at the same sort
of efficiency that you were using last year? Coach Mosley

(04:18):
said this morning, he was, like he said, he was
very proud of how his defense got better as the
game went on. And so that's I think it's not
necessarily how you start, it's always how you finish in
the NBA. And at the very least, the last six
minutes of that game felt like magic basketball on that
side of the floor. Look this Atlanta team, like I said,
I think if you if we turn it into if

(04:40):
it's one twenty five to one twenty, then I think
it's kind of dangerous, Like, I'm not sure we want
to get up and down at the rate that Atlanta
wants us to get up and down and we'll be comfortable.
I think we want to try to slow this one
down a little bit just because of who the the
opponent is. They're still working in new guys and they
made some moves in the offseason that reinforced the rotation,

(05:02):
and we'll start to go through that. But we played
Christops Perzingis really well when he was with Boston. He
was the least of my concerns. So I'm not really
worried about that. I'm a little bit more worried about
Jalen Johnson coming back. He was awesome the other night,
twenty points, eight rebounds, seven assists that I believe it
was or eight assists, seven rebounds. And now you know,
they add Nikhil Alexander Walker to sort of bolster the

(05:25):
bench as well. They've got some real talent on the
wings all of a sudden, not to mention Dyson Daniels
and Trey Young of course, so it's a really good
team kind of on the perimeter, and I think we're
gonna I think we're gonna have to kind of play
some bully ball tonight.

Speaker 4 (05:40):
Hopefully we're able to play a little bit different style.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
Than we showed against Miami against this team, because I
think it sort of suits us.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
It's a team that scares me. I know we had
some conversations about this the last couple of weeks on
Magic Insiders. You know, a team that could be one
of those surprise teams in the East, and I just
feel like there's an awful lot of talent. I kind
of like the additions that they made, and we can
make this our call of the game. Brought you by
Glip from Ring Central. Wethink the way you work with
secure meetings and messaging on any device with Glip by RingCentral.
Visitclip dot com to learn more. I think the Magic

(06:10):
stole the off season by far with the addition of
Baine and Tyas Jones and the drafts that they made.
But I think pretty close was the Atlanta Hawks. I
like what they did, adding Kristapps Porzingis, adding Nikhil, Alexander Walker,
adding Luke Kennard, which I think is a big addition
as well. You know, Ason Newell is a guy that's
going to be this guy's going to get an opportunity

(06:31):
at some point during the year if they're healthy right on.
Yeka Kongwu is a guy that's hurt the Magic in
years past and now you have a healthy Jalen Johnson.
Congrats by the way to Caleb Houston who makes the
who makes it on a two way contract for the
Atlanta Hawks. So you mentioned Kris Dopps Porzingis. That's probably
their prize free agent right acquisition. When when you get

(06:51):
him and pair him up along Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels
an incredible defender, they have the ability to be an
unbelievable defensive team with him protect the rim. They gave
up one hundred and thirty eight points to the Toronto Raptors.
They gave up eighty six points in the paint. Eighty
six points in the paint with a seven to three center.
That's because he's out shooting threes. And I understand that

(07:12):
he's made a three and thirty three consecutive games. That's
second most for a center in the NBA. Victor Webbin
Yama has done it forty three times. So we know
what Kristaps Porzingis can do. That's a guy that if
he's on he's very dangerous from beyond the arc. He
can score a little turnaround in the paint. He can
protect the rim, like the Magic are gonna have to
be a guy like Wendell Carter Junior and Gogo Patazi

(07:32):
will have their hands full with Kristaps Porzingis in the middle.
Now for Atlanta, it's kind.

Speaker 4 (07:37):
Of interesting because a Congo is a really good player.
He's a very good rim protector.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
He's not a good shooter, and and so it doesn't
it kind of feel like, Okay, if a Congo's in
the game, he's gonna roll to the rim, and if
Perzingis is in the game, he's gonna pop when they run.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
Pick and roll.

Speaker 3 (07:50):
And so it feels like a third down back in football,
Like I know it's coming.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
Specialty plays run up.

Speaker 4 (07:56):
The gut right now. But but he is.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
He is a real good two way player at those
two things, rim protecting and then getting down and spacing
the floor as a big the other in the other direction,
and that was exactly what they were looking for. So
it feels like a really good fit. But I do think,
you know, he's a player who commands attention. There is
gonna be an adjustment period. A little bit, and I
think it just makes me wonder, like, what do they

(08:22):
give up thirty four fast break points the other night.
I think there's gonna be some stuff that they give up,
like transition defense potentially that is that's not necessarily. Porzingis specialty,
so he's not great necessarily if you get him in
pick and roll, you know, sliding his feet. I think
there are ways to attack him, and I think we
proved that in the Boston series last year and anytime

(08:42):
we've seen them the last couple the last couple of seasons,
the more we got Perzingis involved in the Boston offense.
And granted that was partially because they had Tatum and Brown,
the better it was for us.

Speaker 4 (08:52):
And so I think I think there are ways.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
I think there are ways to attack yes Pois. And
it's very similar here though, Trey Young and Jalen Johnson
two guys that are very capable of doing damage as well.
So it's going to be anyone that plays Atlanta. It's
going to be a pick your poison thing again.

Speaker 3 (09:07):
But those are the two guys that really scare me. Okay,
Like I think if if Perzingis knocks down a couple
of triples and u and and plays his standard defense.
That's kind of what you're expecting. You can't let Jalen
Johnson get roll, and you can't let Trey have you know,
thirty and fifteen type night let Persing gets get his
But those other two guys are really who concerned me.

(09:28):
And then I'm really anxious to see the backcourt matchup
with a healthy and effective Dyson Daniels, who just landed
in the right spot.

Speaker 4 (09:36):
It seems like most improved player last year.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
I asked coach mostly this.

Speaker 4 (09:39):
Morning, Jalen Johnson probably was going to win the most.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
Improved player until he got hurt grand points and then
Dyson Daniels wins it. I said, what does that tell
you about Quinn Snyder And he said, he's a hell
of a coach, And of course, praise Quinn. He's like
your favorite coaches favorite coach, Like everybody knows Quinn Snyder
puts together a hell of a game play. So I'm interested.
This is gonna be a good one tonight. And don't
forget Dante. We went twelve four against division opponents last

(10:02):
year and early in the season you don't think too
deeply about that. But with Charlotte and Washington and our division.
We need to stack wins against those teams, and every
time you beat in Miami or Atlanta it could go
a very long way when you're talking tie breakers and
division championships at the end of the season.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
That is a very good point, and you don't overlook
anybody anyway, but you certainly can't afford to do so. Now,
these games are always close. We always play Atlanta right
down to the wire. They've been some terrific basketball games.
But if you can find a way to especially early
in the season while teams are trying to figure things
out right, if you can steal a couple of these
early on being the most prepared team, that certainly sets

(10:39):
you up well here down the stretch. Magic Fans catch

We are back breaking down tonight's action when we return
to Magic Insiders in a moment here on ninety six
to nine a game. This is dezen Vain of the
Orlando Magic, and you're listening to the only official Magic podcast,
Magic Insiders with Dante and Jake. Take it away, boys,
and welcome back every one of those Magic Insiders. We

(11:22):
are presented by International Diamond Center, Dante Market, Delly, Jake Chapman.
Here with you. The Magic are back at it tonight.
They're playing the first of four meetings with the Atlanta Hawks.
A Magic win two and two last year the last
time we saw them, a triple double for Keaton Wallace,
who now got a standard contract, fifteen points, fifteen rebounds,
eleven assists. He was unbelievable on a game in Atlanta.

(11:43):
We'll have it for you six thirty. Right here, ninety
six to nine the game. Brandon Kravitz with your pre
game show and I'll have it for you at six
thirty on FanDuel Sports Network. Brian Hill, Nick Anderson will
join me for the broadcast and listen. You haven't heard
us talk about it here on Magic Insiders. We are
well aware of everything that's happening in the sports world
and in the NBA right now. There's just a lot

(12:04):
more to unfold and there's really nothing to comment on
at this point. There's so much more that we have
to learn and we have to see, and once things
are finalized then that becomes a different, different conversation. But
certainly aware of everything that's been going on here here
the last twenty four hours, no question about it. But
the Magic go back in action here tonight and taking
on an Atlanta Hawks team that trying to get their

(12:25):
first win of the season, allowing one hundred and thirty
eight points to the Orlando Magic and Jake in that
victory for Orlando against the Miami Heat, you know, was interesting.
You go into these games thinking, Okay, you know, Polo
had a solid preseason, what's he how's he gonna kind
of get himself going here? And Miami was determined to
not let him right. So he's double team, triple team

(12:48):
and still at the end of the day, twenty four points,
eleven rebounds, Right, get you a triple double. I'll get
you a double double. Franz Wagner was the one that
came out hot. He was carrying you there in the
first half. You're excited about the new editions, right, Desmond
out of Desmond Bain and Tiest Jones. Look, right, are
we going to get a look at the rookies? You know,
maybe maybe get a look at one of them or
two of them here tomorrow, depending on Jalen Suggs status.
But then all of that gets trumped by the return

(13:10):
of Jalen Suggs. We saw him in practice a couple
of days before, and in talking with Goga Batase this
morning and his face lighting up about the effect that
Jalen Suggs has on this team. You know, I had
asked him, Jalen Suggs obviously fires up the crowd, but
does he have a similar effect on you guys? He goes,
oh my gosh, without even realizing when he's up there

(13:31):
getting into the point guard defensively, you don't even notice
it sometimes, but it fires up the crowd and it
gets us fired up. You realize we have to pick
up our defensive intensity. And he said it. He's the
heart and soul of this thing. You know, I think
that sometimes is kind of the forgotten thing, is what
Jalen means to the crowd is what he means to
your defensive end, but what he means to his teammates

(13:52):
having him out there and the trust that they have
on him, especially on the defensive end.

Speaker 4 (13:55):
Boy, that's a really good point.

Speaker 3 (13:56):
And then when you think about the other two leaders
of the team and their methods of leadership, Paul and
Franz are basically in the opposite end of Jalen just
as far as outward emotion, right, they're both so cool
and so and so you need that, you need the spark,
and it helps when the spark.

Speaker 2 (14:14):
Which end of the spectrum does Goga skew towards.

Speaker 4 (14:17):
But well, that's a great question.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
Wherever that's more towards Jalen.

Speaker 4 (14:22):
He's wherever the beast lies.

Speaker 3 (14:24):
He is on the beast end of the spectrum, which
I suppose is, yes, is more towards Jalen. And then
it helps when right when that spark is extending his
defense to thirty feet right right, And and you're right, like,
we've got smart fans here in Central Florida. They see that,
and that is what they respond to. A duncan A
made three is fantastic, But dude, when when you poke

(14:45):
the ball away from a ball handler and then hit
the loose hit the ball the deck for a loose ball,
that that gets people fired up. That is Jalen Suggs
to a t. And we saw we saw that within
forty seconds of him on the.

Speaker 4 (14:58):
Floor the other night. That its spectacular, but it is.

Speaker 3 (15:01):
It's an interesting point because we talk so much about
the fans respinning to him and him the fans, he
means that much to his teammates as well. And it's
good on Goga for illustrating that. But I think you
can see that as well as games go on. And
certainly you can see that because you're in the uddle
and you stay it up looking personal.

Speaker 2 (15:18):
You know you can the impact that he has on
his teammates. It's just undeniable, and they feed off of him.
He feeds off them. He obviously feeds off that crowd,
but you know, it's it's amazing the impact, but it works.
Twofold sixteen minutes for Jalen Suggs on Opening Night. I
imagine those will start to ramp up. Don't know if
we'll see Jalen tomorrow, but wasn't that nice just to

(15:38):
see one name on the injury report just Mo Wagner
and we can't wait till that name has crossed off
the list as well. This magic team puts up one
hundred and twenty five points in its season opener. Jake,
with that one hundred and twenty five points, that is
the tenth highest scoring team in the NBA. Is this
unbelievable the scoring that we've seen out of the gates.
I know we had a couple of games last night.

(15:59):
I think Go Case has gone to double overtime in
their first two games.

Speaker 3 (16:02):
First the first team ever, first team ever played double
overtime in their first two games.

Speaker 2 (16:08):
Crazy, It's incredible, It's incredible. Shake Gildess Alexander a career
high twenty six free throws, fifty five points. I mean,
it's amazing.

Speaker 4 (16:14):
What he They're gonna take December off? She should take
December off. I mean, how am I supposed to make
a deep run again? And they keep playing double over?
My gosh, I're playing two months ago.

Speaker 2 (16:23):
And it's one game and some of these teams have
played two games like okay, see, but you know, the
leading scorer in the NBA is one hundred and thirty
eight points. You got Charlotte A one hundred and thirty six,
Indiana one hundred and thirty five. The scoring isn't going anywhere, Jake.
That's why this new style was so critical. It was
critical to revamp your offense. It was critical to bring
in Desmond Bane. It's critical to go offensive with your

(16:46):
first round draft pick ad Tias Jones, who steadies the
ship and gives you extra possessions. This is where the
league has been. But more than ever, it's not just
three point shooting. It's getting out and finding ways to score.

Speaker 4 (16:57):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (16:58):
And it's it's interesting because you see team teams that like,
we needed to make these adjustments. But I also think
you only get to the point where you want to
make those adjustments when you have the defensive backbone that
Jamal Moseley painstakingly.

Speaker 1 (17:12):
Right.

Speaker 2 (17:13):
Yes, some of these teams that are at the top
of the list, like Utah and exactly, you can't start
tell them because we probably not the same defense.

Speaker 4 (17:21):
Yeah, well, we're watching it.

Speaker 3 (17:22):
You know, we watched it for basically since we sort
of started our rebuild. We've watched other teams say, Okay,
we stink at defense, but we're gonna We're gonna go
g league on you. We're gonna score one forty and
they end up with twenty five wins at the end
of the season.

Speaker 4 (17:33):
You can't win.

Speaker 3 (17:36):
You gotta have both. I mean, defense wins championships. You've
been saying for five years now. Okay, but but but
you need buckets. You gotta do both well.

Speaker 2 (17:44):
Correct, No, I agree, And that's why that's the thing.
Defense wins championships. If you score enough, you know you go.
You can hold a team to forty two points. If
you score forty one, you got to You gotta be
able to score enough point. So you're making the transition.

Speaker 1 (17:57):
Now.

Speaker 2 (17:57):
The challenge will be getting back to the defensive to
allwarts that you were. And I looked at that game
against Miami. Yeah, you allowed one hundred and twenty one
points and the Miami Heat ended up shooting forty eight
percent from the floor. They knocked down twelve triples. You
followed them a lot, you put them to the line
twenty seven times, you turned it over fifteen times, But
a lot of that was good defense. Miami made tough shots. Yes,
Atlanta's gonna make tough shots. Tonight. We're gonna see Chicago.

(18:20):
They have guy Kobe White gets it going. Vuch had
twenty eight in his debut. They have guys that can
score as well. So it's a little misleading, is it not?
The one hundred and twenty one. I don't think. I
don't think this team is as far off defensively as
it may appear after allowing one hundred and twenty one points.

Speaker 3 (18:35):
No, especially because we talked about it a little bit yesterday.
But the big spat in the third quarter where your
offense went went quiet was because of turnovers. You had
six turnovers in the first half and seven in like
the first eight minutes of the of the third quarter.
And so I think there's I think there's a it's
almost a complimentary football. That's that's the big buzzword, right, Like,

(18:56):
there's there's a style that you want to get to
where you're not giving up too much on one end,
but certainly you're you're you're pushing to be a much
more explosive offensive team than you were last season.

Speaker 2 (19:08):
You know, I I look at this game tonight. You
got Dyson Daniels here. I want to get your thoughts
on this before we before we call it a show.
But uh, we had we had Terrence Ross here who
you worked with? He was part of the Orlando Magic
Audio Network last year. The nickname the Human Torch. I
thought that was as fun a nickname as I can remember.
Daryl Flash Armstrong, that was cool. That was contagious. The
Great Barrier Thief for Dyson Daniels right right, an Australian guy.

Speaker 1 (19:32):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (19:33):
That's led the league in steals last year three a
game threats unheard of. You're going back to like Alvin
robertson time three steals per game, a most improved player.
But that nickname is that? Is that about as clever
as good a nickname as there is.

Speaker 3 (19:46):
The great the number of deflections, I don't have it
in front of me, but he led paced the lead
by deflections by almost like double whoever was second?

Speaker 4 (19:53):
That is a fantastic.

Speaker 3 (19:54):
A lot of people don't know this, but when I
was at Ohio State, I was getting my journalism degree
and they told this in like my junior year, Hey,
you need to get a minor as well. And I
was like, okay, I like geography, I'll get I'll get
a geography man.

Speaker 4 (20:04):
So I have a minor in geography.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
Do you really put right?

Speaker 3 (20:08):
Burrier Thief combines like two of my all time favorite things,
which is random geography and random NBA players.

Speaker 4 (20:15):
I absolutely love it.

Speaker 3 (20:16):
Hook Line and Sinker one of my probably it's it's
almost as good as the Stifle Tower, which any time
anything we can anything, we can get geography in it.

Speaker 2 (20:27):
I'm down street close. That's pretty good too, Charles Barkley
car That's that's a good one. That's pretty good too.
That's gonna do it for this edition. To Magic Insiders,
we played tonight our upcoming games look ahead tomorrow night,
the Magic are back in action, a home and home
back to back. So we will have the Chicago Bulls,
Nick Vucevich, Kobe White in the building here tomorrow, and
we encourage you to be in the building for both

(20:48):
of them. Moments away from the pregame show, Magic Tonight
presented by Papa John's with Brandon Kravitz comes your way
in moments and then the Magic and the Atlanta Hawks
here tonight. We'll have it for you on ninety six
to nine the game. Have a great weekend, everybody,
