Magic Insiders is presented by International Diamond Center, your local

your hosts, Dante Marctelli and Jake Chapman, and.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Welcome every one of his Magic Insiders Dante, Marketelly, Jake
Chapman here on this Friday evening, our first week of
Magic Insiders, Jake coming to a close. How does that
feel right? We wait five months to have a radio
show back and we've already plowed through the first week
of Magic.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Insiders, it feels good. It feels a lot better when
you have basketball to talk about. I think we've exhausted
most of.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
The preseason and training camp storylines, so very much ready
for tonight and Sunday, big weekend of preseason basketball, getting
back at it, see if I can steer the ship
again and d it is the final voyage of the
SS Juice Box tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Okay, well, build fill everybody in right the final Voyag's right, Levy,
Remind everybody what you've been doing. And for those that
don't know, you're just joining us. You're about an hour
away from the Magic in the Philadelphia seventy six ers.
It'll be coming your way right here on ninety six
to nine. In the game, the Magic will play their
second preseason game. The Sixers will play their third. They
are zero and two coming into this one. The Magic
(01:53):
are one and Oh Jake will get you all caught
up everything you need to know about VJ. Edgecombe and
Johnny Room and everybody for tonight, because you got to
see a heavy dose of those guys for sure, and
we're gonna get into our GM survey. But yeah, this
is but this will be your final broadcast from what
has been your home for the last two seasons.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
Yep, for we've been we've been broadcasting the way last
three seasons. Actually, the away games off of monitors down
at the Kia Center. It was about as good as
it could be, not actually being in the arena. The
technical setup that we had, I like to think we
did a good job of summoning the energy. And that's
what we call it, the juice Box. Got to pull
the juice from somewhere. Yes, we had at the fun
in the in that studio. Certainly, I'm excited to get
(02:35):
out and hit the road, but tonight not traveling for
this game. Obviously I'm not in Philadelphia right now, So
we will do one last broadcast off the monitors the
way we've been doing it the last couple of years.
And uh, and then we're gonna we're gonna close up
shop on the Juice Box. We're gonna repurpose that room
something way more valuable than than radio storage. So excited
to get after it tonight, but then also excited for
(02:57):
what's next for the Magic Audio Network.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Well, there's no question it's going to be bittersweet. It's
going to be bittersweet. For you, but I think you'd
be happy to be on the road traveling and calling
games from location once the regular season starts, and also
obviously home games, you're out at the perch. So the
Magic visit the Philadelphia seventy six ers. This will be
the final road game of the preseason. Then the Magic
will come home tonight after this game, and then you
(03:20):
don't leave again until what the twenty sixth, twenty seventh,
when you head out for a long five day road trip.
So you get a chance to be home for a
couple of weeks, get a few good practices in the
regular season starts on the twenty second, a home game
here against the Miami Heat. We're going to see the
Miami Heat at home in the preseason on Sunday, So
as you look at it, I want to spend the
second segment finishing up the GM survey because one of
(03:44):
those topics that they talked about was the Philadelphia seventy
six ers here tonight. We can get into that here
in the second segment. But this is preseason game number
two for the Orlando Magic. They win the first one,
come back in thrilling fashion in their first preseason in
the first preseason bat basketball game on the road in
Puerto Rico against Miami. So now you have preseason game
(04:04):
number two. We would imagine we're going to get Fronz Wagner.
It'll be our first look at Franz in this one.
We'll see what the rotations look like here in about
an hour or so when they actually play. But a
chance to look at Franz Vagner, a chance to look
at some more of these rotations that coach Moseley will have.
We've heard a lot about the rookies, Jace Richardson and
Noa Penda and their contributions, what they've looked like. I
(04:26):
think we're getting closer to Jalen Suggs, but we don't
expect him to be available here tonight. And of course
we're still a ways off on Mo Wagner. But what
are some of the things that you're hoping to see
here tonight in preseason game number two Jake.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
Well Coach Moley mentioned yesterday he's really locked in on
conditioning right now. Right He talked about the importance of
being able to do it on both ends of the floor.
You and I talked about yesterday, and it's been a
theme of training camp, getting out and running on offense
and making things a little bit easier on yourself.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
But as we know, none of that happens without a
getting a stop or a miss on the defensive end.
Speaker 4 (04:57):
Generally, I don't think we're going to be a team
that pulls the ball out of the buck kid and
tries to push in that space. So but what I
read into that, Dante and of course Nick Nurse and
Jamal Moseley are doing the thing that Jamal does with
Eric Spolstra and whatever. Who knows who's gonna play tonight.
We don't know, well we don't. We won't see Joel
and Peter Paul George, that's for sure. We know we
won't see Jared McCain either, he's got a thumb. But
(05:19):
coach Moseley mentioning the conditioning, I mean, yeah, you're concerned
about the conditioning with the guys at the end of
the bench, but you're most concerned about your top ten
and their conditioning. And so it makes me think that
we are going to it's a little bit tonight and
get to see some of the primary members of the
Magic rotation, specifically Franz Wagner, as you mentioned, who didn't
play in Puerto Rico, so I like that obviously keeping
(05:40):
an eye on that. Does it look like they're they're
worn down? They had a big, long, hard scrimmage coach
Moseley mentioned on Wednesday against each other, so they are
able to kind of let out some of the juice
like that. And then and then exactly what you mentioned,
what does no Appenda and Jason Richardson look like in
their second preseason experience because obviously those guys Jet Howard's
and the other guys who it's a you know, kind
(06:02):
of a big year and trying to crack the rotation
and trying to be maybe the first in line when
there are openings as the season goes along. The two
two way guys are Landa Robinson and Jamal Kine. I
think we're pretty comfortable with what those guys bring. But
they're both young still what twenty five and twenty six
years old. Those guys are still improving, so they're not
proven commodities or finished products just yet.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
So it really is it's you know, guys nine through thirteen.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
I guess, as far as the rotation goes, how do
they take advantage of these opportunities? Because you don't get
that many in today's NBA preseason. You only get a
couple of games. You obviously are focused on getting everybody
ready to go for the real thing. So if you're
Jace Richardson, you did good on Saturday, you got to
do good again tonight and keep the wheels turning as
far as the coaching staff goes, and sort of make
(06:48):
it a difficult decision on them whether or not you're
able to crack the rotation sooner than later.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Well, that's what this is all about, is you're trying
to figure out minutes. You're trying to determine rotations. Right,
I still think there are some minutes that can be
had Silva, Right, Tristan de Silva is trying to show
what his spot in the rotation looks like. You could
argue he's looked as good, if not better than anybody
in training camp. Right, you could certainly make that in
in the preseason. Obviously, Franz and Polo are exceptional, and
(07:15):
Desmond Bane, but I think Wendll, I think Tristan. I
think these guys have looked have looked phenomenal. So you're
trying to figure that out. What does what do the
minutes look like, you know, for Jace Richardson and no
apenda and oh by the way, oh by, you know,
how many minutes will you get from Gogabtase? But oh
by the way, Jet Howard seems to have had himself
a solid offseason, had a great first preseason game. And
(07:37):
this is a guy that's saying, I want to, I
want to I want to defend better so I can
earn some minutes on the fore. I mean, how big
is this year for Jet Howard? So these are all
the things we're trying to evaluate. Used to be eight
games in the preseason. We're trying to evaluate now in
four and really probably in two because you're gonna sit
everybody for that final preseason game, right, so you're trying
(07:57):
to and then who knows what it looks like here
here tomorrow was more guys or on Sundays, more guys
continue to get a rest, So you're still trying to
figure out all those position battles for the Philadelphia seventy
six ers. You're not going to see Paul George, you're
not going to see Joel Embiid. And there was a
question on the GM survey which John Showman does a
great job for NBA dot Com. It's a fantast I
mean with this GM survey. But the question was the
(08:21):
number one team that we know the least about, right,
it could be we have no idea what this team
is going to look like?
Speaker 4 (08:26):
Right, Like?
Speaker 2 (08:26):
The biggest discrepancy in the NBA, and by far the
number one team was the Philadelphia seventy six Ers. The
toughest to predict was how he worded it at forty
seven percent, and the next closest was Dallas Golden State
Houston Club. There was a bunch of teams at seven percent,
but running away with it was this Philadelphia seventy six
ers team.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
And you can see why, right, What does Jared McCain
look like?
Speaker 2 (08:46):
When is he going to be a full go after
his ACL and and now his recent injury should be
back soon. Tyrese Max, who was in and out of
the lineup vj Edgecomb looks I mean, it looks really
good here in the preseason so far. But if we
don't know what embid, we don't know what Paul George
looks like. So that is pretty accurate, right This this
team that we're gonna play tonight, we have no idea
that I would not shock me if they win sixty games.
(09:07):
It wouldn't shock me if they win sixteen.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
Same.
Speaker 4 (09:10):
I mean, I think I'd be a little shocked if
they won sixteen games. Mainly said correct, correct, mainly because
but they won to last year they won Twittervie injuries.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
It would be because of injuries again yet alone widespread injuries.
They've just dealt with so many of them.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
They had a top six protected pick last year and
somehow were able to keep that dead pick.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
That's why VJ. Edgecombe is a seventy six er.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
I mean a year ago, I was saying, I think
the Sixers can win the championship, like I really thought,
sure it was and I wasn't crazy, but a lot
of people were like, okay, well let me see it first.
And those people were obviously right. There's something to that
contract year Paul George thing isn't there because because he
was a model of consistency for the last two seasons
that he was a Los Ange slipper, he was on
(09:53):
the floor and producing and then bam, last year happened
and we don't know what that's going to look like.
But you're right, I mean, if you just assemble the
names and you do the thing on paper. I think
Nick Nurse is a great coach. It hasn't worked with
the non raptor. You know, there's a whole sort of
I'm in Toronto and putting him with a veteran bunch,
(10:13):
and especially a veteran bunch that needs to, you know,
sort of manage their load as the season goes hadn't worked.
And MAXI for as great as he was last year,
I mean he scored over twenty six points a game,
he was less efficient than he was the year before,
and so nothing really worked and developed, you know, with
the possible exception of Quentin Grime starring in meaningless gapes
at the end of the year last year for the
(10:35):
Philadelphia seventy six ers.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
And they did get that deal done.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
He'll be back. But you're right, that's a great point.
That's a great point with you know, if it wasn't
for him, they might not have gotten even close to
twenty four wins exactly.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
They sort of struck goal, but it was it was
just a year to forget for everybody.
Speaker 4 (10:49):
And the scary part if you're a Sixers fan is
there is not necessarily like a date where Okay, we're
gonna get Joel mb back and he's gonna be fine. Like,
the dude is in his thirties, he's been injured his
entire career. When healthy, he's one of the best players
in the world. But as the biggest asterisk you can
even ask for. And they're already talking, have you go,
digging deep into the Philadelphia message boards and that stuff.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
Who they want Jannis?
Speaker 4 (11:13):
I mean, they're ready to trade Maxi for Giannis and
try Yannis, Paul George and Joel Embiid, which is the
I just can't even wrap my head around what that
would look like, spacing wise and all of those things.
But look, it's just a complete wild card of an organization.
They've got new ownership in it's great or ownership from
(11:33):
from all accounts. But when Daryl Morey is running the show,
you just never know ect.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
You know, with that group, you never know but that
but that's those are immovable contracts you cannot move, like right,
so you you would be.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
Mas is the only thing you can move, and that
he's the only one I want to hold.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
On to, right, And Jared McCain did want Jared McCain too,
you'd have to move on from him. That guy was
going to be the runaway rookie of the year, there's
no question about it. But those are the two most
valuable pieces. You cannot move Paul George. You can Paul George. Recently,
he said he's come to the conclude, he's come to
grips with the term that he's never going to be
the Paul George of old. Right, So that's comforting for six.
He's still gonna be a good player or whatever. He's
(12:10):
still gonna be a good player. But you got your
saddled with that. For another Oh goodness, never quite gonna
be the same. Podcast is doing numbers though the podcast
is joy real quickly and d I mean the Jared
McCain thing.
Speaker 4 (12:21):
You're right, like, he only played twenty three games last year,
but he was we saw him up close to personal early.
Oh my god, this dude to the players, Uh, he's
a player, but I mean he's got a thumb injury
that just popped up last week. He comes back from
the meniscus. Now he's got a thumb and it's like
a UCL tearor it's not like a jam dumb absolutely,
and so they're gonna reevaluate him in a month. I mean,
it could be Thanksgiving by the time we see that guy.
(12:42):
It's it's insane. I mean we we kind of laugh
about it a little bit because as you get the
veteran contracts and you try to make a move like
Philadelphia did, this is the risk that you run signing
thirty year olds to multi year Yeah, it's wind a
million dollar contracts.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
Sometimes this happens, but there is some really really bad
luck going wrong.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
When you're talking about Jared mcare is now I really
is second year with another injury.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
No, you're exactly right. But you're ready, You're studied, you're ready.
You're gonna get a heavy dose of Hunter Sallas Imani
Bates Mountain.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
Hunter Sallas and the other guy, Saint Thomas. They played,
which is lovely.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
I've been to Saint Thomas. Beautiful.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
They played basketball together.
Speaker 4 (13:22):
They went to the same high school in Omaha, Nebraska, Nebraska,
and you're good, Come on, come on, Nebraska had high
school team.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
There's like two players that are on a preseason roster
for the section. Not crazy, that is crazy. That is
good stuff. Right. You'll hear plenty of that and more
on the broadcast. Ten night, Jeff Turner and Jake Chapman.
They'll get you ready for the Magic in the Philadelphia
seventy six Is that Broadway broadcast coming your way in
less than an hour seven o'clock Right here on ninety
(13:52):
six nine in the game and all new Magic license
plate is here. Show your magic pride with this sleek,
all black plate featuring the bold new logo. Best of all,
a portion of the proceeds benefit the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation.
Visit your local Motor Vehicle office or learn more at
OMYF dot org. We will close out the gm survey
which was done by John Schumann of NBA dot com.
(14:12):
And oh, by the way, another poll that was put
together by Kelvin Kevin Pelton the ESPN. Where to the
Magic rank in that one? We'll have your answer when
we return to Magic Insigners in a moment. Welcome back
everyone in his Magic Insigners presented by International Diamond Center
of Dote Marcitelli. He's Jake Chavin and he'll be on
(14:32):
the call tonight at his first game of the preseason,
and he will be saying bidding add to the juice box.
They're at KEYA Center. The final broadcast on the road.
That's because Jake will be traveling to all road games,
but him and Jeff.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
Turner will have the broadcast seven o'clock.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
Right here on ninety six to nine, a game the
Magic and the Sixers, six Ers zero and two, the
Magic one and oh. This will be the final road
game of the preseason. And then they'll have two home
games which we will televise no television tonight locally on
FanDuel's network, but it will be NBA TV. It will
be televised in Philadelphia, but your only local broadcast will
be right here on ninety six to nine in the game,
(15:08):
and you'll get to hear Jake Chapman. And then we'll
have two televised broadcasts for the preseason on the twelfth
and the sixteenth. But Jake Chapman will have it all
for you all the way through right here on ninety
six to nine, a game all season long. Okay, we're
going to close out the GM survey here in just
a moment, But before we do that, how about this
poll that just came out. It is a model put
(15:29):
together by Kevin Pelton of ESPN dot com. He's always
had the models, He's always throwing the models at us.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
He does.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
He has a scheme and a model, and a system
and a ranking and an algorithm that comes up with
win projections for all thirty teams in the NBA. Okay
projected wins number one in the Eastern Conference the Cleveland
Cavaliers at fifty point one, right. So I don't know
how you get the point, but this point one fifty
point one wins for the Cleveland Cavaliers, which most models,
(15:58):
most algorithms, ranking that you look at has the Cleveland
Cavaliers at number one, right. Number two usually has the
New York Knicks. That is who everybody has in the
Eastern Conference. The number two seed, Kevin Pelton ESPN dot
com has the Orlando Magic at forty nine point nine.
If my math is correct, that's two tenths of a
(16:19):
percentage point behind the Cleveland Cavaliers, and it's in a
full two wins ahead of the New York Knicks, who
has projected at forty seven. So he has a whole model,
an algorithm. It all comes up to the addition of
Desmond Bane ESPN bet. You know you can look at it.
We don't do that because we have hard rock bet.
But you know, there's different models and things that people
(16:39):
look at. They have it for fifty one and a
half wins, and then you have Vegas has this magic
team over fifty wins.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
But what do you think of that?
Speaker 2 (16:47):
So there you go, that's the first model that I've
seen that has there. There's a lot of people that
have predicted they the magic could come out of the East.
That's the first model I've seen on paper that has
the magic. Second in the East, Jake, Yeah, I love that.
Speaker 4 (17:00):
And and like you said, not just second in the East,
but if you're only point two, you know, basically right
exactly you're talking about. You know, I think we played
the Caps three times this year, right, we go up
there twice and we have them once. Here you're talking
about those games being very, very important. You know, every
time you see Cleveland or New York or any of
the rest of the teams in the Eastern Conference, Detroit,
(17:22):
you got to lock in on those. We've got a
couple of those Detroit games early on in the season,
and so you know, we talked about how important early
season games are. When all is said and done, the
games in November just as important as the games in March.
Speaker 3 (17:34):
And April.
Speaker 4 (17:35):
But certainly you gotta lock in on the rest of
the cream of the crop of the Eastern Conference. Every
time you lock up with those guys. You know, Kevin
Telton knows his stuff. We've been reasoning it for a
long time. And so those numbers are I think in
line with what the prognosticators in Las Vegas are saying,
with what the ESPN BET and hard Rock and everybody has.
(17:57):
You're right about fifty wins, and so you're talking about,
you know, a couple jumpers here, a couple turnovers here,
and some of those big games against the rest of
the Eastern Conference could make the difference of being the
top seed or the second seed, could make the difference
between third or fourth, and as we saw a couple
of years ago, could make the difference between being fourth
and fifth.
Speaker 3 (18:16):
And that can be a very very big difference. Oh yeah,
ground of the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
Yeah, you're talking about hosting it, don't we know that
from two years ago against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Okay, real
quick to kind of close this up, and again we
went through the GM survey yesterday. You can get all
previous shows, Magic Insiders, wherever you get your podcasts, so
they will be posted right after this airs. It will
be posted. We try to get them up every day
as soon as possible, so wherever you get your podcasts,
you can certainly find that. But again, there were a
(18:42):
lot of Orlando Magic mentions all throughout this GM survey.
All thirty gms were pulled here throughout this one. One
that caught my eye too, which it will fly through
these j because we've only got a minute, minute and
a half left.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
Which team is the most fun to watch in the NBA?
Speaker 2 (18:55):
Number one Denver Nuggets ok see both tied to twenty
seven percent, also receiving votes at the Orland No Magic number.
Last year it was Indiana at thirty seven percent. They
were the favorites.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
Who's the Lee bud? Did they ask that question? I
would like to know that.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
Would you like to go the other way and find
out what that is? But I want to magic getting
some love there for the most fun teams to watch?
Speaker 4 (19:15):
Well, young teams are fun. Young emerging stars are fun,
and I also think people really appreciate it, like the
defensive intensity that coach Mosley is able to get out
of these guys.
Speaker 3 (19:26):
But yeah, watching Paulo and Franz.
Speaker 4 (19:27):
They just have like esthetically pleasing games, whether it's Pollow
in the mid range breaking guys down or Franz euro Step.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
You're real hoopers love watching those two guys.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
Yes, no, they certainly do. And then it said which
young corp is the most promising, the most promising young
corps here in the NBA? Number one, ok see fifty percent. No,
by the way, OKAC has thirteen draft picks in the
next seven years. Thirteen first round draft picks in the
next seven years. I mean, if OKAC is bothering you
now you just wait, I mean that team isn't going anywhere,
(19:57):
is And the number of first round picks for teams
that are struggling that that are owed to Oka se
is mind blowing right now, So just keep an eye
on that. But the last one promising young court, it's
okayc number one, San Antonio number two. But fifth was
Orlando Magic right there, and you can see why with
our promising young core.
Speaker 3 (20:15):
I think we should be a little bit higher than that.
To be honest with you, I would agree with you.
Speaker 2 (20:19):
And and the last one, which player is the best
at moving without the basketball? Number one far and away
Steph Curry ninety percent, and then you just have players
receiving votes. There's three of them. One Desmond Bain, that's
what we're talking about. Watch him tonight when Jake has
the broadcast, listen right here on ninety six to nine
the game. But we think about the shooting, the passing,
all this moving without the basketball is the skill and
(20:39):
he's one of the best in the NBA at that.
Speaker 3 (20:41):
And he has been and that's why that's why you
mortgage the future for this guy.
Speaker 4 (20:46):
There were there have been opportunities, and there's been talk
the last couple of prese the last couple off seasons
of making a move like that, and Dante, you and
I are both so overjoyed that we didn't make any
flowse moves. I mean, the guy that should we should
be playing tonight was one of these.
Speaker 3 (21:00):
Right.
Speaker 4 (21:00):
Everybody arted us to go all in last year for
Paul George and I got news for you if you
did that. Desmond band is not a member of our
team this year, and who knows what last season would
have low left so patients the last few years it
got difficult at times, but big shout out to Jeff
Weltman for Desmond Bang being a member of our team
right now.
Speaker 3 (21:20):
Build it right, not fast.
Speaker 2 (21:21):
That's what Jeff did in this magic team, proof in
the porting, but you gotta put it. It's all got
to come together. It looks great on paper, but we're
expecting it all to jail very quickly here on the
floor as well. Preseason game number two with Jake Chabman
and Jeff Turner comes your way at seven o'clock right
here on ninety six to nine of the game. Have
a great weekend, everybody. We'll be back on Monday to
recap tonight's game and the game on Sunday against the
(21:42):
Miami Heat. We'll talk to you then
