(01:34):
play ninety six to nine in the game, play the
Magic Game here in Central Florida. We encourage you to
do that, and you can watch it on FanDuel all
season long, and that opening week is coming. October twenty
second is our home opener. Jake. We're finally here. There
are three undefeated teams in the preseason, and the Orlando
Magic are one of them. The New Orleans Pelicans are
two to one, and I always think of our good
(01:55):
friend Richie Alabado, right, and I know you know where
I'm going right now that you have to remember the
context for this was this was when there were eight
preseason games, right, So I don't think it still applies
to this Orlando Magic team tonight. But he always said famously,
what in the preseason, you don't want to win them
all and you don't want to lose them all, don't
(02:16):
I think it's different when it's four compared to eight. Correct,
absolutely well, four and no.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
I mean it just feels like a smooth, smooth trip
of the preseason.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Eight.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
No, that's all. That's that is something to write all about.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
And obviously the point with coach and I love that,
I'll never forget it. And it's I think that sort
of kind of pervades the entire thought process of being
a coach is you never want to get too high
or too low. You don't want your team to think
they're an eight to no team.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
Or in a yes, yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
Need to approach every game with some sort of level head.
And I think Jamal Mosley has been really good at that.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
So you win this game tonight. I don't think we're
heading into Wednesday thinking we got thinking we got this
thing all wrapped up because no, no, no, he's not
worried about.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
That, especially for a team that has not you know,
that has expectations to go a lot deeper this year
and further into the postseason than they have in years past.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
But I don't know.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
I was just thinking about it yesterday and the day
before we were talking about Miami.
Speaker 4 (03:14):
If they go oh in six in the preseason day,
that's different depth going in six, but not us going
for That's exactly right.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
We'll pick and choose what we wanted to me. But
I do think it applied to the eight games as
opposed to the four, because I don't think there's anything
wrong with going four and on. That'll be the goal tonight.
You should want to win every game. And the good
news coming into this one, everybody available except obviously for
Jalen Suggs and Movogner. We know we're still we're still
kind of waiting on Jalen we Man. We hope and
prayed that he is soon h and close. We know
(03:44):
Mobogner is still a little bit off. But those two
not available. Everybody else did? You didn't know how they
would play this. You didn't see Paula ban Carol or
Desmond Bane in the game on Sunday, So you wondered
who might be available tonight. They are all available and
we are expecting them to play and start. Badge kep
six players and double figures in the preseason again, the
Magic three and er Wendell Carter Juvenior leading the way
(04:04):
fourteen points per game and seven rebounds for Wendal Franz
Wagner second at twelve and a half, and then Jase
Richardson and Tristan to Silva right at eleven point seven.
You got Jet Howard and Polo Bancero with ten. I
would imagine that this and then we'll take a look
here here in a few moments at the New Orleans Pelicans,
because I do think this game means a lot more
to a team like New Orleans, who finally has everybody
(04:26):
healthy and they're trying to go through the steps here.
But this this Magic team, I imagine Jake, with opening
night six days away, will approach tonight very similar to
a regular season game. Rotations, players, minutes, that sort of thing.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Uh, yeah, I think so. It feels like a dressed rehearsal.
I think that's the way we're doing on RORA. We're
doing Yeah, exactly doing eron I with pre and post,
anxious to get Brandon back in the mix and do
a full broadcast. I think it's I think when you
do four preseason games, one of the reasons that that
change has happened is because there's no practice time in
the regular season anymore, or at least at the very least.
(05:01):
If you ask Jamal Mosley, he would much rather, you know,
spend the time rather than traveling and playing six or
eight preseason games, He'd rather spend four or play four
preseason games, spend that time practicing and getting work done.
And so I think tonight you want to see. Look,
if we had come into today and found out that
it was going to be similar to the playing time
(05:23):
in rotations that we saw earlier in the preseason, I wouldn't.
Speaker 4 (05:25):
Have been shocked. You understand that as well.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
But I think if you're of I think if you're
a veteran, veteran TMD, then then you do sort of
look at it like, Okay, let's just get through it.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
We're trying to get to January, February and beyond.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
We still have not arrived yet, and we still have
a very young roster, and so I think there's still
a whole lot of work to be done. When you
make a change to the starting lineup, there's still some
some chemistry that needs to be ironed out, and you
don't want to have to be doing that on the
fly when the games count. So I think there is
still some work to be done. And then look, you
get a whole bunch of practice time again before next Wednesday.
(05:59):
So sure Coach Mosley's places with that well.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
And the other part about playing six or eight preseason
games is there's travel involved, and obviously that's not taxing,
but you're you're not getting you're not getting to have
that practice time in your building. Yes, you're getting more games,
and you're theoretically getting an opportunity to go go get
more of a burn against players that aren't your own
and NBA talent, But if you're playing eight games and
six of those you're you're not going against the starters,
(06:23):
I don't know how much that's helping you anyway, and
you're not playing your starters. The thing with Miami is
some of the three or four guys that didn't even travel,
they din'd even make it a trip to Orlando and
Atlanta on a back to back and so we'll just
we'll just monitor that situation the entire year. But I
think it's good for this magic team here tonight. Treat
it like a dress rehearsal, at least for the first half.
You know, I know fans are excited to get their
(06:44):
first look at Desmond Bane Pamo Banco, and we'll see
what all that looks like. But again, your leading score,
and you know there are some rotation pieces. You know,
you love this about Wendell. You're not worried whatsoever about
Polo and Fronds. They're gonna be ready for the start
of the season. And next week, once we get ready
for the start of the suit, we're gonna be heavy
on Pollow and Frowns and what they've done and how
they're gonna lead this team. We're kind of getting you
(07:06):
caught up on on kind of the other guys that
are battling for roster spots and and really parts of
the rotation here this week. But you're still trying to
figure that out. I would think Jake, tonight, you still
if you're trying to decide between who's gonna get extra minutes,
Is it gonna be Jase or Jet Is it gonna
be you know, who's gonna be the backup point guard.
Who's gonna be you know, if we don't have Jalen
(07:28):
Suggs on opening night, who's the other guard that's a
part of the rotation. Who are guys that are gonna
make their way? Is there possible possibly an opportunity for
a noapendo or a two way player to if you
this is your last chance to impress Coach Mosley in
a game setting tonight. That's meaningful for a lot of
these guys.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
Absolutely, because as much as we have a sense of
what it's gonna look like the top five, six, seven guys,
especially if Jalen is healthy, and when Jalen is healthy,
there you know, there are absolutely still minutes in spots
up for grabs at the next point of the roster,
spots you know, eight through twelve or something like that.
I don't think that, you know, when you're not a
(08:08):
championship team, that stuff is not set in stone. Coach
Boseley is going to dance with Hooprunga as we do, right,
all right, it's always his approach. That's his approach in game.
And if somebody's playing well in you know, twenty minutes
a night. He's not going to mess with that if
the team's winning. I think about Anthony Black and the
way he's played in the previo, Yes, yes, yes, what
could he look like potentially in the starting lineup if
(08:31):
Jalen Stones isn't available, or.
Speaker 4 (08:33):
Potentially you know, leading that secondary unit.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
I just think there's still a lot of questions as
far as the rotation and as far as playing time
goes that. You know, I don't know if tonight is
necessarily going to change somebody's mind, but it could steer
you in one direction for sure.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
All Right, ready to overreact. You want to have a nice,
fun overreaction. Let's do it right, right. Wendell Carr the
best when it's the best preseason of Wendell Carter Junior's career.
It is the best preseason training camp of Wendell Carter
Junior's career. And again that is not an overreaction, that's
just a fact. But let's overreact to the three games
that he's had. I think that's because to me, we're
(09:09):
watching this closely. To me, it means so much to
this team. Fourteen points per game, that's the most he's
scored in the preseason. The next closest was twelve and
a half in the twenty one to twenty two season.
So this year he's playing sixteen minutes a game in
the preseason. That year he was at twenty six. So
in ten fewer minutes, he has surpassed the highest points
per game total of his preseason career three games, fourteen points.
(09:32):
Field goal percentage sixty five percent from the floor this year,
that is the highest of his preseason career. Three point
percentage sixty percent from beyond the arc, that is the
highest of his career. Rebounds per game, this is a
little bit of a dip, seven point three, one of
his best in recent history. His best overall was eight
point eight. But again, ten more minutes per game allowed
(09:53):
him to do that. So from Wendell Carter Junior, you
look at what he's done to turnovers, just over one
that's middle of the pack for his preseason career, and
his second most blocks per game in the preseason. And oh,
by the way, it's one of the fewest minutes. It
is the fewest minutes per game that he's played in
the preseason. And this is you know, you're you're talking
about preseason number one, two, three, four, five, six, seven
(10:16):
eight for Wendell Carter Junior. So to me, let's overreact.
Let's get excited about that. The backbone of your defense,
the big fella in the middle, is having, by all accounts,
far surpassed all of our expectations, at least to this point.
All Right, a couple of things.
Speaker 4 (10:31):
First, I'm gonna use your favorite words.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
So if we take those numbers and we extrapolate them out,
and then I'm gonna anger Jeff Perger and I'm gonna say,
let's do the per thirty six.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
Right, Well, yeah, he loves that, he loves that.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
The bottom line is, you know, it's yes, it's it's
preseason and it's small dosage. But Wendell's not you know,
he's not putting up these these solid numbers against other
teams backups and third strings. Right, it's only been it's
been a small sample size, but that's because it's been
at the beginning of games throughout the preseason. One thing
that I was looking at, right, he's got I think
(11:07):
twenty two total rebounds through three games.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
Eleven of those are on the offensive end.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
So in three games now, with playing what fifteen minutes
a night he's getting drabbing four offensive rebounds. He's about
a two offensive rebounded guy player, and then earlier in
his career, I think there are a couple of seasons
in Chicago when he grabbed three. If he can get
up around three offensive rebounds a night, which is, you know, towards.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
The top of the top ten.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
Or whatever in the league usually year in and year out,
that's gonna make such a big difference for this team.
He's a great rebounder. Can he really hang his hat
on offensive rebounding on the offensive side of the ball,
and you know he's our best offensive rebounder, but can
he be even better? Can he be one of the
premier offensive rebounders in the league. Hopefully there aren't as
many opportunities for offensive rebounds as there worlds year, we're
(11:55):
shooting the ball a little bit better, I do think
crashing glass a little bit, and man, we can only
hold that end, league, can only hope. I do think
that can help out this offense even a little bit more.
We know how important he is setting screens, we know
how important he is doing the dirty work, but getting
some junk points and some of those offensive boards spraying
out for another three.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
What help this team quite a bit.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
Preseason leader in offensive rebounds to this point, and this
is through five games. Kalel Ware with fifteen four games,
Luke Cornett thirteen three games, Goga Bitase with twelve oo right,
three games, Wendell Carter Junior with eleven. So you have
two players in the top four and they've only played
three games. That is a great point, Jake, I like
(12:37):
that those offensive rebound numbers looking very good and what
looks like Wendell Carter Junior and Goga Batase continue to
be two of the best in that category. Basketball is back,
and it all starts at Kia Center. Keptch some Magic's
opening week with games on October twenty second, twenty fourth,
and twenty fifth against the Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks, and
Chicago Bulls. Experience the Magic with new jerseys and new
(12:58):
court and action packed hoops. At your tickets for these
exciting matchups now at Orlandomagic dot com. We're back with

And Jay, I'm just gonna start by saying this, and
you know we've run down the Magic and what this
means tonight, and you're approaching tonight as a dress rehearsal.
I don't know if the preseason means more to any
team in the NBA than these New Orleans Pelicans with
the injuries that they have had right the last several years,
(14:17):
and especially last year. Last year, the Pelicans had eighteen
players who played less than fifty games. Eighteen players played
less than fifty games. You got exactly fifty from Javonte Green.
I don't know exactly what they expected from him going
into the season, but I don't think it was fifty
games you got right, you had, and you only had
(14:37):
seven players that played fifty or more. Remember Brandon Ingram
didn't play the entire season. One of the seven was
Javonte Green. Another one was Jeremiah Robinson Earl, who played
sixty six games. And your leader in games played was
Eve Measi with seventy three. The rookie, right, they got
all rookie considerations and accreditations. He had a terrific rookie Campa.
(15:00):
There was a stretch where I thought he might be
the rookie of the year with the way he started.
Then you're looking at CJ. McCollum, Jose Albarado, Jordan Hawkins,
Trey Murphy. They have not been healthy. They have not
been healthy whatsoever here in the last several years. They
are healthy. Now we are expecting everyone to play for
New Orleans tonight as well.
Speaker 4 (15:19):
Yeah, I mean Jeremiah Robinson Earl.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
They were so pleased with his service to the organization
they let him sign a perny gambler with the Dallas Mavericks.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
I wout no interest in bringing them back. You're exactly right.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
It's a throwaway year. They won almost fifty games, I
believe forty nine games the year prior. I mean that
was they had. I don't know about championship aspirations heading
into last season, but there that was a complete disaster
from start to finish. And obviously you mentioned health like
that's the whole thing. And anytimes Zion is at the
center of the conversation, it's.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
Going to be both health and Yeah, thirty games, thirty
games for Zion last year. But in those thirty games,
it's not like you question his ability when he's out there.
When he's out there, he's a dominant as there is
twenty four points per game, seven rebounds, five assists.
Speaker 3 (16:04):
And by all indications and everything you see, he's in
a good place. They have him in a good place.
It seems like the organization's relationship with them is good.
And maybe that's Joe Dumars. I think if you need
smooth things like that over there are few better people
to hire.
Speaker 4 (16:19):
As your POBO than Joe Dumars.
Speaker 3 (16:22):
He understands and I think he'll be able to rectify
that relationship with Zion. You got a head coach there
who is perhaps on his last legs in Willegreen.
Speaker 4 (16:32):
I mean, they think.
Speaker 2 (16:33):
That they have a chef.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
Especially they made moves for Kevon Looney, who of course
is not healthy. But you're bringing Jordan Poole. They obviously
made very noteworthy moves in the draft. They sacrificed the
future for the two guys Jeremiah Fears and Queen who
they had their eyes on.
Speaker 4 (16:48):
So Joe Dumarts came in.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
He left his stamp immediately, And you're right, I think
proving that you're healthy is huge for that organization. But
if they get off to like a five and twenty start,
I think there's gonna be changed. Is on the horizon
there could be that could be there are expectations there
that that don't to me fit in an organization that
just hired a new president of basketball operations. Like if
(17:11):
it feels like they're kind of split between two timelines
right now, it's gonna be interesting because they are a
very talented roster.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
Well you got you got Joe Dumars captaining the ship
right now. And Joe Dumars is a no nonsense, uh
type of guy. And I'm not saying David David Griffin isn't.
You might have more experience with him from his time
in Cleveland than I would, but uh, you know, David
Griffin is a guy that, whether it's his fault or not,
Zion Williamson was not in great shape when David Griffin
(17:37):
was at the Helm, and it took Joe Dumars a
couple of months. And you see what Zion looks like.
I mean, he is slim and trim and mean. And
hopefully that guy could play an entire season because he's
an All Star. He's all NBA with the numbers that
he puts up. If he can stay healthy for an
entire year, you add, looney, are you a little bit interested?
Speaker 4 (17:53):
Though?
Speaker 2 (17:53):
Sadiq Bay is another name that's going to be a
part of this as well. And in Jeremiah Fears, as
you mentioned, one of the better players here in the preset.
But he's healthy. Herb Jones is healthy, right, didn't see
him a whole lot last year. Trey Murphy is healthy.
Jordan Hawkins looks good. Are you at all interested to
see how this Jordan Poole thing is going to work
out into Orleans?
Speaker 3 (18:12):
Of course, of course I'm fascinating because because the Joe
thing is interesting.
Speaker 4 (18:17):
At first off, I did not cross pass with David
Griffin at all.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (18:19):
I don't really know much about what it's like dealing
within day to day. When I got to Detroit, Joe
had just left. But I worked with a whole bunch
of people who were in go Numberg's front office, and
so at the very least I can tell you that, yes,
he's no nonsense. Yes he's an old school bad bully
type guy, and he just came from the league where
he was you know, dull one out plenty smitten things.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
Like that's right too, that's right.
Speaker 3 (18:41):
But he also is one of those guys that, because
of his resume, he commands respect and he gets it
pretty easily, And I.
Speaker 4 (18:48):
Think he's I think he's easy. He's easy.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
It's to play for, like he lays out what he
expects and if you do that, then there's no issues.
Speaker 4 (18:56):
Like it's it's not one of these things.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
Where there's you know, double talk going on and he
said this to this and it's it's straightforward so much
so that Rashid Wallace was was able to make was able.
Speaker 4 (19:08):
To to to kind of put it all yeah, yes, exactly.
Speaker 3 (19:11):
Yes, you know you got to think kind of some of
the best out of him. Yes, they absolutely got the
best out of him. So and and Rashid Wallace will
go to back for Joe Dumars any day. So I
think it can absolutely. I think he can rectify that
relationship with Zion, Like I think that's going to be okay,
I'm not sure what it looks like with the young players.
And then you know, you're right, there's a whole bunch
of like the guys who have been in the last
couple of years like this should be Zion's and Herb
(19:33):
Jones and Trey Murphy's team Alvarado even uh, when you
when you spend all that draft capital on Derreck Queen
and Jeremiah Fears. Those guys show ull thinking, hey, what
are the future? So what did that look like? Especially
early on in the season. I think it's gonna be
really interesting. Well that is, I don't think they're gonna
be a top five team in the Western Conference. I
don't see them clicking it all together just like that
(19:55):
right off rep.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
Well, and we're not sold that they're gonna be healthy.
That just history has shown that they old, but hopefully
they will. Hopefully it's a new season and a new
era for the New Orleans Pelicans, because you never want
injuries for anybody, but this team seems to have been
decimated by just about just as much as anybody not
the work feeling bad. I mean, we've dealt with our
own injuries for several years as well, so we certainly
understand that. But I know in New Orleans they've got
(20:17):
to be excited about what they're seeing, and we'll see
them tonight coming your way. In just a manner of moments,
we're going to have our first magic tonight of the season,
and we're excited about that. Brandon Kravitz will be on
board and then Jake Chapman will have the call at
seven o'clock right here on ninety six to nine. In
the game, we'll leave you with this Assist tracker as
part of the Gallagher Community assists. For each Magic assist
or in the twenty five to twenty six Gallagher will
(20:38):
donate ten dollars to Who We Play For, whose mission
is to eliminate preventable sudden cardiac death in the young
through affordable health screening, hard screenings, aed placement and advocacy initiatives,
raising awareness for starting cardiac arrest prevention. Seventy assists through
the preseason. You'll love how the ball is whipping around
through three games. I'd be seven hundred dollars if my
(20:59):
math is correct, all for a great cause.
Speaker 4 (21:01):
So that's job.
Speaker 2 (21:01):
Yeah, yeah, Magic tonight in a matter of moments, coming
right here on ninety six to nine a game and
at seven o'clock on FanDuel Sports Network. Have a great night.
Everyone will break it all down tomorrow for Magic Insiders
six o'clock right here, ninety six to nine a game,
