And welcome into Magic Insiders. Jake Javing Dante Marcitelli here
with you were presented by International Diamond Center Monday, October thirteenth.
Three preseason games in the Books, Three dubs in the Books,
by the way, the Magic Winners in Philadelphia on Friday
Night Final score that one one twenty eight to ninety eight.
First two preseason games or Ortlanto Magic were averaging one

(01:12):
hundred and twenty seven points. After those two, they knock
off the Miami Heat again yesterday at KIS. There are
only one hundred and twenty points on the board last
night at Kia Center. But the Magic, that high pace
offense looking pretty good. We talked about it last week
as we bring Dante Marcitelli in d Let's start in
Philadelphia on Friday. Look, I did the six Man Show.
Our buddies, the six Man Podcast. They do an outstanding job.

(01:34):
I hopped out with them last week and they asked
me about the pace and I said, foolishly, yeah, we
definitely want to push the pace. I'm not sure we're
going to be a team that's pulling the ball out
of the net and pushing pace off made baskets. It
happened about six times on Friday night in Philadelphia. It
was a very concerted effort, certainly to get up and
down even off of makes and boy, over the course

(01:55):
of four quarters, you just saw Philadelphia where down that
Magic offense. Don't know you're gonna be able to do
that for eighty two games during the regular season, but
I think you saw it in practice even more so
than in preseason. Game number one, push push, push, off,
makes off, misses off, turnovers, go go go, and the
Patrick's another one hundred and twenty eight points on Friday
in Philly.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Well, that seems to be the theme, right just to
get out and we saw that since day want in
a training camp.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
That was the idea everybody.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
The other thing you're hearing, Jake is conditioning, Right, We've
got to be able to be we got to be
able to be in our best shape on both ends
of the floor, offense and defense, and we're certainly seeing
some of that. But you're right, this pace thing and
magic went into that game last night top half in
the NBA and pace and then went into the game
last night fourth in offensive rating. When is the last
time we've seen that? So it certainly has been a

(02:44):
theme here in training camp and in the preseason to
make sure if you get extra possessions, to get out
and run take care of the basketball. But yeah, that
game in Philadelphia was something I know. You don't have
Joel Embiid, you don't have Paul George, and I even
have VJ.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Edgecomb.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
But the Magic have been sitting guys too, and you know,
listen there, our starters are kind of pacing themselves. We're
not seeing we're not seeing the magic that we're gonna
see when the regular season starts, which means they're gonna
kick it up even another not so I'm very excited
to see what this offense looks like. I think are
you know, we haven't been able to get out of

(03:18):
the bottom five with the league in offensive raiding in
quite some time, and I think this will be the
year that that happens.

Speaker 3 (03:24):
There for our offense will look a lot better and
our pace will be a lot quicker.

Speaker 4 (03:28):
Dante mentioned, I didn't see Paul Bancaro Desmond Bain yesterday.
It was a one twenty one oh four win over
the Miami Heat. Let's just do this. I'll get to
what my call of the game immediately. Call the game
is brought to my Glip from Ring Central. Rethink the
way you work with secure meetings and messaging on any
device with Glip by Ring Central head toglip dot com
to learn more. My call of the game is coach
mostly playing four preseason games like any normal sane person

(03:50):
would do as opposed to Eric Spolster and the Miami
Heat scheduling six preseason games every year. Oh my goodness,
and a back to backdeed, they're in Atlanta tonight.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
What are they?

Speaker 1 (04:01):
What?

Speaker 3 (04:01):
What is that?

Speaker 4 (04:02):
I had Jason Jackson, the radio play by play guy.
He's like, because he can. I mean, it's literally, you
cannot schedule any more preseason games than the number six
per the NBA. And Eric Spolster and pat Riley are like,
We're gonna use up every last bit of that. That's insane.
I had six preseason games in today's day, and ay,
it's nuts.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Well, and you're asking you you're talking about the same
organization that has its G League team and Sue False, right,
I mean that that's the right, That's for sure, that's
what you're talking about.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
Do you want to get to the NBA?

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Okay, you're gonna you're gonna have to slug it out
to Sue Fall for a few months before you make
your way up for for young guys in two way players,
which I can't wait to ask Jamal Kane and Orlando
Robinson about that time there, right, we will.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
I want to validate that.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
I want to see if that's true and provides a
little extra motivation. But hey, that's old school man Eric Spolstra.
And you know, rumors are reports are he's gonna take
over Team USA, and yeah, that that's the kind of
guy he is. That's the school that pat Riley came from, right,
So that's gonna play. Eric Spolster having that mentality is
gonna play well for pat Riley.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
There's no question about that. With the Godfather. But I
don't I know they didn't play anybody last night. I
know Tyler heroes hurt.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
I know Bam out of Bio didn't play, and they
shut everybody else down. Terry Rozier wasn't there, didn't even travel.
But I I feel like something's off this year with
the Miami Heat, and I just I just have a field.
They're always gonna be scrappy, They're always gonna play hard,
you know. Don't get me wrong.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
Eric Spolster is one of the best coaches in the NBA.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Uh and that's for a reason. He gets his guys
to play hard. But something to me, I just feel
like you can't keep doing that.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
I love the Norman Powell signing.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
I think he's gonna be fantastic, but but something tells
me it's gonna be a difficult year in Miami.

Speaker 3 (05:39):
I'll say that.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
They've played four preseason games and they've taken four preseason losses,
and as I mentioned again, tonight in Atlanta, and then
they'll finish up their preseason on Friday night in Memphis.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
You might be right.

Speaker 4 (05:48):
I have no idea what they're gonna look like because
their main players haven't played at all, and until Hero
comes back, I don't know what Hero and Powell will
look like together.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
I do.

Speaker 4 (05:57):
I do hesitate to count them out too much because
every time I think to Miami. Course, of course they
come back from the dead, but it's been what three
straight years they've been in the playing tournament. I mean,
it's it's a pretty far removed group from the glory
days of Jimmy running through the Eastern Conference. So be
interesting to see and of course we will see those
guys up close to personal for a third time. What

(06:17):
a two and a half week span coming up and
opening like night, and then's next Wednesday, the twenty second.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
I just feel like that Tyler Hero.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
You know, if it's supposed to be six to eight weeks,
if it's supposed to be a month or two, it's
probably gonna be three because you don't want to mess
with that.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
And they need him like they to provide scoring. They
need him.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
But khalel Ware is legit. He's gonna be the real deal.
Really like him be them out of Bio. So again there,
it's not gonna be easy Miami. The Miami Heat will
never ever be an easy win, that is for sure.
And they find this is Jamiir Young. They dust off
these guys that just make threes. It's unbelievable to me,
the guys that they find. But I just feel like,

(06:54):
how many years consecutively can you do that? And maybe
this would be a tough year where they have to
think about a reset at some point.

Speaker 4 (07:00):
You know, I was fired up to see Dame Danger
in the game because I I love that guy. It's
like a pro wrestler.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Oh, I know you were there was a lot, there
are a lot of guys on that roster. I know
you were fighting hard for Vlad Golden, but he never
got in the bed. Well I was hoping for some Vlad.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
No it never happened.

Speaker 4 (07:16):
No, never happened. All right, let's talk about our guys
a little bit. You mentioned Jace Richardson h what thirteen points,
nine points, thirteen points in his first three preseason games.
He's been pretty efficient. He just looks like he belongs
to He hasn't turned the ball over, he comes off it,
he's not dribbling the air out of the basketball. The
jumpers gorgeous. As Jeff was saying on Friday night, anytime

(07:37):
he got a lefty, it looks even better. I you know, I,
I think obviously we don't want to get out over
our skis with Jase. He's gonna have to claw his
way into playing time this season, and maybe he'll spend
some time with Osciola. But when you see a small guard,
the first thing is like, how sturdy is he? And
that was a word that Polo used to describe him

(07:59):
last week, thinking, Jimmy, you're thinking, you know, Lowry some
of the tryst Chris Paul Shorter reguards. Can you push
him around? Even nineteen year old Jase Richardson doesn't feel
like he's getting pushed around out there. Granted it's preseason,
but it doesn't feel I was a little worried about
the physicality, especially on the defensive edge in some of
the physical limitations, and I'm not as worried anymore. And

(08:20):
then if he can give you what he's doing offensively, boy,
you'll overlook some of those defensive limitations, won't you.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
Well, we've been talking about it for years.

Speaker 2 (08:27):
All these teams have these guys that you bring off inch,
you know, end of the game or if an injury,
and they just come in and make threes, right, they
just come in and make plays and make it. We
have those guys now, Jesse sh We have some of
those guys, and he's one of them. We have a
guy that you can, you know, when you need to,
he can come in there and make.

Speaker 3 (08:42):
A three for you. But to your point, he can
make a play.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
He's quick with the basketball, he's got handles, he can
get in the paint, he can create for himself, he
can find others, and you're right, he holds his own defensively.
He doesn't get pushed around. The thing I worry about
a little bit, And it's for every rookie until they
kind of start to fill out a little more. Or
a couple of times he was on the floor and
he kind of came up holding something and I feel
like at that size, at that frame. These guys are

(09:08):
huge and they can't wait to stand there instet a
screen on Jace Richardson.

Speaker 3 (09:13):
So he's gonna have a lot of bumps of bruises
throughout the year. But I think he'll be just fine.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
He's a competitor, he's wired the right way, great pedigree, right,
his dad with an NBA player, his younger brother coming
up through the ranks, a very good chance to be
following his brother and dad's footsteps as well. So I
love everything about him. That shot is pure. I love
the IQ, I love the plays that he makes. He's
again he's fast enough on the defensive end, and that

(09:38):
he can stay with those guys.

Speaker 3 (09:40):
He competes on the defensive end, and you'll take that
any day.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
And he's gonna fill out and all these rookies start
to put on weight, put on size, so he'll start
to come into his own where he can absorb some
of those tough screens and all that as the season
goes on. But you can't tell me that Coach Mosley
isn't gonna find a way to get him in at
some point. Right, He's one of those guys that it's
gonna he makes it hard for the coach to keep

(10:04):
off the floor. You know, I think no Appenda is
going to have his run at some point this year too. So,
but Jase is a guy you know, if you know,
if Jalen needs a day off or whatever it may be,
and we do that.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
We rest guys throughout the year so they're ready for
the playoffs. He's going to get his opportunities, and I
think he'll shine. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (10:21):
I mean, look, with Jays, you're talking about it, especially
until you know, like where Jalen is and what his
situation is, there might be an opening there for some
guard minutes might be a little bit more difficult for
Noah to carve his way onto the floor. But I
mean with Jays, especially because he's he's so offensively gifted
and that's what this team's missed, especially perimeter shooting. You

(10:41):
just keep on giving him tests until he fails one, right, Like,
like he's all aces through the preseason. And granted it's
the preseason, we know, but I don't think coach is
gonna throw him out there for twenty minutes on opening night.
But I do bet early in the season there will
be a good opportunity to uh to to see what
he's got and absolutely pass every test thus far.

Speaker 3 (11:02):
It was funny, Jae. It was funny, Jake.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
He was our post game walk off and I said,
you got to tell me the mood of the team.
I mean, you guys are pumping up points.

Speaker 3 (11:09):
This is fun for you. He goes.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
He goes, the Orlando Magic is a vibe right now,
and I guess I kind of know what that means,
but I kind of don't. But I think it sounds good, right,
I think it's I get that. I think it sounds great,
so we'll take it. The youngster says, we're a vibe
right now. The nineteen year old who turns twenty on Thursday,
so that'll be a fun night for him too.

Speaker 4 (11:29):
Definitely, Jenz approved. I think Chrissy Burdsalid definitely gives the
sign off on that real quick. Before the break d
we had what another seventy two free throws last night.
That was a lot of fun.

Speaker 2 (11:42):
Oh jeez oh, Jake, these things are These things are
a slog, right, and then Eric Spolstra signs up for
six of these, including one tonight on a back to
back hand police you know what, you know, what's funny
correct me if I'm wrong. I feel like the preseason
is like that, and I also feel like the first
couple of weeks of the regular season kind of like that. Right.

Speaker 3 (12:01):
Don't we see a ton of whistles right when the
season start? Yes?

Speaker 4 (12:04):
Ugh, yes, absolutely, And I don't necessarily know why. I
don't know if it's reps trying to prove a point
and the points of emphasis and all that stuff early
in the season, or if it's just early on in
the year guys are more physical and kind of jumping
the gun a little bit. But it does feel that
way and hopefully the magic able to settle in, because
that's the thing. Like, I don't want to read too

(12:26):
deeply into any of this, but if I have to
nitpick putting teams in the free throw line turning the
basketball over, which a lot of teams do in the preseason,
those would be two things I would book at that
you definitely want to clean up before opening night, which
again is next Wednesday, the twenty second The Miami Heat
are in. Basketball is back, people, and it all starts
at Kia Center catching Orlanto Magics opening Week with games

(13:08):
Mackets Magic Insiders Jake Chapman, Dante Marctelli here with you
the Magic. A couple days off, get back in the lab.
We'll see Thursday night our preseason finale with the New
Orleans Pelicans in town. And then a couple more days
off back in the Lab, and then we get going
for real next Wednesday, the twenty second, with the Miami
Heat in town. By the way, this Thursday night, that

(13:29):
broadcast will be right here in ninety six to nine
in the game and pregame will begin at six point
thirty with the opening tap at seven o'clock. A couple
other guys the that have absolutely taken advantage of opportunities
here in the preseason look Wendell's gonna have his opportunities.
But I just I love the headspace the guy's.

Speaker 3 (13:45):
In right now.

Speaker 4 (13:46):
I love the confidence I'm seeing with him on the
offensive end shooting the basketball. He stepped in for like
a leaner from the elbow last night. That was just
not a chat. I don't think you would even have
attempted last year. And then you know, with all of that,
he's also doing all of the Wendell things, like he's
not compromising the screens in the defense because he's trying
to get going offensively. Love what I've seen from Dell.

(14:08):
Love what I've seen from Tristan de Silva. I think
he is has has established himself as as part of
the rotation, and I think we're seeing him build upon
what we saw in what the first thirty games of
last season kind of went sideways for him. I think
he hit that rookie wall. And Tristan has looked fantastic
so far. You mentioned Noah Penda. I thought he's looked

(14:29):
very very good so far as well. And the one
other guy that I wanted to get your take on
is Jet Howard because you talk about doing some other
things that are being asked of you rebounding the basketball assists. Yes,
there's still a whole lot to trim up in Jet's game,
but he's figuring out ways to impact the game. But
he's not knocking down triples. Last night he hit a

(14:49):
couple of threes as well, But eleven points, five boards,
four assists in nineteen minutes. That's I think what you
want to see from Jet Howard.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
You know what I love about Jet the business, The
business decision this summer to work on everything, to work
on his defense, to work on his all around game. Right,
we've seen him drive a few times and have some
tough finishes, knowing it's going to be difficult to next
to impossible to carve out consistent minutes on this roster.
That could be hard for a lot of guys. Right,
that could go, I could take you to a different headspace.

(15:18):
And he has come in and he's been as good
as anybody, certainly on the offensive.

Speaker 3 (15:22):
End here in the preseason.

Speaker 2 (15:24):
And from the standpoint of I'm going to force my
way into the rotation or at least show coach that
I'm ready if he needs me, or I'm going to
open someone's eyes around the league. That says, hey, there's
a guy that just might need an opportunity, and maybe
a team comes and gets me.

Speaker 3 (15:39):
You know what I'm saying.

Speaker 2 (15:40):
I think either way, he's looking at it like I'm
gonna make myself the best version of myself because it's
either going to help me here or it's going to
help my career somewhere in the long haul. And I
love that approach because it would be very easy. But
the other part of it is the injuries.

Speaker 3 (15:55):
You never know.

Speaker 2 (15:56):
I mean, we could be thrust in hopefully not you
hope no, but very quickly the NBA, the life changes
and you could be thrust into a situation where you
have to play. So he's got himself ready and I
like that. There are there are some things that have
to be cleaned up. On the defensive end. He just
has not gotten there yet on that end of the floor.
But he's come a long way from when he first
got here. But offensively, I tell you, there are stretches

(16:17):
where you say, wow, that behind the back into a
step back three the other night last night, and that
was that's pretty There are parts of his offensive game
that you look at and say, Okay, that that's eleventh
pick stuff. And then there's stuff that that you just
have to get better at. But I but I love
I love the approach, and I love how he's helped
himself and Tristan. You know, it's funny, you you, it's
funny to me to hear NBA players talk about confidence.

(16:39):
I don't know how you feel about this, Jake, but
I when I hear confidence, I think about you know,
when I when I was playing pickup ball and I
haven't played in a couple of months and my first
game back, but I feel like I don't know what
the heck I'm doing out there. I can't hold the basketball,
missing layups, right, That's a that's a confidence thing, right,
That's a comfort level thing to me. On a much
smaller level, these guys don't struggle with comfort to that level.

(17:01):
But to think that you're an NBA player, you all
that you've accomplished. These guys have all been the best
player in their town and their area and their state
at one point in their life. To think that they
ever battle confidence is mind blowing to me. But it
is a very real thing in the NBA and in
every sport.

Speaker 3 (17:17):
Look at golfers.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
You know you can you can you can be on
the top of the game, at the top of your game,
and then the next week you're out. But I think
confidence it sounds like to me and correct me if
I'm wrong. For Wendell Carter Junior and for Tristan De Silva,
is that is an unbelievable thing. Look at what Tristan
De Silva did, uh, you know, being one of the
best players in in all of euro Basket, helping Germany
win a gold medal here this past summer, and then

(17:40):
Wendell Carter Junior you mentioned the headspace.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
I mean, yes, that that he's mentioned it. I'm at
an all.

Speaker 2 (17:46):
Time high with my confidence level, Tristan de Silva, I'm
playing with confidence. It's amazing what that word means to people.
And I bet by the way, I met Angel Reese
last night that was pretty cool, Sorr. I was talking
to you, I was talking to Wendell Carter Junior's mom,
which he happened to by so that so that was fun.
I obviously they're good friends, but yeah, I was uh.
I think, uh, I hear that word confidence, right? Do

(18:08):
you feel that way? And you think, well, how can
these guys struggle with confidence? And then you realize it's
a very real thing. But when that confidence is high, well,
these guys could do some incredible thing.

Speaker 4 (18:16):
Sometimes when I hear them talk about confidence, I think
they're just they're just blowing smoke. It's just like a word,
you know, like a buzzwary yea something they heard. But
I mean, I guess the comparison you have to think about. Okay, yeah,
you're confident compared to ninety nine percent of planet Earth.
But when you step out, step out of the floor
with nine of the other best best athletes on planet Earth,

(18:37):
then yeah, maybe you maybe you do have a little
bit of a confidence crisis. Wendell is interesting to me
because Tristan's Tristan's buttoned up. He doesn't he didn't really
wear it like Wendell does. You know everything that Wendell
is feeling thinking every second he's on the floor, right
and so and so you can tell if he's if
he's not feeling it or if he is right. By

(18:59):
by March of last year, d you could tell every
time the shot went up he was expecting it not
to go in, and then and then he would get
frustrated and and and to his credit, he's still hung
in there. And was able to help this team win
games doing other things. But he went out I swear
he went out there every night knowing if I get
eight points tonight, I'm lucky. If I go two for
eight tonight, that's going to be part for the course.

(19:20):
I mean, it was a rotten shooting season and it
just looks like he's you know, well, you got his
swatter back, whatever you want to call it. He's having
fun on the offensive side of the basketball. And it's
a beautiful thing to see because d he we know
he's going to be on the floor, but he can
play a very, very major role in the ascension of
this offense just by doing the things that he does.

Speaker 3 (19:42):
Well. Well, here's the here's the thing, Jake. At the
end of the day, and no matter what that confidence
level looks like or what his role looks like, we
need him. We need Wendell Carter Junior.

Speaker 2 (19:52):
He is the backbone of that team on the defensive end.
And when he when he's confident and smiling.

Speaker 3 (19:58):
You know, look a cation point right to your point.
You know what he's thinking. You know what?

Speaker 2 (20:03):
You know it's that last year there were times you
just kind of fired it up there and didn't really
know what the result was going to be. How about
last night, the second or third shot he took, there
was nowhere to go offensively. He kind of wasn't sure
of himself, and he just kind of floated it up
and bounced in off the backboard, right right, Like that's
the kind of what a difference, right, what a difference?
So get something up there and make a play. And
that's what he was able to do. And I was

(20:24):
beyond impressed with that. And I think that's that's the difference.
That's the difference. Okay, I'm here. It's a free throw
line jumper. I've kind of caught between an alley oop
and a shot. Let me just float it up there
and it banks in. But we need him, We need him,
Guys look up to him. He's Jack. He's so he's
so smart, and he's got so much. He's so poised,

(20:46):
and I love the way he carries himself. He's about
the right things. And if things are starting to turn,
and he's got at an all time high with his
confidence and and he can contribute. I mean, all four
games he's been in double figure scoring. I mean, I
don't think he had four straight games figure scoring at
one point. Last year, he had a twenty point game
in Philadelphia. You have to go back to February of
twenty four. That's a year and a half before he

(21:08):
had a twenty point game, right. I mean, this is
the stuff we're talking about. He's a completely different player
right now. And that's the guy that not everybody was
talking about in the offseason when your referenced to Orlando Magic.
And now you have to factor him in and that
makes us very dangerous and real quick.

Speaker 4 (21:24):
I think you bring up a good point about his
teammates knowing how important he is and and and trying
to pull him through the offensive struggles last year, because
I know you saw that play last that where he
stepped through it and just threw threw the floater up
from the elbow. Follow the whole bench erupted. I mean
they're like, this guy can't miss right now?

Speaker 3 (21:40):
Right Like yes, they said, yes they did.

Speaker 2 (21:43):
They also we erupted with Colin Castleton dunked from Micanopie.

Speaker 3 (21:46):
How about that guy? That was a great That was
one of my favorite plays of the game.

Speaker 4 (21:50):
That was he crowned him. That was pretty nice. Colin
Castleton representing Yeah, look it's preseason basketball. It was a
lot of fun last night getting back in the key
Is Center, obviously, But anytime you can win a preseason game, great.
Anytime you can hand the Heat a loss, preseason, regaar season, postseason,
fall season, winter season, any season, we're handing the Heat

(22:11):
elves whenever we possibly can't.

Speaker 3 (22:13):
Right, let's be doing that opening tonight. Let's meet them
on opening That's good, that's gonna mean. So these two
wins against the Heat don't mean anything if you don't
get them on opening night.

Speaker 4 (22:22):
All Right, he's Dante, I'm Jake to spend magic inside it.
We'll be back tomorrow with another edition. Right here, ninety
six to nine in the game. Have a great night, everybody,
