Game two of a four game preseason slate, and we'll
have it for you at seven o'clock right here on
ninety six to nine, the game, Jake Chapman, Jeff Turner.
We'll have the call for you right here. Get one game,
one crack at Jeff Turner, and we're gonna have them
tomorrow here on the here on the game broadcast, no
pregame show, no postgame show. Then we have a broadcast
at six o'clock here again on ninety six to nine,

(01:23):
a game that'll be against the Miami Heats, and then
we'll close it out on the sixteenth against the New
Orleans Pelicans. We will not have a pre and post
game show until that game on the sixteenth, and we'll
put everything through its paces and be ready for that deal.
Is there anything you love more than the NBA deciding
to go from eight preseason game down to four?

Speaker 3 (01:40):
Oh? Man, I did the six man Show last night,
and we you know, Johnny Kevin have been doing it
for a long time, but but I wasn't sure if
they have been doing it quite that long. Right, I'm
going back to the eight game preseasons. I just remember
stan Van Gundy being so frustrated with having to play
that many preseason game. Yes, you think about it.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
It's inat every guy wants every opportunity to prep, doesn't
he's annoyed by it.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
I think that was probably part of it, was he's
sitting there, going, this is great practice time that I'm
spending making a round trip up to Cleveland or Philadelphy
or whatever October. So no, it is that seems like
a relic man when you talk about how long these
things used to be, and sometimes I think four preseason
games is a let along, but they're still you know,

(02:27):
there's still teams to do five and six or teams.
You know, we've done the Flamingo thing with teams from
Brazil traveling in San Antonio, played the Guangzhou Lions. I
think last yes, it's just thankful that I have to
learn a whole bunch of Chinese names.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
There's a lot of teams that come from Australia. We've
seen the Australian team, We've seen the Southern South American teams.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
So we'll say that right like and especially we took
the trip to Puerto Rico. That part is really cool.
You're reaching the expanding the global reach of the game.
I think the preseason is well utilized for that. But
if we were up to Jamal Moseley's, Dan Van Gundy,
Eric Spolstra, Nick Nurse. Then there'll probably be about two
preseason games and a whole bunch more practice time. But look,

(03:10):
you know the thing is, it gives you a good
look at a guy like Jase Richardson, for instance. Some
of these guys that you know, Jase is obviously gonna
be around, but there there are guys fighting for roster
spots here and across the league, and uh the very least,
the preseason is a good chance for those guys to
prove themselves well.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
We get some good battles, no question, that's what it's
all about. But when you've got six days between preseason
games and nothing's happened of note of significance to this point,
what could be better this time of year, Jake Chapman
than the NBA GM survey being released today?

Speaker 3 (03:41):
Could be? Could there be better.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
Timing for all thirty gms to get together and for
this to be released on NBA.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
I swear they do it just for us, just for us,
and they followus on serious XM. I swear I think
they do well.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Will oblige them. Then if they've got the information will
oblige them. So it will begin with predictions for those
that don't know every all thirty general managers have been pulled, right,
And there used to be the days where Steven Mervis
would do this for the Orlando Magic, right you probably
I don't know that he ever actually did, but whoever
the general manager was would pass it on down to whoever.
I think those days are gone. I think all thirty

(04:15):
general managers take this seriously, or at least if not,
whoever does it, Like Sam Presty didn't touch this, There's
no question about it. But who whoever did touch it,
I think they put a lot of thought into it.
And we're going to reveal a lot of the results.
So this is this doesn't mean anything. Let's just start
by that this doesn't mean anything, but this is an
evaluation of theoretically thirty gms giving you their information on

(04:37):
what they see, and you have last year's results to
kind of go up against it as well. So forty
nine questions Number one, who will win the twenty twenty
six NBA Finals? Eighty percent said the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Then you have seven percent, Cleveland seven percent. Denver last
year was eighty three percent Boston, others receiving votes, Houston
and New York. Your thoughts when you hear that, not

(04:58):
much of a surprise there, no.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
Not much. A lot of people are hot on Denver.
I would be shocked if I mean, if for Oklahoma
to repeat, that's gonna be that's gonna be sort of
placing your stamp on history. So I'm a little surprised
at eighty percent said that, But I think that's probably
the easy answer, right, you just say they'll probably repeat, but.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Not the first.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
Right.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
A lot of people thought the Clippers might make some noise.
A lot of people, you know, they don't have the
Lakers in there.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
You know, got a lot to deal with right now,
right they do. I'm Houston. I think I think I'm
a little surprise that more people anybody aid, because I
do like Houston a lot. That Western Conference, though, I mean,
I think everybody's thought process is because of all those
teams is just going to be a grinder. So, uh,
find the team that maybe comes a little unscathed out
of the Eastern Conference, a team like Cleveland, potentially maybe
a team like Orlando or New York or whoever, and

(05:45):
every know, I think you could see that for sure.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
Now let me let me let me start by saying
this as well as we go to question number two here,
and we're not going to go through all of them.
We're going to go through the majority of one of
the most important ones. But Orlando is littered throughout this survey.
By the way, Magic fans, So if you're wondering why
the heck we're doing the questions, first one had nothing
to do with the Magic, although they could be on there.
Somebody might have put them on there. The next one
is Eastern Conference rankings sixty three percent have Cleveland number one,

(06:09):
New York number two at thirty percent, and your Orlando
Magic at number three seven percent of the first place vote,
but they got sixty percent of the third place vote,
the Orlando Magic.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
Your thoughts on that, Jake.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
We saw that Vegas has them as the third best
team in the East, the eighth best team in the NBA.
Looks like the general managers agree that the Magic with
these expectations could be third, followed by Atlanta, Detroit, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Boston.

Speaker 3 (06:35):
Wow, So that's telling your first and foremost I mean Boston,
because I keep on saying to myself that's idiotic. They
are not eighth. They're not eighth, right, I mean, they're
not a one man show. And Jason Tatum is not
hyway right. I mean, now you're telling me they're one.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
You're telling me they are one spot behind Philadelphia. Yeah,
we're gonna go ahead. What is the event We're gonna
go ahead and put Philadelphia there.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
That's yeah, that is that's a miscalculation. Let's just say,
as far as the top goes, it feels about right.
I mean about you know, seven percent, maybe one in
ten gms, I guess roughly maybe thinks we're gonna surprise
and exceed expectations. But second third, that's what you know,
Vegas saying you're gonna win fifty one games. That'll put

(07:19):
you right about second third probably in the Eastern Conference.
So that makes sense to me. I'm a little surprised
Detroit didn't get a little more love. They seem like
a trendy pick right now. But look, Cleveland and New
York are I think, you know, almost without question, the
two favorites in the Eastern Conference. And that makes sense
to me. You think about what New York did last year. Yes,
they got a new head coach, but I don't expect
it to look too different than it did under Tom

(07:42):
Thibbito versus versus Mike Brown now, and Cleveland's got something
to prove to be sure. You know me, I'm still
plugged into Cleveland sports fan absolutely. The first eighty two
games mean absolutely nothing for Caps fans this year. They
got to get to the spring. That's all that matters
for that team. And that's what we're gonna talk about today.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
But we got the general manager survey, so we'll kind
of fly through some of these other things. But tomorrow
I do want to bring that up because I know,
I think if Cleveland doesn't win a championship, if this
doesn't work, or if there is certainly if they have
an early exit, that Cleveland team looks completely different next year.
I think they're all in on that this year, and
who knows what New York looks like as well. Now
under Mike Brown, you have Oklahoma City the runaway winners
for the Western Conference, followed by Denver, Houston Minnesota, so

(08:23):
Houston third there in the East. Who'll win the MVP?
Number one Nikole Jokic, Number two, Luka Doncic, Number three
Shay Gilges Alexander number four, Victor Wembin Yama. Do you
have any issues with any of those? And then also
receiving votes Giannis, Anthony Edwards, and Donovan Mitchell.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
I think Anthony Edwards is a smart money pick for
MVP this year. I just in Minnesota is so good.
Like Chris Finch doesn't let them have off years. He
doesn't let them go two weeks and well, I mean
they've had rough stretches, but that team, to me is
a sleeper team in the Western Conference. And Anthony Edwards
doesn't It feel like he's kind of been knocking at
the door of the last few years and that's always
he'll deal it with MVP. It's I could have added

(09:00):
last year. Maybe he's a year off, but his is
coming soon. I think I like that this year we're
out over our skis on Wemby. Can we see him
play a full season and the Spurs win for that
in this thirty five games before we do all of
this and Luca in shape, that's gonna be intriguing. But
I just don't see an MVP on a team that
also has Lebron James who could win or at least

(09:21):
has a pretty good case for Most Valuable Player every year,
So no, I like Anthony Edwards this year. I think
he's gonna be okay, okay, very good.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
I don't know how we go from shake gild Is
Alexander all the way down to eight percent. The guy
was the MVP last year and now he drops down
eight percent. Es actually have eighty percent think they're gonna
win the title again.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
Try last year it was SGA at forty percent, and
now he drops down to eight after having won. Okay,
the first time the Orlando Magic are mentioned, you got
to go down to this question, which player is most
likely to have a breakout season in twenty five twenty six?
Number one A Men Thompson thirty percent runaway winner A
Men Thompson for the Houston Rockets. A lot of love
for a Men and they think he could be the

(10:00):
closest thing to a Yannis type player that we're going
to see here in the NBA. Not quite as tall,
but with that skill set. Tied at second his brother
Asar Thompson Detroit Pistons, great defensive player.

Speaker 3 (10:12):
I don't see that.

Speaker 2 (10:13):
Maybe the breakout season, but maybe if he gets any offense,
maybe that's right, tied with Brandon Miller of Charlotte and
also Victor Woman Yama, so they all get ten percent
of the vote. They're tied at second, so that means fifth.
Franz Wagner. Franz Wagner fifth at seven percent of the
vote for Breakout Season twenty five twenty six.

Speaker 3 (10:30):
I don't think that's.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
Hard to argue if you want, if you had any
eyeballs on FEVA on Foeba's EuroBasket this summer Jact for sure.

Speaker 3 (10:38):
Last year's, by the way, was J Dubb and so
they nailed it. Last year, Jaylen Williams got thirteen percent
of the vote and that was the point vote. Anybody boy.
I like him on Thompson a lot. I don't you know.
He's better offensively than his brother, but he's still pretty
raw offensively, absolute player defensively. And that team you bring
in Durand to get rid of the guy that I

(10:58):
think they wanted to get rid of, and like I feel,
I love the coach. It feels like that team could
be an absolute monster, so I don't hate that. I'm
really intrigued by the Brandon Miller pick. You know, I
have no idea what to expect from Charlotte. But for sure,
just as far as Franz, you know, Franz was well
on his general managers are knowing, aren't they.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
They know they realize this guy is poised of all
the sires.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
Thirty games of the season. Last year, he was well
on his way until the oblique injury. For sure. What
you know with him and Paulo, there is a one
A one B type thing, and so you hope it's
not one guy kind of sacrificing a little bit because
the guy is having a great year. I think if
the look, if the Magic are a top three seed
in the Eastern Conference, then we're gonna be in conversations

(11:42):
of having two all starts and a boat those guys
are healthy, yes, then obviously those are will be the
guys for sure. I mean, Franz has been on an
upward trajectory when healthy for the last you know, most
of his career. But last year you saw what it
looked like with a team in his hands when Paula
was out and then and then playing the complimentary role
as well. He's on the come up for sure.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
No Magic players mentioned. And who's the best point guard,
shooting guard, small forward, power forward, best center. No magic
players mentioned, didn't even get other votes. So I love
that because that's going to put a chip on our shoulder.
You don't have Polo Bancaro somewhere on that list. You
don't have Desmond Baine somewhere on that list among the
among the shooting guards.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
And I get it. I get it.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
To put him on. You got a knockoff at Anthony
Edwards or Steph Curry or SGA. I get that. I
get that, But there are no magic mentions in any
of the top best position players. So I think they
are a little chance for a little a little chip
on their shoulder. Best offseason moves Number four the Ortlanto
Magic at seven percent. Obviously with the acquisition of Desmond Baine,
which one player acquisition will make the biggest impact? And

(12:46):
that was number two, Desmond Bane. Okay, so a lot
of Desmond Bain loved Number two at seventeen percent. Which
player acquisition will make the biggest impact? And then what
was the most underrated player acquisition of the off seats
in number one, Desmond Bin at seventeen percent last year
was Alex Caruso. Hard to argue that it's pretty damn

(13:06):
good for Okac this year, it's Desmond Bane at number one,
and no mention you've got another fifteen players mentioned. Tias
Jones to me is a nice sneak. You mentioned you
didn't get Luke Cornette at seven percent. I think we
get Tias Jones on that list. But your thoughts on
Desmond Ban according to the general managers maybe being the
most underrated player acquisition of the summer.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
Yeah, I mean it's certainly isn't underrated here. He certainly
whn't underrated by Jamal Moseley. You know, no, they we're
all over the moon abye it's about But Desmond Bain
is you know, he's a guy who you know, he's
kind of a true NBA fans favorite type of player,
right like he is. He's low key, especially sort of

(13:45):
sharing the spotlight and and really giving the spotlight to
John Morant in his time in Memphis. And that's exactly
what we want. That's why you know, we've got the
two young guys that we talked about just a moment ago.
We want Desmond to come in obviously put his stamp,
but also to fit in and to help those guys
to develop into the players they can be so you
understand maybe if they called it underrated, but certainly I
think anybody who knows Hoops knows that that guy is

(14:07):
exactly what was missing last year three years. Really as
far as this build goes, let me just say this
real fast, like, am I missing something with Atlanta? I mean,
is are people really excited about the Caleb Houston acquisition.
I just don't fully grasp why people think Christops Perzingis
and Nikail Alexander Walker is going to put that team
over the top. Jalen Johnson coming back, I think that

(14:28):
is a difference. I think that's the offseason moving do anything.
I mean the two acquisitions, and to me, the Jarazingis
comes in and he's the second best center on the team,
I'd rather un Yikakongu on the floor with what Atlanta's
trying to do. I'm just I don't think Atlanta mad
made franchise altering moves during the offseason.

Speaker 2 (14:46):
Personally, well, the general managers would disagree. They've got Christaps
Porzingis high on that list, so that might be part
of the reason, and obviously Nikile Alexander Walker. But yeah,
getting Jalen Johnson back is going to be a big
part of that. Dyson Daniels obviously he's coming back. He
was healthy last year. But I can see why they
have them fourth in the East.

Speaker 3 (15:02):
But to your point, I is saying Prey is a
sleeper MVP. Standdate. I like the coach. I think they
could be a good team, but I just I think
our offseason dwarfs what they did by a ton.

Speaker 2 (15:14):
When we come back, we're gonna get the general manager's
reaction to which team will be most improved in twenty
twenty and twenty five, twenty six. And I'm gonna let
you know what ticked me off about these general managers
as we go this, Yeah, just four days to get
so of the polls that were coming in, and they
answer one thing and then the next question comes in
and all the general managers fell completely asleep.

Speaker 3 (15:36):
And I'll get you Dante's Inferno coming up Dot das Inferno.

When we return to Magic Insiders in a moment, welcome

(16:12):
back everyone in is Magic Insiders presented by International Diamond Center,
Dote Marcitelli, James Gapman here with you on Magic Insiders
presented by International Diamond Center, Magic and Action tomorrow against Philadelphia.
We'll have that for you right here seven o'clock on
ninety six to nine. The game. We have been recapping
and rehashing the twenty twenty five twenty six General Manager Survey.

(16:33):
All thirty general managers will hold forty nine questions. We've
run through the majority of it, but now let's continue
on before we get to the call of the game
and the thing that bothers me the most, I'm gonna
get your thoughts on this. Which team will be most
improved in twenty five twenty six heading away with it
forty seven percent? The number one answer to the Orlando Magic,
tied per second the Spurs and Hawks. But the general managers,

(16:56):
believing in what Jeff Weltman has done, believing in Jamal,
believing in this young cores, that this could be the
most improved team. They were seventh last year, remember seventh
in the East, which ironically, the general managers predicted Orlando
would be seventh in the East. That was last year's
general manager survey. This year they have them third. They
think Orlando will be the most improved. Okay, so there

(17:17):
you go.

Speaker 3 (17:17):
I mean, this is it might as well be gospel
here he's gout's a killing it. Bull's Look. I think
a lot of people expected better than forty one wins
last year, but obviously not a pun better. The injuries
were were huge, and so if you can just stay healthy,
and it's a big if, but if you can stay
healthy throughout the year, for sure, there's no reason you can't.

(17:38):
You can't put you know, double digit wins on top
of that forty one from last year.

Speaker 2 (17:43):
No, I think so. And then you get into best
international player. Rookie will be the biggest biggest steal in
the draft. No, Jase Richardson for rookie that could be
the biggest steal in the draft. I was kind of
surprised by that. I think that's a great fit potentially
for this Orlando Magic team. Or you know, Cooper Flag
will be the best rookie of five years. You have
all that, then you get down to defense and the
question is which is the best defensive team in the NBA? Okay,

(18:05):
so tied for second the Orlando Magic at seven percent,
tied for second. So you got Okace at eighty three
percent suffocating defense and then tied for second Orlando and
Minnesota at seven percent.

Speaker 3 (18:16):
So I love that.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
But let's get draw a call the game brought you
by glip from ring Central. Rethink the way you work
with secure meetings and messaging on any device with clip
by ring Central, which head coach is the best manager
motivator of people. You do not have Jamal Moseley listed
on here. You have others receiving votes. Jamal is on there.
We feel we have the coach of the year, right,
we feel that he's going to be the coach of

(18:38):
the year. But then you ask the question, who is
the best defensive team in the NBA?

Speaker 3 (18:43):
Right?

Speaker 2 (18:43):
And seven percent of it? So seven percent of thirty. Right,
you can do the math. You know exactly how many
people predicted that the Orlando Magic. I can't do that. Math,
I can't do that. It's about twelve. I just notice it.
But it's a handful six seven ish, right, people like that. Yeah,
but the general managers predicted the Magic to be the
second best defensive team in the NBA. Then you get

(19:04):
to the question which head coach has the best defensive schemes.
So if you are saying the Magic are the second
best defensive team and you're just giving Jamal cos Mosley
votes for Coach of the Year, he is nowhere on
this list which head coach has the best defensive schemes?
Mark Dagnall running away with it. Okay, you picked them

(19:24):
to be the best defensive team, then we're getting Emi Udoka, Spolster,
Torn lu Joe Miszoul, You're getting everybody else. You have
said the Magic are the second best team in the
NBA defensively, and then you don't put them on the list.
So then I saw that, I thought, okay, well, they
must be crediting our defense to an assistant coach. So
then I look at who is the best assistant coach

(19:45):
in the NBA. Bupkis Nada. There are fifteen coaches named,
and not one Orlando Magic coach. So who I ask you,
Jake Chapman should be. Obviously it's the players, and that's
what Jamal Mosey would say. It's the players that go
out there and do it. Who should be getting credit
for the schemes. Who's coming up with this?

Speaker 3 (20:04):
Yeah, obviously last year was defensive stalwarts like Corey Joseph
and and Mo Wagner. Exactly.

Speaker 4 (20:13):
I mean, if you don't, if you don't think the
sum is better, it's better than all of the parts
when you watch the Orlando Magic that I don't know
what to tell you, and and part of it is
scheme and part of it is motivation.

Speaker 3 (20:25):
I mean, Jamal Moseley, we could say what we want, right.
The one thing you cannot doubt is that Jamal Moseley
is a defensive tactician. And then it gets buy in
on that lend from young players. And that's the big
kicker here. That's part of the reason I love Chris
Finch so much. It's part of some of these coaches
I think. I don't think we appreciate Emo O Dooka.

(20:46):
Motivating young players to defend at a high level is
so freaking hard. To do in this league, and coach
Moseley has taken these guys from here to hear. There's
still a plenty of room to grow, obviously, but you
don't have one of the top five defensive teams and
people recognize we are one of those premier defensive teams
in the league with a young roster unless you have

(21:08):
a great defensive tactician and motivator. And those are two
things that anybody can see describe Jamal row it's shocking.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
Now, it's shocking. I think that's a little extra motivation.
So I say all that to say, okay, I think
they had a brain fart. I think they just went
ahead and threw that down there and said, yeah, that's
a fun defensive team, and then they completely fell apart.
When it was time to name who gets the credit
for that, it is Jamal Moseley the architect of this defense,
no question, Dale Osborne a terrific defensive coordinator if you will,

(21:37):
those two have done a phenomenal job. And to me,
when it's all said and done, Jamal Moseley is going
to not only get consideration for Coach of the Year,
I think he's gonna win the thing. Jake I think
he is gonna win your Coach of the Year, and
I'm gonna say that right now, because I think we
are going to be a top two or three defense,
and I think we're going to be middle of a
pack ten to fifteen on the offensive end. And then

(21:57):
this time next year they will be giving a ton
of credit Jake Chapman to Jamal Mosley when it comes
to defensive schemes, and it just blew my mind that
they haven't done that to this point.

Speaker 3 (22:06):
We have more to break down tomorrow. We'll do that
on our show.

Speaker 2 (22:08):
We'll get ready for the Magic in the Philadelphia seventy
six ers. But that'll do it for today's version of
Magic Insiders, presented by International Diamond Center,

I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
