Speaker 2 (00:58):
Tomorrow night, the final preseason game for the Orlando Magic
and they will host the New Orleans Pelicans. And I'm
kind of excited about tomorrow for a number of reasons.
Number one, it's the final preseason game, so that in
and of itself lends itself to some excitement. And number two,
this we'll spend time on this tomorrow, but this New
Orleans Pelicans roster not a complete overhaul, but there are

(01:20):
some new faces on that team, and everybody's healthy. Knock
on Wood, They've been pretty interesting here in the preseason
and we get to see him up close and personal.
Potentially if everybody plays, you never know how that's gonna
go in the final preseason game. But Zion's been playing,
he looks slim, and Trim Trey Murphy's healthy, Alvarado's healthy.
They've got guys out there that we haven't seen herb

(01:40):
Jones for a year, year and a half.

Speaker 4 (01:42):
So excited about that one.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
But again, to watch that one and to watch the
Orlando Magic all season long, we want to encourage you
to sign up for FanDuel Sports Network. You can find
the FanDuel Sports app, or you can go to Amazon
and you can load up find the FanDuel Sports app
on that one as well, and get the pass for
the entire season FanDuel Sports Network, and if you do it.

(02:04):
Now you're gonna get two free tickets to a Magic game.
Two free tickets to a Magic game if you sign
up for an entire season of FanDuel. That's the only
way to watch you Orlando Magic here locally. And again,
the Magic kickoff the season on the twenty second against
the Miami Heat, will have our final preseason game. And again,
when you're in the car, we want you to listen
and if you're home, listen to Jake Chapman right here
on ninety six.

Speaker 4 (02:24):
To nine in the game. But put the TV on mirror.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
The two Jake's audio are broadcast, so you can do
that and find a way to do both. And again
we encourage you to tune in to FanDuel all season long. Jake,
I just want to let you know today's show is
going to be a heavy lift for you. I've got
a bunch of things that I'm gonna throw your way.

Speaker 4 (02:41):
I just want I just want to start off with that.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
But number one, how excited are we this time of
year for the final preseason game tomorrow night?

Speaker 5 (02:49):
Yes, excited, ready to get through it.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
And ready for the good stuff to I think the
only people probably more excited to get through tomorrow night
than you and I and the to the broadcasters, are
the players and the coaching staff. You know, it's this
time of year, you're out, you're so close to uh
to get into where the mean the games really mean something.

Speaker 5 (03:11):
You just want everybody to get through it healthy.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
You still have some work to do, obviously, the coaching
staff is going to be evaluating right up to the
very last second.

Speaker 5 (03:18):
Your roster for opening night is due.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
I think it's the twentieth, so you've got five days
to make those decisions. Some teams don't have very many
decisions to make the magic may they have an open
two way spot, right and they have an open roster
spot as well. So important for those guys to get
some some good film up for sure, and important to
you know, to kind of do a dress rehearsal, make
sure you go through the motions, make sure you're comfortable

(03:40):
and ready for opening night. But really right now, it's
about getting to opening night intact and as fresh as
you possibly can be.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Well, and you mentioned the roster, and you got to
make some decisions, finalize it by the twentieth you're right
the day before opening night, And so that was part
of today's show, I want to go through kind of
where we are for this Orlando Magic roster wise, because
you're seeing guys getting waived, you're seeing guys that are
still out there. So the next segment, we're going to
go through, in my opinion, the most notable free agents
that are still available, and Jake Chapman will tell us

(04:09):
whether these people will be in the NBA or not
this year. So we'll go through some of those and
get his thoughts now. But just so everybody knows, this
Magic roster currently has one regular spot available, So there
is one spot available. That spot cannot be utilized until January,
and I don't know the exact date, but because of
our salary situation and second Apron and all that stuff,
we cannot fill that spot until.

Speaker 4 (04:32):
Until we get to January. Now, you can make moves
if somebody, if somebody.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
Calls and says, hey, I want player X off your roster,
you can make trades and free up a roster spot
and fill it that way, But we cannot outright sign
anybody until January.

Speaker 4 (04:46):
If I understand that correct.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
We do have one two way spot available, so the
Magic have signed two two way players in Orlando, Robinson
and Jamal Kaine, and they have some nice NBA experience.
And I think part of this exercise, Jake, as it
lends to the fact that we have we have decided
this year and going all in all of these extra
spots that where you're normally taking flyers on guys. Jeff
Wellman has done a phenomenal job of filling it with

(05:09):
guys that have NBA experience, and we'll go through that.
The heavy lift for you is letting everybody know here
in the next five or ten minutes who these six
or seven guys are, and that's going to be your
task that are potentially competing for one spot, and just
so everybody knows, just because we have two guys signed.

Speaker 4 (05:25):
So the other day it happens all the time. Someone
can still get waved.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
You can wave someone from a two way spot and
replace them with someone else. It typically doesn't happen here
in Orlando.

Speaker 4 (05:34):
And that's fine.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
And you've got two guys that I don't expect that
to happen, two great players in Orlando, Robinson and Jamal Kine.
But if you know, if if if you're really like
two other guys, you can make that decision. Start with
Jamal Kaine, who ironically spent last year with the New
Orleans Pelicans and let everybody know him and two way
spot and a guy that if he gets his number called,
he'll have an operat he'll have an opportunity to produce.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
Yeah, he's he feels like kind of a Swiss army
knife sort of prospect.

Speaker 5 (06:00):
He's a wing. He can do a little bit of
everything pretty well.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
And look with both he and Robinson, you know, at
the very least, at the time they spent in Miami,
they were getting coached up properly and and at the
very least that that was a positive experience for their
long term development. And spent time with New Orleans last year,
So you've got some some worthwhile NBA experience as far
as he goes. And I think he's a guy that
you feel like can sort of fill in the cracks.

Speaker 5 (06:26):
He's he's not bad at anything. I think, yeah, a
good way.

Speaker 4 (06:32):
He looks comfortable out there.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
You can tell the difference with NBA guys and not
NBA guys, right, and all of these guys are right there,
they're right close. But the way he moves, he's got
to move about him. Three years in the NBA two
years with Miami, he played forty four games and with
the New Orleans Pelicans thirty seven games, thirty four percent
three point shooters.

Speaker 4 (06:50):
So that's a guy that you know.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
We know this Jake, we saw Trevor and Queen played
all fifty of his G League games within the first
couple of months of the season. I mean he was
he was eligible on like the second to last day
of the season. That's how much we utilized that position. Now,
obviously a lot of injuries which you hope don't happen,
but there is precedent for these guys getting an opportunity.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
And when we talk about positions in the NBA, right
it always comes down to who you can defend mostly,
and this guy can defend one through three pretty easily,
six to six with some nice range and good lateral quickness.
For sure, I think coach Moseley would be very comfortable
starting a game with him as part of the rotation,
playing in fifteen to twenty twenty minutes on any given night.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
The other guy Orlando Robinson, and he is He was
with Miami from twenty two to twenty four last year,
split time with Sacramento in Toronto nine games with Sacramento,
thirty five with Toronto, one hundred and eleven NBA games, Jake,
that's what you're talking. Born and raised in Las Vegas,
went to Fresno State, spend time in Sioux Falls. So
this guy knows what. This guy's about as appreciative as

(07:50):
anybody to be in the NBA.

Speaker 4 (07:52):
What can it say?

Speaker 2 (07:53):
Is there an opportunity somewhere along the way for Orlando Robinson?

Speaker 5 (07:57):
Well, for sure, first.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
Of all, I mean if we if he is not
on the opening night roster, I'm gonna be very disappointed
because his name is Orlando for crying, I know, I mean, I.

Speaker 4 (08:07):
Know which which. By the way, quick quick interjection.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
I have looked at this in the past, and David
Steele brought it up because they're the sleuth that he is.
Has there ever been a player with the team with
the city name that has played for said city?

Speaker 4 (08:20):
My gosh, I mean, how great is that?

Speaker 1 (08:23):
Has?

Speaker 2 (08:24):
No? To my knowledge, there has not been. You know,
there's been what Brandon Boston I think never played. You know,
there's there Houston, right, Caleb Houston. There there have been
guys along the way, but to my knowledge, not.

Speaker 5 (08:34):
A Dallas mine. There's no Dallas.

Speaker 4 (08:35):
Anywhere there's a Dallas. Kmigi's never played for Dallas, but
to my knowledge there is, and that'll be one a
flight to Phoenix or something. We're gonna look all that up.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
But so this would be and my to my knowledge,
this would be the first time Otown.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
I mean, that's that's a pretty easy nickname. I think
for him, it just moved right off the tongue. Yeah,
he look, dude, is you can call him otown because
he looks like a city building, right, yes, skyscraper.

Speaker 5 (09:02):
He is a brick house.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
And you know, you talk about what you're looking for
in a in a backup center, third string center, it's
it's basically Orlando Robinson NBA experience. Anytime you're talking about
over one hundred games or near one hundred games with
the guys that you know are signing two way deals
and kind of on the periphery, that's exactly what you're
looking for.

Speaker 5 (09:20):
He's sort of a proven commodity.

Speaker 3 (09:22):
Still some still some meat on the development bone with
both Orlando Robinson and Jamar Gain twenty six years old,
so it's not like they're past their prime by any sense.

Speaker 5 (09:32):
And from what I've seen so far, the jumper don't
look bad either.

Speaker 3 (09:35):
And by the way, I was talking to Jason Jackson
and some of the broadcast crew the other night when
Miami were in.

Speaker 4 (09:41):
Nice name drop, Nice name drop.

Speaker 5 (09:42):
Okay, thank you very much. They're gonna miss that guy.

Speaker 3 (09:45):
They they they grew very friend of Orlando Robinson because
of what I just said. Like, boy, over the course
of eighty two games, d you know this as well
as anybody when you know what you're gonna get when
you try a guy out there, a proven commodity and
you don't have to worry about highs and lows.

Speaker 5 (10:00):
It's like this is you know, he's going to give us.

Speaker 3 (10:04):
Solid screening, good rebounding, you know, kind of the Wendell
Carter junior work profile. I think Orlana Robinson is exactly
where he needs to be and he's a really, really.

Speaker 5 (10:16):
Kind of low key good edition.

Speaker 4 (10:17):
This offseason, by the way, the Magic did sign two
other players.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
They've waived Alex Morales and they've waived Jalen Crutcher, but
they did sign Philip Wheeler five games in the NBA
all last year with the Philadelphia seventy six ers, and
also Javonte Smart, who Ostiola Magic fans may remember one
of Ostiola's better players last year, and he's got a
couple of years of NBA experience as well does Javonte,

(10:41):
with a number of different teams. So that's a guy
that can certainly help you break glass if needed. Spend
time with the Milwaukee Bucks, the Miami Heat as well,
Philadelphia seventy six ers, eighteen games of NBA experience over
two years. Let's kind of fly through the other ones.
Colin Castleton, jac guy, I'm very intrigued with Colin Castleton.

Speaker 4 (11:00):
A couple of years in the NBA.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
One year with Los Angeles Lakers sixteen games and then
last year Memphis, Toronto, Philadelphia, three teams.

Speaker 4 (11:07):
I feel like this guy is an NBA player.

Speaker 3 (11:10):
Yeah, he's He's darn close, man, He's got the size,
he's I think probably, you know, the worry is defensively,
is it the lateral quickness and can his body? You know,
do guys go through him? Guys shaped like Orlando Robinson
for instance. But with that said, offensively play there's a
whole lot to work with there. And you're right, I mean,
if you're getting those ten days in March from different teams.

(11:32):
Toronto's given you a look, especially in March when different
teams are right depending on where they are, maybe not
you know, you know the time of year when you're
quote unquote getting looks at guys. Yeah, sure, he's really
close to and so he's he's a guy that you
might think about, like, if it's not us, is.

Speaker 5 (11:51):
Somebody else going to snatch him up? Right there?

Speaker 3 (11:53):
There may be some outward pressure as far as Colin
Castleton goes. Different sort of prospect and different sort of
prospect that I think then that that we usually look at.
We like our size, but we like our rangey, flexible size,
and that is one of the drawbacks to his game.
But we also don't have a whole bunch of size
and shooting, and so he's definitely an interesting prospect to

(12:15):
keep an eye on.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
You're talking about the teams that have entered there, Dante
Hall and uh Tim Frasier Eires.

Speaker 5 (12:20):
Oh god.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
A Laker fan was complaining yesterday about real fans remember
this and it was like the Kuzma years, and somebody
came back with real magic fans remember this, and they
dropped Randall and and we love Dwayne Bak who.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
I love, I love me some Devin Kennedy. But but yeah, okay,
last one. I know what ducky in to break Lester.
If there's one spot available, boy, you wonder if the
Magic are truly looking to sign one more two way spot. Boy,
you wonder if this guy can't grab it. And again,
all of these guys are competing to potentially get signed
for this last spot. But you know, three years at

(12:57):
Memphis with Penny Hardaway, so he's got that, I agree,
played with Jalen Durham, Josh why not, Emny Imani Bates
and James Wiseman, two years with Golden State forty one
games with them, and then last year with Philadelphia and
New Orleans. Solid three point shooter. The numbers haven't totally
borne that out. But he's only had about what what
fifty NBA games in his NBA career and he's about

(13:19):
thirty five percent.

Speaker 4 (13:20):
There's a lot of potential to me with Lester.

Speaker 5 (13:23):
This guy is an NBA player. I'm convinced. Yeah, I
think that.

Speaker 3 (13:26):
And again you go back to, Okay, where did you
spend time Okay in Golden State. Well, at the very least,
I think you saw from your vets how to work
day in and day out.

Speaker 5 (13:38):
That's why you were that's right in that sort of program.
He could shoot. He's a lefty. We love lefties. Good
NBA experience, good NBA body.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
I think probably some questions about his defensive acumen, but
the guy's got a jumper, and I love his name too.

Speaker 5 (13:53):
It's it reminds I love Dateline.

Speaker 3 (13:55):
Date Line has Lester Holt and John Canonees, and.

Speaker 4 (14:00):
You're gonna make that mistake at some point.

Speaker 5 (14:01):
I think Dateline every time I hear it. So that's
a good nickname. Maybe I'll call him Dateline.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
That's awesome. Last one Reese Beekman. He's trying to make
an NBA roster again, NBA experience. Two games of Golden
State last year, thirty four with the Brooklyn Nets, just
turned twenty four, played at UVA right after they won
four years at UVA. I like the guys four years
one spot. I'd like the heck out of that. Played
with Jay Huff, Trey Murphy who will see tomorrow, Sam Howser,
Ryan Dunn who's with Phoenix. So again a defensive specialist

(14:28):
and a guy that certainly has NBA experience. So you
see the method, you see what Jeff Weltman is trying
to do here, and you're gonna get guys all throughout
this roster that belong at the NBA level, and it's
great to watch out. The Atlanta Magic's quest for the
Emirates NBA Cup agains this fall. As part of group play,
the Magic squad will host two Friday night home games

He has fond memories of his time here in Orlando
and of the fans here in Central Florida, and I
love this event, the fourth Annual Hispanic Impact Summit, And
we love Carlos Arroyo in the career that he had
here in Central He's.

Speaker 4 (16:13):
The best way.

Speaker 5 (16:13):
I feel like pert Rica is having a moment right now, right.

Speaker 4 (16:17):
That's exactly right.

Speaker 3 (16:18):
He tweet the Low's the preseason game, bad buddy, No,
Carlos is awesome.

Speaker 5 (16:22):
It was fun. Was that two seasons Agoes.

Speaker 3 (16:24):
At the thirty fifth anniversary when we caught up with
them on the podcast, it was great to hear from him.

Speaker 5 (16:29):
That was my intern season was his last year here
and he was charged fun to cover and it was
pretty cool.

Speaker 3 (16:35):
Those the original Notese Latinos going back in two thousand
and six seven when Carlos was amazing.

Speaker 5 (16:41):
The place would be decked out.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
It was a lot of fun and obviously a very
cool cause that we're getting involved in.

Speaker 4 (16:47):
Yeah, he was great.

Speaker 2 (16:48):
We just interviewed him a couple of weeks ago and
he was instrumental in bringing the NBA to Puerto Rico,
where he's from, and uh, just a class actor. We're
happy to have him here in town. NBA free agent
still on the market. Centers DeAndre Jordan, that's an interesting name.
Probably Denver the only team that would be interested. But
you've got Tristan Thompson out there, Daniel Tice, TODJ.

Speaker 4 (17:07):
Gibson.

Speaker 2 (17:08):
Does he play after forty forty one years old? Do
any of those players make an NBA roster.

Speaker 3 (17:13):
I think DeAndre Jordan might get a call even even Denver,
notwithstanding if an injury hits somewhere, TODJ.

Speaker 5 (17:19):
Gibson, If Tom Debbodeau is not on a staff, and
I'm not sure.

Speaker 4 (17:23):
He doesn't, Guys, who else was there?

Speaker 5 (17:26):
Tyson's Tyson is just if he's healthy.

Speaker 2 (17:28):
He's just thirty three years old, just thirty three years
old and played very well I thought in EuroBasket.

Speaker 4 (17:32):
I was surprised to see his name on this one.

Speaker 3 (17:34):
It feels like he always is healthy for EuroBasket and
the net game.

Speaker 2 (17:39):
That's a good not so much, that's a good point.
Cody Zeller, We don't expect. But Tristan Thompson, that guy
always somewhere along the way. He's going to get a
ten days somewhere.

Speaker 3 (17:48):
And Tristan and DeAndre both great locker room guys. You
love having those guys, if nothing else, uh, for the
role they play there.

Speaker 4 (17:55):
Power forwards.

Speaker 2 (17:56):
Twenty six year old bowl bull Jake Chapman is not
on an NBA roster.

Speaker 4 (18:02):
Will he be in the NBA this year? Bulbul?

Speaker 5 (18:04):
No?

Speaker 4 (18:05):
Okay? Interesting? Are we done with the bowler? Coaster?

Speaker 5 (18:11):
Boy?

Speaker 3 (18:11):
It's the old thing, like, how many times do you
got to say it's a bad situation for him? How
many bad situations can there?

Speaker 5 (18:21):
He has a lot of chances.

Speaker 4 (18:23):
At some point, is it?

Speaker 2 (18:23):
Everybody else's faulter is, So we'll see if he gets there.
James Johnson at thirty eight years old, Mike Markeith Morris
thirty five signed with ESPN.

Speaker 4 (18:30):
He may not. Drew Timmy is an interesting one to me.
I think he's gonna end up give me a job
by roster. No, what No, PJ Tucker christian Wood. Does
that surprise you with the Christian would thing?

Speaker 3 (18:41):
No, because once you get to that point, like, if
you're going to be a distraction, you better be worth it.
And he was at one point in time sort of
worth it. But he has been a distraction the entire
entire time.

Speaker 2 (18:51):
Yes he has, Yes, he has small forwards real quick.
We kind of blow through these, Jay Crowder, Tory, Craig Imani,
Bates who we just saw the other night, Kevin Knox,
these Arens James that have kind of made a living
kind of just hanging on kJ Martin was very interesting
to me. Not on an NBA roster.

Speaker 5 (19:06):
Jake, Yeah, you could, I could see kJ Martin landing somewhere.
But boy, if you can't shoot in this in today's NBA,
it's it is a it is a hard road up.

Speaker 4 (19:16):
Malik Beasley shooting guards Malik Beasley.

Speaker 2 (19:18):
Obviously we know the investigations, everything that's gone on with
that and what may come with that.

Speaker 4 (19:22):
But does Malik Beasley end up on an NBA roster?

Speaker 5 (19:25):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (19:25):
I mean the latest update right was there's no criminal anything,
and I'm not sure if the NBA investigation.

Speaker 5 (19:31):
Is still ongoing.

Speaker 3 (19:33):
So until you have complete clarity that he is in
the clear, I don't think he'll get a job. But
if he comes out on the other side of that thing,
then maybe, because Lord knows he's a very talented player.

Speaker 4 (19:44):
Damian League with Steph Curry's brother in law, does he
help him. Yeah, No, that's it. That's it for him.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
Okay, last one point guards point guards that are available,
Markel Fults, does Markel Foltz And we can circle back
on Alfred Payton, Corey Joseph mac McClung. But let's just
fly through these real quick. Marko Fultz. Does he make
it back into the NBA.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
Obviously, I hope so, but I'll refer back to the
shooting thing.

Speaker 4 (20:09):
Yeah, we're really hoping Ben Simmons. Is this it for
Ben Simmons?

Speaker 5 (20:13):
Boy, that one I can't really wrap my head around.

Speaker 1 (20:17):
No.

Speaker 3 (20:18):
I think somebody will gi him a chance if he
wants to play, if he if he's healthy and he
wants to play, I think somebody will give him a chance.

Speaker 2 (20:24):
Twenty nine year old Ben Simmons. They got to think
someone's going to get crazy opportunity to play. But you
never know what career trajectory. I don't know if we've
ever seen anything quite like that. Nothing like that, nothing
like that just just just completely bizarre right from the
get go. How about our buddy Corey. Joseph played well
enough starting point guard going into the playoffs. Somebody's got
to sign Kojo to an NBA roster.

Speaker 3 (20:44):
Kojo, if Kojo's right, if he's if he's ready, you know,
at the blink of an eye, to be in your
in your camp, in your locker room tomorrow. Yes, yes,
then yes he will get a job. I'm not sure
that's necessarily the case. We know we're going ry Joseph
is at this point in his life and career. But
I think Cory Joseph could absolutely help a team for sure.

Speaker 2 (21:05):
Herb Brian Scalabrini. He say, Mac McClung needs to go
to China. Just dominate over there, open everybody's eyes, get paid,
make a ton of money, be a sensation over there,
and somebody's going to sign them. Wouldn't that be a
cool path for Mac McClung, who to me is an
NBA player twenty six years old. That'll do it for
this edition of Magic Insiders again, ninety six to nine
in the game tomorrow is where you can listen to
the Magic and the Pelicans, and we want you to

(21:26):
sign up for that fan dual pass. You can go
to FanDuel directly on the app, or you can go
to Amazon and find it that way. And if you
do sign up for a season pass, pair tickets to
an upcoming Magic game. Talk to you tomorrow, six o'clock
right here, ninety six to nine.

Speaker 4 (21:39):
