Cara Pacetti (00:00):
Welcome to Podcasting QA, brought to you by
the people at Buzz Pro.
I'm your host, Kara Passetti, and I'm bringing you the best
tips and strategies to keep youpodcasting with confidence.
In today's episode, we areanswering the question: How do I
switch podcast host?
To help me answer thisquestion, Kate from our

(00:22):
Podcaster Success team isjoining me.
Kate has been serving ourpodcasters since February of
2024.
She hit the ground running andnow plays an integral part in
keeping up our help articles.
We have many help articles onmany different topics, and Kate
works really hard to make surethat those are always up to date

(00:44):
with the most currentinformation.
And so I appreciate her and I'mso glad that she is able to
help me answer this questiontoday.
So, Kate, thank you so much forbeing here.
Thanks, Kara.
I'm so excited to be here.
Absolutely.
And recently, Kate, youactually updated our help
article on transferring podcasthosts.
Isn't that right?

Kate Chupp (01:03):
Yeah, yeah.
So this is kind of top of mindfor me.
And I'm I'm really excited totalk to our podcasters via a
podcast today about it.

Cara Pacetti (01:11):
Yes, this is not our norm.
We're used to emails in theinbox.
And so this is always fun whenI get to bring on another
podcaster success team memberbecause we get two podcasts.
So it's very fun.
In order to truly understandwhat it means to transfer from
one podcast host to another, Ijust want to provide a little
bit of context around howpodcast hosting works and how

(01:35):
the directories get the contentthat you are adding to your
podcast host.
So if you're brand new topodcasting, you may be a little
bit confused by host.
Well, wait, I thought I was thepodcast host.
And so I want to clarify thatby saying typically, podcasts
are hosted with a podcast hostlike Buzzsprout.
So that's what we are, apodcast host.

(01:56):
There's many podcast hosts outthere.
And what we will do is generatean RSS feed, which is basically
a web page full of code and itstores all of your content.
So when you add audio files, episode titles, podcast titles,
and descriptions, that's allstored in that RSS feed.
And then the RSS feed issubmitted to the directories

(02:20):
like Spotify, Apple,iHeartRadio.
And what happens is thosedirectories will continuously
check this RSS feed for updates.
And so as you add new content, that content will be updated
across all of the directorieswhere your podcast is listed.
And so the benefit here forhosting your podcast with a
podcast host is that you onlyhave to make updates one time.

(02:43):
So you upload one episode, youedit one description, hit
publish, that content will bereflected across all of the
directories that are pullingfrom that RSS feed.
I hope that that makes sense.
Kate, does that kind of paint apicture of how this process
works?
Yeah, that's great.
Okay, so with that context, nowthe process of transferring

(03:04):
host is hopefully going to makea little more sense.
Kate, can you walk us throughthat first step of getting all
of your content moved over fromyour existing host to your new
host, which is hopefullyBuzzBrout?

Kate Chupp (03:17):
Yeah, I would love to.
Okay, so the first step will bethat we take your old RSS feed
and we will copy over twoepisodes into BuzzRout.
This process just lets youcheck out the platform, make
sure that BuzzBrout's the rightfit for you, and just see how
your episodes look.

Cara Pacetti (03:33):
Awesome.
So you're only bringing overtwo episodes.
Meanwhile, your existing RSSfeed is still listed on the
directories and still providingyour content.
Is that right?
That's right.

Kate Chupp (03:43):
Yeah.
When you're ready to make themove to BuzzSprout, what you'll
want to do is upgrade to one ofour paid plans.
And then this allows us to copyover the remaining episodes
from your RSS feed.
So whether you have fourepisodes or you have 400
episodes, we'll be able to copyover all of them into
BuzzSprout.

Cara Pacetti (03:59):
Yeah.
And this process literallytakes minutes.
I I know we've seen this in thesupport inbox and it can seem a
little overwhelming, but I'veseen, like Kate said, 400
episodes and within fiveminutes, they're all over copied
into BuzzSprout.
So we would try to make itreally easy for you.

Kate Chupp (04:16):
Yes.
Something that we recommend inthis process too is to make sure
that you have backed up all ofthe episodes from your old
podcast host and like save thoseto your computer or a device
just to make sure that you havethose saved.
It's always great to have likea backup copy of all your
episodes.

Cara Pacetti (04:32):
That's a great point, Kate.
You definitely want to save allof your work, especially you
work so hard on it.
You don't want to lose thatcontent.
Another thing that is worthbacking up during this process
are your stats.
We cannot grab your stats fromyour previous host.
Actually, no podcast host cantransfer stats.
So, Kate, how do we handle thatduring this process?

Kate Chupp (04:54):
So, even though there are no podcast hosts that
can share podcast stats, we havea way in Buzzsprout for you to
manually import all the statsfrom your previous podcast host.
So you can make sure that we'restill celebrating all of those
milestones that you've alreadyachieved.
After you've copied yourepisodes into Buzzsprout, you'll
see a link to manually add yourstats from your old podcast

(05:14):
host.
And so you'll want to make surethat you have gone and saved or
downloaded all of the analyticsfrom your old host.
And then you can click thatlink in BuzzSprout and upload
all of your previous downloadnumbers.

Cara Pacetti (05:26):
Absolutely.
If you've done all that hardwork before getting here, we
want to acknowledge that andmake sure you're getting all of
the credit for that.
So that's a great point and avery important step in
transferring hosts.
So now our podcaster hascreated a BuzzSprout account and
moved to a paid plan.
They have imported or copiedall of their existing episodes
into their BuzzSprout accountand even moved over some stats

(05:49):
by using that manual link thatyou mentioned.
But the problem here is that wehave one RSS feed on BuzzSprout
and another RSS feed hostedwith a previous podcast host.
So essentially two podcasts.
So, Kate, what are the nextsteps to get the directories to
start pulling from the brand newBuzzSprout hosted RSS feed?

Kate Chupp (06:08):
Yeah, so this process is called redirecting.
It's helpful to think aboutyour RSS feeds like a home
address.
And so right now we're in theprocess of moving and we're
setting up basically like afording address.
So you can make sure your mailgets from your old home address
to your new home address.
This process will make surethat the directories check for

(06:28):
your changes and the newepisodes that you publish and
your Buzzsprout address.
So you get to keep all of yourexisting listings and your
followers and your ratings andreviews.
They'll just update with allthe new changes that you make in
Buzzsprout.

Cara Pacetti (06:41):
That's important to note that this really is all
occurring on the back end.
And the reason that thisprocess is set up this way is so
that there's no interruption toyour existing listings.
So the listeners aren't goingto know that you've even moved.
It'll be business as usual.
They'll see new episodes as youpublish them.
That's the goal here is that wecan just seamlessly help you

(07:02):
move and there's never aninterruption to your existing
listing.

Kate Chupp (07:07):
So what you'll need for this process is your new
BuzzBrow RSS feed.
And we'll provide that in youraccount under the directories
page, and you'll see an RSS tabthere.
And that will be your new homeaddress, your new RSS feed.
So once you grab that RSS feedfrom BuzzBrowl, you're gonna
actually head to your oldpodcast host and place a

(07:27):
redirect on that old feed thatpoints to this new BuzzBrowl RSS
feed.
This process varies from hostto host.
Sometimes there'll be a settingwhere you can add the redirect
directly from your old podcasthost.
Sometimes you might need toreach out to the support team
from your old podcast host toplace the redirect for you.

Cara Pacetti (07:46):
That's so helpful because I do know from
experience, it is not a one sizefits all.
The directions for one podcasthost is not usually the same as
the next.
Now, once all of those stepsare completed, is it just
automatic and now thedirectories will see that?
Or what do you recommend forwhen to cancel the original
hosting account?

Kate Chupp (08:07):
Yeah, great question.
So this is the point where webecome your new podcast hosts.
And so after you place theredirect, you're gonna want to
start posting all of your newepisodes in BuzzSprout and um
making changes in BuzzSprout, and those will show on your
listings.
But we recommend keeping yourold hosting account active for
about two to three weeks to makesure that the directories have

(08:28):
time to learn and to see thisnew RSS feed.
Absolutely.

Cara Pacetti (08:32):
