Speaker 1 (00:09):
It's the middle of the night in March of twenty
twenty one, and at Oklahoma, the police receive a frantic
nine one one call from the home of the beloved
pastor David Evans. It's his wife, Christie. She's screaming someone
shot him. She shrieks into the phone. They shot my David.

(00:29):
When the police arrive at the Evans little brick house,
Christie sits in the living room. Her bare legs are
shaking and her toes bounce on the turquoise carpet. Christy
is a curvy woman with long red hair and pale skin.
She clutches the T shirt she's been sleeping in and
pulls the neck up to wipe her tears between sobs.

(00:52):
We'll be married thirty years this June, she cries, and
she buries her sniffling face into her T shirt again.
One officer makes his way over to the bedroom. He
sees David. The covers are pulled up around him, but
his face is exposed. His head is cranked to the

(01:14):
side and blood has soaked his mop of dark hair.
The thick violet blood has drained down the side of
his temple onto the sheets and is pulling around on
the carpet beside their antique bed frame. David is long
gone from a single gunshot wound to the head. Back

(01:34):
in the living room, Christy sputters out a story she
was asleep when suddenly she heard a loud pop. She
tells the police that she ran out of the back
room to see if an intruder had left on foot
and realized that the door was unlocked. We never leave
that door unlocked, she says. We are diligent about locking

(01:58):
all the doors because there are breakings. Christy hugs herself
to keep from shivering. That she answers the questions being
thrown at her. She realizes she's now a widow. What
well they're small town of Ada think of this? And
more so, what will the members of their church say

(02:20):
when they find out that David has been murdered? Welcome

(02:42):
to sword and Scale Nightmares, True crime for bedtime or
nightmare beginnings. Now, David Evans was not your typical small

(03:17):
town preacher. He was a little controversial and modern. He
talked about taboo subjects that most Christian pastors would steer
clear of, like abortion and sexuality. Probably a good topic
for all of us to steer clear from at a
cocktail party, by the way. But David was big on

(03:38):
marriage and fidelity, often working these topics into his sermons.
He told his parish to stay faithful to their spouses,
but that exploring sexuality wasn't wrong. After all. David preached
that God created our bodies and our sexuality and he
wanted those things to be explored. Kind of a creepy

(04:01):
thing for a preacher to say, but that's just me.
David was born in New Jersey in nineteen seventy. He
was one of six kids and spent most of his
youth free to do whatever he pleased with his time.
Those were the good old days. Just get on a
bike and ride for hours and hours and get home

(04:22):
whenever the hell you get home. David's older brother had
cerebral palsy, so his mother was preoccupied with her special
needs child, leaving the other siblings to kind of roam
free and do whatever they wanted. The family soon moved
to Oklahoma, and by the time that David was a teenager,
he had become a bit of a bad boy. David

(04:44):
wore a leather jacket and he had long hair, and
everyone noticed how cool he was. Christy armor was three
years younger than David, and that only made him all
that more attractive to her when he started crushing on her.
Christy was a waitress at the local drive in, and
David would visit her during her shifts until he worked

(05:06):
up the nerve to ask her for her number. The
two fell in love quickly and made big plans to
get married the very minute it was made legally possible,
so when Christy turned eighteen at the end of May
nineteen ninety one, they got married the first week of June.

(05:27):
The next few years, they got busy starting their family,
popping out three children and moving to Ada, Oklahoma to
lay down some roots. But it wasn't always easy for
David to find work, that is until he was offered
a job at a biblical bookstore in town and found
his calling in the church. David was completely taken aback

(05:51):
with the preachers and deacons that he met at the bookstore,
and soon enrolled in college to become a minister himself.
He studied at night well, Christy took care of the
house and the kids. The Evans family became very involved
in their local church community. After David graduated and worked
his way up the ladder. By twenty fifteen, their kids

(06:13):
had left home and David had been renamed had pastor
at the Harmony Free Will Church. Christy was always by
his side during sermons, helping in any way that she could.
The couple quickly became a staple in Ada. Everyone wanted
what the Evans had. But like I said before, David

(06:35):
was controversial. He talked about sexuality, and some people in
the parish, the boomers, were not too happy with this
hip new pastor who wasn't afraid to talk about private matters.
David would get death threats and some people stopped attending

(06:55):
his sermons. But for every person who wasn't happy with
Dave David's outlook on God, there was someone else who
found it refreshing. Isn't that how everything works? But David
talked about sex a lot because he was very, very
into sex. Maybe he played the perfect cool pastor in church,

(07:20):
but as we've seen many many times before, behind closed doors,
he was a little different. He was a sexual deviate
who wanted to explore anything and everything his wife would allow.
Now that their kids were gone from the house, David
and Christy had the freedom to play out his sexual

(07:42):
fantasies to their extreme. Now, David was a how'd you say,
a bit of a cuckold. Some of you older ladies
in the audience might want to look that word up.
It's fascinating. Just be careful where you end up on
the internet, anyway, to give you a sneak preview, what
he liked to do was watch Christie be with other men,

(08:05):
so he would spend late nights on Craigslist looking for
suitable candidates. Of course, that's when he found one that
would change their lives forever. David and Christy were now

(08:45):
in their late forties, empty nesters with solid jobs at
the church and nothing but time to explore all of
their weird, sexual, depraved fantasies. David had been coordinating threesomes
for the couple and had watched his wife with more
than fifty different men over the course of a few months.

(09:06):
Does that make Jesus a cuckold too? Is he sitting
in the chair in the corner? I know I'm gonna
get letters for this one. David spent a lot of
time on Craigslist hunting for new prospects, and one evening
he found a twenty six year old man named Khalil Square,
who said he was willing to meet the Evans at
a Super eight motel room for an introduction. Now, I

(09:29):
don't have to tell you that no introduction worth having
is ever done at a Super eight motel. That's a fact.
A lot of things I say here are opinion, but
that's a fact anyway. Khalil was young, black, and not
the type of guy you would think would be down
to get in bed with the Evans. He had a

(09:50):
criminal history and had spent four years in prison for
stabbing a guy in a brawl. That's the kind of
guy you pick up on Craigslist, by the way. He
was raised in a good family by loving grandparents, but
had made some very poor decisions early in his life.
He ran with a tough crowd, as they say now here,

(10:11):
he was about to shack up with the town's premiere
Christian couple. Oh boy. Christie was plump, short and curvy,
with distractingly big breasts, but he was also strangely plain.
She had flat bangs and a soft, flabby chin, and

(10:32):
wore too much eyeliner. She looked like someone you'd find
working behind the returns desk at Walmart, for example. Devoid
of sunlight and exercise. David was tall, buff and dorky,
with his pin striped shirts, lapeled leather jacket, and carefully
sculptured gray beard. Who knows what the hell Khalil saw

(10:56):
in them other than you know, a hole. Maybe he
was just maybe he was just really into being that
extra guy in the cuckold fantasy. But nevertheless, the three
met up at a local hotel one day and got
to know each other. And by hotel, I mean motel.
Of course. David extends his hand first, making sure that

(11:19):
Christy is aware of her place in this transaction. As
the two men chat, Christie sits down on the hotel
bed and crosses her legs. Khalil is cute, she thinks.
She feels an immediate attraction to him, and any time
he looks past David at her, she makes sure to

(11:40):
sneak a flirtatious smile at him. Over the course of
the conversation, Christie sits back quietly, working herself into a daze.
She really wants this all to happen with Khalil. He
is so young, so fit, so handsome, so dark, you
know what I mean, So much different than her husband

(12:04):
and all the other men he usually picks for them
to rendezvous with. Christy knows this is just a meet
and greet it wouldn't last long, but she wants to
make sure that she can see Khalil again in case
David isn't that much into him. Christy runs through David's
strict list of rules in her head. He is very

(12:26):
controlling over their sexual affairs. It's very confusing. They are
allowed to sleep with other people, but they have to
use fake names. They aren't allowed to communicate regularly with
the people they have one night stands with, and if
a threesome happens, David is in charge. Christy is just
the plaything. David has always been the dominating one in

(12:47):
their relationship. He is controlling and strong willed, while Christy
is much more mild and agreeable. But now that they've
begun swinging and having their sexual trysts, she's found a
new side of herself. She has blossomed during these debaucherous
affairs and has gained new confidence from the men she

(13:10):
met without David. Funny how that happens. She straightens her
hair back and pushes her chest forward. You know, how
you ladies do You don't have the same tricks as
she thinks about the men she's been with who tell
her that she's fresh and sexy. But at home, David

(13:33):
has become bored of her, like that toy he really
really really wanted last Christmas and no longer plays with.
At this point, he only wants to have sex with
her if it involves another person. His needs are becoming
more deviant and more demanding. Christy is secretly finding her
own way outside their marital home, and Khalil seems like

(13:57):
the kind of young and dangerous type who can free
her from David's control, free her into what exactly. Who
the hell knows, But I'm not sure that rational thinking
is involved here. Something that the meeting with Khalil might
be coming to an end. Christy thinks fast and pulls

(14:19):
a little scrap of paper from inside her purse. She
fishes around for a pen, and behind David's back, writes
her name and cell phone on the tiny scrap of paper.
As David gets up to leave, Christy grabs his hand
and then tucks the folded paper in her other hand.

(14:39):
He follows her husband out, purposely leaving her purse on
the bed. When they get into the hallway, She tells
David she left her purse and runs back to the
room while he waits forgot my purse. She smiles at Khalil.
He smiles back as she grabs it and saunters out.
She drops the piece of paper right at his sneakers,

(15:01):
making sure to catch his eye and raising her brows
before exiting the room. Khalil picks it up and grins.
She is elated. Well. Christy returns to the hallway. David
is waiting, annoyed. Are you ready to go? He asks?
Christie sighs and smiles, yes, my dear. Khalil texted Christy

(15:26):
the next day, and they started talking right away. They
arranged a time to meet when David would be busy
at work, and the sparks flew. Despite their age difference
and the fact they came from completely opposite worlds, they
were both smitten. After one night together, Khalil fell really

(15:48):
hard for Christy. She broke all the rules David had
set out for their affairs. She would text Khalil all
day every day and made sure to face time him
as much as she could. He'd return the favor by
telling her how beautiful she was and how much he
wanted to be with her. Christy hadn't been this adored

(16:10):
in years. She loves being adored. She loves being at
the mercy of multiple men. Her glorious beauty just something
to be admired and pined for. Their affair was going
strong for weeks, and soon David would be going to
Mexico for his missionary trip. Christy jumped at the opportunity

(16:34):
to play house with her new lover, so she invited
Khalil to come to her marital home and you know
the Christian way that she would and uh, you know,
have an affair on her husband's back. Khalil drove an
older model white Mustang, a very distinct car. Ada was

(16:55):
a very small town and you know how busy body
neighbors work notice everything. They noticed his eye catching vehicle
in the Evans driveway that entire week. And yeah, there
was some talk behind the scenes over hedges in the
backyard across the neighborhood. You know how that goes. Christy

(17:17):
and Khalil had a big week together. They had sex,
they ate, they watched films. They were living their best life.
Christy was giving him a taste of what life could
actually be like if you were, you know, in our shoes.
And Khalil was all about it. He wanted every part

(17:38):
of it. He had spent the last four years in prison,
after all, and Christy not only provided him with sexual intimacy,
but this strange motherly figure he had always craved. One morning,
over coffee, Christy brought up David and Khalil really wanted
to be with her. If Khalil really wanted to be

(18:02):
with her, then there was a problem. I think you
know what the problem is. They all had to get
rid of David, get him out of the picture. Gilil,
of course, was stunned by the idea. What exactly did
that mean? Christy said David was far too stubborn and

(18:23):
controlling for divorce and he would never leave her on
his own. The only option was to make him disappear.

(19:08):
Khalil had a violent criminal past, but the idea of
murder was just out of the question, he protested, and
Christie pushed on. David had a two hundred and fifty
thousand dollars life insurance policy. She promised Khalil one hundred
and sixty thousand dollars and that she'd buy him a
new truck. They could live at her house and be

(19:31):
together happily. Ever after, Still Khalil was hesitant to murder David.
Maybe he had a few more brain cells than she did.
Over the next few days, Christie kept pressing the idea, though,
using sex to keep Khalil in her grasp. Finally, he

(19:54):
agreed he would do it. He would do anything for Christy.
She had manipulated him with sex to the point where
he was gonna do whatever the hell she wanted him
to do. And if you're a guy, you understand. She said.
She'd provide the gun and leave the back door unlocked.
She made it so easy. She'd give David a sleeping

(20:18):
pill so he'd be out. It would all work out
just fine. All Khalil had to do was just follow
the plan. You can do that, can't you, Khalil. You
could follow the plan right, Just follow the steps, just
one by one, don't fuck up. So they set a date.
They kissed goodbye and waited for David to return from Mexico.

(20:42):
Now it's the middle of the night on March twenty second.
Khalil waits nervously in his white Mustang around the corner
from Christie's house. It is warm in the car. He
has the heat cranked all the way. He listens to
the low hum of the hot air. He pumps himself
up for what he's about to do. Can he really

(21:05):
do this? He avoids his own reflection in the rear
view mirror. He doesn't want to look at himself. The
streets are quiet, David will be asleep by now. All
he has to do is grab the gun, walk in
and shoot the guy. But his stomach lurches at the thought.

(21:26):
He doesn't know David. He met him once in that
hotel room. That's it. But still he shook the man's hand,
he touched his skin. David his flesh and blood, a
man with kids and a church. Christy has painted an

(21:48):
evil picture of David for Khalil. He's an abusive husband
who calls her fat, ugly, and stupid. He criticizes her
and uses her a sex doll. Khalil clings to this narrative.
He's spellbound by Christy. He loves her with everything, and

(22:11):
that love is the only tool he has to keep
himself focused on the mission. And the mission. Don't fuck
this up is very important, It's everything. He just has
to follow the plant. He takes one last deep breath,

(22:31):
then gets out of his white Mustang. He pulls the
hood up over his head and begins marching towards the
Evans house. The air is cool and fresh on his skin.
His body is pumping with fear and adrenaline. When he
gets to the backyard, he spots the gun Christie has

(22:53):
hidden for him, a nine millimeter. When he touches it,
his fingers quiver. Jilil looks over his shoulder, then reaches
for the handle on the Evans back door and slowly
creeps inside. Christy is waiting for him when he arrives.
She's sitting at the kitchen table in the dark. Hi,

(23:18):
she mouths. Khalil breaks at the side of her. His
entire body collapses. I can't do this, he whispers. I
can't kill him. Christy stands up and flexes her neck. Yes,
you can't. You have to. Khalil feels like a little
boy being scolded. I really, Christy, I can't. Christy walks

(23:46):
closer to him, her eyes penetrate him with a menacing glare.
You can. He is dead, asleep, knocked out from the pill.
Now go. Khalil nods and slowly sneaks towards the bedroom.
He has no choice. There is no other option, There

(24:10):
is no other pathway forward. When he sees David sleeping soundly,
he turns around again his hand he remembers shaking the
man's hand. He backs up into the hallway, but Christie
is right behind him. Khalil protests again. It can't take

(24:36):
a man's life. He tells Christie to shoot him, but
she refuses. She says she doesn't know how to use
a gun. Funny for this mastermind to say that, since
it's only got one button on it, she can't kill
him with one shot. It will take a few and

(24:56):
she will make a huge mess, She says, that will
ruin their whole plan. Khalil has to do this. Do it,
she hisses, do it will never be together if he
is alive. You have to do this. She grabs his
face and kisses him manipulatively. It's going to be you

(25:20):
and me from now on. Khalil gathers his strength and
marches forward. David's legs are visible under the comforter. Khalil
imagines that he's already gone. Maybe that will make this easier.
He walks up as close to David as he can

(25:41):
stomach and points the gun towards his temple. He says
a silent prayer. He closes his eyes, and surveillance footage

(26:04):
of Khalil's white Mustang led the police straight to him.
Christie confessed almost immediately to everything, but she wove a
much different story than Khalil. She told the police that
it was surprise prized all his idea. She's just a
battered woman, of course, an abused wife, a victim caught

(26:26):
in the middle of this bizarre sex triangle that she
had no pardon. Christy told the court that David was
addicted to pornography and sex. She claimed it all started
when they were at a nude resort in Texas, blamed Texas,
and she found David naked in their hotel room with
another man when she walked in the door. She felt

(26:50):
she had no choice but to do what David wanted.
She also claimed that she couldn't divorce David because of
her reputation, plus lost her job at the church, She'd
lose her health insurance, and she needed a kidney transplant.
It was life or death to kill David, but the
life insurance policy money. The messages between Khalil and Christy

(27:13):
as well as the scandalous letters she wrote to multiple
men from jail, all proved that Christy was a manipulative
mastermind who used her sexuality to her advantage. She wanted
David gone for many reasons, and Khalil was just a
man who was left struck enough to do her bidding.

(27:36):
Christy took a plea deal for first degree murder and
was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
Khalil Square also got life in prison, the dumb, sex
crazed idiot that he is. This case shook the town
of Ada, as well as the Harmony Free Will Time Church,

(28:00):
of course, and all those people who question David's odd
teachings now hold their traditional faith the little tighter. They
clutch their pearls a little more. They look more disapprovingly
and outsiders than they may have previously. That's kind of
how that works. I think it's probably safe to say

(28:25):
whoever is leading the sermons at the Harmony Free Will
Church these days isn't on the pulpit on Sunday talking
about sex. If you enjoyed the show, please consider joining
