Speaker 1 (00:11):
Welcome to the Golf in As Bomb Squad.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
I'm your host, Chris Finn, and today we are going
to get into the four different I guess levels of
the golf performance Pyramid that will help you play golf
for as long as possible. But specifically relative to those
four what are the top pieces of equipment that you
should look at having If you don't already in your
(00:33):
arsenal you know, basically, what do you have at home
if you're going to the gym wherever you're doing your
workouts and taking care of your body, and we're trying
to gain speed training, what are the tools you need
to be the most successful. So, at the time of
this recording, this is my list. I kind of came
up with two key pieces of equipment at each level
(00:54):
of the pyramid.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
There's four levels.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
If you've been listening to the pot or any of
the content in the past, hopefully you know those four
levels are. If you haven't, we will go over what
those four levels are as well. So let's start there
and then then what I'll do is I will dive
into kind of zoom into each of those levels, and
we'll talk about the kind of two pieces of equipment
for that level that I think are critical based on
(01:17):
what we've seen from a research standpoint, the success of
our of our clients in the past three in our
sixty five days, and basically what's working right now now,
ninety days from now, this list may be different and
if when it changes, we'll do an updated episode. So
let's get into it. So the first the foundational tier.
So I always talk about the pyramid. Think of it
(01:39):
as like the old school food pyramid that we had
in elementary school, where you'd have like your grains on
the bottom right, and you know, if that pyramid actually
is good or not or right doesn't matter at this point,
just using it as a visual that most people know
what that is at the bottom of the pyramid. The
foundational piece of the golf performance pyramid to play this
game for a really long time, to give yourself the
(02:00):
best chance of longevity. It is the mobility foundation, right,
So it's your ability to rotate in your four roadary centers,
which if you are brand new, are your shoulders, your hips,
your thoracic spine, and your neck. Right, so we'll put
in the show notes, is always the link to the
home assessment where you can actually see how you do
on those four areas. Now, the two key pieces of
equipment on the foundational level. One is actually to help
(02:24):
with the mobility, and that is a softball Ori Leay crossball, right,
So it's literally less than like eight dollars. If you're
getting a really fancy one, you go to a used
sporting good store and get one way cheaper than that.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
But that would be the first piece of equipment.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
And then obviously you would use that to do tissue
work to open up tissue restrictions in and around those joints,
in particular the ball and socket joints of the shoulder
and of the hips. So that would be the number
one piece of equipment for this foundational level to help
with your mobility. Now, the next natural question is, Okay,
I have this ball, what the hell do I do
with it?
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Right?
Speaker 2 (02:57):
Well, that's where you go through the home assessment that
help you to zone into which of the rotary centers
you have the issues with, and then that's obviously where
you know whether it's doing program with us. We have
free on demand type things that you guys can check
out on our YouTube page where you can kind of
get an idea of stuff that you could do.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Obviously, the most.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
I guess optimal or optimized way to do it would
be to actually work with a coach.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
You tell exactly what to do.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
But softball is going to be an integral piece to
your equipment puzzle to improve the mobility foundational level. The
next piece on the foundational level, the next piece of
equipment would be some sort of launch monitor. Now that
you're probably scratching and be like, wait, I thought this
was the mobility side, Chris, Why are the heck are
you talking about a launch monitor? Well, swing speed radar
or a launch monitor is key because at the foundational level,
(03:48):
because if we don't assess, then we're just going to
be guessing as we're trying to improve so very much
so at the base foundational level, if we're trying to
get better and play this game for a long time
in any sort of optimized form, we need to know
how fast were swinging the golf club and we need
to track that over time. Right, even if you're not
doing swing speed training, at least every nine and days,
you should swing the golf club swinger driver, See what
(04:09):
your gamer speed is, see what your all out speed is.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Has it changed? Right?
Speaker 2 (04:12):
If it's if you're going to the gym, or you're
spending time working on your body at home, whatever it is,
and your speed is going down. Something needs to change,
right there needs or there needs to be some sort
of explanation. Maybe you've been playing seven days a week
for the last three months and your body is exhausted,
in which case there needs to be a recovery element
in your workout to help your nervous system recover. Maybe
your diet sucks, Maybe you've lost fifty pounds in that
(04:35):
you lost literally twenty percent of your body mass. Right, well,
guess what I guess if you lost fifty pounds to
twenty percent of your body mass, I guess it be a.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
Big be a big person. So good for you.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
Keep going, Uh, you know if you weigh I mean,
let's just use this, like, you know, we see this
all the time with some of our lady golfers. They're
like one hundred and fifty pounds and they lose ten
pounds or fifty pounds, like they literally lose ten percent
of their body way like, and that's a massive loss.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
When that happens, your clupets speed probably will go down.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Right, So there's nutritional things to think about, right, But
if you're not tracking to know why that if that
cluppet speed is moving or changing, he sometimes will miss
the queue and have an objective measure rather than just saying, oh,
I think I used to hit it out past that bunker.
Maybe it's just not rolling as far today, right, Well,
you could actually measure that. So the two pieces of
equipment at the foundational level of this pyramid for a
(05:28):
longevity are number one, a softball or la crossball. Softball,
I think is a little more versatile. The crossball is
nice for the smaller areas, but the softball definitely can
get deeper into some of the bigger muscles. So particularly
if you're a bigger person and not like necessarily fat
and you just have more muscle mass on you, the
softball will, you know, will dig in a bit more.
If you're a very small person, like very petite woman,
(05:50):
you weigh like one hundred pounds, you know, maybe you're
a junior, then sometimes the crossballs is enough. But softball
is probably the most versatile of those too. So it's
a bottle level pyramid. So let's let's let's level it up.
So we'll go up to the second level after that
mobility is kind of foundationally solid. Then obviously what we're
looking at is your strength and your power. So in
(06:13):
this part of the pyramid, I think two of the
highest rois from an equipment standpoint. Obviously, there's a ton
of equipment out there.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
That you could buy.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
There's the you know, the high end you could go
for like your you know, your tonals, your forms, right,
these big machines that have like the digital element built
in the There's there's tons of those out there, different
versions and variations and companies that are you know, have
different pros and cons. There's like dumbbells, there's kettlebells. I mean,
(06:47):
there's tons of options that you could look at. The
two biggest arbitrages that I think that are out there
for a golfer, UH Number one is a k Pully
by Ecentrics, basically the k Polly based on research that
we've done. If you can train rotary motion in an
eccentric overload fashion, which is what a flywheel does, right,
(07:10):
you pull it out and it's going to pull back harder.
When you do that, you can actually gain speed one
hundred and fifty percent faster than you can with just
bands or regular traditional like if you're doing like a
cable machine, right, So I think that is a massive arbitrage.
I believe those are sub three thousand dollars, so they're
not cheap, but they're certainly not ten thousand dollars like
(07:31):
some of the really fancy equipment. It has a bluetooth
so you can actually connect to your phone and an app.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
You can measure it.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
I think that it doesn't take up a ton of space.
It fits in a home gym very nicely, so if
you're looking for something at home to kind of level up,
I think the k Polly is a very nice arbitrage
in terms of the cost relative.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
To the return that you can get on it. And
it's not just rotary. You can do.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
Pushes and pulls, and there's lots of other variations of
things that you can do on it.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
So that would be my first one that I'd recommend there.
The second I think.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
Would actually be would be power of power blocks are
a phenomenal, particularly at home. This would be more I
guess both of these would be more at home suggestions. Basically,
think of it as like a rectangle of weights that
fit like on one handle and they can go from
like you know, five pounds or two a half pounds
all the way up to like one hundred pounds, right,
So they don't take.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
Up a lot of space.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
So super convenient in terms of home gym setups in
terms of very adjustable, very easy to use, but also
functional in that they don't take up a ton of
space when you're not using them, versus having to get
a massive rack to have you know, five pounds.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
All the way to one hundred pound dumbells.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
So, and I'm not getting any kickbacks, just full disclosure
from any of these companies to do this podcast. These
are just what I've seen work for a lot of
our clients, and so this is what I would obviously
pass along to you listening. So yeah, so Kate Polly
by Eccentric and the Power Blox I think are very
good as well too. Maybe what we should do we
should get an affiliate link, so give you guys a
(09:06):
discount and we get something for it too.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
I don't know. Uh, if you see links.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
In the in the in the show notes, that means
we got your discount.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
And I don't know, maybe we get like five percent
or something. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
We'll see, see we can work out. But regardless, those
would be the two that I that I would check
out for for you guys, think those are two really
cool tools that have a good r OI, good arbitrage
terms of the return that you will get on the investment.
All right, So let's level up. Next level goes to
transfer training, right the core four? How do we optimize
(09:39):
your your You know you've got the strength, you've got
the mobility. Let's move into these next layer of tools.
And this is where I would go to the down
shift board or sorry, the weight shift board and the
U and then the the orange web. I think these
are two tools that you can use and we've been
used them successfully this year help people on weight shifting
(10:02):
as well as feeling sequence right, and I think those
are the two areas we see most commonly that people
struggle with it. We have an upper body dominated golf swing.
Whether it because be because you had no mobility in
the hips and so that was the way you compensated.
And now that you have the mobility of the hips,
you can't figure out how to use the hips. You
don't necessarily know when to apply the weight shift, like
(10:25):
the pressure to the to the lead legs. Maybe do
it late, maybe do it way too early. I think
these are two really cool tools that we have found
that are not incredibly expensive, that you get a lot
of runway on and actually really help people transition into
like really seeing the gains that they've accomplished in their
(10:45):
in their programs. So if you you you know, so
you did the home assessment right, you passed on the
mobility you do you look at all the strength numbers
and you know you're not a ticking time bomb. You
have good strength numbers to support the speed you're at.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
Or maybe you can even go faster.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
And this is where a lot of times we see
some big gains here, you know, getting into the transfer
training with an orange whip or you know the waight
ship boards like those really sometimes are an unlocked for
people that there's like a you know, just a light
light light switch moment and boom, all of a sudden.
There's like we had one guy got like nine miles
an hour speed in like one session right now, that
(11:20):
was after you know, weeks and weeks and weeks of work,
but it just kind of clicked in that one session
and boom, all of a sudden, you went from there
being no speaking to nine miles an hour, which is
more than an.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Average like for a year.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
Right, for you're an average, we'll see you know, five
to seven miles an hour somewhere in there. That's that's
twenty yards. The dude picked up nine miles an hour.
That's like well over twenty yards. So pretty cool stuff
that those two tools can you know, And obviously this
is all when used when used correctly, like use your discretion.
That's that's my disclaimer. But you know, use your discretion
whether if you don't, aren't one hundred percent sure of
(11:53):
how to use these tools, get with an expert who
can help you, and obviously we can do that with
you here. There's lots of other people out there that
can help you too, but this is what we have
seen work for us and for our clients. The final,
the tip of the pyramid is the actual speed training. Right,
so you've got the mobility, you're strong enough to handle
the speed. Maybe hopefully you can handle more speed. Your mechanics,
(12:17):
kinematics like your core four movements in your swing, you
got speed out front, you're weight shifting correctly, et cetera,
starting with your hips.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
All that's good.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
That would just want to just learn how to go faster.
So that is the number one thing that I would recommend.
There would be the Stack System. If we're looking at
a speed training system, I would look at the Stack
System because of the algorithm science backed like process that
they have in terms of knowing if your nervous system
is fatigued and we need to downshift it a little
bit today, if it's ready to go and rearing, we
(12:47):
can upshift into heavier loads if you need to focus
more on heavier loads versus lighter loads based on where
you fall in the speed continuum. I think it's just
it's the smartest speed training to that's out there. So
I would definitely recommend the Stack System. The other one
I'm throwing the throw in here as a bonus at
kind of the tip of the pyramid would be the
(13:08):
Mustard Golf app. It's an AI backed app. We've been
doing a ton of testing with it. I think there's
a ton of value in it, and just in knowing
their team and where they're going with it, I think
the path is really really bright for AI in golf
swing analysis. But the one thing that's nice about the
Mustard app is that actually takes into consideration your body
(13:29):
gives you some actual gratings and you know, in terms
of what's going on in your swing, what's going on
you know with your body. Justin Rose and Mark Blackburn
are heavily involved with a lot of the golf side
of things, and again it gives you suggestions of drills,
of ways to kind of address the things that it's seeing.
So it's objective, it's measurable, it's repeatable, all things that
(13:51):
I like and that we like a part success in
terms of the having kind of that data gear you know,
data back to kind of gearhead mentality.
Speaker 1 (14:00):
So hopefully found that helpful.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
That's kind of two products for each of the tiers
of the longevity pyramid that we kind of operated and
we found that from a science based standpoint, really has
yielded some really really cool results. This year, we're actually
in the in the process of tabulating how many yards
h you know, p f US golf golfers have gained
and it's well over ten thousand, which is which is
(14:23):
really really cool this year.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
So anyway, hopefully you find that helpful. Guys.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
I said, if we can get you, guys any discounts,
we will put the links in the in the show notes,
obviously there'll be the link to the home assessment that
we want, definitely want you to take there, and we'll
try to get you, guys as big of a discount
as we can on any of those other products. If
you are interested in grabbing any of those, those are
definitely ones that that I would recommend.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
And then at.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Full disclosure, if there's a link there, we probably are
getting like a five percent kicker on that. But we
don't partner with anybody who we don't believe in, so
these are these are companies we wouldn't do that with.
So anyway, hopefully you find that helpful. Hopefully that kind
of maybe if he hadn't heard of any of the
you know some of these products, go do some research,
check them out. If you guys have other products that
(15:11):
you like that were not included, I would love to
hear about them. We do a bunch of testing in house.
There's a bunch of other equipment that we've tested this
year that actually.
Speaker 1 (15:20):
Was good, just didn't put on the list.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
I just thought these were the more cost effective and
user friendly options than some of the.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
Stuff that we've tested.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
But if there are other piece of equipment that either
you like that you think we should check it out
that was on this list, or things that you got
other questions, Hey, could you check out this and let
us know how it is? Bounties, Let let me know
because we got the facility here, we got the people
to try it, and we want to make sure you
have the best pieces of equipment to play this game
as long.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
As possible, because why else would be we why else
would we be doing this. So thanks always hanging out
with me here on the golf in this bom spot,
and
Speaker 2 (15:53):
We'll look forward to catching him on the next episode.
