At the beginning of the investigation it was assumed that Shipman began his murderous activities in general practice in Todmorden and later in Hyde. A few inquiries were carried out initially by the Shipman Inquiry into his time as a hospital doctor, particularly after the relative of a patient who died in his care at Pontefract came forward. But there appeared to be no obvious evidence of any crime in the hospital, other than his own abuse of drugs in the six months prior to him leaving. It was initially a fair presumption that he was not killing, bearing in mind it is much harder for a doctor in a hospital to be alone with a patient than it is in general practice, and it would also be harder for him to obtain controlled drugs.
