(00:08):
Welcome to this watch live hi. I'm Lydia Winters.
And I'm Boo Boo. And today I'm taking you to shop
housing. Taking everyone but me just.
Like last time, no, you get to go.
Along this time I get to come you.
Get to hear about it because OK,so we were invited by our
amazing AD here in Stockholm, Neumanzer to head out with IWC.
(00:31):
Yep, to visit them in Chafhausen.
Poor Vu, he has a job. Which you used to have a.
Job, but conveniently. Very quickly, you're like, yeah,
I don't have fun. Well.
Conveniently, this is during my,you know, creative sabbatical
and so I immediately said yes. Those dates are after I've
(00:54):
resigned, so let's do it. I'm in my yes stage and this was
awesome. I know I was on a trip and it
was me and all guys. My friend said I looked like the
mascot because I was always the one, like smiling in the front,
Like yay, we're here. I mean, obviously I.
But that's you in any group. Exactly.
(01:14):
Here's the thing. I I'm unabashedly excited and I
was the whole time. It was super cool.
I got to wear my IWC 37 O 6A watch that I've continuously
said I will sell. And never have.
Actually haven't done it. Towards selling.
It and I will say wearing this pilot's chronograph on the trip,
(01:35):
I got so many compliments both from the, the group I was
travelling with and everyone at IWC and now I'm like.
Well, it's also a special watch because you know, that one went
to Japan, you bought it in Japan, brought it to Sweden, and
now you brought it. Home, I know I, I did think that
was pretty I was like you're coming home a little watch and
then I'm taking you back but OK,super cool.
(01:58):
We've obviously been well since I got my IWC actually that's
that kind of started me liking IWC.
I didn't know too much about it before.
So this trip was amazing becauseit was like, I mean, a deep
dive, you know, it, it's a, it'sa 40 hour trip basically.
We left really. Early.
(02:20):
We left really early in Stockholm and then in the
afternoon we started a watchmaking class.
Which was the. Same day that we left and it was
amazing. You will see photos on at this
Watch Life podcast and our Instagram.
And I had so much fun being a watchmaker.
(02:42):
Yeah, we got to wear the coats and said IWC on it.
Like wait but. You didn't get to keep them.
No, of course not. I guess not.
They don't want you can't, you can't just walk around cosplay.
There's an IWC I'm not like. I'm an apprentice now.
Hello I. Work here now.
It was the room was beautiful. It was really cool.
We had this amazing watchmaker named Roy.
(03:04):
He was teaching the class. We had apprentices who were
amazing. They were helping us out.
I would say I have done one other class before, a
watchmaking master class with Neiman's in Stockholm.
And that was on a big like pocket watch style.
Movement yes and the very first thing that happened is I've told
the story before but just so we remember where I came from very
(03:27):
first thing that happened is that I like just pushed too hard
and things were like bling and then.
Flying one. Of the watch, fingers came over
and like, you know, hushed, Whisper said.
You have to be careful and that kind of you got in.
Trouble at. Your yeah immediately so in
this. One in trouble in this class.
(03:48):
No. So in this one, I was like, you
know what I have, I've already prepped for this moment.
Like I'm, I'm ready to be an IWCwatchmaker.
So I was very, very excited. I did do one thing, which is one
of the apprentices. She was standing right in front
of me and I went I. And a real apprentice, not a.
Complaint a real apprentice and I was taking out a screw and it
(04:10):
definitely just pinged like up in the air and I looked down at
my shirt and I looked at her andwe both were like that is gone
forever. So she got me a new one with no
judgement, though. It was very nice.
That's awesome. But the whole class was awesome.
Most people, it was their first time trying it.
I will say I had a leg up because of trying this before.
(04:31):
Yeah, and I was one of the firstones done in class.
I got like an A+ did. You.
Yes. Were they grading it?
No. Oh.
You gave yourself. AI gave myself a day one.
Is this the former teacher? Yeah, but Roy, the Which maker
also said I did a great job. So.
And I got a certificate, as did everyone, but still I felt like
(04:53):
it was an A. Bunch of certificate first
because you finished. 1st no, I did not, but I felt very excited
and it was also pretty cool, youknow, to be in this group of all
guys and I'm just like click Oh yeah, I'm done mine's running so
then I just got to walk around and take cool photos later I
found. Out take really cool photos.
(05:13):
One of the coolest things that Ifound out on the trip is that
Roy, the watchmaker of my class, recognized this voice in the
class because he listens a ton of Watch podcast while he's
working and so. And this happens to be 1 of.
Them, yes. So that is pretty cool.
So by Roy, actually. Recognized your voice, like he
(05:36):
heard your voice and he's like, I know that.
Yes. And then he asked someone, oh,
does Lydia have a podcast? Because I recognize her voice.
And then that person said no, which was not true at all.
And then later, yeah. So then it needs to be, yeah.
So, but you rectified that. Yes, via Instagram.
And I was like, OK. Thanks random person who doesn't
(05:57):
know. Who said no?
But it's OK. You know what?
Sometimes you're just like, no. Maybe you just don't look like a
podcaster. I know I have a face for.
For television. OK, so watchmaking class.
Amazing. I'm now a certified IWC
watchmaker. I'm pretty sure.
What? That's what they said.
(06:18):
Yeah. Yeah, like don't ask anyone.
You can repair any IWC watch in the world, yes.
So I basically I'm doing my own home repair on my 3706.
I'm definitely not, it's just a joke.
You you still got to get to the point where you're comfortable
changing every bracelet. Yeah.
So we'll do. That for much better about
(06:39):
changing straps now, yes, but not bracelets.
No, so we'll start there before I start popping that case back
off like my dad does and taking movements out of watches.
OK. The thing I love about when I
get to go somewhere that's like the headquarters for a brand,
(07:00):
that is the purest expression ofthe brand.
It's not a boutique store. It's like this.
I mean, this is like them in their element, living out like
everything IWC and you get to see it all.
Not all of it, but we got to seea lot of stuff.
Not a lot of photos were allowedto be taken.
Oh, so secrets my eyes had to record.
(07:21):
Click, click, click. Oh yeah.
Do you mean memories? Yes, memory photos.
Not that you have like bionic cameras in men, no your.
Eyes. We had an amazing woman,
Gabrielle, who was with us the whole time and she was so
knowledgeable. She's been at IWC for 17 years.
She knows like everything. Which was amazing because I was
(07:42):
just taking notes, like just handwriting notes the whole
time. I mean, I don't, because for me,
that's how I remember things. Yeah.
And now today I'm just have my notebook and I'm gonna tell you.
Like science proves that if you write things down as you hear
them, then you remember them better.
And I did science said that, then I just said facts the whole
rest of the time that she had said like I just quoted them to
(08:04):
be like, I know. The thing is, I've always been a
little goody 2 shoes like teacher's pet.
So I can't help it. I am.
Paying attention. I am what I am.
Oh, you know. You definitely are what you.
Are but that is what I did. It was very cool because she
went through like before we actually went to the the factory
tour, like which was the second day we sat down in their cool
(08:27):
boardroom. And then she took us through
like the history of IWC, which for me is like very exciting
because before you see everything, it's like, what is
the brand? Very cool.
Like the founder. I didn't realize actually that
he was an American watchmaker from Boston.
Yeah, 27 years. Old.
Yes, the original founder, Florentine Jones, they also
(08:48):
showed us a really cool video, which I hadn't seen, probably
because it came out in 2020. And, I mean, that year was just
a blur. Yeah.
I mean we watched a lot of stuffin 2020, yes.
Can't remember most of it. Exactly, but they made a film
with James Marsden as the founder.
FA Jones like this cool. I mean like an actual like
(09:09):
Hollywood style like. Short short film.
I have seen it. It is a short film, but okay.
It's a short film that kind of reads almost like a trailer for
a full movie. Which was really cool.
But I mean, The thing is, and I think it's pretty cool, they
were very transparent. Jones, the founder, he was a
brilliant watchmaker, but he wasterrible with money.
(09:32):
That's. Kind of.
That's what the movie's about. Yeah, and that's.
Or a short film. And that's why then IWC went
through a period of many years of like being bought and sold by
different, different companies until they actually ended up
with Richmont in 2000, which obviously was the most natural
home. Because many of the other
companies that they were workinglike that they were under the
(09:53):
umbrella of were like producing car instruments.
And it was like they were trying, you know, telecom,
everything, anything and everything.
So to me, I was, it was nice to see that like history and
understand the progression. And also something I did not
realize until I got there is that IWC has five watch like
(10:15):
families, 5 watch lines. And that is the Portofino, the
pilot's watch, the Portuguese are the Aqua timer and the
Ongenuer. And like that is what everything
they make is like within those lines.
And I, I felt like that was verycool because I some brands have
many, many, many, many lines andit, this is kind of them going
(10:38):
back to their history. And he's like really cool watch,
watch lines. My favorite is the pilot's
watch, probably. Well, I mean, you own one.
Actually, when we were in the museum, which this is not the
point of the museum, they have abeautiful site where you can
actually visit a museum. I was just like shopping for
vintage watches. So I was taking a photo and then
(10:59):
taking a photo of the reference number and then looking them up
on Corona 24 and. Which was your what?
Like Which one really stood out to you?
My favorite was that there is a really adorable 29mm IWC pilot's
watch automatic. I want it so much.
(11:19):
That's cool. Like because I have this dream
that I'll wear all the tiny versions.
So you have a Tudor mini sub. Yeah.
And you have a tiny pilot's watch and.
Basically whenever I'm in a roomwith, you know, someone very
high up in the brand and then they're like, no, but we don't
make those just like whip out mywrist and say look at this like
(11:42):
you. Look at this, you can you can do
it again. Don't tell me you.
Can IWC they keep all the drawings forever so I know they
can. Also, technology has gotten
better. We're better at miniaturization
now. Yeah, exactly.
So it was really cool to get to go to the beautiful factory.
They like it is really. I mean, they're doing
(12:02):
manufacturing at such a high level and don't have any photos
of it, but there's probably tonsof them online because obviously
some of it's secret. But it was very cool because
their CEO, Chris, also, he has abackground as an architect, so
he helped design the building. It's won awards.
I mean, it was gorgeous. It really was just a beautiful
(12:25):
place and you can see that for them it's very much about
engineering. Like they're like we have the
like cutting edge technology andthis is what we're like known
for and this is what we want to do.
Now I feel a kinship with Chris Granger, CEO, because, you know,
if you come to our house, you can sit in a chair that I made.
(12:48):
So like, you know, basically it's the same thing.
You know, he was involved in thedesign of the building and I
made a chair and you can sit in that chair.
It works and everything. Yeah.
One of the things I really liked, we got to see a lot of
the different cases. Yeah, I'm, I'm just, yeah, I'm
just moving straight along. One of the things I really liked
is that we got to see this awesome, like all these
(13:11):
different cases that they had made.
And then there was this tiny 1 and it was actually from a
Porsche ladies watch or the Porsche IWC collaboration.
It was a titanium case. It was recreated from old
blueprints because a woman like broke her case somehow.
They were like, we didn't even know how.
So when they made her a new casefor her watch, they actually
(13:33):
also made a few more that they show around because immediately
I was like, there's a tiny case.I know you can do it.
Make the movement, put it in. 29millimeters.
I want it so. So I want that watch so much
that I'm like, nervous. It's funny because you only own
like 2 sub 30mm watches. There's something just like, I
(13:53):
mean, one time we had a friend over and he was like, Lydia, I
always think of you when I see like an, a small container.
And I was like, why? And he's like, because one time
you said, Oh, I want to have a, a like a party.
And it's only tiny things. And I was like, did I say that?
Wasn't it things in tiny jars? Yeah, foods in tiny.
(14:14):
Things in tiny jars and I was just like, it does sound like
something weird that I would say, but I didn't.
It's my nightmare. Yeah.
Because I like big quantities ofone thing.
And I want tiny jars. Of many different.
Things, but mainly I want a 29mmIWC pilot's watch.
Yeah. That would be pretty cool.
OK, seeing everything was awesome.
(14:36):
We were like speeding through, you know, like this is a day
where you're just, you're moving, you're moving quickly.
We got to go up to the design studio.
We were not able to like go all the way in because there were a
lot of secrets around which I was like, oh, secrets.
But we were able to speak with Yanni who was actually, he is
(14:58):
one of the designers who was working on like leading the
family for the Portuguese airline, which obviously so many
cool ones came out and he was awesome.
He was wearing a 36 millimetre entrepreneur.
It looked so cool on him. I love.
That one, you took a really coolpicture of that.
Yes. And I was very excited because
he knew my Instagram account, soI was like, and he was so cool.
(15:21):
So obviously I was like, OK, well, yeah, these awesome IWC
watchmakers and designers, like know me when they're so cool.
So then I felt a little cooler. It is.
That is my favorite. So.
So that photo you took of that Anjanur, it might also be
because he looks so cool, but that is my favorite Anjanur I've
(15:43):
ever seen. Yes, yeah, it's really cool.
It's so cool. I will tag him in the photo so
you can also go follow him. He loves small vintage watches,
which was very cool and also like very interesting because he
was saying how vintage pieces really inspire his design.
And like that each designer there who's working on a family
line, they, they are looking at all different inspiration points
(16:07):
And I, I think that's I, I wanted to stay there forever.
Just like leave me in the designdepartment.
I have 1000 questions. And then we got to go up and see
every watch that's in their current collection.
So it's like over 100 watches just like sitting on a table.
It's like. Families, yeah.
(16:27):
It was like over 100. I don't know the exact number.
I don't think I wrote. It did you?
Just make that in my notes. No, no, no.
I know it was over. But, you know, when there's that
many watches on the table, you don't.
You're just like, OK, now I'm looking at watches.
Yeah. And then I have a friend at IWC
who's doing their storytelling, Maurice, and he came and showed
(16:49):
me around the marketing department.
I actually got to go in their podcasting booth, which was
really cool. They took an old container that
they've used for one of their brand events and turned it into
an awesome podcast studio. You need to do a lot of sound
treatment in a shipping container to make that a good.
Yes yes, you definitely when youyou might die if you record too
(17:13):
long, there's no air, but also they.
Didn't really they put in ventilation?
No, they did. They did have ventilation, but
you have to turn it off for recording, as we know.
And so then suddenly you're in this space.
But it was awesome. I mean, many have the same
things that we have in our little, little podcast studio.
It's like, yes, VU has, yeah, wehave that, that, that we have
(17:37):
that, we have that. Yes, we have a professional
podcast studio podcast. Studio is the same as IWC one.
Makes sense to me. Another thing that I was
thinking about when when I was there and especially when I was
talking to Maurice is that it's easy to forget as enthusiasts
that all of the watch brands arealready so deep into watches and
(18:01):
wonders that that I mean, they are based like all of their new
they. It's kind of like as soon as you
do the release, we know this from our big show, you're kind
of like immediately need to start on the next one.
And it's interesting to think about how they had all of these
amazing Portuguese or year like gorgeous watches and then all of
(18:24):
a sudden it's like time to to move on.
Yeah. And I don't know what the new
family will be, but I'm very excited about it.
Yeah. So I mean, not a new family.
Sorry. This is.
I thought that was some kind. Of like, no, I meant OK, I am
absolutely not just. Like wait, you got to find out
(18:45):
about a new? Family.
No, I meant I don't know which of the families will be.
Focused on OK, which of the fivefamilies?
Which is the five families the next, but we can say the focus
is not Portuguese or so we're down to.
Four by process of deduction. Yeah, I mean, I would be pretty
stoked if it was an on genur line like more, you know, 'cause
(19:07):
they've already done, but. They did on genur like two
years. Ago, yes, but they only released
the three colorways and the one case size, so there's a lot more
to explore there. Or maybe we get an IWC pilot's
watch. 29 million Oh. Do you think that's the most
likely? I think that's the most.
Likely we are going to take nextweek off.
(19:28):
We are and we are letting everybody know, yes, this is
your official notice. Next week.
Next week. Off we are.
Then we're back, but then we're back Monday after that.
I can't think of the date right now, but we'll be back, so we
will not be gone for a long timeagain, we promise.
Yes, and a big thank you to Neiman's and IWC for bringing me
out and showing me everything. It was awesome.
(19:48):
An awesome, awesome trip. And for inviting me even though
I didn't. Get.
Yeah, well, that ends on a sad note, but luckily it's Friday so
we can sing people Missed it. Bye.
Bye bye, bye bye bye, bye, bye bye.
Bye bye, bye, bye, bye, bye. Bye.
Bye bye, bye, bye, bye. Bye.
Bye. Bye bye bye bye bye, bye, bye
bye. Bye, bye, bye.
