(00:08):
Welcome to this Watch LIVE. Hi, I'm Lydia Winters.
And I'm Boo Boo. And today we're talking about
the GPHG Awards. They happened the last Wednesday
night, and I was live. Well, not live, I was there.
Well, you. Were live.
Well, I was present, but I'm it's not live.
It's not live from there. No, not this episode.
However, However, you do show upon the live streams that they
(00:32):
streamed. Yes, we'll, we'll get to that in
a few minutes. But okay, to set the stage, I
was very excited. I went down to Geneva for,
especially for the GHG awards, which I was invited to, and I
was obviously just excited because, I mean, so many people
were there. Yeah, you're watching.
(00:52):
I mean, people call it like the Oscars of watchmaking.
I think that's, you know. I think the way they produce the
show they want it to. Be the Oscars of watchmaking.
And also my bestie, Britt Pierce, came in town for the
day. She was with IWC, and it was
just so fun. We were just immediately like,
well, yeah, so I was already high on life.
(01:16):
So like, even before I got to the award show, I was living my
best life in Geneva. There.
OK, There's an important thing to note, though, about this
trip. What it's like this marked?
The true. Momentous occasion.
That's true. That was promised on this
(01:36):
podcast. Yes, actually it was and many
people have followed up people. Have followed.
Up and most they did not let. Me off the hook on this one.
Yes, Vu said in one of the episodes.
Yes, many moons ago, many moons that I could in fact borrow.
Yes, his watches. He just hadn't picked a watch I
(01:57):
could borrow or allowed me to borrow.
Well, OK, allowed makes it feel way worse.
You've never asked to borrow thewatch and I said no, you're not
allowed. That's never.
Happened. No, no, no.
OK. But there's just been a mutual
understanding. That's either asked or get
offered. Exactly.
There were no offers and on I. Asked.
(02:20):
I finally asked because I. Said yes.
Here's the thing. Look, I've been together who and
I've been together for 13 years.That's.
A long time. And so I know him very, very
well. And I was like, wait a second,
If there was ever a time I couldborrow a watch that you the, it
(02:40):
would be impossible for you to even slightly contest like,
well, I was like, I have it. And so I said Boo, I'm going
down to the GPHG awards and yourwatch is nominated.
Your your beautiful baby. You're a tsuka low tech.
(03:03):
Could I wear it? Because wouldn't it be cool?
Which was also my favorite watchat the time.
Still is. Yes, you have been wearing it
non-stop. So this was like a big request,
but I was like, imagine me and the crowd like I painted this
picture. I'm wearing it and they win and
and Gerald goes on stage. Like just imagine that, Boo.
(03:25):
You have the watch. I have the watch on.
And so all night. In the room all night wins.
All night I'm like, look, look, winner and so.
Spoil alert. No, I was saying if that
happened. No, I'm saying spoiler yes he
won. Yes, so I got to borrow the
watch. I wore it for this occasion
(03:47):
only. I was very happy.
Lots of people were very excitedto see it before the event.
And I also wore my Tutor BB 54 because I was sitting at the
gala dinner with Tutor and. You were invited to their.
Table. But so get to the award show I
have, you know, this kind of random seating where you, you
(04:11):
know, this big area where you just find a seat.
I pop into a seat. Oh, are those you know, is that
open? Can I sit there and all of a
sudden I look over and one seat away is Mr. Rob Nuts from the
real time show. 14180 people in there and.
And you end up right next. To right next to Rob.
So it's really fun. It's like maybe that was the
(04:33):
podcaster section and I don't know it now.
I know I was in the podcast section.
OK, so the show starts. It's all in French.
This is debated in the watch world, so I'm not going to go
into that, but the whole show's in French.
I have a little headset on. I'm listening to the
translations and, you know, theyhave some people playing music.
(04:56):
They start, you know, they're thanking everyone for being
there, the jury, all of this stuff.
We're not going to go into the inner workings of how this all
gets calculated. You can watch the live stream on
GPHG's YouTube channel. Yes.
Vu was riveted by the live stream well.
Not exactly. OK.
So for me, I thought I will kindof get the feel for the crowd
(05:22):
and kind of you feel out like isit a cold?
Is it like a? Soft clap.
Soft clap, is it like an exciting you?
Know anyone whistle? I'm always very excited, so I
know I'm probably like the higher level of energy.
So you want to see what the level of energy exists first
before you decide how much higher than that to be yes.
(05:45):
Yeah, and they give you this book booklet with all of the
different watches in it. It's the same booklet that I got
when I visited the museum where I got to.
They had all of the watches on display, which was super cool.
And it really gave me a different view on a lot of the
watches. But basically there was no order
of what was going to happen. Yeah.
And all of a sudden they got on stage and they were like, and
(06:07):
we're doing the Challenger award.
And I was like, wait a second. And before I could, even before
my brain could even like drip, drip, drip compute what was.
Happening. Your brain sounds like when it
computes joop joop joop. I think that might be the issue.
Before I could even like, beforeI could even gather my thoughts.
(06:28):
Yeah, the Otsuka low tech was onscreen and I was screaming like
I won. I mean, I'm not even
exaggerating. You can ask Rob Nuns.
We don't have to ask Rob Nuns. So I rewound the live stream and
I cranked up the volume just a little bit, and the moment they
(06:49):
announced the Otsuka Low Tech asthe winner of the Challenge
Watch prize, you hear a person in the crowd.
It's not the team. And it it, it is not Jiro
Katayama, the creator of the watch.
I was. Just so excited for them.
I was excited for you. I was excited to be wearing.
(07:09):
It's amazing. I was there.
I. Just love that you were like,
I'm going to wait and see what the energy is.
Like. And then they announced the
first one and you scream at the top of.
Your I just was like and it justkept going.
It was like very deep. And everyone.
Breaths every. I've heard of that it.
Was true. It was true.
It didn't stop. And everyone in my section
(07:31):
turned around and looked at me and was laughing and then I was
just kind of like holding my. You You held up your wrist.
Hold up my left hand and I was like like look, look, look and
then. There's the reason I'm yelling.
He tells the most beautiful or like he he has the most
beautiful speech about, you know, watchmaking in Japan and
how he had been so far away to be at this beautiful night with
(07:53):
all surrounded by all of these like amazing, incredible people,
to be honest. And it was so I was like, I was,
you know? Screaming I.
Was happy, I was crying. I was like, I have had the full
range of emotions and we've beenin here for 10 minutes.
What? What was amazing to me about
(08:14):
watching this watch win and watching Jiro Katayama go up and
accept this award and read his speech is that I read in an
interview sometime earlier this year.
And I don't remember where the interview was or you know,
anything about it except what hesaid.
And in it he, like the interviewer, had asked something
(08:37):
like what what do you really hope to achieve?
And he said, well, one thing I would really, that would like
really make, make all of this because he's been making these
watches for over 12 years, right?
I I want to be recognized by theSwiss watch industry And like if
this isn't recognition. Yeah.
This is. A huge recognition I got.
(09:00):
I waited after to say congratulations, I have a photo,
I'll post it on our Instagram ofme and him wearing wearing his
watch. And it was just so, yeah, I
mean, to me, even though the rest of the award show was
wonderful, it was super cool. You're seeing like people that
you've only seen online. I mean, really, it was like it
was stars of the of the industryon stage.
(09:24):
And it was just so cool. And so it was the first time of
the night that I kind of embarrassed myself.
And it was not. But the fun embarrassment.
It was not the last. Well, it wouldn't be a Lydia
winter. 'S night OK, I here's the
everyone who's listened to this podcast, they know that you you
(09:45):
know enough about me to know that I like I'm I'm not I'm not
a play at cool no. You're not trying.
To be cool I'm not, but I think you know, luckily sometimes in
my online person maybe maybe youknow maybe I if.
Someone mistakes you maybe. Someone mistakes me at school,
but it turns out, it turns out I'm just excited.
My, my second embarrassing thingof the night was, you know, I'm
(10:08):
going up to the Galva dinner, which I've been invited to sit
at the tutor table. It's a, it's much, much more
intimate. So I was like, wow, this is so
exciting. I'm in the elevator by myself.
I'm like, OK, good. I have a second to go up.
Then someone just kind of like puts their hand in the door to
get in and it's Danielle Dufour. And I was like, then I was just
like, hi, I'm a big fan. Like ohh that's so embarrassing.
(10:32):
It's funny because you've workedliterally in Hollywood.
I've been with. Sorry and.
I've never told anyone I'm a bigfan.
I what I meant to say was like what you're doing for women in
watchmaking is really incredibleand I.
Came out in a much shorter. Yeah, I'm a big fan.
And then she was like, oh thing, you know, I when I was like,
wow, OK, so that was time #2 time #3 was just like getting to
(10:56):
the tutor table. I'm sitting with their
incredible designers who we had actually met at Watches and
Wonders briefly. And I was just like, oh, I'm
such a big Tutor fan. Like, you know, just like
listing. It was like just when you list
all facts as someone who literally designed it.
(11:16):
Yeah, you're like. Did you know the BB 54?
And I was just like showing everyone the engraving on the
back like this says team, it's from my partner.
Yeah. I also talked about like the
mini sub. And I was like, I want a mini
sub. So I was like, not at all.
Like, again, zero chill in this lady.
But it was lovely. And also, I finally got to meet
(11:39):
Cole Pennington, who was formerly Houdini has moved to
Geneva to work at Tudor. And it was so nice to finally
get to spend time with him. And just again, this room of
incredible people, you're just like CE OS of companies are
walking around just like I don'teven I didn't even look at
wrists like what watches people were wearing because it was like
(12:01):
a little too overwhelming. And just the whole time seeing
people that I knew from online, whether like had met them in
real life before or had only like, it was actually just the
whole time was a bit of a like blur starting from the 2nd that
I screamed. But that.
You know I'm. Really happy you did that
(12:22):
because that watch winning obviously to me is a big deal.
I was rooting for it and and it was up against great watches.
Yeah, so I. Think so.
It's not even like it's like, oh, this is the only obvious
winner. It was up against some really
cool watches and I, I think overall in the GPHG almost every
(12:43):
category, I was like a little bit torn on what should win.
All right, Some of my favorite categories.
I, I was also excited for the Petit Agui watch prize because I
saw the Kudoke 3 Salmon. Which one?
I saw it at HCI when we were at Watches and Wonders and I talked
to Steven and EV about it and they showed me how it worked and
(13:05):
what they were thinking about when they designed it and it was
super cool. I wanted to go say
congratulations to them, but it was posed to Daniella situation
with just saying like I'm a big fan and I was like, you know
what, I'm gonna let them just. Enjoy but.
You met them, I know, but it wasso.
It was so briefly so. I think you would have.
I know, I know. I don't think so though, 'cause
(13:26):
I would have been like, Oh my God, you.
Won and then for men's watch prize there were two watches.
I was really. Into.
Yes, one is of course the Haji Mea Sahuka Tsunami Art Deco.
Yes, amazing watch, and we got to see that watch at HCI as
well. And then the Grand Chico SLGW
Double O3, which I'm still considering buying.
(13:48):
Yeah. So when I.
Either of those one, though? No, very.
Sadly, but some of the winners that I feel that I was really
excited about and again because. You got to see.
I got to see them at the museum, which was really cool.
They actually had, and I'll postthis on our Instagram, this
Watch Life podcast. It is definitely coming back to
life, the Instagram. But they had a great display
(14:13):
where you could, they had a mirror so you could see all of
the the back, the back, the backs of the watches and it made
a really big difference on some of them.
You were like, oh, there's nothing there, which made it
feel a little more. Specifically, you sent me photos
like you were so excited about the letterer.
Wow, yes. So the thing about this watch is
it looks very simple. It's time only it's a super
(14:36):
simple watch. Not a simple name.
No. The the name of the watch is the
three Times Certified Observatory Chronometer.
No, that is not a simple name, but I will say that the movement
and the way they have the sapphire case back that kind of
is actually rounded goes around the movement, you know, so you
(15:00):
can see. Even sapphire case back that you
would typically you see that type of doming over the dial,
but you rarely if I I don't knowif I've ever.
I don't think I've ever seen it.Watch before.
And it like stunned me. So when they won, it was just so
lovely. He and his wife went up.
It was really beautiful. But yes, that one, I was so
(15:23):
excited about the win. Yeah, I mean, there there were
other cool watches that won somethat were a little bit more
obvious, like the Piaget Polo 79, you know, as an iconic watch
prize or winning the iconic watch prize.
It's a little bit more obvious. I mean, it's a super cool
(15:44):
looking watch, very iconic looking.
But you also talked about the men's complication.
Watch prize winner The Divitune.Yes.
So that one again, was one whereI had only, I believe seen one
like that. That's the thing about the GHG
like award site, I think there'smany photos on that, but when
(16:05):
you're kind of scrolling throughInstagram and seeing it, you're
typically seeing like the front dial of the watch.
So even with the letterer, I waslike, oh, that's a beautiful
watch, but I hadn't seen when, you know, it's like that moment
you see the thing. That's kind of the special part.
And with this one, it's just incredible on both sides and
it's actually fully, you can fully reverse the case so you
(16:27):
can wear it on both sides and it's finished so that yes.
Yeah, it's so that it's a super interesting way to do it with
the flipping case, but also justthe front, just the regular.
I I say regular, just the the front dial with this brilliant
(16:48):
blue finish and gold almost looks like a Milky Way Galaxy
going across it is it's ridiculously beautiful, yes.
But then you're like, oh, and you can flip it and there's a
whole nother watch face. No, but the cool thing is the
way they had it displayed was the opposite way.
Which? Made it much more impactful
because you're like, wait a SEC.Yeah.
(17:10):
So it really showed in a different way that it is like
truly reversible. And then there was there was one
watch that really stood out to me when I was looking at
watches. I called it a Little Mermaid
Dreamwatch show part. It's called a Laguna High
jewelry secret watch. There's shells.
(17:31):
There's shells everywhere. There's shells covered in
diamonds. There's a little secret watch
that's a clam with a shell. I mean, look, here's the thing.
When you see some of those pieces in real, you're just
like, like the the craftsmanshipand artistry of all of these
watches. And so I was pretty excited.
It made me regret, but we walkedpast the Van Cleef and Arpil's
(17:52):
booth multiple times and watchesand wonders.
It made me regret not just stopping and just looking and
seeing some of the watches in person.
Yeah, because I still never have.
Well, this was the show part, but the Van Cleef's won three
awards. Yes, but.
You're talking about that, that complexity of these like high
jewelry watches, like I've neverlooked at any of that.
Close. I think the difference for me
(18:14):
with some of the Van Cleaves is that they actually have created
complications around it. So the show part was really
just, you know, even even the the CEO I believe he said, like,
you know, this is a piece of jewelry.
The watch is not even the the most special part of it.
Whereas I think with the Van Cleefs, they actually are, you
(18:36):
know, the complication is like the flowers open and, you know,
like they've really created these interesting ways of
telling the time through art pieces, you know, like, which I
think is really fun. So I'll do an episode about that
actually, because I think it's so it's such an interesting way
of design. Yeah.
So OK, OK, we are backish. Back.
(18:59):
Ish. Yeah, we're back in a new
format. Well, at least for the short
term, we're going to do Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Yes, because
3. Times a week is better than 0 it
is. Better than 0 and then we can
get to 200 in a good amount of time and we have so much to talk
about. That's one of the I have two new
(19:22):
watch announcements. But we 2.
But we know that it's all like that.
It's busy and we want to keep a routine.
Yeah, but it felt like Monday, Wednesday, Friday was a routine
we can keep because we really miss podcasting.
Yes, and and talking to all of you.
Yes. And so we're back.
Yeah. So let us know what you think
about that. Yeah.
About us coming back or about Monday, Wednesday, Friday or I?
(19:45):
Guess all of the state above thewatch industry.
Podcasting in the industry have a great.
Day bye.
