In today's episode we talk about Vu's new watch, the Arken Alterum limited edition Year of the Dragon, and why Vu thinks it's probably the coolest watch under $1000.

Check out Arken here: https://arken.uk

Here's my first photo of the watch: https://www.instagram.com/p/DCbsx0jI3Dq/

NOTE: Although Vu had intended to pay full price for this watch and tried to purchase it, founder Ken sneakily gave it to him as a gift from a friend. He didn't ask for anything in return, and as usual has not paid us to make any media about it, nor has any say over the content we choose to make.

(00:08):
Welcome to this Watch LIVE. Hi, I'm Lydia Winters.
And I'm Boo Boo. It's new watch day and you watch
Alert Day, Podcast day, podcast edition.
I don't know. New watch alert podcast edition.
It's because normally it's an Instagram edition just that just

(00:32):
rolls right off the time it is. One of the most fun things to
talk about is getting a new watch.
Mm hmm. And we've been, we've just been
like hoarding a few. Yeah, we're actually a little
bit behind on announcing new watch alerts.
Yes. Well, we did kind of pause the
podcast for a little while. Oh yeah, we don't talk about.
We don't talk about Bruno. No.

(00:53):
OK. So a couple of years ago, we
were visiting Britt and James inBristol.
Britt Pierce. Like a subscribe?
See, I knew you'd wanna. And while we were there, Red Bar
Bristol, which is the only Red Bar event we've ever been to.
Red Bar Bristol was happening like right then.
And so we went, we got to experience Red Bar, a bunch of

(01:14):
people bringing a bunch of amazing watches.
You know, you had just watch owners, you had a few watch
brands and like we got to briefly meet Kenneth Lamb and
got to see his semi eponymous brand Arkin, their first watch,
the Arkin Instrumentum. And Ken was a little sweetie.

(01:37):
That's all I remember. Just a sweetie.
Sorry, Ken. That's why I.
Like always, hope to be called alittle sweetie.
A little. Sweetie.
Although I agree, Ken is a little sweetie.
And so Arken is the name of the brand, right?
ARKEN, that's his brand. Where Ken is from, where he

(01:58):
lives in the UK, people say our Ken, like OUR our Ken is like a
term of endearment. And so that's where the all this
is the little sweetie. I didn't know that.
I didn't really know that. I didn't know that.
So that's from people calling him R Ken because that's like
how you call someone that you care about in that area.

(02:21):
Evidence. So in support of Ken being a
little swingy, a little, there you go.
Yeah. So OK.
So. Arkin is Ken's brand, but you
know when you have a brand this size where it's a one person
show, like the brand is him. He is the brand.
He designs the watches, he does the branding.
I think he does the photography as well.

(02:43):
Like it's Ken. If if you interact with this
brand with these watches, you are interacting with Ken.
And so like when you look at small brands like this, you're
to me and not, not everyone feels this way, but I very much
am like I'm looking at the person behind the brand as much
as I'm looking at the product itself.

(03:05):
Right. Yeah, so if I really like a
watch, but I really don't like the person making it, it's
probably not going to work. For me, no, I don't think so.
I mean, I think it's actually easier when it's a big brand,
yes, because you can separate you kind of like, oh, but you
know that one person from the brand I didn't like whatever or

(03:27):
that company they did they. Can hide their people behind the
brand itself, right? And you could dislike a person,
let's say they're the CEO. Mm hmm.
And they insult a bunch of people like I, I don't have any
examples, but if someone did that, you could still be like,
but I still like that brand because that's just a person.

(03:47):
And eventually that person will have moved on, but the brand
will remain. With a small brand like this,
the person is the brand. Like their values are imbued
directly into that brand. And so you like them as a
package. And that's what we have here, an
entire package of, as you call little sweetie, plus amazing

(04:10):
watches. And like for Ken, if you look at
the website arkin.ukithinkarkin.co.uk, like
a big part, obviously we'll linkin the show notes.
A big part of his mission to make.
Oh yeah, I haven't done show notes tomorrow.
I had to say that because my sister Mindy is like Vu.

(04:31):
Every few weeks she's like Vu. You're such a slacker.
Where are the show notes? The website hasn't been updated
for like 5 months, but so a big part of Ken's mission is to make
like adventurous watches that are affordable, but they look
and feel more premium than theirprice.
So they need to be tough and adventurous and they need to

(04:55):
feel premium, but they also needto not cost premium.
And he started with the Instrumentum, which he sold for
$500. I believe it was a 300 piece
run. And those all sold and people
love them. They were on a bracelet, they
were titanium and people were like, wow, like this is an
amazing watch. And we got to see that one at

(05:17):
that red bar Bristol. And I really liked it.
It left an impression. But then last year Arkin
announced the Altarum, the second watch.
And then my ears really perked up, which is, which makes me
sound like a dog, a friendly dog.
My ears really perked up. And so, OK, I like GMT and

(05:41):
travel time watches. This is well known fact.
I do, and this is, I believe, a new take on the travel time
watch. Like, as far as I know, can
develop the module that sits on top of the Miota 9015 movement
that makes this watch work the way it does.

(06:02):
So most people know there's likea couple of types of GM
Typically there's a 2 main typesof GMT watches.
You have a travel GMT and a collar GMT and that like that's
just about how you set them and that kind of.
Stuff. Yeah, I remember the difference.
You do. Yeah, I will remember your face.

(06:23):
I'll let you tell me. Oh, OK.
OK. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But so unlike those watches, which have a 24 hour hand that
rotates one time around the dialin 24 hours, and they point to
the 24 hours on the bezel, this watch has two hour hands that
both rotate once every 12 hours. So they're 212 hour hands, one

(06:47):
for each time zone. And then there's two separate
AMPM indicators, one for each hand.
So you have these two indicatorsthat indicate AM or PM and two
hour hands. And that's your dual time.
Got it. OK, I, I will admit this is not
the easiest thing to describe ona podcast, but just go look it

(07:10):
up. It's very easy to understand.
The way you said it is a little bit different.
The way it operates is a little bit different, but you get used
to it immediately and you can read it and like, if you see the
little white dot, it's like, oh,it's that's AM.
And if it's black than it's PM super easy, very easy to
understand. Anyway, so I saw this watch and

(07:30):
I thought, OK, I really want oneof these.
It took the clear like design language from the instrumentum
and brought in this custom module complication and just
turned it into a watch that I felt was even more for me, much
more than the dive watch was. And like if you just think about

(07:52):
what this watch is, so you've got a titanium, it's like 73
grams, you know, with the strap,it's got a custom quick release
nylon strap. So that's custom molded it
because it's kind of looks like an integrated strap, but it's
nylon. It's got a texture dial with
these solid loom plots that remind me of the amazing like 3D

(08:15):
loom plots that are on the TudorBlack Bay Pro that everyone
loves so much. This has that it's obviously got
an interesting complication. It's 200 meters of water
resistance. It has a screw down crown and
then also a screw down little pusher because you push that
little button to change the dateand so you can just.

(08:37):
OK, that I can understand. It's like the quickest set date
there is. You just push the button and the
date goes oh. And OK, so I'm doing it right.
Now is holding holding the watch.
I didn't realize that the date was in the subdial yes.
So the subdial is a date. So cool and I really like
clicking it. Yes.
I don't know what date it is or what day it will become, but I

(08:59):
am. That thing is flying around.
You are proving that it is a very quick set date.
That's really. So he wanted to separate the
date change mechanism from the crown.
That's cool it. Works really well.
So OK, all of that. You get all of that for 600
British pounds. That's very impressive.
I think it's incredibly impressive.
So anyway, OK, so this year before I got a chance to

(09:22):
actually pick one of those up, Ken released a 60 piece limited
edition version of the Watch. It's a year of the Dragon
version. And if you don't know about the
Chinese Zodiac calendar, although we have talked about
the Chinese Zodiac in the Shenzhen.
Episode yes and. Many episodes, actually.
Probably around February. When is this a Lunar New Year?

(09:45):
Oh yeah, 'cause they were a bunch of year.
The dragon watches are out thereand so there's 12 animals
representing 12 years and that'sa cycle.
Like, I wish I was a dragon. I always wish I was a dragon.
I'm a snake, so my year is next year.
Snakes just aren't quite as coolas Dragons, but this limited.
The Dragons are like friends though.

(10:06):
Yeah, a snake is a dragon without legs.
You think that makes it sound cooler?
No, but I mean they're like. Maybe it could just be a dragon
as a snake with legs. No.
Yeah, see. See.
I'm not saying a snake is as cool, but I'm saying like I'm a
Bunny. What I.

(10:28):
That's true. Both.
I believe both Dragons and snakes would just chomp you as a
Bunny. Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, I'm not my Monty Python Bunny though.
Oh, OK, OK, that is scary. So it's a 60 piece limited
edition, which, Oh no, this goeseven more into your your view on

(10:49):
Ken. OK, because his mom turned 60
this year. He's.
So it's not only is this year her Zodiac year, right?
So she's Year of the Dragon, butalso it's not just that there's
the 12 animals that represent the Zodiac, there's also the
five elements. So you pair an an animal with an

(11:11):
element. Yeah, I'm a fire rabbit.
Fire. Rabbit, that make does make you
sound more cool. And it does make me sound like
the killer rabbit. So in 60 years means one full
cycle through the entire 12 animals, 5 elements.
It's a sexagenary cycle. She was born a wood dragon and

(11:32):
this year is the first year of the wood dragon since she was
born. So that's super cool.
All that ties together into the story of why this watch, why
now, why 60 pieces? It's like.
Exhibit #2 of Ken being a littlesweetie.
Wait, no, sorry, this is number three.
Yeah, I think. Madam in.
Person no Madam in person named Brand Arkin and then his mom.

(11:57):
Also, he recently mentioned to me that he owes you a giant
glass of orange juice because you you got him a glass of
orange juice at the Red Bar Bristol and he he drank that
whole glass. #4 a little. Remembering his debts.
So the year, this one is the Year of Dragon version.
It's different in two main ways.So it's the same watch, same

(12:19):
movement, same function, but it has this great burgundy maroon
color for the strap and an even darker burgundy maroon for the
dial. I would call it like burned
burgundy. Burned Burgundy.
Because it's like it's almost black.
It is, but you see the burgundy,so it's like on the light.

(12:40):
Yeah, burgundy. Burnt Burgundy.
Yeah, that's so beautiful. But the dial is textured to look
like dragon scales. I could not love this thing more
it. Looks really cool on you.
It I really so it even looks cool on you.
You would think it's a 40mm case, but the lug to lug is very

(13:00):
short. It fits, I would say your wrist
very, very well. It's just really a nice watch.
So the I, I reached out to Ken, he had, I believe done this for
British Watchmaking Day, but then I missed that and I reached
out afterwards. You know, we've become friends

(13:21):
and now we are once a month podcast Co hosts on the Form and
function podcast, which our nextepisode is coming out tomorrow.
So that's Saturday because they released their episodes on
Saturday or we we release our form and function.
Can you believe that Vu is so starved for podcasting?

(13:45):
Like he had to go find another podcast to be on?
I mean, OK, Like we it's like wecut.
Do you? Want to do every day?
Anymore and VU was like, well I need to get my podcast in.
Yeah, so I'm going to be joininga few more podcasts.
So I I guess to make up for all the lost the lost time.

(14:06):
But anyway, I, I was like, look,if you have any more, if there's
any possibility for me to get one, I want to buy one of those
watches. Like I, I want it so bad.
It looks amazing. And so he's like, I think I can
make that happen months. Later, you were so excited.
I was. I was very happy about this.

(14:26):
Months later and a package just showed up at the door and it's
the watch and Ken said he wantedme to have it as a gift from a
friend. No expectations, no ass, no
strings. Truly, he just wanted me to have
one and. Exhibit #5 He's a little
sweetie. OK, so I'm a snake.

(14:50):
Wait, when I say it that way, I'm a snake.
So, you know, technically this being a here of the dragon
watch, I shouldn't love it as much as I do, but I think it's a
very snake thing to do to wear adragon watch.
Also, once again, scales and yeah, so yeah, and.
Snakes can have scales, yeah. They don't, kind of.
Similar. That's Dragon.

(15:11):
Scales, snakeskin and scales. Don't exist.
Look, what's a what's a Bunny 1 going to be a cotton cottontail.
That'll be cool. OK so I so I've had this watch
now over a week. I love it so much.
Even though I got three days after that watch arrived, my

(15:34):
Otsuka low tech number 7.5 arrived.
I've been waiting for that one forever and I've still been
wearing the Arkin everyday because I just I love it so much
and I want to really give it itstime so the tsuka low tech is
put aside. Mm hmm it will get its time
yeah, but not just yet, because this watch is really making me
happy everyday. Strapping it on, I took it to

(15:58):
our watch meet up with our Stockholm watch friends and
everyone loved it. And Tom, he was like, you could
have told me this was €3000 and I'd be like, yeah, that makes
sense. Like you're, you just get so
much watch for the price. It looks, it feels, everything
about it feels super premium. I'm not just saying that because

(16:19):
it was a gift. I just, I, I would have happily
paid him for it and that was my plan.
But then I did end up getting itfor free.
So I guess that's the transparency statement is that
yes, this watch was given to me even though I tried to buy it,
but Arkin and Ken haven't paid us to talk about it.

(16:39):
Ken doesn't know we're making this episode.
He hasn't asked us to say anything or do anything in
exchange for the watch or anything else.
And the last disclaimer is he says he doesn't.
He would not want to be cool. Such a little swingy, actually,
I think I think, okay, my prediction is that Ken, because
he is a little sweetie, we'll think it's really nice that I

(17:03):
noticed that he's a little sweetie.
But so since. I hope he doesn't hate it
anyway. Yeah, I guess we're going to
find out. So because like I said, when you
have a small brand like this, the brand is like, of course,
the product, the product is so important because it doesn't
matter how nice someone is, if the product is amazing, then you
know, what are you doing, right? The product's amazing.

(17:25):
We've talked about it. It's it's fantastic.
I've shown it to other people. They agree.
This is not just in my head, like it's an awesome watch.
But now you have this guy, the brand is him.
He is the brand, and his brand is making these quite tough but
beautiful adventure watches, andnow you're trying to rebrand him

(17:47):
as a little sweetie. He's a tough and adventurous
little sweetie. I guess.
I guess maybe he will accept that.
With that, I hope you have a happy and sweet Friday
everybody.
