(00:00):
Not only is he wearing his captain'shat, his blazer with the yachtley Crew
logo. Love that, his whiteshirt, his white pants. He has
now got the headphones tipped behind thehat so as to not mess up the
entire look that you were rocking.Well, you know, I always like
to make an entrance. What canI say? You know this? The
(00:21):
suit goes with me pretty much everywhereand as well as should Why would you
not? Have you seen the newThis is so random? But have you
seen the Olympic opening and closing ceremoniesdone by Ralph Lauren? Uh? No?
Blue blaze on the road. SoI haven't blue blazer. It looks
so good. I want one.I want to buy one. Apparently he
came to a ya the Cruse show. I had no idea exactly. Let's
(00:42):
talk about yacht rock for a second. When did this become a genre?
That is a great question. Idon't know if we can pinpoint it.
But we got started in twenty seventeenand no one knew what the heck it
was. I mean we would tellpeople yacht rock and they be like,
what's that? So we've we've gottenin the habit of describing it. And
I always tell people, if you'venever heard the term yacht rock, you
already know what it is. Youjust didn't know what's called that, because
(01:03):
it's all the seventies and eighties softrocks. And by the way, yes,
Christopher Across. We'll be playing someChristopher Cross last tomorrow night, Holland
O. It's Toto, Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, Michael McDonald,
you name it. This is whatmakes up all of the yacht rock genre.
These songs. There are the songs. I mean, I'm a child
of the seventies and eighties, andI always think these are the songs that
were playing in their dentist office.Yep, they were playing, and your
(01:26):
elevators, they were playing at yourgrocery stores. They were playing because they
were kind of the absolutely unoffensive soundtrackof our life. Right, So,
how in the world did you gettogether with a bunch of other guys and
say, you know what, weshould play the soft rock favorite so of
the nineteen eighties or seventies and eighties. And you found other guys that were
like, you know what, greatidea? How that happened? So our
(01:49):
bass player Baba Booie, of courseand our drummer, Sailor Hawkins. They've
been buddies and they've been in bandsfor thirty years or maybe more. And
they weren't doing anything really at thetime, and Baba said to say,
you know this music. He waslistening to serious sexem and he, I
don't know, can I say that? Yeah, he was listening to a
lot of this music. He's like, no one's doing anything with this.
Why we why don't we bring somethingtogether. I found out about the band
(02:13):
through a friend that I used tokaraoke with. I used to go to
karaoke and she was like, youwould be perfect for this band. Her
brother is our guitar player. Soit's like one degree of separation. Yeah.
So it just it kind of cametogether really organically, and we all
have a love for this music.I grew up listening to this music.
I mean, my dad was ahuge Doobie Brothers fan, and Michael McDonald
and yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly, and so but it just kind
(02:36):
of it does have a bit ofmagic to it because we're all friends.
We're family now. We've been doingthis for seven years and we love each
other, we love the music. And at what point were you like,
you know what, kids, Ithink we can make this a career.
We're still kind of at that point. You don't do people have second jobs,
not anymore. This past year hasgotten to the point where this is
(02:57):
all we can do because it's justso busy. I mean we're literally on
the road now, in the middleof our twenty twenty four full steam Ahead
tour on a tour bus for twomonths straight. And I mean, I
don't want to make you sound likeyou're ancient, but you're not twenty years
old here, no, no,So what is that experience as adults because
you're you're you appear to be agrown man. Yeah, I mean I
understand, like when young guys aremy wife, Yes, like young guys
(03:20):
are like, yeah, let's geta van and just touring country in the
van. There's a certain amount ofromance to that. But you're over forty.
You need a comfortable bed, I'massuming, Well, yes we do.
And you know, it's it's oneof those things that we've been building
this and we we care deeply aboutwhat we do, and we're all kind
of blue collar musicians, you know, this is something that we wanted to
do our whole lives. And formany of us, we've had other bands
(03:42):
and other projects that we've been involvedin. This has been the thing that
has taken off and it's and it'sbeen more surprising to us than I think
anyone, because you know, peoplelook at us like yacht rock is a
thing, like is this really whatyou do? You hit a niche that
apparently is a deep niche that wascompletely untapped because all of us want to
think back to those days. Drivein my house, drive into the pool
(04:03):
in the in the summer. Absolutely, that's what made me love the song
Copacabana. I love Barry Madelowe.I'm not. I'm out of a closet.
He's a fan, but it's likeit does take you back. It
takes you back to simpler times. It takes you back to when you were
a kid. How do you choosethe songs that you guys play, Well,
a lot of them are just theyalready exist within this genre. You
(04:23):
know, if you if you spendany time on the internet looking up yacht
rock, there's no shortage of opinions. But we have really shaped our setlist
over the last seven years based onaudience feedback. Oh wow, and you
know we want to put on thebest show ours is, by the way,
for people who've never heard of YachtleyCrew before, We're not just in
(04:44):
your average band that stands there onstage. You know. We call ourselves
Yatley Crew for a reason because that'sthe kind of energy we put in.
You bring a heavy metal energy toa soft We bring rock and roll energy.
Okay, soft rock, but theshow and the performances are super energetic
and husiastic. We're not just standingthere going through the motions. Well.
I saw Christopher Cross fairly recently ona tour with Todd run Wren, and
(05:08):
he don't well, he sounded great, he played great, but he doesn't
do much on stage, and hewould as the other bands were playing,
he would just kind of walk offvery very slowly, like kind of just
fade that. He would come backthen he was just fade in. So
there won't be any of that tonight. We are the opposite. Okay,
yeah, the exact opposite of that. It's so much energy and so much
(05:30):
fun. We want our audience tohave the most fun that they've ever had
at our show. I mean,we want people to walk away going this
is the best concert I've been toin memory. That's really what we go
for every time we perform. Igot a bunch of people hitting our common
spirit health text line. Okay withquestions. One this just says so excited
we'll be at the Oriental tomorrow. So there you go, Mandy, ask
him how long the opening act is? Do you have an opening act?
(05:54):
This is where you should put insome of those one hit wonders from the
seventies. I know he got weactually show and Ambrosia opened for us.
They open for us. Yeah,we've played it, but we didn't find
out until like the week before andwe were like, we got a message
from our agent. He's like,do you guys, You guys are cool
if Ambrosia opens for you, andwe're like, yeah, that's amazing.
(06:15):
They sound incredible. I mean, they still sound absolutely perfect. I'm going
to be real. I don't knowmuch about what happens with the opener because
we don't handle that. That's usuallydecided by the venue. Okay, so
I don't know, but usually theopeners are incredible, and usually there are
a lot of local musicians, socome on out support local music as well,
all right, do that? Canyou ask Billy if the set list
(06:38):
will be the same as the lasttime they were in Denver. No,
we change it every time we comeback to a market. Every time we
come back to a place, it'sdifferent. We obviously we have about twenty
songs that we have to play.If we don't play Africa, we'll get
hate mail. People will literally teariststo shred. You know what social media
is like. Now, if wedon't play You Make My Dreams Come True
or Baker Street, people are goingto lose their minds. So there's the
(07:00):
solid twenty songs that are in everyshow, right, But then we mix
it up and we always try andbring in new stuff. We have a
couple of new songs that you've definitelynever heard us play before. So it's
it's going to have some new freshenergy for sure. All right. The
band is called Yachtlee Crue, Andif you go to I'll know. I
don't know if I just put alink to the Orientals page, but I
will go back and link to theYachtly Crew page because this person said,
(07:24):
where can I find out where theyplay? Because we have listeners all over
really far away from here. Sohey, Mandy found out about these guys
the last time you had them onthe show. Can't wait to see them
in July at Indian Ranch. That'sBob from Massachusetts. Love, It's going
to be right there. There yougo. And another person said they're an
amazing performing group, so thank you. You guys are going to have a
(07:44):
great show Philly Ocean. You cansee him and the rest of the guys.
Tomor wait, give me the namesof all the people in the band
real quick. Okay, so youheard me say, Baba Booie, Saylor
Hawkins on drums, Tommy boo onguitar, Polly Shores on saxophone, Stony
Shores on keys, and matthewmac donaldon keys. Of course, does he
also sing Little Deity Brothers? Everyonesings? Okay, everyone sings Yeah. Perfect
