Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome back to the Ticket seven sixty Golf Show. Jacob
muneos in for Andy Everett. Andy Everett, the longtime voice
of UTSA Athletics. We'll be calling all the action of
the day as the Roadrunners try to get back to
five hundred on the season. They take on Charlotte at
eleven this morning. Pregame at nine right here on Tickets
seven sixty. Very happy to welcome back from beautiful Canyon
Springs Golf Courts and Total Performance Golf Mark J. Caldwell, Mark,
(00:25):
Good morning, welcome back. How are you hey?
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Good morning, David. How are you doing they.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
I'm doing great. Before we get to your tip segment
of the week, I do have to call out Mark J. Caldwell, folks,
because about a month ago I was going to be
playing in the scramble that Canyon Springs, which is where
Mark is, and he and I made arrangements to see
him before I teed off, and I asked him to
help me out with one thing. One of the things
that I have said on this show is through the years,
because of my aging, i've lost about twenty twenty five
(00:52):
yards in distance. Well Mark immediately identified something when he
took me out to the practice area. I had always
been of the mindset, Mark that I was supposed to
stand at address of the golf ball with the feet
as wide as your shoulders. You immediately had me swing
a couple of times. You saw what I was doing wrong.
The main thing is is that you had me widen
(01:12):
my stands at the point of address and loan behold.
Number eleven is a whole that we sought her on
that day at Canaan Springs. It's about a three hundred
and thirty yard part four. They took my drive. You
know why, Mark, because we were only sixty yards away,
which means I hit the ball to it or in
seventy yards of my first te shot.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
All right, golf clap, David, golf clap.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
Love it.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Yeah, I mean, you know the golf swing is I mean,
it can be overwhelmingly complicated. But you know, one of
the things that I like to talk about when it
comes to the stance and the foundation is that you know,
in biomechanics and the golf swing, we start from the
ground and work our way up. So you know, I
like to joke around and say, hey, would you climb
(01:54):
a vertical wrong ladder with no support, and nobody will
because you get to a point that your center of
gravity changes and you're going to fall. But we will
climb an a frame ladder all day long. So when
we can get our hips over our knees and over
our feet and we get athletic and go. Now we've
now our power our power source of the golf swing
(02:15):
is set and ready and kind of as we I'll
parlay into this. One of the things I was wanting
to point out today was and I wanted to ask
you about this, and I and a great great segue
into this. You know, the next step that I would
say is that, you know, once you get comfortable in
your new setup, if you want to feel a little
bit more powered, drop your right foot slightly back. That's
(02:38):
going to allow your hips to turn a little deeper,
and that's going to allow you to turn through it.
And I'd also open that left foot slightly. Now you've
got a little bit more of a power source and
your rotation is staying a little bit more intact. With
this the sequencing of the swing.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
I will try that, I will try to take that
into account. I'm going to be playing in another tournament
this Tuesday, so hopefully I'll remember that as well. Well. Now,
one of the things that you did point out, Mark
when we were out there, you know, a few weeks ago,
is that having the stands as narrow as I was,
it was taking away a lot of distance. But I
was also swaying quite a bit. Now I still sway,
but as I went through the round that day, I
(03:14):
think I might have swayed a little bit less by
having my stance a little bit wider.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Well, I mean, David, I mean when you think about Tiger.
Back in Tiger's dominant days in the in the mid
mid to late nineties, Tiger had an incredible amount of
sway and then all of a sudden it just went
taboo when he started working with Hank Haney and things
started getting vertical. Well, vertical in the golf swing doesn't
work very well until at the moment of truth, which
(03:41):
is impact. So your lateral sway was great as long
as it stayed moving in a loading position towards the target.
Now when the sway starts moving in opposite directions of
the golf swing, well, now we've got a little bit
of a We've got a little bit of a heat
hiccup in our.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
Sequencing, Mark Jay Cold was our guest some Total Performance Golf. Mark.

go out there for some instruction from you, what's the

Speaker 1 (04:19):
What is the best score you've ever shot in your life,
no matter what course it's been on.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
So so, back when I was the GM at River
Hill Country Club, we would play one hundred holes of
golf to raise money for scholarships for juniors high school players.
And we'd made scholarships for Bayern Nelson, Ross Collins and
a few other players. And I had the opportunity one
(04:44):
of the few last times we played it while mister
Nelson was still alive. He came out and watched this play.
So in that hundred holes of golf, I had rounds
I've made thirty six birdies and one hundred holes, I
shoot sixty three in one of the rounds. In the
last nine holes, Matt Travino and I traded punches and
(05:06):
I think we had a total of maybe fourteen birdies
in the last nine holes, all in front of mister Nelson.
So that was that was a highlight of my life.
And I know it wasn't in a tournament format, but
you playing in front of Lord Byron Nelson, it was
quite exciting.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
There have been people that I've had on this show
that have known Arnold Palmer greatly through his life and
that he was one of the most accommodating people, of
one of the most polite gentlemen you've ever met. Would
you say the same thing about Nelson himself?
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Byron Nelson, Yes, I mean Byron was you know, Byron
was the epitome of the true gentleman, always spoken. Every
time he came down the Curville, he made it a
point to come find me and my staff and hang
out with us and talk golf, and it was you know,
it was just a then with my family. I mean,
(06:02):
it's kind of fascinating. One of my son's same birthday
as mister Nelson. So mister Nelson gave me one of
his gold pocket watches that he signed to give to William.
You know, he didn't have to go out of his
way to do stuff like that. But you know, he
made fun of me a little bit because you know,
before I came down to River Hill, I was working
(06:23):
atventry in Dallas and we were very close to the
Buyer Nelson factory where all this apparel was made by
Hagar Clothing. So I had Buyer Nelson on my shirt,
on my sleeve, on the back of the top yoke,
I had Buyer Nelson on the pants. I had Byron
Nelson down down by the ankle. And He's like, my
god son, you're a walking billboard for me, and so
(06:46):
he kind would joke with me about that. But his
second time that I ever met him, he had gone
home and built me a nesting table for the golf
shop and he hand burned his name handmade by Bayern
Nelson in the top. Love it, uh, And David, I'll
send you a picture of that this afternoon. It's this
true gentleman of a game, true gentlemen of inspired me
(07:10):
to be a better man. And I think that's one
of the true things about Lord Byron Nelson.
