Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome back to the Golf Show on sports Radio AM
seven sixty the Ticket. This is David Wunyo seen for
Andy Everett. Andy, the longtime voice of UTSA Athletics, is
up in Denton, Texas today as a runner as we'll
take on North Texas. Tip off at five and pregame
at four thirty right here on sports Radio AM seven
sixty the Ticket. Welcoming back for our tip segment of
the week from Kenyon Springs Golf and Total Golf Performance.
(00:25):
It is Mark J. Called Well. Mark, good morning and
what tip do you have for us to start out
this final segment of the show.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Hey, good morning, David. I hope you're doing well. So
you know, I've been thinking about this one a lot.
You know, the human body moves in three directions of motion,
up and down, right and left and forward and back. Now,
in the golf swing, forward and back is not good
because when we have heel toe movement in the golf swing,
(00:51):
that typically means we're over the top or we're way
too shallow coming in from the inside and kind of
throwing the hands back at it. So one of the
things that I would really key into is that when
you're out on the when you're out playing or practicing,
make sure that you feel really grounded and through impact
you're trying to keep your hands low in the body turning.
If you do that, you're going to have great turf interaction,
(01:13):
You'll have compression of the golf ball, and your ball
striking will be definitely more solid.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
One of the things I want to bring up with you,
we we have you on the phone right now, Mark,
in terms of rules and things of that nature, is
something that happened with Scottie Scheffler yesterday over at Pebble
Beach when he pulled his drive his T shirt on
eighteen down along the rocks and so forth, and he
was allowed to move some rocks. But that rule somewhat
has changed from what I understand that. I think something
went into effect. I think in twenty nineteen, Yes.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
That is correct. In twenty nineteen you are now allowed
to move loose impediments in penalty areas, so anytimes you
got you know, I think in that situation yesterday there
was some seaweed, there were some loose impediments around the
ball that he was able to move. And you know,
especially for Scottie, I'd rather be lucky than good. He
(02:05):
got a really great break with where the ball was
sitting and he could actually get a club underneath it.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Now, in terms of what do you offer out there
at Canyon Springs, of course you have total golf performance,
total performance golf. Excuse me, so you've been giving lessons
for quite some time, and I know that you can
bring back certain things, especially in the older folks like
me who probably I haven't had my swing speed measured
in so many years and so forth. But it obviously
a slowed down which of course is going to take
(02:32):
away some distance. But you have tips for anybody that
might be getting up in age, if they feel that
they have maybe slowed down their swing. What is it
best that you can offer on the air without somebody
going out there to see you personally, to help them
increase clubhet swing and gain back some of that distance.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Well, you know, David has said, as the equipment that
we're playing today is continualing, getting better and better and better,
and they're pushing the envelope on MLI so they can
increase clubhead speed, which increases ball speed. To me, just
for myself, I'm fifty three years old. Was on my
(03:10):
launch monitor a few weeks ago, and I was kind
of shocked at how slow I was. I haven't really
lost much distance, but I sure have lost some clubhead speed.
So me personally, I started working out with bands just
you can jump on Amazon or go to any boarding
good store and get a good set of bands and
(03:31):
just working on the flexibility and the mobility of shoulders, hips, legs.
It really fascinated me how soon and how fast I
could get back to my clubhead speed that I was
used to.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
So that's all it takes right now. As far as
people want to go out there and maybe get some
bands today, possibly that'll it'll help them by just doing
some exercizing with that.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
It's I mean, David, it's the simple. I mean, you're
already up moving around. You might as well throw some
bands on and walk around with bands around your thighs
so you can work on flexibility. Talking about staying grounded
and utilizing the ground to push off of. I mean,
that's that's where we get our speed. You know. One
of the one of the things that we talk about
(04:15):
in our academy is that we want to be grand
in the golf swing. So what we mean in that
acronym is that we want to utilize the ground up.
We want to be rhythmic, we want to be asynchronous
in the swing. What we do on the right side,
we do on the left side. We want to be
natural and we want to be dynamic. If we can
accomplish those simple things utilizing our feet which we stand
(04:37):
on all day long, we're going to be able to
have more power. We're going to be able to utilize
the ground up, and we're going to absolutely get our
speed back.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
Mark Jay Caldwell as our guests from Canyon Springs and Mark,
let's go back to earlier in the month of January
and sabulated, congratulations again. But you received another another accolade
that came down right after the new year began.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Yes, the PGA magazine. You know, you know, the PGA
is such a great organization. I was blessed to receive
for a third year in a row, an Elite master,
a master elite status with the PGA magazine and growing
the game of golf. And you know, that's that's why,
(05:22):
you know, say, that's why I offer free assessments because
I want I want to be able to help grow
the game and give you a carrot or a thought
that you could take on the golf course that will
improve your game. And it's I'm I'm honored and I'm
blessed and I can't wait for twenty twenty five. I
(05:44):
think it's going to be a great year.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
Well congratulations on that. Of course. He is a US
Kids Golf Academy at Canyon Springs Golf Club, instructor, certified
PGA Pro. He's one of the top fifty US Kids
Golf coaches around and Mark, we've only got maybe about
a minute left, But what's on the table for this
year in terms of the kids. You and I have
been involved with a couple of events in past years
(06:07):
where he asked me to be an honorary starter. But
in sixty seconds or less, what have you got to
look forward to in the next few months.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
So a lot of exciting things. We've got our Spring
US Kids Tours about the kickoff. On top of that,
we're going to do a test run for the first
time in the US Kids history that we're going to
actually run two different state championships. That's the event that
you helped us on. So we're going to be playing
at Lady Bird Johnson Memorial Day weekend, for the spring
(06:37):
Texas State Imitational, and then we're going to be playing
at Hygatt Hill Country in the fall in September. I
think it's such a Weber sixth and seventh for our
fall Texas State Imotational.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
Mark Jay Caldwell, as always, it's great having you on.
His number is two ten eight six three four sixty
five three. That's two ten eight sixty three golf. If
you want to calm up, get yourself a lesson, I'm
sure he'll take very good care of you. Mark, best
of luck this. We'll have you back at gun soon.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
Thanks David, good morning.
