Speaker 1 (00:02):
It's the golf show on the tickets visiting with Andrew
Peterson from the almost of the Golf Trail. I've never
been to Ireland. I'm thinking it's probably going to have
to be on the list here pretty soon. You and
I both work out with Craig Brown, who's been to
Ireland and he thinks it's better than Scotland. And so
what are your thoughts on watching Royal Port Rush for
(00:24):
the last couple of days.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
I'm going to I'm going to hide away in your
golf travel let's go. Yes, We've been talking about it
a lot at home and I think it's definitely a
destination we want to get to as well.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
Jason Day was talking about the weather on Thursday and
he said, I don't know if I'd want to be
a weather man here or not, because you'd never be right.
You predict something in twenty minutes later it's something else.
And on Thursday and Friday they are especially yesterday they
had light rain, sunshine, a south wind, then they had
a heavier rain in a north wind, then they had
(00:59):
sunshine in the south wind, and it all went back
and forth all throughout the day.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
I think you get four seasons in a day. I
think that's pretty cool. I have a co worker that
just got back and they were in Dublin and then
over on the coast, and he said that the people
the first couple of days that they were there were
just dying because it was eighty degrees in Brighton, Sonny,
and no one can handle it.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Yeah. I guess about eighty degrees is when I decided
to break out the shorts. That's about the limit, right,
take the top player of exactly all right. I was
listening to a Dave Marsh segment. Dave mar Junior is
obviously the son of the legendary golfer that was on
TV for so much in the seventies and eighties with
(01:41):
Jim McKay, back when ABC and Wide World of Sports
did most of the majors, and he was having a
It was an interview he did with Marcomera, and Marcomera
won the nineteen ninety eight championship, the Open Championship in
a playoff. Tiger Woods missed the playoff by a shot.
So the story that Mark o'meira tells is that he
(02:04):
was really kind of glad that Tiger didn't get in
the playoff because he probably wasn't going to win his major,
and by winning that, he won his second major because he'd.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
Already gotten the Masters in the same year.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
So Mark and Tiger were flying back to Orlando on
Tiger's private plane and having a conversation, and Mark wanted
to show him the trophy, and Tiger's like, I don't
want to see it. It's in the box, it's in
the little suitcase, it's sitting there in the other seat.
And finally, two or three hours into the flight they
agreed to take out the claret jug and have him
(02:36):
look at it. So Tiger's holding the claret jug and
the story that Mark o'meira says is, Okay, I got
to tell you three things.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
First of all, I love you.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
Second of all, I imagine your name is going to be
on that trophy multiple times going forward. What should ended
up being on three times. And also at the time,
Tiger was playing with Mark arko Mira's backup ping answer
to putter. That's what he played the entire ninety eight
season with up until the Open Championship. And he said
(03:08):
a third thing is, do you know why that putter
is my backup putter? Tiger's like, no, why he goes
because it always ends up one shot short and so
and Tiger's just livid right now after that because it
was a needle and he got the needle. So they
get off the plane there on the tarmac. Tiger unzips
the bag, pulls the putter out of the back.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
You can have this back, I'm changing.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
Went to Scottie Cameron the next week and obviously won
fourteen more majors or fifteen whatever it is with with
with that new putter, with his Scottie Cameron.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
I've got to know Dave mar a little bit through
our mutual connection with the Texas Golf Hall of Fame.
He's a wonderful storyteller, so I can imagine it was
a great story, fun to listen to.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Yeah, always end up one shot short, all right. So
there was also an article. Canim remember the guy's name.
I had it yesterday, But he works for Sports Illustrated
and he was critical of the fact that NBC, Peacock
and USA are showing golf all day long on Thursday
and Friday. And his headline in the story was is
(04:08):
twelve hours of golf too much? And I'm like, no,
how about fourteen or sixteen can you show more? And
my first thought was, if you don't want to watch
twelve hours of golf, change the channel or turn it off.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
You have a choice.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
You have a bazillion other channels that Yeah, it's it's
not like you're being forced to do it. But yes,
I do think we like it, and I get frustrated,
like with the Masters sometimes because they don't show as
much golf as I'd like to see.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Well, you remember, it wasn't all that many years ago
where they only showed.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
The back nine.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Now the last four holes, you know, the last two
hours or so. Yeah, I'm with you there.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Consume as much as you want to consume.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
When it comes to major championships, especially on the weekends,
my goal is to always tune in by the time
that the leader's t off, and I'll watched the last
four hours or four and a half hours, or whoever
long that is. But yeah, I kind of pay attention
a little bit to what happens with the earlier two
times because it kind of lets you know what's happening
with the course and if anyone's making a big run.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
But yeah, my gosh, well.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
I've been fortunate to play Saint Andrews six times, Carnoostie
five times, in Turnberry once and those are three of
the ten courses on the Open Road. I have not
played Troon, and I've also played Meerfield twice and so
I've never played Troon, and I've never played the four
golf courses.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
In England or the one in Northern Ireland.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
But when i get a chance to watch a golf
course that I've played on, especially a Mierfield or a
Saint Andrews, I'm watching every hole and I'm like, I
know that hole, I know what to do there. Oh,
you shouldn't do that that Kenny would not be would
not approve of that particular swing. So that's where the
enjoyment comes from me seeing those earlier groups play, whether
it's at five point thirty in the morning or the
(05:50):
last guy putting out on the last hole.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
Yeah, I agree.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
I've always enjoyed watching golf courses you've played on TV
because that you see somebody that maybe plays it from
a little bit different perspect then the way I played it.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
So it's fun. All right. Scottie Scheffler's in the league.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
We'll talk about him next and what he had to
say this week as well about how much he enjoys winning,
which was kind of surprising but it was a great answer.
We'll discuss all that coming up on the Tickets
