Speaker 1 (00:03):
It's the Golf Show on the ticket if you did
not know. The Texas Golf Hall of Fame has a
virtual museum that you can access at Texas Golf hlf
dot org. And there's a statewide campaign going on on radio,
and there's a lot of events that you can participate
in as well and be a member of all of
that and support the Texas Golf Hall of Fame at

(00:26):
down at Brackenridge Park is where a lot of the
history is housed. The operations are run out of Frisco,
and Ali Jarrett joins us. She's the executive director of
the Texas Golf Hall of Fame. Good morning, Ali. I
know you guys are excited about all the things you've
got going with the Texas Golf Hall of Fame these days.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
We are. Good morning, and thank you so much for
having me on your show today. We appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
Tell us about the radio campaign that you're putting out
there to educate people as to where to goes so
that they can be a part of this seeing virtuaw
Hall of Fame.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
Yeah, well, you know, one of the things is just
trying to have more awareness. I mean, we have so
much history and just incredible men and women in our
Hall of Fame and the stories that we are capturing
through the work that we're doing in the digital Museum.
We want more people to know about it and to
know about the Texas Golf Hall of Fame. And this

(01:23):
PSA campaign we have fifteen seconds to thirty seconds to
a minute, and they're done by our current chairman, Mike Booker,
who's actually in the Hall of Fame in the amateur category,
and you know, just describing who we are and a
little bit more about how you get to us. And
we certainly appreciate your help and running those PSAs for

(01:46):
us because we couldn't have better awareness if radio stations
like you weren't helping us out.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
Texas has got a long golf history and many are
in the world. Many Texas golfers or golfers from the
state are in the World Hall of Fame that just recently,
I think moved to Pinehurst and you've got so much
history here and I think to be able to illustrate
that for future golfers and young golfers so they know

(02:13):
the history is pretty cool. To have the Ben Hogan's
and the Jimmy Demerits and you go right on down
the list of some of the greatest golfers of all
time that are from Texas.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Oh absolutely. And you know you mentioned of the World
Golf Hall of Fame recently moving from Florida to back
to Pinehurst last year, and Texas has we make up
fifteen percent of the World Golf Hall of Fame. We
have twenty five of our members who are in the
World Golf Hall of Fame. And that's just pretty fascinating

(02:47):
that many of our members have made it into that
Hall of Fame. And so it's just a testament to
the game in Texas and from incredible players to contributors.
You know, you're not necessarily a player to be in
the World Golf Hall of Fame. And it's it's really neat,

(03:07):
and you know, talk about Texas in general, and you're
in San Antonio. Our Golf Wall Hall of Fame is
in San Antonio, which we're really proud of at Brackenridge
Park and the we recently filmed it did the Legacy
Story of Betty Jamison and Betty was at San Antonio

(03:29):
Country Club is where she played out of for many
many years and had incredible, you know, some incredible matches
there even as we were going back through some of
the archives, and she was one of the original founders
of the LPGA, and so, you know, things that this
history has got to be captured and preserved, and these
stories that we're telling, you know, are just quite amazing.

(03:53):
With these men and women in the Hall of Fame,
and we're really proud of all of our members, particularly
that come from San Antonio. And and I like Todd
Mennasee and and Bill Rogers and so and I imagine
with with some of the other great players that are
coming down the pike, we're going to have some future
famers as well.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Soon you're putting Scotty Scheffler in.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Well, you know, our minimum criteria is you got to
be forty years of age, and it's been a hard rule.
You know, our Hall of Fame is not easy to
get into. And there there are many people probably from
Texas that would be in any other state hall of
Fame that maybe aren't in ours. And but and it's
because of it is so darn competitive. But yeah, it's

(04:35):
like the likes of Scottie Scheffler and Jordan's speech, they're
not quite old enough. So that so we've got a
little little bit more time to watch them play. And
once they hit forty, they have they do have eligibility
hit forty. So on the plane side, just so you know, uh,
there's a there's a point system on the plane professional categories.

(04:56):
We have six different categories of membership. I have five
points on that category. So you know, a PGA Tour
win or LPGA Tour win is one point, and if
you want to major it's two points. So you've got
to really win to get in paying professional side.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
You know, we all love golf. I've been a part
of it since I was six or seven years old.
I started playing when I was eight or nine. I
got I recently made my fifth trip to Scotland because
I love the history of it and walking the fairways
of the places that I grew up watching with Jim
McKay and Dave More on ABC's Wide World of Sports.

(05:36):
Back in the seventies, I kid Bill Rodgers all the time.
When he won the Open at Royal Saint George's, I
had a black and white TV that was twelve inches
in the starter shack at a golf course in Oklahoma
watching him win that tournament. And so I'm very well,
I really love the history of the game. What was
it for you? And what was your golf background? And

(05:59):
I think everybody story is cool and unique. And now
you're running one of the premier Hall of Fames in
the world with a lot of really good golfers in it.
How'd you get involved? What were your what's your golf
background and story?

Speaker 2 (06:12):
Well, we certainly didn't need to touch on me in
that way, but you're kind I happened into golf because
I hurt my knee playing basketball, and that's that's really
how it all started. And so I was late coming
to the game as far as I never played junior golf,
but I did work really hard and I ended up

(06:34):
playing college golf, got a scholarship in my last three
years and played at the University of South Carolina and
really started volunteering in the game in South Carolina with
junior golf and ended up on a USJA committee. And
then ultimately what brought it me to Texas is I
was hired by the USGA in nineteen ninety nine and

(06:54):
worked for the USGA for around fifteen years, and you know,
enjoyed that work.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
And then.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
With the Texas Golf Hall of fame. I actually was
a volunteer on the board for six years and really
enjoyed that service, and then there was the opportunity to
throw my name in the hat for the executive director
position and really excited about it because we have so
much that we're doing now and that you know, our

(07:22):
mission is to honor the past, celebrate the present, and
inspire future generations of Texas golfers. And so we're working
really hard on all three of those legs of our
mission with the programs that we're doing. And I'd be
remiss if I didn't mention Andy that we have our
Gathering of Eagles celebration this year. You know, we induct

(07:42):
every other year, so we have a celebration on the
off year, and it's going to be this year in
Austin at Austin Country Club, which is one hundred and
twenty five year old club, by the way, and we're
celebrating one of our members, Harvey Pennock through the eyes
of his students, and Ben Crenshaw, Kite and Sandra Palmer
are all a part of our program that night. And

(08:04):
then in addition to that, since we're in Austin, twenty
one of our members are affiliated with the University of Texas,
and so we're going to celebrate kind of one hundred
years of the University of Texas Golf with some neat
video stuff and people were bringing in for that night
as well for that part of the program. So our

(08:24):
tickets and our table sales are going to be going
on sale here in the next week or so, and
so just want to mention that that, you know, we'd
love people to come join us. As going to be
a pretty cool night at Texas Golf.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
Ali, thanks so much. You go to Texas golfhof dot
org and you can find the virtual museum there. Continue
the great work. We look forward to talking to you soon.
And the October twenty second date for Gathering of Eagles
looks like it's going to be a fun night, so
we'll look forward to that and look forward to talking
to you soon.

Speaker 2 (08:54):
Thank you so much. Thanks for having us. Have a
great day. All right.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
That's Ali Jarrett, executive director of the Texas Golf Hall
of Fame. We'll visit with Brian gathright next to finish
up the show. It's eight forty five on the ticket
