Speaker 1 (00:00):
Interesting story I heard about, one of the many stories
about what's been happening here on the coast with tropical
cyclone Alfred. Now there's a young family, Louise, her name is.
She's pregnant with twins and has a three year old son. Right,
so she and her partner and the one child who's
on the outside, they hired a car from the Gold

(00:20):
Coast Airport and it was Monday to Thursday of last week,
so it was in Byron Bay and it was one
hundred and eighty dollars to hire the car from Monday
to Thursday.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
That's also not.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Too bad actually, So then Cyclone Alfred hit the Big
Owl and they couldn't return it to the Gold Coast
Airport everything because it was shut because we were told
to get off the roads and everything else. So the
rain was pretty significant and they didn't feel like they
were safe in Byron so their flights had been canceled,

(00:52):
so they just decided to drive to Sydney.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
But they're not all well, so they're not they were
tourists then, yes, right, so they're going to drive to Sydney.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
They're going to drive back to Sydney.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
Yeah, they couldn't actually return the car to the airport
because it was shut. Yeah, and they got fined two
three hundred and thirty dollars.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Because legally they're still hiring the car.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
But it's shut so they can't return it.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yeah, but then if they stayed in Byron then they'd
have an excuse. But they drove the car to back
to Sydney where they live, Yes, so they Yeah, technically
they fired the car to drive back to Sydney.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
Yeah, they should have left it at the airport as
close as possible. Then it's not their problem anymore. Well,
that's a weird one.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
But the flight's canceled from Sydney, so they couldn't get home.
But this is what we'd want to discuss because it's
actually really interesting the way which it comes across. Straight away,
the headline of the article is family stung with twenty
three hundred dollars bill with rental car, and it's like, okay,
I was totally intrigued, and then it's shut so they
can't get the car back there. They're in Byron, they

(01:57):
can't drive to the Gold Coast Airport where their flight's
been care so they've driven to Sydney.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
So the accommodation. They got kicked out of their accommodation.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
The staff actually said, hey, it's going to be pretty bad.
Why don't you get out of the accommodation, not of
the rental car people.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Yeah, it's weird in one aspect. They're driving the car
back to Sydney. Yeah, so they're legally they're renting the
car to drive back.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
Right, okay, and putting another thousand k's on it.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Yeah, so they're adding more stuff. So the more case
you put onto it, Yeah, the more you're going to
get a chance. They left the car there under stayed
in Byron. They had a valid excuse not to take
the car back. You guys were closed, so you can't
charge us for.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
That, but they still had to get home.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (02:42):
I know.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
It's doing my head into Okay, it just there's so
many questions.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Oh wow, that is really hard.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
And here's a twist.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
There's a twist.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
The rental company refunded the two and three hundred dollars story.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
But it makes no sense that so you can just
take the car wherever you want, can you? What do
you make of this situation? Does it make any sense?
What would you have done? And do you think the
right outcome has occurred here, Zarah.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
For what do you think?

Speaker 4 (03:14):
Well, they obviously arrived on Monday, so my thoughts. Uncle
Alfred was announced everywhere that he was coming.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Why wouldn't you turn around.

Speaker 3 (03:24):
And go home?

Speaker 1 (03:25):
Very good point.

Speaker 4 (03:27):
Someone, you've got a little kid, you pregnot a twins
for thinking people for thinking.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
People thought.

Speaker 4 (03:36):
I know, people thought Uncle Alfred wasn't going to be
bad and all the rest of it. And thankfully he
wasn't as bad as what they predicted, but he was
still bad.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Enough to cause a lot of damage. Why wouldn't you
turn around? Yeah, good point, very good point. Sarah Mel
from Bundle. What do you think should they have gotten charge?
Should they have stayed port?

Speaker 4 (03:55):
What do you reckon not being charged? Because there's a
plate and you can hire car and so I drop
off place so it doesn't matter if it's your O car.
There's one in state each state. Yeah, yep, so you

(04:17):
can pick out drop off. I think you can do
it all around Europe.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
Not awesome, thank you. Now they did say that the
one way, yes, yeah, so that was always a thing.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
That was a thing. But we did bring up the
fact that off it. We brought the fact that maybe
they didn't have insurance that pay for the insurance. Well,
I think I've hired a car once or twice. I
can't hear you.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
I don't think you're getting a four day car, high
Front and addy Bucks with no insurance very much.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
Yes, do you never get for your car?

Speaker 1 (04:49):
I cannot hear you getting to your cabin.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
Sometimes you guys do big for the driver.
