Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, So there was a massive thing this week.
(00:03):
Queensland has made Jacks Law permanence. Now this is of
course expanding police powers to search people for knives. And
because it's known as Jack's Law because of Jack Beasley
who was stabbed and killed on the Gold Coast in
twenty nineteen one all night out with friends and his
parents have done an amazing job over the last couple
of years to raise awareness and also to really campaign
(00:23):
for better knife crime laws. We've got Brett on the phone. Hello, Brett,
how are you?
Speaker 2 (00:28):
OHI guys, thanks, thanks for having me on.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
That's all right. Now, what you were in parliament this week?
Tell us about the vibe and tell us about what
was said about this now huge news for Jack's Law.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yeah, well Jack Law, as you know, he has been
a trial for the last few years and it's been
so successful as a trial, so it's time to make
the laws permanent. So yeah, Blinda and I were up
in Parliament all day yesterday actually for about twelve hours
it and you know, so they debated to make it
permanent and vaded so it all got voted for. Yeah,
and so Jack's Law now is in cemented in the
(01:05):
history books and it will be out bermanent all across
Queensland anywhere any time. So we're very very proud of
what we've created with Jack's Law, and you know it's
working and it's it's saving life. So yeah, we're super honored.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
Yeah, I want to thank you for my part of
the family mate, because I've got a seventeen year old
boy and his mates were all out and having a
good time without him at the moment. But I want
to thank you and your family. Sorry about it. I'm
really really sorry about the tragedy for this to come forward,
but it's just I want to thank you for my family,
for other younger boys and girls, for this law coming
(01:42):
to you, because yeah, just if I feel a lot
safer for my boys and girls to go out, it's great.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Well, this is what we do. What we do, it's
all about community safety and at the end of the day,
trev as you just said, we all want our children
to come home safe. You know, you should be able
to out of our beautiful Gold Coast beaches and you
know the Gold Case is such a magnificent spot. You know,
they should be able to go out and go to
meccas and the time days and the beaches and come
(02:11):
home safe, you know, and now that these extraordinary powers
are Jack's Law, you know, the Queens and Police Service
does such a fantastic job. They've wandered. Over one hundred
and sixteen thousand people now have been monitored just in
the last twelve months, and we're confiscated nearly nearly fifteen
hundred weapons off the streets with Queensland. So you've got
(02:32):
to stop and ask yourself, you know, how many lives
potentially have those weapons save. So we're super honored, we're
super proud of what we've created. And you know it's
gone Australia white. So that's even better.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
That's even better. And it calls under the new legislation
as well, officers will be able to use the scanner
which they scan people with in a relevant place. So
that means it's like a licensed premier is public transport,
public transport, vehicle, retail premises, safe night precinct shoppings out
are sporting are in today with venue. So now there's
more places, yeah because obviously yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
To any problem.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Yeah, that's awesome.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
So it's any public place now. So it was all
on public transport, as you said, strauvin Centers, et cetera,
et cetera. But now it's anywhere, any time. Yeah, and
you know, which is fantastic. It's a non invasive it's
a time little one that literally takes thirty seconds. The
police don't even touch you, lay a finger on you
at all. They just run the wan day. You're much
like going into an airport. Oh yeah. And if you're
(03:31):
not carrying any anything on you, in your little bum
bag or whatever you whatever you want to call it,
you know, yeah, that's right, and there's there's no problem.
So if you've got a weapon on you, then you
will be caught and you will be charged.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
So and that's the thing, Brett, I mean, it doesn't
affect to anyone because if you're carrying a weapon, you
shouldn't be carrying a weapon anyway.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
So this is absolutely I modeled sort of, I modeled
Jack's law off a bit like the random breath test.
And you know, it's you know, the police can pull
you up randomly and and just you know, have you've
been drinking? Now I haven't soved blown the bag and
if you haven't been drinking, off you go. So this
is exactly the same. But you walk on around, so
(04:13):
there's no difference. And I mean Jack's Law is one
of the biggest and the most powerful laws ever to
have been introducing in the Coinsline Parliament since probably the
random breath tests and that's some forty years ago since
that was in and we know how well that how
many lives has that taken off the streets.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
So yeah, well, congratulations Brett to you and Belinda as well.
Thank you for everything you've done. We look forward to
chatting with you again soon. Now go and enjoy your beer.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Thanks very much for me. I appreciate it.
