Speaker 1 (00:10):
You're listening to a Muma Mia podcast. Mumma Mea acknowledges
the traditional owners of land and waters that this podcast
is recorded on.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Hi.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
I'm Claire Murphy. This is Mumma MIA's twice daily news podcast.
The Quickie. Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman seem to be
the picture of happily married, at least from this outsider's
point of view. But now that the Aussie Golden couple
are divorcing, it's upset a lot of us, including those
who feel like if they can't make it, surely love
is dead for all of us. We'll be looking into

(00:42):
that today. And also we have found out that more
sunscreens are being taken off the shelves and mid concerns
they aren't the SBF they claim to be. We'll discuss
a fallout of a celebrity marriage and what we need
to know about the tools we used to be sunsafe soon,
but before we get there, here's the letters from the
Quikie Newsroom for Thursday October two. Jane Goodall, the conservationist
and primatologist who spent her life researching chimpanzees, has died.

(01:06):
The ninety one year old's passing was announced by the
Jane Goodell Institute in an Instagram post saying she died
of natural causes while in California on a speaking tour.
Goodull's work changed science. Spending time living amongst chimpanzees in Africa,
she discovered that they shared many traits we only thought
exclusive to humans, including their ability to use tools. She

(01:28):
also got to know them as personalities, changing the way
we viewed our closest living biological relatives, better understanding their
complex social and emotional communities. She has spent the past
few decades of her life dedicated to educating the world
on humanitarian causes and spreading her message of protecting the
natural world, spending up to three hundred days a year

(01:48):
traveling to spread the word. Survivors of one of the
deadly Barley bombing attacks have gathered for a beachside tribute
two decades on from the terrorist attack. Wednesday marked twenty
years since the two thousand and five bombings, which saw
four Australians amongst twenty people killed when multiple suicide and
car bombs targeted the Indonesian province. It was the second

(02:10):
major attack on the island in three years, after a
two thousand and two Ballely bombing killed two hundred and
two people, including eighty eight Australians. Australia marked twenty years
since the two thousand and five attack on Wednesday, with
memorial services in Bali and Newcastle, the home of three
of the victims. The Northern Territory, the only jurisdiction left

(02:30):
in Australia without current voluntary assisted dying laws, is set
to reinstate the legislation that was struck down thirty years ago.
The territory became the first Australian jurisdiction to make voluntary
euthanasia legal in nineteen ninety five, but the laws were
quickly overturned by the Howard government. All six states and
the Act have since passed their own laws allowing it.

(02:50):
Acting Anti Chief Minister Jered Maylee said a Legal and
Constitutional Affairs Committee report and proposed drafting instructions would be
tabled on the next sitting day for debate. The Global
some Wood flotilla trying to deliberate to Gaza says unidentified
vessels approached some of its boats as it got closer
to a zone where Israel has imposed naval blockade. The

(03:11):
flotilla consists of more than forty civilian boats carrying around
five hundred people, amongst them parliamentarians, lawyers and activists, including
Swedish Climate campaign at Greta Thunburg. It aims to break
Israel's blockade of the Palestinian enclave, releasing a statement saying
we continue to sail to Gaza, approaching the one hundred
and twenty nautical mile mark, near the area where previous

(03:32):
flotillas have been intercepted or attacked. It was not clear
who operated the vessels that approached the flotilla. A video
post on the flotilla's Instagram page said an Israel military
vessel approached its boats, carrying out dangerous maneuvers and damaging
its communication systems before departing. Fresh off her catwalk debut
at Paris Fashion Week, Matilda superstar Mary Fowler has inter

(03:55):
new one year deal with her English club Manchester City.
Fowler joined the club in twenty twenty two on a
long term deal that runs until twenty twenty six. She's
now signed on for a one year extension, taking her
time at man City until at least twenty twenty seven.
The younger status as one of the best players in
the World was highlighted by selection in the PFA Women's
Super League Team of the Year. Despite her campaign being

(04:17):
katawed by a serious knee injury in April, she is
determined to be fit for the Matilda's run of the
Asian Cup, which kicks off here in Australia in March. Chunk,
a towering brown bear with a broken jaw, has swept
the competition in the popular Fat Bear Week contest, his
first win after narrowly finishing in second place in three
previous years. The annual online competition allows viewers to follow

(04:39):
twelve bears in an Alaska National Park on live webcams.
They can then cast their votes for their favorite bear
as they eat as much as they possibly can to
fatten up ahead of a long hibernation. The single elimination
tournament lasts one week, with Chunk, known officially as Bear
thirty two, beating out Bear eight hundred and fifty six,
who doesn't have a nickname, in the final bracket. Organizers

(05:01):
estimated chunks pre hibernation weight at five hundred and forty kilos.
The animal able to consume a huge amount of salmon
that they catch as they at to head upstream to spawn.
That's despite dealing with a broken jaw he likely sustained
in a fight with another bear. That's the latest news headlines. Next,
Nicole and Keith, two people most of us will never meet,
but they've got us despairing that love just might be over.

(05:24):
We find out why with a little added reset on
those feelings after this. On Tuesday, September thirty, in Nashville, Tennessee,
documents were filed with the local authorities from Ossie actor
Nicole Kidman. In these documents, she filed for divorce from

(05:45):
her husband, Keith Urban, the Australian country singer to whom
she's been married for nearly twenty years. In fact, they'd
just celebrated their nineteen year anniversary three months ago, Nicole
posting a pick of them together with their arms around
each other. He didn't post anything, but did hard Emogi
respond to hers. The documents cite irreconcilable differences, but there

(06:06):
are reports flying across the internet from jealousy over Cole's
career choices and younger leading men, too much time spent
apart Keith's alleged infidelity in the talk about a woman
believed to have already become his new girlfriend. There are
also stories about their prenup, details, their custody arrangement, and
an array of AI created interviews of both Urban and

(06:26):
Kidman explaining why their marriage ended. They are not real
unless one or both of them decided to share the
inner workings of their relationship. We may never know the
true reason for it coming to an end. But maybe
it's the not knowing that has thrown the collective Internet
hive mind into a spin. Or maybe it was a
fact that a little over a year ago, Keith stood
in front of an audience and thanked his wife for

(06:48):
her devotion.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
We got married in June two thousand and six, and
barely four months into our marriage, my addictions that I
had done really nothing about blew our marriage as mother
ains and I went into the Betty Ford Center for
three months. Four months into a marriage, I'm in rehab

(07:11):
for three months with no idea what was going to
happen to us. And if you want to see what
love in action really looks like, give that a whirl.
Nick pushed through every negative voice, I'm sure even some
of her own, and she shows love and here we
are tonight, eighteen years later.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
But one thing that keeps us wondering about the demise
of what seemed to be such a special and supportive marriage.
Is if it can happen to them, it can definitely
happen to me. Are we putting too much of our
own hopes and dreams into these people who had it
all and lost it? Are we saying that if they
can't make it, what hope do we have? Jessica Clark
mum and me as managing editor, I wrote an article

(07:51):
about this, jess why are we so emotionally invested in
this whole thing with Keith and Nicole?

Speaker 3 (07:57):
Well, Nicole feels like one of us. She's Ozzie, Keith's
Ozzie as well, She's one of ours. So even though
she's this big Hollywood megastar and he is this super
musician overseas, they feel way more close to home than
other big Hollywood celebrities because they're ours, They're Aussie, we
own them sort of.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
It's not just Australia obsessed with this though, right because
people are talking about this a lot all over the
globe right now. Do you think it might also be
due to the fact that Nicole and Keith have presented
to us this redemption arc fairy tale, like she's come
off her disastrous marriage to Tom Cruise and the fallout
of not speaking to the two children that she has
with him, and then he's recovered from addiction and he's

(08:38):
you know, reformed from his bad boy years, and then
they presented this beautiful, affectionate, wonderful, loving family, at least
to the public's eye. Do you think that that redemption
arc fairy tale really resonated with us? Is that why
we're obsessed? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (08:52):
Exactly. They did have this beautiful, well wind fairy tale romance.
I mean, the story of how they met, you know,
they crossed paths and then he was nervous to call her,
and then within a year they were in love and
getting married and built this beautiful life together. And we
were with Nicole when she went through the whole Tom
Cruise scientology circus. And we've heard Keith talk about how,

(09:14):
you know, he battled with loaninginess for a very long time.
So it did feel like this was a couple who
proved that love exists and love can exist at any
time in your life. And they were so open and
honest and beautiful in how they expressed their love for
each other. They were very PDA heavy. I mean maybe

(09:34):
some would say too much, but they're always kissing, always cuddling,
always praising each other in public. So it was this
gold standard of you know, loving out loud and being
unashamed of your partner.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
So what do you think about now? This narrative shift
from it's them getting divorced, it's their business to us
looking in and saying, well, if they can't make it,
nobody can, and surely this means love is dead.

Speaker 3 (09:59):
I mean, look, my feelings on that are very clear.
I don't think that we can call a nineteen year marriage,
a twenty year relationship a failure. They had this beautiful life.
They've got two children together, They've traveled the world, they've
survived addiction, they've survived you know, the highs and lows
of life and Hollywood and red carpets and everything in between.

(10:20):
I don't think that we can say that this is
a failure because there was twenty years of love that happened,
twenty years of life, and just because they are divorcing
does not erase the fact that they had this beautiful
love story. It doesn't erase the years that they've showed
up for each other. Between getting together and getting divorced.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
So we need to look at this less as oh
my gosh, love is dead to more like this is
just the natural ending of their love story.

Speaker 3 (10:46):
Yeah, it's a story, and like every story, you know,
you turn the page and something else happens. You know,
there's a different chapter. And I think it's a slippery
slope to start, you know, crying love is dead, because
the average person looks at that and goes, well, if
they can't make it and love is dead, then then
what am I supposed to do? But that's not how
love works for everyone. And I don't think we can

(11:07):
say that Nicole Kingman will never have another beautiful love story,
and saying for Keith, I mean again, we don't know
what's the circumstances of their split. It's all speculation at
this point. But yeah, let's not cry poor Nicole, poor
Keith because they had this messy, complicated human love story
in between that I don't think we can discount just
because the marriage is ending.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
Next, sunscreen is back in the headlines for all the
wrong reasons. We find out what to do if your
sunscreen is on that SPF isn't what it claims to
be listed. For the longest time, Ossie's have been told
to slip, slop, slap, and then also seek and slide,

(11:53):
but the slop part of that message has gotten caught
up in a testing scandal that has left many sunscreen
appliers wondering if they ever got any protection from it
at all. This week, the Therapeutic Goods Administration or TGA
announced that ten more sunscreens have now also been caught
up in this testing debark, the one that saw ultraviolet
poll one of its popular products, Lean Screen SPF fifty

(12:14):
plus from shelves. Back in August, the TGA said this
about the results of testing the efficacy of the SPF
fifty claim. They said lean Screen was manufactured using the
same base formulation as a number of other sunscreens. The
manufacture of that base formulation, wild Child Laboratories PtyLtd, has
now received preliminary SPF testing results for that base formulation.

(12:38):
The preliminary testing indicates that this base formulation is unlikely
to have an SBF greater than twenty one. Preliminary testing
of specific goods manufactured using the base formulation indicate that
the SPF value of the goods may for at least
some of the goods be as low as SPF four.
Why this has happened is still under investigation, with the

(13:01):
TGA saying there were no manufacturing issues identified at the
wild Child facility to explain it. They say that in
their investigation into this, they I have found some testing
laboratories are more reliable than others, saying one facility in particular,
based in the UK, are a significant concern in that
they were responsible for testing many of the products that
use the lean screen based product, confirming the SBF fifty plus.

(13:25):
Many of the brands of sunscreen caught up in this
have chosen to pull their products from shelves for the
time being, while the TGA continues its investigation, telling consumers
if they've purchased one of the brands, and there are
quite a few of them now so we'll put the
full list in our show notes, it might be time
to consider another option. So how are we supposed to
trust that sunscreen is doing what it's meant to? I

(13:45):
spoke to dermatologists doctor Kara McDonald for an upcoming episode
of Mum and Me as women's health podcast, well about it.
She said this with regards to the SPF factor and
can we rely on that It's difficult. I think it's
worth just noting that all the sunscreens that have been recalled,
and we've just seen the last few weeks that more
and more have been recalled after this pro they're all

(14:08):
mineral sunscreen, okay, And what we do know is that
traditionally it's much much harder to get a high consistent
SBF with a mineral sunscreen. So if you're looking at
zinc sunscreens, then the chances of that sunscreen being a
high SBF, if it feels nice and lightweight, then it's
actually quite a difficult thing to achieve. And don't get

(14:29):
me wrong, there are some amazing brands out there that
have mineral sunscreens that have a nice consistency, But on
the whole, the chemical sunscreens are much more reliable for
SPF and they're going to give you a much higher
SBF with a nicer consistency. So ladtip is, if you
are worried about SBF and you're worried about sun protection,
lean towards your chemical sunscreens. And the other thing just last,

(14:51):
but not least, is even an SBF four, even an
SBF ten, you are still getting significant benefits against the
sun compared to no sunscreen at all, so it's less
important to panic so much about whether it was SBF
fifty or thirty. It's more important to use something. But
of course we would like to know that our on

(15:12):
screens are reliable and hopefully the authorities will take some
control over that and make it a little bit more
reassuring for the consumer in the near future. Thanks for
taking some time to feed your mind with us today.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
