Speaker 1 (00:10):
You're listening to a Mumma Mia podcast. Mumma Mea acknowledges
the traditional owners of land in waters that this podcast
is recorded on Hi. I'm Cassandra Green from Mamma MIA's
twice daily news podcast, The Quiki With your Headlines. For Wednesday,
September seventeen, a report from the United Nations Commission of

(00:31):
Inquiry found Israel has committed genocide in Gaza. In addition,
it found top Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahoo,
incited these acts. The report cites examples of aid blockages,
the scale of killings, forced displacement, and the destruction of
a fertility clinic to back up the finding. Navi Palai,
head of the Commission and former International Criminal Court judge,

(00:54):
announced the finding, saying that Israel has orchestrated a genocidal
campaign for almost two years now with the intent to
destroy the Palestinian group in Gaza. Israel's ambassador to the UN,
Daniel Moron, called the report scandalous and fake. The commission
seventy two who page legal analysis is the strongest UN
finding to date, but the body is independent and does

(01:15):
not officially speak for the United nations. The UN has
not yet used the term genocide, but it is under
mounting pressure to do so. Israel is fighting a genocide
case at the International Court of Justice in the Hague.
It has rejected such accusations, citing its right to self
defense following the deadly October seven attack, which killed twelve
hundred people and resulted in two hundred and fifty one

(01:37):
hostages according to Israeli figures. According to the Ministry of
Health in Gaza, there have been sixty three thousand Palestinian
fatalities since the war began. The nineteen forty eight UN
Genocide Convention, adopted in the wake of the Holocaust, defines
genocide as crimes committed with intent to destroy, in whole
or in part a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group.

(01:59):
To count as genocide, at least one of five acts
must have occurred. The UN Commission found that Israel committed
four of them. Prosecutors will seek the death penalty for
Charlie Kirk's alleged shooter, identified as twenty two year old
Tyler Robinson. Kirk, a right wing activist in America, was
shot dead while at a campus event at Utah Valley
University last week. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

(02:21):
Robinson stands accused of firing a single rifle shot from
a rooftop on campus. Utah County District Attorney Jeffrey Gray
said he's up for seven charges, including aggravated murder, obstruction
of justice, and witness tampering. Prosecutors revealed a series of
messages between Robinson and his roommate in which they claim
he appears to confess. Prosecutors said that on the day

(02:42):
of the shooting, Robinson texted his roommate, who was not
identified in court papers, but who reportedly is cooperating with authorities,
to look for a note under a keyboard. It reportedly read,
I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and
I'm going to take it. In the filing's text, the
roommate asked if Robinson was the only one who did it,
which he confirmed. Robinson allegedly also wrote that he'd had

(03:05):
enough of Kirk's hatred. Robinson was at large for thirty
hours before he turned himself into police after his parents
saw images of the gunman and confronted him. According to
the filings, DNA found on the trigger of what authorities
believe was the murder weapon was linked to Robinson. Prosecutor's claim.
Robinson will be appointed a defense lawyer, and his next

(03:26):
court hearing is scheduled for September twenty nine. Vogue's new editor,
Chloe Marle, has come under fire for her fashion sense
after a series of images of her attending New York
Fashion Week were published. She's been appointed the new head
of editorial Content at Vogue after Anna Winter's editor in
chief Robs dissolved and she was appointed Chief Content officer
of Conde Nast. Online trolls were quick to criticize Miles's

(03:49):
look at the Kate show, in which she wore a
plain black camusol and a crowcheted skirt with minimal orange
slides and her hair slipped back. However, other commenters were
on her side, supporting the look and the fact that
she is there to work, not to be a professional
clothes horse. Many people who are aware of the busy
schedule of fashion week also concurred given she would have
spent the time being hustled from show to show. Merle

(04:12):
has a proven record at Vogue, having joined the company
in twenty eleven and worked her way up. She became
online editor in twenty twenty three and has doubled traffic
to the site, strengthened newsletters, and extended their Vogue Weddings vertical.
She also is responsible for the ever popular Dogue edition
featuring celebrity pets. Miles studied at Brown University and is

(04:32):
the daughter of American actress Candice Bergen, who famously played
the editor of Vogue in the hit series Sex and
the City. On Tuesday, images of Donald Trump and sex
offender Jeffrey Epstein were projected onto Windsor Castle by protesters.
Four people have been arrested after the incident, with the
castle due to host the American President's meeting with the
King on Wednesday. It marks an unprecedented second state visit

(04:56):
for the president. UK police's statements that four adults were
arrested on suspicion of malicious communications, describing the incident as
a public stunt. They remain in custody. On Monday, democrats
in the US House of Reps made public a birthday
letter allegedly written from Trump to Epstein twenty years ago.
The White House has denied its authenticity. The letter was

(05:18):
also projected onto the castle, along with pictures of Epstein's victims,
news clips about the case and police reports. The release
of the letter has brought renewed attention to an issue
that has become a political thorn in President Trump's side.
That's your evening news headlines. On Thursday's episode of The Quickie,
Unpacking the UN report on Gaza Plus, we unveil exactly

(05:40):
how much money you need to be happy. Listen to

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
