Speaker 1 (00:10):
You're listening to a Mumma Mea podcast. Mumma Mea acknowledges
the traditional owners of land and waters that this podcast
is recorded on. Hi. I'm Cassandra Green from Momma MEA's
twice daily news podcast, The Quikie with Your Headlines for Tuesday,
July twenty nine. So Michael Hill, owner of the multimillion

(00:31):
dollar jewelry chain of the same name, has died aged
eighty six. The entrepreneur and philanthropist was born in New
Zealand in nineteen thirty eight, months before the outbreak of
World War II. According to a statement from his company,
So Michael was a lover of music. He dropped out
of school, but pivoted into the world of jewelry, joining
his uncle's family owned store. He founded his own business

(00:54):
alongside his wife in nineteen seventy nine, deciding to expand
into the Australian market. He won international awards for his
window displays and revolutionized the store's advertising. Michael Hill International
owns a total of three hundred and two store globally
across Australia, Canada and New Zealand. In twenty twenty four,

(01:14):
the business earned a total revenue of almost six hundred
and fifty million, so Michael is survived by his wife,
Lady Christine, and their two children. President Donald Trump has
signaled that Australia could be hit with tariffs of fifteen
to twenty percent. It comes after he reached agreements with
major trading partners like Japan and the European Union to

(01:35):
set a baseline tariff of fifteen percent. Mister Trump said
in Scotland overnight that his administration will notify about two
hundred countries soon of their new world tariff rate. He
said it would be somewhere in the fifteen to twenty
percent range. This would mean potentially doubling the ten percent
rate that US importers pay for most Australian goods. Assistant

(01:57):
Treasurer Daniel Molino said Australia is working with the US
to get the best possible deal and maximize Australian access
to their market. While the US is Australia's fourth largest
expert market, sales to the US only account for five
percent of the nation's total exports. While this means it
may not have the biggest impact on US, Australia is

(02:18):
particularly vulnerable to negative changes in the global Economy Prime
Minister Anthony Albanzi and Trade Minister Don Farrell have maintained
that Australian products should not be hit with any tariffs.
According to CNN, four people, including an NYPD officer, have
been killed in a shooting in Midtown Manhattan. The gunman
opened fire at three hundred and forty five Park Avenue,

(02:41):
a skyscraper which houses a number of financial firms, including
Blackstone and KPMG, along with the NFL headquarters. CNN reports
that the gunmen shot himself after the rampage. At this stage,
there are only early reports, but according to The New
York Post, the gunman was wearing a bulletproof vest and
carrying an ar style rifle. New York Police Commissioner Jessica

(03:04):
Tish said the scene had been contained and the loane
shooter neutralized. The FBI set agents from its New York
field office were also responding to provide support at the scene.
It's widely believed that taking ten thousand steps a day
is an ideal benchmark for physical activity, but a new
study suggests it may be far less. Researchers from the

(03:26):
University of Sydney reviewed fifty seven studies spanning more than
ten countries. They looked at how step count impacted the
risk of dying from heart disease in cancer, as well
as the risk of cancer, type two diabetes, dementia, and depression.
Their findings were that just seven thousand steps a day
could be enough to boost essential health markers. In fact,

(03:47):
seven thousand and ten thousand steps had almost exactly the
same risk of death, which was reduced by forty seven
percent compared to no walking. They added that any increase
in daily steps, even to a modest number like four thousand,
delivers health benefits. Jeffrey Epstein's longtime co conspirator, Glaane Maxwell,
is attempting to have her conviction for sex trafficking over time.

(04:10):
People Magazine obtained her petition to the Supreme Court, citing
that she should have received immunity as a part of
Epstein's controversial deal with federal prosecutors. Epstein served just over
a year in prison after pleading guilty in two thousand
and eight to state charges following an agreement with Attorney
for the Southern District of Florida, Alexander Acosta. In the deal,

(04:32):
federal prosecutors dropped the charges against him as long as
he pled guilty to state charges. Maxwell's attorneys claimed that
there was a clause in the deal stating that criminal
charges would not be brought against any potential co conspirators.
They claim Maxwell should be covered by the agreement. Epstein
was indicted in New York on sex trafficking charges in
twenty nineteen and died by suicide in a Manhattan jail.

(04:55):
Maxwell was convicted in twenty twenty one and sentenced to
twenty years in prison. She also recently met with prosecutors
following the backlash of the Trump administration's handling of the
Epstein files. The Court of Appeals has previously denied Maxwell's
appeal petition. That's your evening news headlines on Wednesday's episode
of The Quikie. There's a push to scrap our net

(05:17):
zero targets, but what does that actually mean? Plus why
joy span is a new measurement of success in life.
