Speaker 1 (00:10):
You're listening to a Muma Mea podcast. Mumma Mea acknowledges
the traditional owners of land and waters that this podcast
is recorded on Hi. I'm Claire Murphy from Mumma MEA's
twice daily news podcast, The Quikie with Your Evening Headline.
So Friday September nineteen, dawn raids have led to the
arrest of seven young men and teenagers over the high

(00:30):
profile stabbing deaths of two children in Melbourne. Twelve year
old chol Hk and fifteen year old dal Akeng died
after being attacked while walking home at Cobblebank in Melbourne's
out Northwest on September sixth The pair were ambushed by
masked males armed with machetes and other bladed weapons. Another
boy walking with the victims after the group watched a
basketball game together, managed to escape. Police raided properties in Melton,

(00:54):
South Thornhill Park, Caroline Springs, Sunbury Wallet, Hillside and Sidnum
on Thursday morning, arresting seven males aged between fifteen and nineteen.
Assistant Commissioner Martin O'Brien said the arrests followed almost two
weeks of diligent and thorough police work. All seven will
now be interviewed by Victoria police detectives. Queensland has become
the first Australian state to ban pill testing, with medical

(01:17):
experts warning the move could cost lives. The legal crackdown
follows state government moves to scrap one point five million
dollars in public funding for pill testing services run by
Checkpoint pill testing sites, one in Brisbane, the other on
the Gold Coast, forcing services to close back in April.
The ban passed in state Parliament late Thursday night, making
any pill testing operations illegal. Health Minister Tim Nichols said

(01:40):
they wanted to make it clear that the Chrysophilly government
has a zero tolerance approach to illicit drugs, saying there's
no safe way to take illegal drugs and that this
government does not support publicly or privately funded pill testing.
He claims drug checking services send the wrong message to Queenslanders.
Opposition Health spokesperson Sharon Frendman counted the Health Minister's comments

(02:00):
saying the benefits of pill testing are life saving, saying
that's not me, saying that as a politician it is
Queensland's peak medical body. Israeli tanks have advanced along two
gateways to the center of Gaza City, while internet and
phone lines were cut off for several hours, signaling a
potential escalation in ground operations. Israeli forces controlled Gaza City's
eastern suburbs and in recent days have been pounding the

(02:23):
shag Rudwan and Tel Alhawa areas, from where they would
be positioned to advance on central and western areas, where
most of the population is sheltering. According to the Territories
Health Ministry, at least eighty five Palestinians have been killed
by Israeli strikes or gunfire across the Gaza Strip in
the past twenty four hours, most in Gaza City. The
Israeli military said four of its own personnel had been

(02:45):
killed during combat in the south of the Strip. The
reactions to Jimmy Kimmel's broadcast suspension have varied from celebration
to calls to stand for freedom of speech. While President
Donald Trump posted it was great news for America, former
President Barack Obama pointed out that the current administration had
spent years complaining about cancel culture and that they've now
taken it to a new and dangerous level. Kimmel was

(03:07):
indefinitely suspended from his late night shih after remarks about
the assassination of right wing activists Charlie Kirk. The Maga
gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie
Kirk as anything other than one of them. Former late
night host David Letterman says he feels bad because he
says we can all see where this is going, saying
it's managed media, it's no good, and that actually it's

(03:28):
silly and ridiculous. Brandon Carr, the federal Communications Minister, said
local broadcasters have an obligation to serve the public interest
and while this may be an unprecedented decision, it's important
for broadcasters to push back on programming they determine full
short of community values. Conservative podcaster Megan Kelly said that
Kimmel got on the air and falsely claimed Charlie Kirk's

(03:49):
killer was Maga, essentially smearing an entire movement. Comedian Mike
Boiglia called on fellow comedians to support their own and
said he'd spend time defending comedians he doesn't agree with,
but if they don't call out the insanity of pulling
Kimmel off the air, then don't bother spouting off about
free speech anymore. Stephen Colbert, whose own talk show will
end in twenty twenty six, told The New York Post

(04:10):
that with an autocrash referring to US President Donald Trump,
you cannot give an inch, saying Jimmy, I stand with
you and your staff one hundred percent. Kimmel has reportedly
been given a list of demands he'll need to meet
in order to be allowed to return to hosting the show,
including that the ABC hold formal discussions about their commitment
to professionalism and accountability, asking for Kimmel to deliver an

(04:31):
apology to the Kirk family and to make a meaningful
personal donation to the Kirk family and Charlie Kirk's nonprofit,
Turning Point USA. That's your latest news headlines. For more
from the Quikie, like on Monday, where we'll be looking
into the US's long history of its politics, intercepting with
its entertainers from McCarthyism to Rosanne and Kimmel. Listen to

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
