You're listening to Amma Mia podcast. Mamma Mia acknowledges the
traditional owners of land and waters that this podcast is
recorded on.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
If I just use a cream, I feel like it
disappears throughout the day. Yes, makeup is my therapy.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
I'm I'm obsess and I don't even feel guilty body.
Hello and welcome to you Beauty, the daily podcast for
your Face. I'm Lucy Neville and this is in Her
Bag where I sit down with one of the biggest
names in beauty and I snooped through their makeup bag.
Our guest today is Amy Costano. Amy began her journey
(00:48):
as one of the original beauty influences, creating elevated makeup
content on Instagram back when the app was still in
its infancy. Her early success on social media paved the
way for her to launch her YouTube channel, where she
continued to share her expertise and passion for beauty. She
then co founded a Sero, a private boutique gym in Sydney,
and today with over half a million Instagm Grand followers,
(01:10):
she is one of Australia's most successful influences. She has
become an expert in building a personal brand and turning
your passion into a full time job. Today we're talking
about her journey with beauty where it all began, how
to contour like a pro, and the trench. She can't
get enough of glass skin. I had to find the
liner in my bag. What Amy. Thank you so much
(01:35):
for being here on your beauty today.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Thanks for having me.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
Talk to me about your personal journey with beauty.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Okay, well, ever since I was young, I could remember
watching my mum put makeup on. It was a thing
that she did every morning, and then playing with makeup.
Her makeup. She always had, you know, the esday Lauder
packs that had one hundred pieces of makeup in them,
So I would just play with all of her makeup,
just loved makeup. Would always get in trouble at school
(02:01):
for wearing too much makeup.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
Here's your look in high school?
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Oh gosh, foundation that was very much darker than my skin.
Dark eyeliner, Yeah, that was the little lot right. Yeah.
I would always get in trouble. So every morning, get
to school, be sent straight to the bathroom to wash
it off. Like I didn't care. But every morning I'd
apply makeup and then I got into like the world
of Instagram and just sharing my makeup and tips and tricks,
(02:29):
and then it turned into people being like, oh, can
you do makeup for clients. It would be like friends
of friends of friends, and then I started this whole
like makeup artist thing. I'm not a makeup artist. Then
I was doing it on the weekend, so Saturday and Sunday.
Working full time in finance Monday to Friday, and then
Saturday and Sunday, I was like a makeup artist on
(02:51):
the weekends.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
What did you find your clients came to you for?
Did you have like a signature.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Look I did? It was very like soft glam but yeah,
very clean makeup.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
So I did a lot of weddings. I think that's
where you'd start, right as a makeup artist. You like
get into weddings and events and people sped and money.
They want to look their best on their wedding day.
So that's what I went into.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
So interesting that you didn't have that background. It just
came from your passion for.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
You, you know.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
Literally, Okay, talk to me about trends. You mentioned Instagram
and social media. What are some trends that you're seeing
at the moment that you're loving.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
Glass skin glass skin, Like, I think that's, you know,
something that everyone's loving at the moment. And perfecting that clear,
glassy skin.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Law, how do you do that?
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Well, I guess it's a lot of skincare. That's the
main thing. Obviously having a good base to play with
for myself, Like, my skin's been a massive journey. I
used to have the worst skin about two years ago,
and I just kept on working on it, getting treatments
and making sure that skin care was a priority for me.
Applying makeup is a very personal thing, right, Like you
(03:58):
could start with doing powder first, if that's what suits you, like,
whatever works for you. I feel like playing with makeup
feeling what suits you, I think is something that you
should stick with.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
And what about trends that you're not into.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
I don't think there is anything that I'm not into,
Like I'll give it a try for sure, but yeah,
like I mentioned a lot of things that I'm seeing
on social media different ways to apply makeup, and I
think that's a very personal thing. Whatever works for you,
definitely stick with it. What about beauty icons? Who do
you look to for inspiration? Celebrities, creators? I mean, I
(04:34):
can't go past j Lo like she's a classic glam girl.
I just love how she always caters her makeup, hair, outfit.
It's a whole look. Yeah, Like it's art basically. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
In terms of creators kind of on social media, who
are your favorites to follow?
Speaker 2 (04:51):
I would say I love Just Hunt Yep, owner of
Refire Beauty. She's just amazing, such an incredible brand as Yeah,
and it only started like three years ago and it's
just going crazy.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
Well, it's time to unzip your makeup bag because I
know for so many people you are the beauty icon, right,
your makeup is what they replicating in the morning, and
now we're going to tell them how you get it.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
My favorite.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
Let's talk about hair first. Okay, let's talk about hair,
because your hair looks amazing.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
Oh thank you. So I've recently discovered the new Dice
in air straight Dyson is crazy in innovation, right, So
they've created like a hair straightener, so wet to dry
hair straightener that has no hot plates. It's all air.
That's crazy. It's crazy. It takes me like twenty minutes
to like dry my hair usually probably like an hour
(05:46):
to hour twenty. I'm in love with the diceon air
straight so good.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
And these products you have here their hair products.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
So this one is this one is something that I
use on my hair. It's a like a heat protectant, yeah,
but also smooths out your hair.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Oh what is it?
Speaker 2 (06:01):
So it's IGK good behavior. It's basically like a keratin
in spray. Okay, So you don't need to have the
sticky caratin in your hair. Wait that five awkward days
with the carrotter every day before I have Yeah, I
have to. So this is basically that, but like every
day you can spray your hair with it and it
protects your hair as well. Sogo.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Do you put it in damp hair? Yes?
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Okay, and then you can also put in dry hair,
so if you're restyling as well, it protects your hair.
Oh so this is fine. I love foundation. Fany soft
lip foundation. This is near This is newish. Yes, so
this foundation, it just gives you like that really beautiful
coverage without looking too heavy.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
So is it a medium coverage?
Speaker 2 (06:43):
It's say, I'd say medium, but you could build it
to feel so if you really wanted like that flawless,
flawless coverage, this you can get. But I just use
like one pump daily and just all over my face,
spread it out thinly and it's such a beautiful finish.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Do you use it with a brush?
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Yes, it has a matching brush as well, so yeah
that I love that foundation.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
And I mean it's in the name right soft lit.
Does it give you kind of a do we finish
or is it more of a soft mat?
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Yeah, it's kind of in between. So it's not like
that heavily glowy look that everyone I guess you see
on Instagram at the moment, But it's not that really
like dry Matt look as well, So it's like a
mix in between.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
And people think that Matt's coming back.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Really, I don't mind Matt because I'm such an oily
skin girl. So I grew up madifying like every Mat
product that you could think of.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
I had it during Matt Moost.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Yes, iconic, Yes, definitely.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
What's your next product?
Speaker 2 (07:43):
My next product? Okay, so next product is contouring? Yeah,
I think contouring is everything.
Speaker 1 (07:49):
What do you use contour for?
Speaker 2 (07:51):
I'd say, to like shape your face, give it definition.
I guess you'd obviously do highlighting as well with contouring,
so like to highlight areas and then like to put
areas back into your face. So where do you focus
contour under the cheekbones? Not too low though, so you
want to like bring it up on here this area
(08:11):
the middle of the cheek, around the forehead, just to
give you like that sunkiss look down the nose. One
of my top tipped lip contouring. Have you heard of that?
Speaker 1 (08:21):
I mean, I'm excited to hear your version of this.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
Tell me so I just contol like just under the lip,
so it creates a shadow.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
With your same contour. Yep.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
So this product right here, the fenty Beauty matchstick. This
is in the color Swedish. For me, it's a perfect.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Is that fuller tone? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (08:40):
So it's not too warm and it's not too cool.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
Because you're not using this as a bronzer right.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
No, Okay, so this is creating shadows on the face
to make it look like you've got you know, definition
in certain areas. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
And do you apply this with the brush?
Speaker 2 (08:54):
I apply it straight onto the face, but then you
blend it out with a brush. Yeah, so with like
a duo fiber brush. Yes, so you have two more
match sticks here, yes, but it comes with all different colors.
They have all different shades of brown. I mean it's Rihanna,
like she's extra, so she goes full on with her
(09:14):
color range is amazing. Yes, exactly this product. How do
you use this one? This one's more of like a
bronzo one. So this has like a shimmer effect to it,
So that's a mate contray stick. And then this is
like a bronzo one.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
And would you put that on top or a whole
different place?
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Yes? On top? Okay cool, So just like on the
tops of the cheekbones, like that highlight sort of look.
And then this one is the foundation color for me. Yeah,
so you can use it as foundation as well.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
Do you use that as foundation? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (09:43):
You can.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
You like touch ups with that?
Speaker 2 (09:45):
Ye. Interesting, But there's a whole color range. I couldn't
bring them all, but you've.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
Got more than this I do.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
Yeah, she's into the map. I love the mach stick.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
Tell me about this powder we have here.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
This is my go to as a Matt Girl. Translucent
powder is always, you know, in my kit and in
my routine. So this is a setting powder. I love baking,
Like I don't care what anyone says. Baking is just
something that I need to do otherwise my makeup doesn't last,
So for.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
People listening to this who think you're talking about like baking, Okay, yeah,
talk to me about baking what so?
Speaker 2 (10:30):
Yeah, so baking is yet your loose powder and you
put it in areas that you want to keep oil
free and set in place.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
So you put quite a bit though, right you do?
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Yeah, so you put quite a bit. Let it set
while you're doing like say you're your brows or something,
because that's like something that takes you in time to
bake a cake. So you do eye shutter or anything,
and it falls on to like this area. You can
just brush it off when you brush off the excess powder.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
Okay, so you have excess powder and then once it's
all set, you brush it away. Yes, And what is
the result of that if you didn't bake versus comparing
to baking.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
Makeup would just slide off?
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Literally, No, I want to see a picture of what
this looks like in the process as and truly because
I'm just like I've never baked before.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
Really, No, you need to you need to try it,
okay and then let me know.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
Yeah, well how do you avoid it looking cake? Because
I think like my biggest fear when it comes to
like powder is that I'll look like me in your ten.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
I guess a good powder, good quality powder like this
one from Laura Mercier. But I would also say, like
after wiping it off and when you're done with your makeup,
are setting sproke?
Speaker 1 (11:44):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (11:45):
Yes, so it kind of re hydrates better?
Speaker 1 (11:50):
Thank you? What's in this makeup by Mario? Tim?
Speaker 2 (11:53):
Here? This is my go to ie shodow palette. I
think it's like the perfect tones and shows.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Do you know what that one's called? Is it on
the back?
Speaker 2 (12:03):
The fialized?
Speaker 1 (12:04):
Okay? Because makeup by Mario is so famous for those
neutral palettes, right, yes, what is the difference here? We've got?
Speaker 2 (12:10):
So this has like a few mat shadows and then
some shimmerys. But this is like extra gorgeous. Are there
any shades that you use more than others? These ones?
The shimmers stunning, But then you use the mats to
just like create a bit of contour in the eyes.
But honestly, when you use the shimmers, it just makes
your eyes. Yeah. I love a shimmer as well.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
All right, lips.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
Lips Okay, so these two shades, these are the hood
of lip contour, but these are the two point zero,
So she came out with her first lip contour. But
these are just amazing, so they like wind up and
they also like stay forever.
Speaker 1 (12:49):
Did you try the first version? I did? What's the fence?
Speaker 2 (12:52):
I'd say that these just last so much longer, okay?
And also good colors. This one is warm brown.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
You've gotten two.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
Colors, I do.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
Do you use them at the same time?
Speaker 2 (13:03):
No? No, nokay? And then deep rose so this is
more of like a cooler tone than a tone as well.
And then she also has the matching lip glosses and
they're colored so fau filler. Yes, they're my favorite. They
just make your lips pop.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
What you makeup hacks? All right? Talk to me about
your makeup hacks.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
So lip conjuring obviously it's one of them. And then
also cream under powder, So if you do like cream blush,
like if I just use a cream, I feel like
it disappears throughout the day. Yes, But then if I
said it with like a colored blush on top, it's
like the color just stays the pigments there all day.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
What's one of your favors?
Speaker 2 (14:00):
I love fenty Beauty strawberry drip, So that's a cream
and then I usually use benefits Shelley. But it's like
a beautiful, really right pink. Ye.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
I love that you like a pink blush?
Speaker 2 (14:12):
Yes, yep.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
How would you when you're working on clients, how would
you help them find like the right blush color for them?
Because not everyone will be a pink. Some people will
be a peach.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
Oh, I guess someone just match their skin tone, okay.
And I think it also matters what other colors you've
used on the face. So if you've used like warm
tones on the eyes, like you probably could get away
with getting more warm tones on the cheeks if you
keep the whole face the same tone like warm, or
if you're going cool, stick with everything cool.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
Yeah, it's like why a really dark red goes really
good with blue by shadow because they offset each other,
but they're still cool tones.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
Thank you so much for joining us on in her Bag.
This was so fun.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
