For today's Tried & Tested, Sarah Marie Fahd and Liv James get their hands dirty with two viral beauty hacks that have been doing the rounds on TikTok. Makeup novice Liv (who admits she gets "a bit sweaty" at the thought of applying eyeshadow) bravely tackles the cotton pad eyeshadow hack in front of professional makeup artist Sarah Marie. Watch as she strategically folds a regular cotton pad to create what promises to be the perfect winged shadow guide - a technique Sarah Marie surprisingly reveals she's secretly used on clients for over 15 years.

Meanwhile, Sarah Marie experiments with a TikTok-trending white concealer technique that's giving major 2016 vibes, where she applies stark white product under her eyes before layering foundation on top - a complete reversal of traditional makeup application order. Does this unusual method deliver that bright-eyed, bushy-tailed look we're all desperately chasing, or is it just another social media fantasy?

Tune in to discover which technique earns holy grail status and which one gets relegated to the beauty bin!

Speaker 1 (00:10):
You're listening to a MoMA Mia podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Mama Mia acknowledges the traditional owners of land and waters
that this podcast is recorded.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
On Makeup is My Therapy. I'm obsessed and I don't
even feel guilty a body.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Hello, and welcome to you Beauty the Daily Podcast for
your Faith.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
I am Theerramary Bart and I am Live James. And
you're listening to Tried and Tested, where we try out
all the hacks, all the treatments, and all the different
kind of products so you don't have to unless they're
actually worth it. Yes, Okay, So I've got a hack
today that I'm going to do in studio. Now, we
know that hacks don't always work. I've had a few blunders,

(00:53):
I would say, And this one's interesting because it's an
eyeshadow hack and I don't actually wear eyeshadow that much.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Ye. This makes me excited to see you do this
because you're like, I don't wear eyeshadow, but I'm.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Doing I shadow in the studio today, like this is
gonna be great.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
And I was like, anyway, really, oh my god, Oh
you're going to be like crying trying to put this
cotton mat on.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
I was like, on the way here, and I was like,
I'm about to do this hack in front of Sarah
Marie who was a literal professional, and then you got
to have to keep it together like that. I'm like,
I was freaking me out. I was like getting also
getting a bit sweaty thinking about it. I was like,
hold on, what's going on? But this hack is meant
to be for beginners, right, perfect, it's done by well,

(01:35):
I saw it by a creator called Makeup by Asta,
testing testing one to three, did it work? So this
hack is an eye shadow hack where you use a
face cotton patch, yes, your normal eyeshadow, and then an
eye shadow brush obasically to get a perfect kind of

(01:58):
winged look.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
I'm curious how you're going to do this because this
is actually a technique I used to use on my clients.
Really something along what you're explaining.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Yeah, okay, okay, interesting, but I would do it instead
of tape the makeup was finished, Okay, So I originally
came around because I didn want the eye shadow to
fall in the face, yes, and so I would fold
the cotton pad underneath the corner of the eye and
then do the eye makeup. Well, that's exactly what I'm
gonna do. Okay, I'm so excited what I'm doing, and
everyone on TikTok was freaking out. Really just so smart,

(02:30):
Like I have cotton pads all the time. It's better
than sticking tape to my face and like ripping my
makeup off. Yeah, which is correct, that's great. Yeah, I'm
so excited. Okay, Well it will be another question on
whether I can.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
Yeah, we're doing it on yourself is different, yes, doing
it on someone else, And this will be.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Very This will actually be quite interesting. So what you're
gonna do is you're gonna take your cotton pad. So
I've got this cotton pad here, right, normal cotton pad,
not anything special, and you're gonna get your eye shadow.
I've got this new Morphy palette which is beautiful and
it's got kind of like a gold bronze vibe, do
you know what I mean? It's beautiful right for face

(03:04):
or for eyes or what is that? So it's like
a full like kind of multi purpose product. Because I
don't use eyeshadow a lot, I'm gonna use a lighter color.
Like I'm not gonna go too intense because I find
that when I have had people do my eyeshadow, I
freak out because I'm like, that's way too much, or
it's too dark, or I'm not used to that. So

(03:25):
if you're a beginner like me, I'm gonna start with
something that's quite like, you know, it's not too crazy.
Love this, and if something happens, I'm not gonna look
like a crazy person for the rest of this regard.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
I love everything you're doing because that's so true. You're
not going to make up person. Yeah, like eyeshadow, normally
this is a beginner thing.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
Use the lighter color. Oh my god, I'm excited. You
proud of me. I am so proud.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
I'm proud of myself too. So what you're gonna do,
You're gonna get your little cotton pad and then you're
just gonna fold it in half. Right, this is exactly
what you told me. And I already have bronzer on
my eyes. I have the rare beauty bronzer. I do
that every day. Just adds a bit of depth when
you don't want to get too crazy with a product.
And then I'm going to put this shade down the

(04:06):
bottom bottom shade of the sunset, Yeah, which doesn't have
an individual name. Which I feel like that's a bit
of a miss on them because I love naming things
and that could have been fun, but we won't look
into that. Well, let's call her mocker.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Yeah, that's nice, the mocker shade it.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
That's nice. Okay, So I'm gonna dab into that, right,
So Sara Maary is holding the mirror, dab a little
brush over my laptop that can get the residue. I'm
folding the cotton pad in half again. I'm putting it
on my left eye. I'm going to place it under
just right at the ends of my eyelashes up to
the top of my eyebrow.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Like they're outer, like the last end of your eyebrow.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
Yeah, the last end where you'd usually want your like, yeah,
like eye to lift to right. And then we're gonna
go in. We're just gonna go around eye shadow on
my brush, using the cotton pad to kind of just
it'll naturally stop your eye shadow. So it's like a
it's like a stopper, right, It's like you're using it

(05:05):
like you would where people put tape to shape where
you want your eye shadow to land, and it kind
of catches all the like the fallout fallout. Okay, so
we've done the light color that we did on the
other eye, I'm gonna pull that away.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
You've added a little more, so it's just a little stronger,
but it's definitely I think it's definitely given you a
good guide, like it's worked in that aspect.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
Yeah, so you can see how it's just created a
nice little guide to make sure that you're making a
really nice cat eye shape. M hmmm, we're gonna go
in with a darker color.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Look, you said that with the shakiest voice ever.

Speaker 1 (05:39):
Do you have a smaller eye shadow branch?

Speaker 2 (05:41):
Or? Is that I do?

Speaker 1 (05:42):
I would probably go smaller. Okay, we're gonna go smaller.
Maybe I don't know. Oh yeah, there you go. Yeah,
he used that one. She's like, I'm nailing this.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
When you're using like let's say you're doing eyeshadow. The
reason why it's nice to add more than like one
shades if you're doing eye shadow is because your initial shade,
you've got your your base, like a foundational concealer. Okay,
you usually have like a light translucent powder or a
powder on there just to make it as a base,
everything blends easier.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
Then like let's say what you did today, bronze on
your eyelid. That's great for like, you know, let's just
say from the socket up a little bit of color.
It makes everything kind of flow nicer. Then you're adding
a darker shade, doesn't have to be too much darker,
but then that starts to give your eye shade like
a three D look and depth because if you think

(06:34):
of it this way, like I used to say this
all the time, So God is taking me back. But
if you're going over the desert, you see the ripples
in the sand, Yes, so the darker shades, you know,
create that shadow, Whereas if you're going over snow, it
looks flat because the light's reflecting. That's why, like the
highlighter is like bright, and then contour and darker shades
bring everything in, so it kind of makes everything have

(06:55):
a little bit more of like that.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
Three day Yeah, you look alive, it's not just flat. Yes,
that makes sense. Absolutely. Yeah, that's actually an incredible explanation.
That's like I'm going to take that with me for
the rest of my life. Fuck you, thank you.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
Yeah, I don't even remember who told me this a
long time ago.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
Yeah, and then it just stuck it doesn't. It makes sense, right,
it makes so much sense. Your face isn't flat. And
that's what happens when you just put foundation on. Like
when I was like in year age, I would think
I just needed.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
Foundation, yeah, and I go, wow, we had no cheek.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
We've all been there, worry. Wow, that's interesting. And then
that's why you get into the blush, and that's why
you get into the bronze and all that kind of stuff.
And that's where I stopped. But look, I'm going into
a bit more of a discovery phase right.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
The second Well, this is nice for when you're going out,
let's say nighttime. Your day makeup's not gonna so true
to get a makeup when you're going in the evening
because you're not gonna see it. Like you lose like
sixty percent of your makeup at night.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
That's true. Actually, just go for gold. Yeah. I'm always
the friend that's like to my best friend, come and
do my eye shadow. Oh yeah, because she knows how
to do it. Yeah, and I've just never learned.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
I'll have my neighbor come over and be like, hey, Bebe,
can you just put my lashes on?

Speaker 1 (08:03):
Yeah? Like you do that? Yeah, yeah, yeah, my whole face. Yeah,
I'm like, of.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
Course, do you have a spare hour, because if you do,
I've got a task for you.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
Need some cotton pads, So we're going to move into
going a little bit darker. I've gotten a new cotton
pad just because whatever, like that one's dirty. Now you
don't have to do that. You absolutely do not have
to do that. I'm going to place it where I
had it before. We're going to do the left eye again.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
Well, this girl in this video uses it also for
like the creed.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
She does, and I'm going to get to that like
after this.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
Yeah. I just opened up the video and I'm like,
that's intriguing.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
I think for.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Someone if you guys, anyone listening, if you're a beginner
or watching, actually this is probably better if you're watching
it on our YouTube channel, So hop on there. If
you're watching this now, this is perfect if you're a beginner.
And the amount of people I know, even my age
and older, who still don't know how to use eye shadow. Yeah,
I know this is like a tried and tester, but

(09:08):
I think we've both agreed this is this is this.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
Is a nail.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
So I feel like, just watch this now for the
rest of the Yeah, it.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
Actually is really good. And then I'm gonna just darken
it up what I've got. I've come in with a
darker shade, but I am a bit afraid I've put
my brush in it, so I've just like taken to
my hand and taken a bit of the stuff off
because I'm still scared. It's a good tip. Always tap
that shadow on the back of your hand. Yeah, so
you don't have too much of an intense color. We're
gonna do exactly what we did before. Fold the cotton
pad in half, put it up to your eye, and

(09:36):
then we're gonna go in and just hope for the best.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
The darker shadow start where your lush line is.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
Okay, okay there, yeah, yeah, yeah, okay.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Always start like closer to the lash line, because if
you start too high up, then it's too dark and
then you can't blend that enough. For as, if you
go darker right at the lash line, you can blend
it out.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
Okay, and then I pull it away. Does that? Look
at you?

Speaker 2 (09:59):
Look at you?

Speaker 1 (10:00):
God, it's working. Shut up, it's working, it's working. Shut up.
Shut How excited you want? What is more excited? Have
you've ever been able to do this ever.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
That's actually this is the biggest now we've.

Speaker 1 (10:14):
Had and it's not actually too intense, Like I can
probably do this during the day, right, like, no, no, no,
you could do that during the day one percent. Yeah, Yeah,
don't be scared. It's neutral browns.

Speaker 2 (10:27):
It's neutral browns, guys, very very good colors.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
You're not freak out. I don't worry about it.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
I'm pretty sure I've got more in my eyes right now,
so don't worry about it.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
Well, I'm the wrong person to ask. No, no, no, that's
still great for you for day, day to night with this, Yeah, absolutely,
because I think, like I get very scared because I'm like,
oh my gosh, it's everyone's going to look at me
and be like weary.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
No, And I think you've got such lovely eyelashes that
like you wouldn't even need eyeliner. You can like put
extra mascara on with this side shadow and that could
be your beginner like slam makeup and it will look
really nice.

Speaker 1 (10:58):
Oh my gosh, I'm actually very excited about this. If
you do that with mascara, shut up, look at you.
You're so glam No way, oh my gosh, Yeah, we go.
That's a total nail. You're glowing one hundred percent of nail.
And it's something that you already did, right, I.

Speaker 2 (11:18):
Had been doing it for over fifteen years.

Speaker 1 (11:20):
It actually works.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
When you said, oh, the cotton pad thing, I was like,
no way.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
So with this hack, my eye basically just looks lifted
without a strong wing. I would say, so the eyeshadow
has been shaped into that kind of I guess, like.

Speaker 2 (11:35):
A lifted almonds.

Speaker 1 (11:35):
Yeah, a lifted almond. And it's made sure that none
of the actual product has dropped, and it's given me
a nice soft Yeah, it's like a nice guy.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
So it's just where it's meant to go and it's
not drooping down.

Speaker 1 (11:47):
Yeah, yeah, for sure. And it's just I actually didn't
have to think that much at all. I just put
it there, just got the brush. I didn't even really
put the brush like. I was just like boom, And
then you lift it away and it looks perfect.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
I think it looks great. I think it's really good too.
Let's say it's the end of the day and you
don't want to redo your makeup, but you're going somewhere. Yeah,
and you've already got found and stuff on to put
it on underneath and then avoid the fallout and your makeup.

Speaker 1 (12:15):
It is really useful for really fall out because you
can see how like I compad. Yeah, I've taken the
cotton pad away and you can see the line of
product that it stopped from falling onto your face, which
is proof that it works.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
Yeah, it's great, that's good. It's one hundred percent of nail. Okay,
So my tried or test it today is this white concealer.
It's a white preke concealer a lot. This is a
video I saw on TikTok. The TikTok name is young Catore.

(12:50):
I'm pretty sure that's her name. So what she does
is gets this white concealera applies it underneath the eyes
and like where you want to brighten the face, and
then does her makeup with it. She saw it in
someone else's TikTok, so she's attempting on her TikTok and
now I'm attempting it here on tried and test it,
so you know, it is just the bucle of the

(13:12):
circle of life butterfly effect of concilas.

Speaker 1 (13:14):
Really, I wasn't sure if it's gonna work.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
Or not. I did it literally an hour before I
got here.

Speaker 1 (13:21):
Today, because well, your makeup looks great.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
I mean, i'll explain everything we'll go through. Does it
look great?

Speaker 1 (13:29):
Is it this conciller?

Speaker 2 (13:29):
Is it not?

Speaker 1 (13:30):
But thank you?

Speaker 2 (13:31):
Thank you ahead of it. Thank you. So the idea
with this, I don't know if you've seen this video yet,
but I'll just quickly.

Speaker 1 (13:37):
Show you her video. I haven't seen this yet.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
And I mean we can put this up as well.
I'm pretty sure.

Speaker 1 (13:42):
Gosh, so she's like going pretty twenty.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
Yeah, yeah, like at it's not a light placement.

Speaker 1 (13:48):
No, she's really going for it. The white is on
the white is on her eyes. The whole half of
her face is pretty much was pretty much white, and
I think maybe she put too much product there, but yeah,
it's so white.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
Interesting and then that's her makeup like finished. Okay, so
it's meant to.

Speaker 1 (14:06):
Be like brightened up under the eye and it's a
full glamor look. I would say, right.

Speaker 2 (14:11):
I mean she does her makeup as a full I
don't think you necessarily have to.

Speaker 1 (14:15):
So I attempted this. Yeah, okay, all right.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
I thought it's an interesting one. I think that conciller
generally speaking like that brand. I've seen around in colors
like normal colors, never in a white, ok. You know,
I've seen people use them before, so I have to
say texture wise, it was a nice concealer. So this
is it here. Actually it says pro Conceal HD High
Definition concealer. The color is actually called highlighter. It's not

(14:41):
called white. So obviously the way you're going to design
to use this is to highlight the area. And texture
was really good. But here, if you wanted to have
a little bit tribe it, yeah, go for it.

Speaker 1 (14:50):
And it's got a little brush at the top.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
It does have a brush when you're applying it. Yeah,
I still kind of put it on my hands, squeezed
it on my hand and then.

Speaker 1 (14:56):
Wiped it with a brush.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
But you know, you can just use it directly onto
the face.

Speaker 1 (14:59):
This is like paint. This is crazy. She's thick, but
not as thick as my concealer at home. Actually still
I use it of beauty.

Speaker 2 (15:11):
So you know it's never gonna be as thick as.

Speaker 1 (15:12):
That's so true. That actually is true. Oh, it actually
goes on quite light like in the end.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
Yeah. Yeah, it's actually very comfortable in the face. I
have to give it that it is a comfortable concealer. So,
just generally speaking as a brand, I think you know
you want the colors or to try something else.

Speaker 1 (15:27):
It's actually not bad. This probably for like stage makeup,
do you think.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
I don't necessarily think so. I think it depends how
you're gonna use it. Stage makeup is much thicker. Yeah, okay,
so I think like, I mean, you could, but it
is thicker but layering.

Speaker 1 (15:41):
I think it'll be a good one. Yeah. So putting
it on.

Speaker 2 (15:43):
Myself today, I was like, I hope this works because
let me tell you, I have to wear this makeup here.

Speaker 1 (15:49):
Yes, I did not have time. You kind of look
like Kylie Jenner there.

Speaker 2 (15:52):
Oh, I thank you. I'll take the compliment because she's
so young. So I'm putting the concealer inner corners of
my eyes right underneath the whole length of my eye
and up on the outer corners as if I'm literally
highlighting that whole section. Yes, being quite generous with it,
because she was quite generous with the highlighter.

Speaker 1 (16:11):
You look like kind of like a swan. Like it's because.

Speaker 2 (16:15):
That's what I was going for, right, you look like
a bird.

Speaker 1 (16:20):
It's giving Halloween right now because it's so wide. It is,
it's a lot.

Speaker 2 (16:25):
It is for those who not watching on YouTube. It
it's a very white white concealer and then I've blended
that in. It does brighten the area. I have to
say it does, so if you want it bright fine.
So now what I'm going to do is I'm going
to do the foundation over this Chinceala, which is exactly
what she does.

Speaker 1 (16:44):
That's a Charlotte Tilbury.

Speaker 2 (16:46):
But I think you can use any I wouldn't be
using light coverage here. Okay, this is you're not going
to be doing this if you are wearing minimal make
and do you think Matt no, no, any Yeah, it
depends on your skin. Yeah, this one is like in between.
I could have used my mat. I don't think it
really matters. Just any foundation that you've got. I started
on the cheeks and then apply like I patted it

(17:07):
on where the white highlighter can con is.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
And you are going over the concealer, aren't you I.

Speaker 2 (17:12):
Am, Yeah, you're going over the concealer. So the idea
is that when the whole base is on, it brightens
under there without like you having to do much.

Speaker 1 (17:23):
Kind of like underpainting, isn't it. Yeah, it is actually so.
Kendall Jenner's makeup artist, Mary Phillips is really famous for that.
So she'll underpaint with like bronzer and stuff. But this
is like pretty much the opposite. You're doing it with
the highlight.

Speaker 2 (17:36):
Yes, I usually do everything on the top because I
use less. Yeah, I was surprised about how it looks.
I decided, yes, this is interesting.

Speaker 1 (17:45):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (17:46):
I decided on one eye, I'm going to show you
what it was like with my regular hood a beauty
concealer on.

Speaker 1 (17:52):
Okay, amazing, versus with like without with just the white.

Speaker 2 (17:56):
Okay, Now, when you do look at the eyes, the
one that I used my just whatever skin tone matches me,
full coverage concealer, I felt like I looked less tired.
So even though the white conciller is brighter, when I
used my regular conceiler on top of my foundation, which
is what I would normally do, not the other way around, I.

Speaker 1 (18:17):
Looked fresher and I used way less product.

Speaker 2 (18:19):
Like I'm going to show you here, now see how
I've got that under eye, and then it's way fresher
on the other eye.

Speaker 1 (18:27):
You do, So I was like I'm not going to.

Speaker 2 (18:31):
Leave the house without the regular conceal on top, like
I can't. Like, once you see it like that, I'm like,
there's no way, so I'm going to just go back
over it. I have to say in regards to like
doing this again in that way, I would never do
it again, Okay, like I wouldn't.

Speaker 1 (18:46):
It's just a waste of time.

Speaker 2 (18:47):
And but it layers so well under like I've worn
it today, Like that's laid so.
