Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's bring in our national correspondent, Rory O'Neil, who supports
brought to you by Mark Spain Real Estate. So Hurricane Melissa, Rory,
this thing has become a monster Category five one hundred
and sixty miles per hour winds. It's barely moving.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Well, that's the real story on this one, about three
miles per hour. And that's the issue that it's just
going to sit on top of Jamaica, even parts of
Hispaniola and eastern Cuba as well. So we're concerned about
our service members deployed to Guantanamo Bay. They are in
the thick of this right now. But this storm could
dump up to thirty inches of rain on parts of

(00:36):
Jamaica and just sit there, making it difficult to recover,
you know, likely taking out most of the power grid
on the island, other utilities. They were rushing, i know,
to try to clear out gullies, which often are used
as dumpsters sadly, and you know when they get calogged,
that means the flood waters can't recede. So that's been

(00:57):
one of the frantic moves by US engineers there.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
Yeah, and you've got some of the geography that leads
to concerns over landslides and stuff like that, and the
storm has been kind of strange. It was nothing for
a while, it took a long time to develop, and
then in the blink of an eye, it's a Category five.
And this is the third Category five of the season.

(01:21):
Only one of their season has had more those back
in two thousand and five when they were four. And
it just this continues a pattern that we've been seeing
where these storms they intensify so quickly and they become
so strong, and unfortunately Jamaica is going to face the
brunt of the storm now well.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Right, And the hurricane forecasters will tell you they're getting
pretty good at doing the tracks and narrowing that cone
of uncertainty that we see all the time, but their
ability to forecast the intensification, the rapid intensification in particular,
that still needs a lot of work.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
It's getting better.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
You know, they were predicting that Melissa would ramp up
to a Cat five. But that's why they always put
a lot of these warnings out there saying, look, you know,
we don't know what's going to happen to this thing.
You may think it's a two, but suddenly hits you
is a four in this case, though they were pretty
confident this was going to intensify the way it has
again one hundred and sixty miles per hour sustained winds

(02:17):
with dust likely going much higher.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
Yeah, and Kingston is on the bad side of the
storm that northeast quadrants. I think some of the images
we're going to see out of Jamaica are going to
be quite devastating. And it's also been it's been an
odd hurricane season in the sense that you know, this
one once, once it moves past Jamaica and then over
parts of Cuba, it's going to go out into the

(02:39):
Atlantic Ocean, not make landfall with the East coast and
certainly not the state of Florida, thank god. But this
has been a pattern the whole hurricane It's on that
same kind yeah, sharp right turn, Yeah, yeah, I was
reading over the weekend. There is a meteorological reason for that,

(03:00):
quite understand it.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
I don't know, we haven't seen we haven't seen development
in the Gulf of America or Downdoor, the Yucatan, that
kind of thing, which we also typically see more activity
this time of year in that part of the world
as well. And you know, look, we still got what
a month of this to go plus, so we're not
out of the woods.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
I do find it interesting that since it was renamed
the Gulf of America, no storms have come through Togeah there.
We haven't been any storms in the Gulf of America. Yeah. Interesting,
I'm going to throw that out there. We're joined by
our national correspondent Rory O'Neil. Let's talk about the government shutdown.
We're now in day twenty seven and we're seeing some

(03:45):
more flight delays and tomorrow is the first mispayday for
air traffic controllers, so I'm assuming it's not going to
get better in terms of delays and ground stops and
things like that.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
Right even this weekend we saw disruptions at a temporary
closure at LAX. I mean it's a big one, significant,
but yeah, we're also looking at that program, the WICK
I'm sorry, the SNAP program. Also running out of benefit
money that would be food stamps November first, and whether
or not money can somehow be found for that. The

(04:16):
administration has already said they're not going to tap into
eight billion dollars in reserves that they have to help
fund the WIG program. And then we're back into that
cycle too, of trying to find a way to pay
the military, since that temporary money move isn't quite sufficient
to make payrolls.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
So there's still a lot.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Going on the president though. On the other side of
the planet, House members scattered to their districts. Only the
Senate is air quotes here working unquote and doesn't look
like this thing is well, nothing will interrupt this thing
being becoming the longest shutdown in history.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
Yeah, those snap benefits don't go out. It's going to
impact about three million people here in Florida, so that's
a significant number. And then I guess there's some confusion
over whether or not this billionaire who originally anonymously donated
one hundred and thirty million dollars to pay our service members,
but then you know his name was revealed by the

(05:11):
New York Times over the weekend, Timothy Mellon, whether or
not the Pentagon's actually going to be able to use
that money without congressional approval to pay the right service members.
So he's an eighty three year old heir to the
Mellon banking fortune.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
Yeah, not a billionaire, he says, by the way, but
certainly close enough. I think the.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
Family can't afford to donate one hundred and thirty million dollars. Yeah, yeah,
I think the family has like billions of dollars.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
But yeah, he also I think he donated fifty million
dollars to the Trump campaign, So yeah, yeah, clearly he's
willing to write the check when necessary, but it does
raise some legal questions.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
I need somebody like that in my life, I know, right,
write those kinds of checks. Our national correspondent Rory O'Neill
with us this morning. Rory really appreciated, Thanks so much,
Thanks Ryan. President Trump over in Asia on a big trip,
and the big news over the weekend, Treasury Secretary Scott
Bessen announced the US and China have reached a framework

(06:12):
trade deal. So there's a lot that we still don't
know about this. Let's bring in our White House correspondent
John Decker for more. So, John, have you learned anything
new about what exactly this framework trade deal with China entails?

Speaker 4 (06:28):
We know what they discussed, we don't know what the
framework actually will consist of, and it all needs to
get the sign off of President Trump. But it lays
the groundwork for the meeting that will take place on
Thursday in South Korea between President Trump and President She.
The President has already agreed to meet with President She
in addition to this time coming up this week later

(06:51):
in just a few months, actually in the early part
of twenty twenty six. And President She for his part,
has agreed to come to the United States, the President
saying either in Washington or at mar A Lago. But
we know that there will be some elements of this
deal that the President spoke of involving TikTok, finalizing that
deal as it relates to the sale of TikTok to

(07:12):
a US backed entity. In addition to that, an agreement
the President and his team have reached as it relates
to agricultural areas, including soybeans. That's something that the Chinese
have essentially boycotted and that's really hurt our farmers in
the Midwest.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
What about this issue with Canada, President Trump announced to
ten percent terrified on Canadian goods Saturday. So now Canada
back in the crossair is when it comes to trade.

Speaker 4 (07:42):
Yeah, that's right. And the President indicating just a few
hours ago on the flight from Malaysia to Japan that
he does not intend to meet or talk with the
Canadian Prime Minister anytime soon. So pretty remarkable, And just
the span of three weeks time. The relationship between the
United States and Canada, which seemed to be on the

(08:04):
upswing just a few weeks ago when the Canadian Prime
Minister met with the President in the Oval Office, now
non existent. So some work to do in terms of
patching up that relationship, that trade relationship in particular, all
trade talks between the US and Canada are, according to
the President, are now off real quick.

Speaker 1 (08:24):
You've gotten this Supreme Court case about these tariffs coming up,
and I just wonder, you know, one of the arguments
the administration is trying to make is that these tariffs
are for national security reasons and stuff like that. But
when you have an instance where it's an ad that
Ontario was putting out that's the reason for a ten

(08:48):
percent tariff hike, as the President has said, can that
be used in court against the Trump administration?

Speaker 4 (08:55):
Not only can it be using court. It's a very
excellent question. Ran you always have good questions with that,
I think a great question, And you know that's the
question that a justice may indeed ask the Solicitor General,
who will be representing the Trump administration, why have you
put additional tariffs on Canada? And you just explained the
reason why, and that does not fall under that nineteen

(09:15):
seventy seven law that the Trump administration has used as
justification for these tariffs. That's why it's problematic when the
president imposes those types of additional tariffs on countries. The
same thing can also apply to Brazil, and justice may
certainly ask the question, why have you imposed fifty percent
tariffs on Brazil? And that has to do with the

(09:37):
fact that the president is not a happy person as
it relates to the way Bolsonaro has been treated by
the justice system in Brazil. So you know, that's fair
game for justices to ask during oral arguments which take
place on November fifth at the Supreme Court.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
All right, our White House correspondent John Decker with us
this morning. John, thanks so much, appreciate it. Thank you,
and forg you can check out John Decker's White House
Briefing Room podcast on iHeartRadio for more. I think we
should just leave it up to the World Series determine
who wins the trade war with Canada, and I feel
like we have a really good chance of winning that
with the LA Dodgers. You get the Dodgers playing the

(10:15):
Toronto Blue Jays and the World series series is tied
one to one, and I just say, yeah, whoever wins, Yeah,
whoever wins tariff On get their way on everything. Yeah,
just just do it that way. I think we could
solve it there. And we could also who gets custody
of Katy Perry because now apparently she's with Justin Trudeau. Yeah,

(10:35):
so do we just give her to Canada if if well,
I don't know, will we give her to Canada if
we win, or we give her to Canada Canada Toronto wins. Yeah.
Right now, we start with today's top stories and Natalie Rodriguez,
Good morning, Natalie.

Speaker 3 (10:51):
Good morning.

Speaker 5 (10:51):
Will the US is sending its largest aircraft carry to
the Caribbeans strikes on alleged drug boats continue, Depentagon reported
Secretary of Warpete Hagseth ordered the USS Gerald four to
the Caribbean to help dismantle transnational criminal organizations and counter
narco terrorism in defense of the homeland. This comes as
the US carried out a strike on an alleged Agua

(11:14):
drug boat last week that killed all six people on board,
and the US have struck several suspected drug boats in
the Caribbean as well as the Pacific. Now, the DAVY
says that the carrier strike group will also include five
guided missile destroyers. Venezuela now stepping out and condemning what
it calls a military provocation from neighboring Trinidad and Tobago
coordinated by the CIA. The US and Trinny and Tobago

(11:37):
are currently carrying out joint military exercises.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
Venezuela says that the US.

Speaker 5 (11:41):
Plan is to carry out a false flag attack to
then provoke a full military confrontation.

Speaker 3 (11:47):
I feel like we're watching battleship here.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
Yeah, there's certainly a lot happening right off the coast
of Venezuela. I mean, when you send the USS Gerald R.
Ford over to that part of the world only sending
a very clear message. It's kind of like when you're
dating a woman and she leaves feminine hygiene products in

(12:12):
your Bathroom's what it's sending a message. It's sending a
message that you are now in a relationship. Yes, yes,
it's strategic positioning. It's strong messaging. Uh, that's what we
have going on here, Kim.

Speaker 3 (12:28):
You're comparing a relationship with war.

Speaker 1 (12:31):
Yes, yes, I'm trying to put it in terms that
everyone can very much understand. So that's that's what's happening here.
All's fair in love and war. Yes, right, exactly, all right?
What else is going on this morning, Natalie?

Speaker 5 (12:43):
Multiple threats against schools leading to arrest. There was a
student at Ferguson Senior High School in southwest Miami Dade
who was arrested recently, accused of bringing a weapon to campus.
Snoword on the type of weapon. Then in Broward County,
a thirteen year old was accused of making threat of
a school shooting at the Renaissance Charter School implantation. That

(13:04):
threat went viral on social media, so that child is
now set to face serious, serious charges that will probably
stay on their record for a long time coming.

Speaker 1 (13:15):
Yeah, the thirteen year old student who made the threats,
they were posted on social media. Parents alerted the school
safety officer, who then notified the authorities, and then the
student who was found with a gun on campus. There
were no threats made there, but there was a report
that was submitted through four to five Florida that anonymous

(13:35):
safety app and that allowed investigators to respond really quickly. Now,
there were some students who I guess told reporters that
the student who was arrested might have been planning to
start a fight at lunch and had a list of names.
But you know, there wasn't confirmation of all of that.
You know, just last week we mentioned a report that

(13:57):
showed almost fifteen hundred ways weapons were found on Florida
school property, buses, or at school events last year, including
one hundred and forty one firearms. So this is, you know,
a notable problem. Hillsboro County he had the most in
the state, fourteen guns received last year. And we also

(14:17):
talked about how Panellas County looking to incorporate an AI
enabled weapons detection system to help detect these weapons before
they end up on campus. It's something that some other
counties in the state have done. But even that isn't
necessarily foolproof. There was a high school student in Baltimore County, Maryland,

(14:43):
who was handcuffed after an AI security system wrongly flagged
his bag of Dorito's as a gun. Oh my gosh. Yeah,
so how does that happen? Well, yeah, AI not not
perfect yet, so you've got that issue. But so generally,
it seems like those AI detection systems are helping, or

(15:05):
at least you know, the fact that they're there and
it's known that they're there could be a bit of
a turn. So yeah. And then also there was a
crazy story in South Florida from Friday morning. You had
an eleven year old girl hit by a City of
Miami ambulance.

Speaker 3 (15:19):
Oh that was horrible.

Speaker 1 (15:20):
Yeah, near her school. It was heading to the hospital
with another patient, right, and you know, had all the
lights and sirens going with a girl step between cars,
stopped in traffic and jaywalking. Yeah, just an accident and
they had to then transport her and then you had
to shift the other patient. It was a whole thing.
So just you know, unfortunate situation there last week.

Speaker 3 (15:41):
Yes, it was.

Speaker 5 (15:42):
And what a situation on the gridiron this weekend the
Dolphins blowing out the Falcons thirty four.

Speaker 3 (15:48):
To ten from Atlanta.

Speaker 5 (15:50):
And overheard at the coffee machine this morning that two
a tounguel VII Lawa should have eye infections more often.
He says, he woke up with one eye swollen shut
and played better than he was healthy.

Speaker 6 (16:01):
Probably one of the worst experiences I've had in terms
of waking up and that happens on a game day, right.

Speaker 5 (16:07):
He tossed four touchdowns with the team snapping a three
game skid. Vinn's head coach Mike McDaniel, has been on
the hot seat lately, says it was one of the
best games they've played.

Speaker 1 (16:16):
Well, it's up there for sure.

Speaker 6 (16:18):
I think you know, the opening drive was three and out,
and to get a stop and then to have clean
execution on special teams.

Speaker 3 (16:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (16:35):
Elsewhere, we've got the Bucks who crushed the Saints twenty
three to three from New Orleans. Anthony Nelson picked six,
winning three of their last four games. Sean Tucker killed it,
rushing for forty two yards Tampa Bay's only offensive touchdown.
Nelson led the way defensively, recording two sacks. He returned
an interception for a TD. Then the Bucks got back

(16:56):
in the win column, improving a six and two on
the season. The Saints, well, they've lost three consecutive games.
They fall to one and seven on the year. And
then we've got the Patriots who are coming to Tampa Sunday,
November ninth, which seems so far away, But then I
looked at the calendar.

Speaker 3 (17:09):
I'm like Oh my gosh, November is right around the corner.

Speaker 1 (17:11):
Yeah, the Bucks are on a by this coming week.
You've got the Dolphins. They've got a quick turnaround. They're
playing the Ravens Thursday nights. And yeah, Lamar Jackson should
be back for that one. But it was a big
game for four touchdowns no picks after he had six
over the past two weeks. Yeah, yeah, I mean again,
maybe put an eyepatch on for the next game, even
if your eyes healthy, and go about it that way,

(17:33):
right right, So, good win for the Dolphins, good win
for the Box. They've got a two game lead in
the division, and we'll have more on those games throughout
the morning when we actually Natalie, Thanks so much, Natalie Rodriguez.
Day's top stories.
