Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good morning. I'm Susie nord Quitst and this is your
midday news fix for Tuesday, the third of September. The
Transport Minister says the government's move to spend less on
footpaths and cycle ways and more on potholes and state
highways rebalance its priorities. Simeon Brown says, this is what
people expect.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
I think New Zealand is a second tired of seeing
how much money has been going into cycle ways in
recent years. Speed bumps of the set have been infesting
our streets while potholes haven't been filled.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Meanwhile, the Finance Minister has a simple message for anyone
who doesn't like their rates bill, as a new IID
report shows council rates are almost double the OECD average.
Nikola Willis told Mike Hosking the power is in people's hands.
If you don't like your rate, spill. If you're not
happy with the decision making your local council's doing, for

(00:53):
goodness sake, make sure you vote. Investigators have released new
details on what caused a flight to make an emergente
landing in Wellington on Sunday. The plane's engine appeared to
catch fire as smoke belowed from the aircraft did about
three hundred feet as it approached the runway. These talks
there Be's Max Toll says what was reported from the

(01:13):
cockpit low oil.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Pressure warning which was followed by an engine fault than
an engine fire warning, so that was what prompted the
emergency landing with smoke appearing from one of the engines.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
The Tourism Minister says a big increase in the tourist
tax wite meaningfully hurt arrivals. Matt Doocy has increased the
international visitor tourism levy from thirty five dollars a visitor
on entry to one hundred dollars from next month. Political
editor Jason Walls has more.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
Doocey says the tax increase would make up roughly three
percent of total visitor spending and is unlikely to have
a significant impact on visits numbers. He says it's expected
to raise between an extra one hundred and twenty seven
and one hundred and seventy three million dollars a year.
That money will go towards read infrastructure upkeep and maintenance.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
There are calls for more investment for graduates as confidence
hits a new low. Talent Solutions annual survey reveals only
nineteen percent of university students feel very confident about their
job Prospects Director Sarah Wilson says the government and industries
need to continue to invest in programs for young people

(02:22):
because if we don't, we will continue to lose our
young people across the Tasman and that will make our
business is less competitive. Toast is back on the menu
for new mums at Wellington Hospital after it was previously
cut for nutritional reasons. Midwiffrey Advisory Service co leader Caroline
Conroy says toast is actually a good option for a
quick meal to recharge a new mother's battery. Often they

(02:45):
like a hot drink and they just find a little
snack something to eat before they get up for a
shower and stuff like that.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
It's only a sort of in between food until the
next meal.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
Chris Warner and all round is Nathan Smith and Josh
Clarkson have secured New Zealand Cricket Central contracts for the
first time, taking over from Devon Conway and Fin Allen
on the twenty person list. Another New Zealand footballer has

in the T thirty six long jump at the Paris Paralympics.
He left five point seven to four meters with his
third attempt, leaving him in fourth place. I'm Susie Nordquist
