this update, Indonesian police say New Zealand pilot Philip Mertens
has been freed from captivity. The former Jetstar pilot had
been held captive by West Papur rebels since February twenty
twenty three after landing a small commercial plane on the island.

Indonesian police say Mertens was freed and picked up by
a joint team and is undergoing health checkups and a
physiological examination. The rebels had posted a list of demands
for his release earlier this week, including Indonesia's army suspending
operations and space for him to convey what he felt
while in captivity.

Foreign Minister Winston Peters has welcomed the release in a statement.
He says it's the result of nineteen and a half
months of work from a wide range of government agencies
and Indonesian authorities. Two people have been injured, one seriously,
in a two car crash in Wellington's Patani this afternoon.

Jackson and Nevers Street. The roads expected to be closed
