Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good morning, I'm never ready, Manu, and this is your
morning news fix for Tuesday, twenty ninth of October. In
this update, Unions of pleading with the government not to
switch up how it manages pay settlements. A Cabinet paper
states costs of all settlements to date at one point
five to five billion dollars a year, which has been
deemed significant. It reduces central decision making, puts more emphasis

(00:27):
on employers and employees, and comes after the disestablishment of
the Pay Equity Task Force. Council of Trade Union's Vice
president Rachel McIntosh says the settlements go towards paying people
so they can live lives of dignity. That monetary amount,
you just can't compare that with the cost to families
and communities and children in our future of underpaying people.

(00:49):
The labor weekend road toll period officially ended with no
debts on our roads. It better is the previous lowest
labor weekend in twenty thirteen, when one person died. It's
also a turnaround on recent long weekends, with six people
dying last year and seven dying over the latest Easter period.
The period started at four pm on Friday and finished

(01:10):
at six o'clock this morning. Changing consumer habits in a
tough economic environment could be behind an apparent decline in dairies.
Retail in Z believes he will be fewer dairies in
twenty twenty four than their previous count in twenty eighteen
of around four thousand. Communications Manager Anne Marie Johnson told
Ryan Bridge, Retail's been doing it tough and if we

(01:31):
want to keep our dairies open then we need to
support them. But certainly dairies are a real focal point
in the communities. Wellington City councilors will meet publicly for
the first time today since the government decided it would
appoint a Crown Observer. They've previously only met behind closed doors,
but this morning's Long Term Plan, Finance and Performance Committee

(01:52):
meeting is open to the public. The Corrections Union says
a lack of work Safe investigations illustrates a gap in
prisons safety accountability. Data released under the Official Information Act
shows work Safe were notified of one hundred and fifty
two incidents in the past decade, but have investigated just two.

(02:12):
There was a single conviction over the death of Robert Cave,
who was crushed by log during community work in Nelson
in twenty fourteen. The Directions Association's president, Floyd Dupliss says,
it's a concerning record for a volatile and violent workplace.
It's absolutely shocking and it certains me that the worth
in safety of staff is held so lowly that not
more is done to scrutinize and improve. A simplified passport

(02:36):
process looks to be helping New Zealanders reflect their identity.
Figures requested under the Official Information Act show nearly three
hundred people over the age of eighteen changed the gender
on their passport this year. There's been a one hundred
and eighty nine percent increase over the past decade. After
changes in twenty twelve, Transgender people only need to provide
a statutory declaration stating which gender they want displayed. And

(03:00):
In sport, Manchester United has sacked manager Eric ten Hark.
The move comes with the club sitting fourteenth in Football's
Premier League after nine games. Here is forward Jordan Rickey
has gifted his debut jersey to his granddad for filling
a boyhood promise, and former international Jody Brown claims the
Constellation Cup performances of Silver Fern's goal shoot gros In

(03:22):
wiki should have Netball New Zealand reconsidering the eligibility rules.
She's moving to Australia so can't play in twenty twenty
five and I'm never reaty Manu. That your latest news, folks.
We'll be back with the next update at midday from
