Good afternoon. I'm Malcolm Jordan and missus your midday news
FIKS for Monday, the seventeenth of February. A homicide investigation
is underway into a man's death and Hastings Courtney Winter reports.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
The investigation follows reports to police about ten thirty last
night of a group fighting on Kiwi Lane and a
man being dropped off at Hastings Hospital after an assault
who later died. Detective Inspector Martin James says they're working
to establish what happened and people can expect to see
an increased police presence.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
And police are asking for any witness reports. David Seymour
says his comments about teacher only days were an overlap,
not an overstep. Education Minister Ericus Stanford's told TV and
Z the Associate Education Minister overstepped the mark when he
said school should set a good example by not holding
teacher only days during term time.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
I'm the Minister of Education and when we are rolling
out a new curriculum, we have to have correct.

Days, Seymour says, or Todd Mike Hosking he was merely
highlighting the impact that the days have on attendance, which
is his responsibility. If you go back to what I
actually said, it was that the minister's in charge. I
just made the point that if you want to close,
you need to ask the Minister for education. Condemnation from

Destiny Church that disrupted Auckland Pride Festival events over the weekend.
Christopher Luxen and Chris Hipkins say people have a right
to protest, but these protesters went too far. The country
that values diversity and New Zealand is a much better

free speech, shouting other people down and stopping them doing

A Canterbury University study shows teaching, nursing, social work and
midwiffery are on the financial backfoot after years of study,
unpaid placements and university fees. Police and firefighters have a
shorter training period and trainees are paid. Lead author doctor
Layton Watson says these workers lag behind for years and

more than a police officer, about fifteen thousand dollars more.
