Speaker 1 (00:06):
Good morning. I'm never ready, Manu, and this is your
morning Newspeaks for Tuesday, fourth of March. In this update,
mounting pressure on Wellington Water over the value for money
it's delivering for ranked payers. Escathing reports found the agencies
been paying three times more to repair and install pipes
than other comparable councils. Its oversight group is holding an

(00:28):
emergency meeting at seven thirty this morning, and Wellington City
Councilors will meet at nine thirty. Local Government Minister Simon
Watts says it's primarily a matter for the agency and
its sheerholding counselors, but Christopher Luxen and Chris Hopkins are
both concerned about the situation. It's a total basket case.
We can be so much better and we must be
so much better than this. I'm very concerned to something

(00:50):
that Wellington Water should be getting to the bottom of,
very very quickly. The government was warned by officials and
legal groups that changes to name suppression could risk calming
victims an undermined confidence in the justice system as proposing
a change meaning courts could not issue permanent name suppression
for a convicted sexual offender unless the victim agreed concerns

(01:12):
were raised by Ministry of Justice, the Law Society and
Public Defense Services, which included putting victims under pressure. The
government's chief Victims adviser, Bruth Money has called the concerns
offensive and disempowering to victims, while Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith
says the power should be given to those most affected
by the crime firm. Opposition from the education sector over

(01:35):
a government proposal to defund expert teachers in literacy and MALDI.
Education Minister Erica Stanfords launched a consultation document asking all
schools whether the resource teachers should be defunded in favor
of spending elsewhere. Secret leaders say the proposal makes no sense.
Mardi Principles Chief executive Bruce Jebson says it's dismissed the

(01:56):
problems schools are experiencing eis a lack of loving support
funding in this country as it seems, so asking you
a question how you might want to repurpose funding flaud.
A government focus on general practice is being welcomed by
the sector. The Health ministers announced a program to train
up to one hundred overseas doctors as GPS and a

(02:18):
plan to set up twenty four to seven. Digital health
care providers including GPS, can get incentives for supporting graduate nurses,
while Health New Zealand will also offer GPS an extra
two hundred and eighty five million in incentive based funding.
General Practice ENZ chair Brian Betty says while the devil
will be in the detail, putting resources into this area

(02:38):
is a good thing. The number of assisted deaths is
continuing to rise. Health New Zealands revealed its service received
one thousand and forty four formal applications for assisted dying
last year. Over the year, six hundred and seventy six
candidates were confirmed as eligible and four hundred and fifty
three assisted deaths occurred. This compared to three hundred and

(03:00):
thirty six assisted deaths in twenty twenty three and three
hundred and one and twenty twenty two. In sport, former
World Football boss Sent Blatter has arrived at a Swiss
court for his fresh trial on fraud, forgery and misappropriation charges,
one week shy of his eighty ninth birthday. India cricket
captain Rahit Chalma has dismissed suggestions they have had an

(03:22):
unfair advantage by playing all the champions trophy matches in Dubai.
They refuse to tour Pakistan for the tournament because of
strained political relations. The AFL still plans to open the
season in Brisbane while keeping an eye on Cyclone. Alfred
I'm never Retty. Manu. That the latest news fix and
we'll be back with the next update of midday from
the newstalk ZB newsroom.
