Good afternoon, I'm Malcolm Jordan and missus short midday news
fix for Thursday, the first of May. Emergency Management Minister
Mark Mitchell is heading to flooded Canterbury. Selwyn District is
under a state of emergency and Orange rain warnings apply
to much of Canterbury and Kaikoda. Selwyn Hut's residents are
being asked to self evacuate. Sinkholes have emerged on State

Highway IE near Ashburton, and flooding is blocking parts of
State Highway seventy five on Banks Peninsula. Herald photographer George
Hurd is in Doyleston, southwest of christ Church, where everyone's
out sandbagging.

The main street is that like a river flying through
the whole town, and the whole community's out here with
tractors and to the trucks, trying to do everything they
can do to help.

Local John Recky says he's doing all he can to
prepare for the worst.

In Wellington, a rare red wind warning has been issued.
Met Service says the alert level indicates possible threat to

is in the capitol, where flights and cookstraight ferry sailings
are canceled.

Wellingtonians are experiencing the strongest southerly gales in more than
a decade. Waves nearly eight meters high have been recorded
on the city's south coast. There are reports of surface flooding,
slips and down power lines. Wellington Airport's also warning of
continued disruption, with most flights canceled this morning.

Orange wind warnings also applied to Marlborough and whited Upper
senior doctors have walked off the job and on to
picket lines. The thousands of doctors are seeking a one
point five percent pay rise and a number of nurses
and homes support workers are also striking when nurses ruts.

Doctor Sylvia Boys from Auckland's Middlemoor Hospital Emergency Department as
told News Talk said be the health system is at
breaking points.
