Good morning. I'm never ready, Manu, and this is your
morning newsweeks for Tuesday, sixth of May, and this update
concern over the major impact US tariffs could have on
the New Zealand film industry. US President Donald Trump has
most recently written he had like one hundred percent tariffs
on all movies produced outside the US. Tataki Auckland Unlimited

Chief executive Nick Hill says this screen industry is a
vital contributor to Auckland's regional economy, generating one point seven
billion dollars and employing eighty four hundred people. He says
the industry also fosters international partnerships, including US studios, distributors
and creatives. Exports are hoping for big results from negotiations

on a free trade agreement with India. New Zealand's chief
trade negotiator and his team are in India this week
for the first round of talks. India's GDP is expected
to grow to five five point two trillion UBIS dollars
by twenty thirty, making it one of the world's fastest
growing economies. Export NZ executive director Josh ten says it's
exciting to see talks underway.

Livestock numbers continued to decline, with latest stats in Zeed
figures showing a twenty one percent drop in sheep numbers
over the past ten years. There were twenty three point
six million sheep in New Zealand and twenty twenty four
down six point two million from twenty fourteen. Dairy cattle
numbers also declined thirteen percent in the same period. Federated

Bridge the reason for the decline is land use change,
with less grassland for the animals.

Concerns really lie around the reduction of sheep numbers being
driven not so much because forest is a better land
use in some cases, but as the carbon market is
really driving that forward.

Questions around whether the Corrections ministers call for longer sentences
would actually reduce reoffending. Mark Mitchell has asked Corrections to
look into potentially scrapping short prison sentences and replacing them
with longer ones. Labour leader Chris Hipkins would like to
see the data first, as evidence usually suggests a longer
prison sentence carries a higher chance of reoffending. Some families

are unable to go back after heavy rainfall opened up
a crack on Banks Peninsula. Four households remain evacuated and
the area is still in a state of emergency following
last week's wild weather. There's still particular concern about a
one hundred meter long crack that appeared on Arcador's Lighthouse Road.
A major fundraiser for homelessness is returning to Auckland as

the city faces a spike in the number of rough sleepers.
The LifeWise Big Sleepout is being held in Auckland on
July tenth, after being on hiatus since it was last
run in twenty nineteen. In sport, netball, New Zealand of
