Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good afternoon. I'm Malcolm Jordan and this is your midday
news fix for Wednesday, the first of October. More government
cash for the three Crown controlled gent tailors. That's the
biggest change in this morning's energy announcement. Alongside plans for
a new LNG import facility. Energy Minister Simon Watt says
a report concluded sector players weren't confident they could ask

(00:27):
the government for money to fund new generation projects. He
says increasing capital and creating an LNG backstop for dry
years will help the market.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Some of the changes that we are announcing here will
have an immediate effect. What I can guarantee is that
the result of the actions that we're implementing will have
downward pressure in the context of that price point for
New Zealand consumers.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
And what says big power companies have already been banned
from giving themselves supplied discounts not offered to others. He
says unbundling the sector wouldn't solve anything.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
The splitting of the Gen Taylors is good politics, but
it's not good policy. The major issue we're dealing with
here is that investment in energy sources has not been
happening Kiwii.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
Clinical psychologist, media celebrity and author Nigel Latter has died
a year after being diagnosed with stomach cancer. His families
shared the news this morning, saying the fifty eight year
old fought with enormous bravery. Latter posted a video on
social media last September revealing he had an inoperable tumor.
Now that it was not a great moment, right because

(01:33):
these things happen to other people's how he.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
Was going to think.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Latter was best known for his psychology based TV shows
like the politically incorrect Parenting Show. The Firefighters' Union has
agreed to strike this month over staffing pay in the
state of aging fire trucks. It's notified Fire and Emergency
of its intention to take action on October seventeen, from

(01:56):
noon to one pm. The notice follows an being rejected
by ninety nine percent of union members. The US President
has threatened mass firings of federal workers if a government
shutdown goes ahead. Democrats and Republicans are locked in a
stalemate over whether to extend the Affordable Care Act. Federal

(02:17):
funding expires at five pm unless Congress agrees on a deal.
Donald Trump's last term saw the longest federal shutdown in
US history. He's threatened Democrats with major cuts if things
shut down, accusing them of taking a huge risk.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
We can do things during the shutdown that are irreversible,
that are bad for them and irreversible by them, like
cutting vast numbers of people out, cutting things that they like,
cutting programs.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
That they like.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
An explanation on a positive government update on mental health
and addiction support targets. Data shows eighty four percent of
people are accessing primary care within a week, surpassing the target.
More than eighty percent are accessing specialist support within three weeks.
Clinical psychologist at doctor Dougal Sutherland says having goals may

(03:05):
have helped earmark need.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
They're still not training the promised five hundred more per
year that was one of the targets, so I'm not
sure if it's more people, but perhaps more efficiency. I
would imagine that they'll be targeting of funding towards those areas.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
To sport, two football defeats in the space of four
days for Liverpool. They have been beaten one mill away
by Turkish club Agalatasarai in the Champions League. Following their
loss to Crystal Palace in the Premier League. The New
Zealand Under twenty men's team have beaten Egypt two to
one in their second match at the Age Group World

(03:37):
Cup in Chile, and World men's tennis number one Carlos
Alcarez has won the Japan Open, his eighth title of
the year. I'm Malcolm Jordan. That's your latest news fix.
We'll be back with the next update at five pm

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
