From the News Talk's Eddy Newsroom. This is NEWSFECS. In
this update, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says
a consular partner has met the New Zealanders detained in Israel.
Three New Zealanders were on board a global flotilla nearing
Gaza and had are believe to be detained by Israel.
Two of the New Zealanders are now on a hunger strike.
M FAT says all three had been provided with some

consular support. Given there's no embassy in Israel. It's expecting
to continue support in the coming days while engaging with
the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Health Minister is
confident changes to Bowel cancer screening will benefit everyone. The
screening age lowers to fifty eight tomorrow for Northland, Auckland
and the South Island. The rest of the North Island

(00:47):
follows next year. The move also removes Mari and Pacifica
access to screening at the age of fifty, but the
government says they will eventually lower the screening age to
forty five for everyone. Simeon Brown says the change does
not negatively impact a specific demographic. The evidence I've seen
is that ultimately the page incidence is the same across

all populations. Nearly five hundred people have been arrested in
London while protesting in support of Palestine Action. The group
was prescribed by the government, making it illegal to show
support or affiliation to them. The BBC reports the rally
went ahead despite pleas from authorities to postpone it, citing
the recent attack on a synagogue which left two people dead.

(01:30):
Thousands of teenagers could have their job seeker benefit cut
next year as the government restricts payments. Eighteen and nineteen
year olds without children must pass a parental assistance test
to qualify from November twenty twenty six. The threshold will
be set at just over sixty five thousand dollars. Social
Development Minister Louise Upston says it's the same as the

Supported living payment and similar to the student allowance tests and.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
We felt that those on very low incomes below and
would struggle to support eighteen and nineteen year olds.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
That's news in sport, a return more than a decade
in the making for Broncos coach Michael McGuire and tonight's
NRL Grand Final. The last decided the former kiwi's mentor
was involved in was when he led the Rabbitos to
the title in twenty fourteen. McGuire says the eleven years
it's taken him to get back to the big stage
makes it extra special.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Discus to show how they are to come by and
I've learned that over the last eleven years now, but
to be with a very special group of men that
probably weren't quite sure what they were going to have
when they first arrive in November, but to see what
they've committed to and how they've gone about things, I'm
just so proud of them.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
The Stealers are into the playoffs of Rugby's NPC. They've
beaten Tasman forty nine forty one. Players Association head Steph
Bond insists they don't have a preferred outcome in the
Netball New Zealand versus Dame Noline Totua Saga. That's sport.
I'm Joe Gilfillan. For more news, listen to News Talk

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
