City, where nothing is off limits. Grab a drink, let's go backstage.
The dryes are in the house.Y'all. Welcome to the Backstage with
Brook podcast. Thank you for havingus, Thank you. Okay, so
(00:23):
we have to tell the backstory. We met at a boot Barn event,
what like a couple months ago now, when it was like it was nine
thousand degrees you remember that day?So hot? It was literally so hot,
but it was also that day,it really was, and what Daniel
Bradbury performed at that event, itwas it was fun, but man was
(00:45):
it hot that day? Yeah,so hot. Like my hair was so
frizzy. It's fine. I literallywas just gonna say. I feel like
I remember going home that night andbeing like why did I even try to
do my hair? Yesday. Okay, so let's let's catch up on with
you guys. How's life. What'sgoing on right now with you guys?
So? Yeah, ups and downs, not in a negative positive way,
(01:06):
but like just busyness. Oh yeah. Yeah. We kind of took this
weekend off and we're like coming inand super refreshed and like, yeah,
I mean the year has been honestlyone of the busiest years we've ever had.
Yea very unexpected I think, youknow, being on The Voice last
year and then not knowing what thisyear held for us. It kind of
just like happened, like we dida show at the Basement East in February
(01:30):
and the next day we got acall from Jody Messina asking us to go
on tour and it then we likesigned a booking the next month, and
it's just been a journey. Ifeel like it's crazy. You saying it
out loud makes me feel even morecrazy that you guys were on The Voice
just last year. It feels likeit was so long ago because of all
the seasons I know, but I'mlike, it literally was just like I'm
(01:53):
like, right, last year.Yeah, I mean it's and that was
such a fun journey for us andhas opened so many doors. So yeah,
thankful we did it. Well, let's take a stop right there and
we'll pick back up on Jody Masinabecause I just I have questions. But
back when you guys decided to auditionfor the for The Voice, what was
kind of like your season of life? Were you guys just like well,
let's try this music thing, likewhere you like, what was the what
(02:16):
was the like the consensus when youguys decided to make that decision. Yeah,
I mean, well, honestly,we've we've lived here since twenty fourteen,
and we've been doing music together probablysince two thousand and eight is it
eight? We've been together that longway. We're old Mary Coat a hot
old okay, but we didn't releasemusic until twenty eighteen. And even with
(02:39):
that, it's been like such agift to like become a part of the
Nashville community songwriting wise, and growthat muscle and find out that I can
produce our stuff, you know, kind of out of necessity and one bedroom
apartment, but like you find thesegifts that grow and all that. So
we're just in that in that momentwhere you preface that question, like we
(02:59):
were just I think just sitting onthe couch probably and just just talking about
what's next, and like, youknow, the beauty of being a like
a independent artist is that you canstrategize pretty which all this on the spot.
That's kind of the curse sometimes, especially with your significant other trying to
netflix and chill. But from whatI remember that that night, I was
(03:22):
trying to Netflix and chill and shewas like, hey, I got this
idea. Well you got an email, right, Yeah. So we had
been asked to do it two timesprior and both times they have you know,
scouts that kind of reach out,and we both were like, no,
we just didn't feel like it wasright. We always followed peace with
what any decision we have, Wealways we were told that by one of
(03:43):
our good friends, like always followedpiece and we didn't feel peace about it
the first two times. But thatnight, like we had were sitting on
the couch like chilling, and Iwas like, I wonder what it had
been like if we would have donethe voice. And then literally like the
next week, we get an emailfrom a scout being like, hey,
we're just going to circle back.Would y all want to do a private
audition let us know? And Iwas like that is so weird, Like
(04:03):
hey, god, okay, yeahyeah. I was like just talking about
this, and I told Derek thatday I was like, whenever they you
know, we decided to do it, I was like, I have a
feeling like we're going to do wellin this, and I just I was
like I think it's part of whatwe're supposed to do, so yeah,
why not? Yeah Trio, theyjust wanted the year before, so it's
no kidding. Well, I hadWanna Scott. I don't know if you
(04:24):
remember her from the Voice, butI had her on recently kind of talking
about it and funny enough, bothon Team Blake, like you know,
having a good time. But whenyou're on a show like that, and
it's like, I mean there's literallyeverybody in America who's watching this show,
there's all these eyes on you.Did you guys ever have those moments of
doubt or like this is too hard, or like what were your emotions when
(04:44):
you guys are actually going through withthe process. I think for me,
I don't. I hope this isto sound like, oh I'm super enlightened
or whatever, but I think becausewe were so confident in who we are,
I guess because we you know,we have some years together as a
cup and music. So I feltlike I felt like we were like seniors
at the prom, and we werelike welcoming, and I felt like we
(05:06):
were like literally a lot of theother contestants like and they would tell you
they called us mom and dad becauselike we were just like, I don't
know, it was like weird. We had a crazy piece about it the
whole time, and of course therewere days where we would get like super
nervous. Like I remember getting readyto walk out for the blind audition.
I was like, this is sosurreal because like you've seen it on TV
and we're like right here and they'reout there, and it was it was
(05:28):
cool. So I mean there wasdefinitely moments we were like this is crazy,
and I'm like when we would air, yeah, like we had never
seen the episodes, we were like, oh my gosh, like this we
were watching it for the first timewith like millions of people, So it
was I think was more nerve wrecking. Yeah, but I mean we honestly
through the whole process we just hadthis like crazy piece and we were like
(05:48):
this is who we are. Eitherlike us or you don't. We'll make
it as far as we're supposed to. I guess. Yeah. I mean
even when we got eliminated, Ifeel like we both were just like supposed
to happen that way and peace withthat, and we were just like,
yeah, we got so much TVtime. I felt like Yeah, I
mean I felt blessed with the timewe were on it totally, you know,
timing everything, and I mean fastforward to now. It's just like
(06:11):
you said something specific that I wantto talk to you about, Caitlin,
because you say, you know,we're confident in who we are, and
that's you know, you have peaceabout it, right. And I saw
you post this song on your Instagram, your guys' instagram, about mean hateful
comments. Oh yeah, and ifyou're like me, I'm like ready to
pop off, like talk to somebody, and You're like, I'm gonna be
(06:31):
very nice and I'm gonna just singyou guys' song about you know, just
being nice. So Derek, you, as a husband seeing people be mean
to your wife online, are youlike, bruh for sure. I mean
it's a it's a circular conversation.So yeah, I do my best to
just provide space for her. Andyou know, it's it's one of those
(06:55):
things where you as a couple youlearn not to like shove something down and
minimize it. You have to likelearn how to sit in the dark with
each other. We just flipping thelight back on or whatever. So,
whether it's that or something more likedeeper rooted or whatever. I feel like
we at least communicate well on thatstuff and we've got a great therap.
This's he's amazing with them. Actually, well, I was going to say,
(07:19):
like to that, the reason timingis everything is because you know,
I think you follow piece and thingsbecause of things like like when stuff comes
up like this, we are secureand who we are. So of course
it hurts, like it stings forsure, Like I don't like being told
that I am well fed. Youknow, I hate that girl. You're
beautiful first and forem, yeah you'rehot, thank you. That means a
(07:43):
lot. But you know, youyou go through life and you wonder why
things happen when they do. AndI think that when you're on national television,
you have to be secure and whoyou are because that opens the door
to everyone in their mom's opinion aboutyou and what they think and they don't
even know us. And so itstarted on the show, and I mean
I just had to He was like, babe, you gotta stop reading comments
(08:05):
because I would just be like scrollingand be like I can't believe they said
that. And it was just likeworking me out and and you know,
I just got to a place whereI was like, you know what,
like I am who I am,and I might not be one hundred and
twenty five pounds, you know, the way I was most of my life.
And but that's okay. Like I'mI'm happy. Beauty is not looks,
beauty is not of course, thoseare things that you know. I
(08:30):
love makeup, I love dressing upand being girly, but that doesn't that
doesn't say beauty, like baby isyour heart, your character, like how
you treat others, like what youcarry when you walk in a room.
And I'm just I'm like, youknow what, like people can say what
they want, that's how we areand whatever. And I think that like
what we had gone through in lifeat that time leading up to that,
(08:54):
like was perfect because I knew whoI was going in and so anything negative,
of course it stings. I'm goingto be like I can shrug it
off much easier than likely two yearsago. Yeah, not to get in
the weeds, but like, Ireally feel like it's rooted in control.
Whether you're the person yeah behind thekeyboard or you're the one that has the
sensecurity, you just have to givespace for it and not trying to control
(09:15):
every aspect of it, and yeah, it's long because listen, Greg's probably
sitting behind the keyboard eating some chips, you know what I mean. And
I'm like at this point, I'mlike, you know what, whatever,
who knows what he's going through. There are i mean, in this world
of social media and just you know, first of all, you're in front
of everybody already, but then socialmedia gives people access to you, and
(09:37):
there's just always going to be thosemean people. And I think where I
mean, I know your guys' beliefs, but it's just like when the spirit
of the Lord is in your life, it's like that grace and that kind
of just response instead of a reactionis really where like people just differentiate because
you know, there are other peoplein the world that are just going to
pop right back and say like oh, but like you said, a response
instead of a reaction is so important. And I just love the way that
(10:00):
you responded to that because there areso many other people in the world that
are getting those you know, whetherthey're an artist or just somebody in the
workplace. There's some somebody just youknow, posting something because they feel like
it. There's people everywhere, andyou just gotta let it kind of roll
off your chin. Yeah, Imean, and it's kind of weird because
I usually don't respond like that,Like I don't ever do like a post
back to somebody or like screenshot withsomeone said, but something in me was
(10:24):
like do it and like sing youa little bit of the song that we
wrote called Beauty Queen and literally justlike encourage women wherever they are that read
this, that like these words don'tmatter, don't want words like stick to
you, that don't carry anyway, you know, or any anyway. That
was a moment and I'm honestly gladthat you made it into a very positive
(10:46):
thing. You really did. Andthere's so many things and not to get
like kind of like on a tangentand we were talking about body in the
world. I mean, it's justlike like you said, beauty is not
a size. It is not whatyou look like. And it's specifically like
I put on a size you know, pair of sixteen pants that fit amazing,
and then there's another size fourteen thatfits, and it's just like size
(11:07):
is one, don't make sense inanything, and then two it's like everybody's
different for a reason. We alldon't have to look the same. Yeah,
And I just love that you respondedthat way because it is a really
big positive reminder to women even men, that like, yeah, we all
look different and that's okay, andwe're all pretty okay. Yeah, maybe
(11:28):
talking about streaming numbers right now, whatever the number is that you put your
own value in, yes, yeah, okay, bigger than that. Well,
I kind of touched on our likeour faith and things like that.
So I want to play this littleclip for everybody really quick. Walking Cocity
(11:56):
put out a whole album of hymnsand I'm there, queen. You guys
crushed that together, and you knowwhat we that is. We're just talking
about that yesterday warming that has beenon my heart. I mean, I
have led worship a lot in mylife, and you know, I'm not
leading worship currently right now, andI you know, I know that we're
meant to be in the bars, like that's where we're meant to be,
Yeah, in country music. Ilove that you can talk about Jesus,
(12:18):
but it is on my heart. And it's funny that you say that because
just yesterday, I like just postedthis little thing on Facebook of like,
what would y'all think if we dida him EP or album like Caitlyn's and
the response has been like nuts,And so it has been in my heart
like pretty heavy recently, and uh, I think it may be in the
works maybe for next year. Sowe're trying to like, you know,
(12:41):
we always talk about God in ourmusic. I like it. It's our
EP being called Raisin Beers and Hallelujahs. But uh, you know, we're
not ashamed of like what we believe, and we're not ashamed to sing about
Jesus and we don't want to shoveit down people's throat either. And it's
just like you can be unapologetic butnot so ash about it. Like there's
(13:01):
so much like division in this world. It's just like just be you are,
let me you I am, andlike we can all sit by the
fire and yeah, talk about whatwe're going through, you know, without
having an exact language over y.That's that's all I want to say about
it. Well, And there's there'sa like a sentence that I always say
to people who are scared about religionor you know, you're allowed to be
(13:22):
friends with people who are Christians andyou're not a Christian, you know,
and vice versa, and I feellike that there's such a big divisiveness with
that where you feel like, oh, well, she believes this, I
can't believe that. Or she's aDemocrat and I'm a Republican like that kind
of stuff. But it's like, right, it's you can belong before you
believe, That's what I say.And I'm like, you're allowed to lean
in a little bit if you likethe way a song sounds. Just because
(13:45):
it's about Jesus doesn't mean you can'tlike it if you don't believe that way.
And I just I think music issuch a cool way for people to
you know, whether you're singing aboutit in a song, whether you're in
church singing about it. You know, it's just like music is such a
cool way because when people hear it, I mean, you hear that clip
that I just played, and Imean you full chill bumps the first time
I heard in, and it's likeevery single time. And it's just like
(14:07):
if something moves you, like, listen, lean in, you know.
And I just I love that y'allare unapologetic about your faith and you're not
afraid to have a little bit offun and talk about Jesus. Well,
I mean, we have a songraising beers and hollidends. We've been doing
it on the road all year, and no matter where we play, we
have this part in the song wherewe just like break it down and we
go God is good all the time, all the time, God is good.
(14:28):
You got a reason to be thankfuland say thank you like we would.
And no matter where we do it, I mean, we'll be in
Nebraska, we've been in Texas,We've been in North Carolina. Everybody does
that, and I'm sure most ofthose people and they're not everybody like even
believes, yeah, but they joinin with us, and I'm like,
come on, let's just like beroudy about Jesus. Like and it's just
a fun moment. And like Ithink it's just like proven to me and
(14:50):
Derek that like we can be ourfull self and it's accepted because we're being
authentic and who we are. Sowhether someone agrees or believes or whatever her,
they're gonna they're gonna have fun inthat moment because we're just doing our
thing right and we're being natural aboutit, you know what I mean.
So I don't know, I definitelyfeel like we are more ourselves than we
(15:11):
ever have been. And you know, we're creating and releasing the music that's
always been in our hearts, andsome hymns might be in the lune.
I'll be the first in line towhatever I need to do. I'm ready
for it. Yeah, thank you. That means a lot, of course.
Okay, So we're gonna We're gonnacompletely pivot. We're gonna completely change
the conversation. I want to knowhow you guys met. Tell me,
(15:35):
tell me a love story. Twosides kidding, there's always sides. We're
pretty much from the same area inNorth Carolina. I'm from a little town
called Thomasville. I heard Thomasville Furniture. Yes, but you always say that
it's so funny. What's the onlything there now for other than like the
little in the wall burger spots?I like, you know. And then
(15:56):
I'm from Yes, I'm from alittle area called well, it's like Winston
Salem but like Sington, North Carolina. And it's a big barbecue, you
know. So we grew up liketwenty minutes apart, but didn't meet until
both of us were out of highschool. Yea, my best friend was
dating his best friend. They hadtold me about Derek for a couple of
years, but he was dating somebodyand it was just and I was always
(16:18):
the girl who was like, Idon't want to get married, I want
to do music. No one's gonnaget in the way. And literally,
I just then I met Derek. But no, I mean she literally would
say like, no, you justgot to meet Derek, like I could
really see y'all. I always tellher, I'm like, you're a prophetic
in that moment, because she wouldbe like, y'all are gonna get married.
(16:41):
I can just see it, likeyou're gonna be doing music together,
Like I can feel that, andI'm like, I thought she was like
out of her mind. I waslike, I don't know what you're talking
about. I don't do blind dates, Like this is weird. But we
ended up meeting each other and weall went for Mexican food one night,
which is our favorite, and weended up sitting in the parking lot that
night talking for like hours in thecar about everything, and when we both
(17:02):
left, he sent his buddy Taylora text, and I sent my friend
Joey a text, and I waslike, I don't know how in the
world you knew, but I'm gonnamarry him. I mean I knew,
and it was kind of wild becauseyeah, we both kind of the same
text. Yeah, it was wild. And so now we've been together fifteen
years and married twelve in November, amazing, which is just so crazy awesome,
(17:26):
such different people, but like Iknow, it's just great to grow
with somebody in that way. Andyeah, yeah we've been definitely Gosh,
you've been through all the things together. So do you feel like you guys
are like opposite personalities? Do youfeel like, yeah, like we still
are and we were very much wereso back then. Oh yeah, it's
just weird how you become you know, kind of more more even even kill
(17:48):
or maybe I'm like up a littlemore than I was. You know,
like I've always liked being in thebackground, and you know, whether it's
audio engineering or whatever like that orthat's why I produce our music. But
at the same time time, likeit's been really great for me to put
down the guitar and just melt somefaces with the microphone. That's right.
Yeah, It's it's funny because likeI was just laughing because I was thinking
(18:11):
I just had a vision of likeone of our first rehearsals when we were
dating, because we started doing musictogether pretty much like about a couple of
months after we started dating, andI remember leaving rehearsal one night because I
got mad, I got offended bylike something he didn't like in a song
choice, and I was like,it's just funny how we've grown because like
back then, we used to takeeverything so personal, and then now it's
(18:32):
honesty on the front end, soit like doesn't fester, and we literally
tell each other exactly how we feel. And I think that's why we can
work together, because like I'll literallybe like I don't like that idea,
and He'll just be like, well, that idea sucks, and I'm like,
you're right, Yeah, you're right, and so it's like we feedback
the time. But we learned tojust like be honest with each other so
that we're not holding anything so thatwe can like perform together and be you
(18:57):
know, in front of people andbe ourselves. So it's like it's been
a journey. But yeah, weare very different. I mean, he
keeps me sane, is what Itell people, because I'm so like I
just I'm a hot mess. Ialways tell people. I'm a girl.
Yeah, I mean literally, I'mone of the most passionate like souls.
(19:18):
I feel everything so deeply and hedoes too, but he's able to really
really you're passionate because you have theflag and you're running somewhere, and I
just gotta I'm the rudder ship.Yes literally, I'm like we always say
we have friends that left us becauseI'm like, there's like she's got the
flag and she's running. Because I'malways I'll get an idea and I'm like
(19:41):
I'm doing it and I and Idon't even think about it. I'm just
like, yeah, this is happening. And he's like, calm down,
like why do you want to dothis? And I'm like, Okay,
maybe I should think about this.So that's so funny because my husband Andrew
and I were just talking about this. We got married in twenty twenty,
so we were just married three yearsthis year and we were talking about we
did a little personality test and he'slike, you're the biggest deal I've ever
met. And I was like,I have no idea what that means.
And then I took the personality testand it's like dominant and influence and I'm
(20:04):
like, yeah, okay, that'sme for sure. And he's very passive,
very just kind of like cool withlike you said, just kind of
like being in the background, butlike I'll drag him out the stuff and
like he'll have fun. But it'sfunny how like that old saying of like
opposites attract and like how much youreally do balance each other out? Because
I could not imagine being with somebodywith like my personality. I'm just like
(20:26):
ready to roll all the time.Literally, it would never work if I
was with someone that was had apersonality like me, like it would be
just like wow. But I'm thankful. I mean honestly, I feel like
we get asked. That's like thenumber one question is like what's it like
working together? And why do y'alldo the duo thing? Why why don't
you be separate artists? And it'slike, honestly, there's so many amazing
(20:48):
like women and men doing their thing. Like what we have is special and
I feel like God puts together todo so it's like our personalities. You
know, we said yes a longtime ago, and that's been through like
all the good, the bad,the hard days, like all of it
and that's you know, it's partof who we are. So I love
(21:08):
that y'all can balance each other out. I think the one thing that you
said that just really stuck out tome. It's like you tell each other
everything, you communicate, and thatis the one thing that I feel like
so many relationships get it wrong,Like you really do have to communicate and
listen, I'm not perfect with ityet. Okay, I'm still working on
it. We're still working on me. Yeah, absolutely, but communication in
a relationship is so key because Idon't know if you're like me, but
(21:32):
I'm like thinking something and then hedoesn't do it, and I'm like,
whata aren't you do it? Yeah, it's just kind of telling me,
dude, like, Okay, you'reright, it's my fault. I mean
we all have our scenarios where wefeel like we're in lack in this way
or whatever. But I mean ifwe have that individual like I'm going to
take care of myself just a littlebit, you know, that that sense
of lack goes down and we're likewe don't have as much offense and it's
(21:53):
not as as circular as it usedto be. So totally, I just
thankful for that. Oh you guysare so key. I love you guys,
seriously, I'm like, I loveyou. You're awesome to talk to.
We're all family right now. We'rein our family. Yes, Okay,
we got to turn back around. We got to talk about going on
to missing because getting that phone callhas got to be one of the coolest
(22:14):
like I mean, so far inyour career, you know, yeah moments.
Tell me all about how that thatwent down. Yeah, Well,
we had just played, like shesaid earlier, are showcase here in Nashville,
which is essentially a public show, and we invite some industry folks that
we want to work with or likeyou know, friends of friends, whatever,
all that stuff, and it's abig show for us, Like it
really was. All the production likeit was a big deals Tuesday night.
(22:36):
We were like, how are wegoing to fill this up on a Tuesday
night in Nashville? And I wasbasically having like panic attacks for the show,
like I hope that people come,Like what if this is a big
failure? Like what if no onecomes? What if we only sell?
Like the enemy is such a jerk. It's like creep feared, doubt all
just creeping in and you're gender andstop saying like and I mean, what's
(22:56):
so crazy is it? Actually thevery next day when Jody reached out and
I was like, I remember whenwe got the text, Like it was
like seven am. I was like, so early, and I just got
a text that said, Hey,Derek, this is Joe to Messina.
Wanted to talk to you all aboutpossibly coming out on some tour dates.
I know it's early, just Imean it was like seven thirty in the
(23:18):
morning. And immediately I thought tomyself, which all that at that time,
we just don't I know, well, I had not slept the whole
night because our show was so electricand fun and like it just felt like
a win, and so I waskind of just like already awake. But
when we got that text, Iimmediately was just like all that worry and
near and stress. And literally thevery next morning, like not even twenty
(23:41):
four hours later, we get atext and so we called her that morning,
and you know, she was justtalking about how she's never really invited
an opener for any of her showsor tours. They usually have like you
know, local people or whatever,Yeah, whatever the area is, they
have someone lined up. But shewas and I want to invite someone that
(24:02):
I believe in and I want tohave, like I would love for y'all
to come. And it was sosweet, you know. She was like
I know that she had come toone of our shows back in twenty it
was twenty twenty. We did somelive stream stuff or just like a show
at a buddy's barn. Oh yeah, yeah, he has this barn that
he would do Wednesday night therapy andso he had a show there and our
(24:23):
friend Angelo sings background vocals for Jodie, and so she invited Jody out because
they had bus call and she waslike, you should come here the tries.
Yeah, and she came out thatnight, and I guess she had
had her eye on us for alittle bit that show, and then so
she called us and she was like, I want to get you on shows
like as soon as we can.And so I mean that was yeah,
fast forward what three years later.I guess, well, well, what
(24:45):
do you mean twenty oh yea yeahyeah yeah. But like for our like
with the shows with her, Imean we started in April and our show
at the Basement East was February.Yeah, so it's like it was just
like quit and we've been on therow with her in our last show is
this week with her for the year, and we're kind of sad, but
it's gonna be a celebration and we'rejust thankful. You know, we grew
(25:08):
up listening to her. I usedto watch her on CMT and I sang
her songs yeah in bars and weboth did, and I mean, Bye
Bye was like one that we alwaysdid together. And yep, gosh,
man, she's got hits and sheher voice is I have honestly never seen
anything like it. I mean,at her shows, packed rooms, everybody
(25:30):
sings every single word to every singlesong, even the like cuts that weren't
like you know, on the radio, a ton like you know, everywhere,
like young kids and her fans areof all ages, and it's just
been such a win for us.And you know, it's been our first
big tour. We've never been anopener for an artist, and you know,
(25:51):
like for a consistent amount of time, and so yeah, it's been
like a honestly a dream year. We've played so many shows this year that
bigger crowds we've ever played. It'sjust like we're just trying to soak it
all in and be present in allthat, but also like hope that we
get some other tours next year.Oh, you're gonna claiming it right now
for you. There are definitely alot of that I receive it. So
(26:12):
I want to kind of take Ilove asking this to people who come on
the podcast because I feel like ifyou could rewind back to the moment,
say when you guys first started makingmusic together, and the just like age
you were then and like the wisdomof course that you've received since, but
saying like, hey, guys, guess what one day you're going to open
up for Jody Messina, so getready to roll? Yeah, what would
(26:33):
you say to yourself? Oh?Man? That would have you answer?
And then I'll answer. It's hardto answer because I feel like that would
have changed a lot as far asthe perceived slow pace. You know,
like anything, you find her rhythm, you find her flow and get over
the other humps that like, youknow, I've never done this before.
I got to figure out this andput all the hours into that and all
that. So it's it's hard tospeak into that, but I know that
(26:55):
that would have been super encouraging tohear. Yeah, like would have like
that, Yeah, the Valley's comingto an end. Guy, It's just
that has been like the like thephrase that I think if I could,
like say for me and Derek forour journey of music is never give up.
Like even the days that feel likenothing is going good, it's like
(27:18):
we don't have to strive as much. Right, Really, all it is
is like being yourself, creating whatyou know is to be true and releasing
that into the world or to yourfriends or whatever, and like letting the
rest just do its thing, likeit's all going to be okay, It's
all going to work out. Yeget your reps in, is what I've
(27:38):
Yeah, that's so true. Justdo your thing. You know, where
do I want to go with this? Like vocally, I've I've always like
if I think of a melody, sometimes it comes out of on the guitar
first or whatever. And since youknow, owning a studio and building a
place at home, like I've spentso many hours on the mic, and
I'm like, I did not knowI could do this, do this.
(28:02):
I didn't know I could do thiswith my voice or do that. And
it's just a sense of discovery thatI never want to, you know,
lose and that's that's the cool thingabout music. It's very generative. The
more you do, the more youkind of can do in a sense.
Yeah, I mean, listen,it's so true that where you're like kind
of like do the reps because likein the gym, like you gotta do
the reps to build a muscle. And it's just like that muscle is gonna
(28:23):
keep getting stronger. And I lovethat you kind of shared that where you're
like the growth slowly, but surelyhere it comes and these are just recent
realizations, you know. Yeah,it's awesome. It is. It's doing
it more. We were just talkingto a friend last night because she was
like talking about songwriting and she waslike, I just don't I just have
a hard time like gathering my thoughtsfor like lines, and like I don't
(28:45):
know how. And I was like, it's all it is is a muscle,
Like ye, you just just tryit. Just keep just just like
put one foot out even if youdon't finish the song, just like write
four lines or like I'm like, you know, it's it is. It's
a muscle. I love that yousaid something else I can to go about
striving, like stop striving so muchand I feel like there's so many different
ways you can interpret that, whetherit's through your job, whether it's through
(29:07):
a relationship or friendships even or youknow, just life in general. Striving,
I feel like is one of thosethings that we all are in that
point, like at that point onetime in our lives or another. And
it's like the second you stop strivingand you just kind of do everything you
do do you know, do itto your best of your ability, and
then just keep on going and likethose doors are going to open when they're
(29:29):
supposed to. Hopefully you'll walk throughthe right one. But I love that
you said stop striving. That's soimportant have a good analogy for them.
Okay, you know when I firststarted learning guitar, I was like,
the hardest chord is is a barchord like the F chord because it's like
so much tension there. Yeah,so it's like this clenched fist is what
I imagine, And like you youcan't go through life that way, like
(29:52):
it's you have to. Ironically, when you let go a little bit,
you can actually thrett the notes alittle bit better. You can't really explain
it, but like you know,it's easier, said than done. It's
like, oh, it's sure wouldn'tbe nice to let go and do all
this stuff like it's just necessary andand we're just like yes, like yep,
(30:15):
like that nothing's going to go well. But if you just like and
I'm like preaching the choir, Ihave to remind myself of this all the
time because I can get so workedup. D yes, you can,
but I can get so I canget so worked up about what's next and
hoping, and I want to knoweverything this though this, you know,
I want to know what's going tobe happening in the next two months.
(30:37):
And yeah, we don't have tobe like we have to be aware of
our feelings and at least give spacefor him. I mean, it's not
like it's kind of like the checkengine light, like you can't just turn
it off. Obviously, I don'twant my feelings to rule every part of
my life. Yeah, give somespace to it. You know. Well,
it's funny that it's funny that we'retalking about this, because last week
in our Bible study we talked aboutlike the story of Jonah and the Will,
(30:59):
and you think, like, oh, you know, he was this
whale came and swallowed him up,and it's just like, if you like
read the full story, it's likethere was a storm because God told him
to do something and he basically turnedhis back and ran right, and so
this big storm came and then theseguys were like, what am I supposed
to do? He's like, throwme off the ship. I'm the problem.
Get rid of me. Yeah,So he throws them off the ship,
(31:21):
and then God sends this whale tolike swallow him up, to safely
return him to where he's supposed tobe. So it's like a provision,
right, So it's like you thinkthat the whale is like this big issue,
but if you read the full story, you're like, no, that
was God's provision like sending that whalebecause he knew that the storm. If
he didn't send the whale, hewould have drowned and he would have died.
Right. So it's like the maintakeaway was like you don't have to
(31:42):
like know, like you don't haveto know what's happening. You just have
to trust and like having faith trustand faith heavily is like the hardest things
to just do is to just trustthat everything's gonna work out, Like it
really is so hard, especially inthe music industry. Yeah, girl,
And I know that probably every artistcould agree with that. I mean it's
(32:04):
hard, Like, and then youget to one level of success, you
get something you've always wanted, andthen you're like, Okay, what's next.
So then it's like you can't evenlike, we just released an EP
and I'm trying to be just presentin that and like like celebrate that we
did that, Like we haven't releasedan EP in five years, and but
like so much of the way theworld works is all right, let's move
(32:24):
on. What's next, what's thenext big thing? And I'm like,
I don't know, like, andso it's so hard to just trust that
timing is is going to work. But timing is everything. Really, I've
seen that time and time again inour life and this journey. That pressure
is as an artist, as anentrepreneur, whoever's listening to this, Like
it's it's definitely a counterintuitive pressure toyou know, produce this and that.
(32:47):
But I mean again, I'm justso glad we can have each other to
even out and find that rhythm andtotally balance each other. When somebody yeah,
there you go a little nugget ofagain good of truth for you.
All Right, So let's talk aboutRaisin Beers and Hallelujahs, because y'all did
just release this when you're putting thispiece of work together, and I mean,
(33:07):
like you said, it's been fiveyears since you released an EP.
Were you guys nervous at all?I know that you know, there comes
those nerves when you release a pieceof work, But yeah, I think
nervous in like hoping it does welland hoping people receive it well. Yeah,
because I do know that you know, raising Beers and Holly is that's
that saying can also like ruffle feathersfor people. Totally, But I'm okay
(33:28):
with that, Like I'm okay likeruffling feathers and doing things that are like
worth the risk and just being real. So yeah, like definitely nervous that
it. You know, hope,I think anything we release, I'm like,
I want it to go well.Yeah, we've played We've played these
songs for so long on the roadand especially this year we are test market
and really are you know, genuineinteraction with the crowd has been like the
(33:52):
Beers now Lujahs song totally. Yeah. The leading single is actually take Me
Out I was like, oh,you know what I mean, queue that
up for you, Okay. Iwas like I had it ready to go.
Yeah, but yeah, I meanafter all these shows this year,
(34:13):
we were getting dms from people inthe in the crowd being like, where's
the song. I've been searching,I can't find it, and I'm like,
it's not out yet. And sofinally, so like we literally let
the fans pick and like people wantto show and like our socials, like
we would just tease songs and seewhat people thought, and they kind of
picked all of them. So it'ssongs that we had been doing, Like
we wrote Raising Beers and Halllujahs oneyears ago. Yeah, so take Me
(34:37):
Out it was twenty twenty twenty yep, Yeah, something took the world out
that literally we wrote that because wewere just cooped up in like before we
had bought our house. We werein our eight hundred square foot apartment,
and all we were wanting to dois just like go back home and be
a family in North Carolina in theback roads and just like have bonfires with
(35:00):
friends and like that's all we werelike craving it. And so that's why
that song kind of came out becauseit was just what we wanted and what
we were craving in that time.So we just did a music video for
it, and I guess it's Licington, North Carolina. Yeah technically, but
in our hometown. Amazing. Itwas the first music video we got to
do, like with with the hometowncrew and something, and we just like
(35:20):
posted it online on our socials. We were like to like fans, we
were like, come and be inthe video. It's going to be here.
First time we've ever done that, and so we had people come that
have like supported us for years, that's new fans, and like it was,
it's gonna be It's honestly my favoritevideo we've ever done, and it's
coming out in November. See veryexcited about it. I'm just excited for
you guys and your story and everythingthat you guys have you know, gone
(35:44):
through. I mean, the lastjust year has been a complete whirlwind,
from the voice to an EP,to touring with Jody and then Christmas with
the Drises. Yes, yes,I'm so excited because I like have this
weird obsession with Brett Eldridge and hislike Christmas shows that he does, like
it's like the King of Christmas.I feel like, now he's killing it.
(36:05):
And then it's just like there's nobodythat does it as a duo,
right. I love like Dan andShay will sing a song here and there,
but I'm like, give me ashow, okay. And I'm like
the drives came and delivered. SoI'm excited about this. Yeah, we're
excited. We're Our first show isactually here in Franklin, Tennessee at the
Franklin Theater on December second, andwe have two shows that day, four
and aid and we have special guestgirl I'm gonna be there. We're very
(36:30):
for it. I mean a lotof them are friends in town and other
artists, so it's it's gonna besuper fun. And we've done the show
for the last like six or sevenyears in North Carolina. Yeah, and
it is always a sellout. Likelast year we did three, they all
sold out. We have four inour hometown this year, and it's it's
just like homie, like we wantI mean, we love Christmas. So
it's it's always like we include family, Like in North Carolina, we bring
(36:52):
my family up and they sing andit's just like we want it to be
like home. But it's like we'lldo our original music too, Like we'll
do all of our up on theEP and then like some of our original
Christmas music. So we have aChristmas single come in this year, so
excited turned it in today. Yeahit's actually it's it's very a different kind
of song for us. It's it'snot a love song. It's a breakup
(37:13):
song, a Christmas breakup song.Yeah, it's got it's got like this
passive aggressive lyrics about like yellow snowand all that. Yeah, oh my
god, I hope you have aholly jolly, flip the birdie Christmas.
Well, you know, you thinkabout it. Not everybody has the best
memories around Christmas. And there arepeople who literally like not to make it
(37:37):
like sad, but like who havegone through hard things. And we were
like, let's just write a fun, witty song about a breakup and I
know people will relate. I mean, we like send it to a friend
the other day just to like forher to hear the final mix, and
she was like, Derek, whatdid you do? Because the title is
why do You ruin Christmas? Buthonestly, I think it's my favorite vocal
I've ever done on a song.I'm excited, killed it with the production
(38:01):
and it's just it's super fun.So it's like up and it's it's like
Texas Swing, Bonnie Rate slag guitar, I'm here for it, seventies to
be drums. It's so fun.Well, and it's so funny that y'all
are writing this song because I wasliterally talking to one of my friends about
this, about how like you knowthose guys who will break up with you
right before Christmas so they don't havea present. It's just like this is
(38:22):
the entire song, Like that's whatthe song is about. Like we'll send
it to you and I can't waitto hear it. I'm sure it's so
good. All right, Well, wrapping things up, there's a little gumball
machine right next to you, Kaitlin. I heard there. It's like the
little gumball questions. So there's onewaiting for you at the bottom. I
want ahead and pop the top foryou because nobody can ever get it open.
Always so actual person breaking out.I don't get it. Okay,
(38:49):
let's just be honest with each other. My nails are press on right now
because I know they're terrible. Ihate press on nails. These are going
to fly off before the next likehour is over. I have not had
time to get my nails done thelast like four days. I would have
never known they look amazing. Sotrying to get out, I was like,
popular, I've never started a conversationabout nails. Thank you, Thank
(39:13):
you for that nice little segment tryingto make y'all feel how much I hate
press on nails. I love thisquestion. Oh, we love what's the
question? Was this sight? What'syour go to cocktail? Oh? Yeah,
we love cocktails. Yeah, shelikes old fashions. Old fashion is
my number one. I made thisone literally two nights ago, and I
(39:35):
made it for her again last night. He's a bartender to y'all. Oh
really, I don't want to saytwenty twenty hobby, but it was you
know, Oh yeah, we allwent that movie marathon. Even last night.
We started a movie at midnight ManMidnight Taco Bell. We did.
It was one of those nights wejust had, like the best weekend Taco
Bell in a movie. Yeah, funny because you have Taco Bell and you
(39:58):
had this bougie cocktail that I'm aboutto say I can't wait to hear about
it. It's called dry Time spelledt h y emmy. Okay, so
there's time in there. There is, so we got uh that's the garnish.
So we start with muddled raspberries andwe do this ougie chocolate liqueur called
krim toic cacao and dry curosur, which is like a really nice like orange
(40:23):
liquor. And then I think Iput two ounces of Jamaican rum in it.
You can put like kanyak or somethingelse in there, or even bourbon.
Bourbon might be a little heavy, but and then you put some lime
in there, and then you putan egg white in there. What you
do is you shake it. Yeah, you shake it without the ice,
and apparently that like emulsifies the egg. So then when you put in the
(40:46):
weeds. But I'm here for it. It's fun. So you put ice
in it and then you shake it, and then you pour it and it's
like this pink. It looks likepepto bismol, but like not as thick.
So it is like my new favoritedrink. I feel like this needs
to be a signature cocktail at allthe Christmas of the Dry Show. This
sounds very love that. I mean, it is seriously such a good so
(41:08):
like it's always been old fashioned, but now I think this is my new
like fall cocktail fate where you getchocolate raspberry with the time and orange.
It almost tastes like a chocolate coveredraspberry. So what's gonna happen is I'm
gonna have to re listen to thisand I'm gonna have to put the ingredients
of this in the description of thepodcast so people can take us and they
(41:30):
can make this and tag y'all atit, because the Dry Time sounds amazing,
awesome, Okay, perfect, y'allare amazing. I seriously am so
happy that we got to do thissame same where Energy had us. Are
seriously so sweet. I want toreally quick before we end things. We
talked about EP, right, andI know you said don't look ahead to
the other things, but what iscoming from the Dryes. I know we've
(41:51):
got Christmas Time, we got thenew Christmas song EP just came out.
Honestly, we have a ton ofsongs that like, yeah, it's just
hard to like, you view thiswhole mountain of songs that you love and
you just want to put them inthe right spot and all that. But
I mean I think after this firstDP, it's pretty obvious that we need
to do a separate It's it's almostlike another Beers and Hallelujahs. Yeah,
(42:14):
we're probably gonna be like a parttwo. Yeah, yeah, probably.
We're hoping. We don't have anylike concrete dates, but like probably,
I would say we have a nota new sound, but or a departure.
Really, it's just like the nextthe next part of that, and
we have some pretty honest music torelease. Yeah, I'm very excited.
Okay, well, I love y'all. I can't wait to have you guys
(42:35):
back in to talk about the nextproject whenever it comes. But let's go
out with a little take me out, y'all. Give the drives the follow
They are seriously a hoot. Ilove y'all so much. I got you
